Crypto market loses $356bn in 24 hours — and $1 trillion in two months

The value of the cryptocurrency market stood at $1.61 trillion on Saturday, representing 11.8 percent decline over the last day, according to data on CoinMarketCap. The price crash culminated in a loss of over $350 billion in one day. This is coming barely two months after the market value of the crypto market increased to $2.94 trillion, following Bitcoin’s record high of $68,000. Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation, plunged below $35,000 — its lowest dollar value since August 2021. The value of the cryptocurrency declined over 9 percent to $35,104 in the last 24 hours at 12.52 GMT+1 on Saturday. On Friday, the price dropped to $38,147 after Russia’s central bank proposed to ban all cryptocurrency operations in the country. Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, also dropped over 14 percent to $2,433. In May 2021, the bitcoin price also crashed on China clampdown on crypto miners. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had warned people who invest in cryptocurrencies, saying they are not accepted as legal tender in Nigeria. It claimed that digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, and others are largely used in terrorism financing and money laundering, considering the anonymity of virtual transactions. In February 2021, the bank directed banks to close accounts of persons or entities involved in cryptocurrency transactions within their systems.

Belonging to Biafra is not by force – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB (IPOB) has said that being part of Biafra would never be by coercion but voluntary through a referendum. The group, in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary Emma Powerful, said any tribe or ethnicity not willing to be part of the republic would not be forced to do so. It however said such tribes must conduct a referendum for their people to decide their fate on the agitation for Biafra. The group further refuted reports accusing the leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu of drawing the Biafra map, describing it as false and targeted to set the members against themselves. The statement reads in part: “Our attention has been drawn to the blackmail being sponsored by our detractors that IPOB has drawn the Biafra map. We, therefore, want to debunk such a fallacious narrative. We did not draw any Biafra map. – “We understand that some people in the coastal region of Biafra are misinformed and deceived with false information that IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu and Igbo have drawn the map of Biafra. It is false and intended to set us against ourselves. The issue of the Biafra map should not generate any heat because we know ourselves. “Ijaw National Council (INC) should understand and remember that their brother Dr Frank Opigo initiated the name Biafra which we answer today. “They should stop saying that Ijaw wasn’t conquered pre-colonial and Colonial-era because Igbo never said they were conquered. “Igbo people never conquered any tribe in the old Eastern region because our fathers saw themselves as one family, and today IPOB and Nnamdi KANU have towed the peaceful steps and accommodating spirits of our fathers but if any tribe undermined our no problem you can continue on your own. “Being part of BIAFRA will never be by coercion but a voluntary matter through a referendum. “Any tribe or ethnicity who doesn’t want to be part of Biafra will never be forced to do so. Such tribes are free to go on their own but you must conduct a referendum for your people to decide their fate on the agitation for Biafra. “We can attest that Igbo people never fought against any tribe in olden days because Igbo believe in (Onyeaghala Nwanne ya and, Ibiri Kamu biri) (live and let live). “Again Ijaw tribe and other tribes in the old Eastern region including the Mid Western region are Igbo brothers and sisters today, tomorrow and forever. “Igbo are not going to force anybody or tribe to join the fight for Biafra freedom. Let every tribe try what they can to wake up for their freedom because freedom is good and remains the best for all of us. “No tribe in the old Eastern region and Western region should allow themselves to be deceived because Nnamdi KANU and IPOB did not draw map for Biafra. Instead, we are staking our precious lives for all and it is the sacrifice we ought to pay for the realisation of our freedom and independence. “We are staking all we have for this freedom project, without the Igbo tribe being in forefront of this struggle the struggle would have been a thing of the past and we must continue until freedom is totally achieved. “Again, we appreciate the move by Izon tribe and other tribes in the region to achieve freedom but they should not look by the side because if they do, they will lose their focus then the freedom will move out of their hands, let them focus and stop displaying their hatred against Igbo tribe without Igbo they are gone in this Nigeria designed and approved for fulani to control. “They should know that IPOB and Igbo are not their problems but Fulani and the compromised politicians in our midst.”

Provisions and food items were on Saturday destroyed when fire razed the Total Foodstuff Market in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State. The market is close to the back gate of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. Victor Oluchukwu, a resident of the area, told PREMIUM TIMES that the police quickly barricaded the area to prevent people from looting the shops. “When I got there this morning, security people were there blocking (movements) and making sure that people carrying things were actually the owners of those shops. (So that) some people will not go and steal things