Akinwumi Adesina describes Dangote Refinery as a game-changer

Akinwumi Adesina, president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has described the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Plant projects as a “game-changing initiative” that will spur development and deepen regional integration. Adesina said this after touring the $19.5 billion Nigerian greenfields crude oil refinery and petrochemical production plant owned by Dangote Industries Limited on Saturday. In 2014, AfDB’s board had approved a $300 million loan to Dangote Industries Limited to support the construction and operation of the greenfield crude oil refinery and the greenfield fertilizer manufacturing plant. “The Dangote Group is an “Africa growth accelerator… I am completely blown away by the magnitude of what I see here,” a statement from the AfDB Group quoted Adesina as saying. “This is a world-class industrial complex that will make Nigeria and Africa proud. We at the African Development Bank are proud of this project. “Every African country needs to have an Aliko Dangote to help the continent industrialise. “Dangote’s success demonstrates that governments should prioritise industrialisation. We must continue to support the private sector, considering the value they bring.” Adesina further noted that the African private sector was pivotal to the execution of the African Continental Free Trade Area. On his part, Aliko Dangote, group president and chief executive, said the refinery is the world’s largest single-train petroleum refinery, with a capacity to process 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day. “We appreciate the support of the Nigerian government, our lenders, and development finance institutions like the African Development Bank, without whom we would not have come this far. We have enjoyed a good working relationship with the bank, and this visit further encourages us,” Dangote said. Adesina said AfDB would continue to work with the Dangote Group to do more for Africa. He said the bank’s industrialisation strategy included identifying and backing “African regional champions” like the Dangote Group. He added that the African Bank was willing to assist the Dangote Group in such areas as agriculture — including rice and dairy products — as well as cement expansion into other countries. Adesina and Dangote discussed the potential of collaboration between AfDB and Dangote Industries Limited to expand the business to other African countries. Also present at the plant site were Femi Otedola, a Nigerian businessman and philanthropist; Solomon Adegbie-Quaynor, vice-president for the private sector, infrastructure, and industrialisation; Lamin Barrow, the bank’s director-general for its Nigeria country office, and Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, special adviser to the president on industrialisation.

How Ajanma allegedly diverted Ogbogwu fund -Traders’ Forum

The Anambra State Traders’Forum (ATF), has accused the CTC chairman of the Drug Market, Chief Donatus Ajanma, of allegedly diverting the money belonging to the market running into tens of million of naira. In the petition signed by Chief Zack Unah, Publicity Secretary,(ATF), the traders alleged that the Anambra State Government collected huge sums of money from the aspirants ranging from N250, 000, for chairmanship aspirants, 200,000, for the post of secretary, N150,000, Vice-chairmanship position, M50, 000 for other positions as against other markets that paid N20, 000 for the purchase of forms. They said unfortunately after collecting such huge amount from the contestants, the election was arbitrarily put off to allow Ajanma from Omambala to emerge as the Caretaker Committee Chairman because they knew that he would not have won the post of chairman in Ogbogwu market if credible, free and fair election is conducted in the Union. ATF in their statement alleged that all the monies generated by the caretaker committee that were supposed to be used to work for the market were allegedly diverted by Ajanma to his personal purse without the consent of the members of CTC. “He does not give the members of the Committee anything, rather he boasts that he has connection in Awka and sidelines them. He gathers everything for himself. If anybody asks him about the money they generated, he tells you whether you know how much he spends in Awka” said the traders. They continued : The money generated from the market is almost N100m. The money includes the money from Ogbogwu park, trucks, money generated from electricity (each trader pays N1, 000.00 per month), companies’ annual dues, ID cards, donations from importers and stakeholders, percentage from stallage fees, barrow tolls at the cost of N50 per a barrow”. Unfortunately, said the traders, the Commissioner for Commerce, Market and Wealth Creation, Chief Uchenna Okafor, popularly called Wiper seemed to be working in concert with Ajanma to etnrone Omambala agenda in the market, since all complaints forwarded to him fell on deaf ears. They said they had equally sent a petition to the Commissioner on behalf of the aggrieved members where they outlined the misappropriation and misapplication of the market fund but it was swept under the carpet without response. ATF said they had authoritatively gathered that the members of Caretaker Committee were not happy and had sworn to disrupt or boycott the election if the Commissioner refused to compel Mr Ajamma to account for all the money he collected since he was made the CTC chairman of the market. The traders said : Ajamma who was imposed on other candidates as Caretaker Committee Chairman cannot preside over the election he will be a candidate. It is not possible. It negates the tenets of democracy. It is either he conducts election for other candidates or he steps down, hand over to somebody who is not contesting the election or to the electoral committee chairman if he wants to contest. This is to ensure fairness in the election” ATF said Ajanma’s Electoral Committee was flawed because he single handedly constituted the Committee, hence the traders have vowed to resist it because the current CTC members were not aware of plan for any election in the market. The group said to avoid crisis in the market which could cause break down of law and order, the election which has been slated for this January should be shelved to allow the members of the market to resolve all issues, ATF cautioned. You can’t be president of NIgeria, South East Engineers tell Umahi

…gives 21 days ultimatum. The presidential ambition of Ebonyi State Governor, David Nweze Umahi, seemed to have run into troubled water as members of his profession in the South East have told him to forget the idea since he could manage Ebonyi State. Speaking in an interview with newsmen in Umuahia the Abia State capital, chairman of Association of South East Engineers, Engr Paul Nweke, said Umahi has no capacity to become the president of NIgeria. Nweke said, it was unfortunate that a man who cannot trace the whereabouts of his fellow five engineers who came to embark on road construction in his State is talking of becoming the President of Nigeria. “He could not arrest those hoodlums led by up one “Small” up till now and the same Governor has been jumping up and down to become the president of NIgeria, when you cannot maitan security in your little State” they said.. The engineers kidnapped were Nelson Onyemeh, Ernest Edeani, Ikechukwu Ejiofor, Samuel Aneke, and Stanley Nwazulum. The engineers said the five engineers who were working in $150m African Development Bank (ADB) Ring road project at Ezza/Effium phase II in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have been missing since November 3, 2021 they were abducted by Ezza Warriors Nweke said up till now they have not been seen or their corpse released if they have been killed by the warriors. The Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, Aliyu Garba, on 28 of December 2021 despatched a special investigation team of Police officers to unravel the whereabout of the five engineers. But unfortunately, when they went into the community the hoodlums felled trees to barricade and ambushed them. In the ensuing gun battle three Police men were killed, five others were seriously injured and were now under intensive Care unit of a hospital in the State, yet these boys have not been arrested. ” If Umahi could not handle small Ezzea/ Effium crisis, how can he handle the crisis in the entire country like Boko-Haram, Banditory, High profile kidnapping with diverse and complex ethnic and religious challenges? NIgerians should totally reject him at the level of his party. He should keep his State in order before talking of leading NIgeria. said the engineers. The engineers gave him 21-day ultimatum to rescue their colleagues alive but either they have been killed, they should release heir corpses for befitting funeral as Igbo costume requires. And if after 21 days nothing happened then we shall mobilise other stakeholders for massive protest among other things, the engineers warned.

Leave Obi Cubana alone, NUF tells NIgerian security agencies.

…ask FG to tender public apology The Federal Government and its security agencies have been told to stop further harassment and intimidation of the young Igbo businessman, Chief Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana. Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF), which made the call in a statement in Awka, issued after its January 2022 general meeting said the invitation, harassment and intimidation of Obi Cubana by security operatives have become so rampant and unnecessary that it has to be condemned. Recently, Obi Cubana has been guest of Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA), the Police and Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) but they did not mention exactly the reason for the frequent invitation of the business man. The NUF in the statement signed by their President Ikemba Dede Uzor A Uzor and its Publicity Secretary, Chief Unah Zachkius, warned that “the nonsense should stop”, asking how many Northern business men including Aliko Dangote and others from other parts of the country were being harassed in such ignoble manner. Even the one in wanted list of United States of America (USA) has been protected not to extradited but they take pleasure in harassing Obi Cubana because he’s an Igbo man. NUF said that the Police officer has not been handed over to US authorities because he is a Northerner, noting that if he was an Igbo they would have hurriedly handed him over. NUF have they invited Dangote with all his sheddy business deals, why Obi Cubana. They just don’t want any other person to be wealthy like them who steal from Government treasury.” NUF further said the only sin of Obi Cubana was that he an Igbo and he gave his late mother a befitting funeral, warning that if the invitation, harassment and arrests continued, they will mobilise Igbo groups and youths to stage massive protests against Federal Government of Mohammadu Buhari and its fulanised security agencies throughout the country. NUF said the frequent invitation of Cubana was part of the policy of Buhari Government to persecute and impoverish Ndigbo, which his fulanised security agencies have the arrowhead. Attempt, said the group, to link Obi Cubana’s source of money to drug or any other crime amount to witch-hunting and insult but will fail , saying that Obi Cubana has not broken any known Nigeria law since he has the right to spend and enjoy his money the way he wants and gave Federal Government 7 days to publicly apologise to him since he is still mourning his late mother Ikemba Dede Uzor warned.

This act is barbaric and inhumane. This is coming barely two weeks after we recorded the other Ebubeagu incident, in which someone was also killed in this form and half burnt. “The Commissioner of Police condemns in totality this kind of killing and has vowed to do everything within the ambit of the law to ensure that the remaining perpetrators are brought to book.” In another development, some members of the security outfit in the Ivo LGA have been accused of torturing a robbery suspect, Nnaogo Akpoke-Anyim, to death. The police condemn jungle justice, self-help, and brutality of any kind,” she added.

112 Illegal Refineries Discovered In Rivers

At Least 112 illegal refineries have been discovered in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. Chairman of the council, Samuel Nwanosike told Channels Television that 99% of the discoveries were made in a particular community located along the OML 17 trunk lines. The discovery comes on the heels of the recent efforts by the state government to bring an end to the economic sabotage brought as a result of the illegal refineries, as well as the health implications resulting from soot pollution. Governor Nyesom Wike had pledged N460 million to the 23 local government area chairmen to fight oil bunkering in the state. This implies that each chairman will receive N20 million to destroy illegal refinery sites that have been identified in their respective domains. Wike made this pledge on Wednesday when he met with the local government chairmen, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers, Friday Eboka, and the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Aliyu Bature. “All of you should hire bulldozers, clear all those creeks,” the governor ordered the LG bosses. “The government will give you some money so that they will know that we are serious. “Those of you who are from the riverine areas, I don’t want to hear it is the creek. Go and clear those areas, apply to the state government, each of you, at least N20 million for a start to hire the equipment. “That does not mean you will wait before you start. You must start today, tomorrow. CP, please give them the security to do this work. Don’t give them two policemen.” This comes a week after the governor asked the police commissioner to collaborate with heads of other security agencies in Rivers, council chairmen, and traditional rulers to fish out all those involved in illegal bunkering and artisanal refining for prosecution. He had accused persons engaged in illegal bunkering and artisanal refining of being responsible for the soot polluting the air and endangering the health of residents of the state. The governor also declared that the state government has resolved to curb the activities of those involved in crude oil theft and refining once and for all. Meanwhile, there have been renewed calls to the Federal Government to provide modular refineries to curb the economic sabotage.

2023: South-East won’t accept VP slot, Igbo leaders warn

South-East will not accept vice-presidential slots from any political party in the 2023 presidential race, prominent Igbo leaders have told Sunday Vanguard. They also warned Igbo governors and other prominent politicians in All Progressives Congress, APC, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to resist any pressure to be the running mate of any candidate in the presidential election. The admonition followed claims that some politicians of South-East extraction, especially governors, are positioning for the vice-presidential slot instead of pushing hard for the Igbo presidency. At the moment, five people from the zone have declared for the presidency while others expressed interest but are yet to formally declare. Those who have formally made their intention known include Ebonyi State governor, Chief Dave Umahi, former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Prof Kingsley Moghalu, ex-Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, a former Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, NESG, Sam Ohuabunwa, and Nollywood actor, Mr Yule Edochie. Others interested in the race are Sen Orji Kalu and Sen Rochas Okorocha. Apart from them, some other South-East governors are believed to be interested in running for Vice President. In fact, their positions on happenings in the zone had long been interpreted to have been informed by their ambitions. Cautioning the presidential hopefuls against settling for less in the interest of the South-East, Igbo leaders told Sunday Vanguard that current deep-seated mistrust among Nigerians can only be addressed by the Igbo presidency. Prominent among those who spoke was the First Republic Minister of Aviation, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, who called on APC and PDP to present people of Igbo extraction as presidential candidates. According to him, the office of the Vice President of Nigeria should not be an option any politician from the South-East should be interested in. Amaechi added that he does not expect any serious politician from the South-East to accept the offer of being the Vice President of Nigeria expect any serious politician from the South-East to accept the offer of being the Vice President of Nigeria. His words: “For me, the office of the Vice President of Nigeria should not be the only option for the people of South East. It should not be the only option and it should not be the first option. “What I want for the South East which has been so marginalized and so badly treated in Nigeria is the chance to be the next President of Nigeria, to bring about peace, to bring total reconciliation to Nigeria and togetherness in the country. “President of Nigeria from the South-East is also going to restore peace, tranquillity and confidence in Nigeria. That is my first choice and priority. “There are many prominent Igbo who can be president of Nigeria and even president of the United Nations. But there can only be one president. “I called a meeting of Ndigbo on May 29, 2021, in my house, particularly the leaders of All Progressives Congress, APC, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. It was a joint meeting at my house. It was attended by people of South-East origin. I told them that the only way to get the office of the president is for the two political parties to nominate their candidates from the South- East. “As far as I am concerned, any South-East person who will be president, whether he is from APC or PDP, or whatever party they like, is acceptable to me. I don’t care about the party the person belongs to. What I am after is for a South-East person to become the president of the country. “There are so many Igbo who can be president but there can only be one President. I am not happy with what am seeing. Already, there are so many indications of people who want to be president and if they go to their various political parties and say that they want to be president, they are likely not going to have any chance. It is not a pleasant situation but I am working also to see how the number will be pruned. Let them come, they are still coming up. When they all come out, we will see how the number will be pruned. “As I earlier said, Vice President is not the first choice for the South-East. That is my position. Office of the President is my first choice and that is what any serious South-East politician should aim at and go for. If there is nothing else, then anybody can start thinking of considering the office of the Vice President. It is not good for the people of South-East.” Source: Vanguard
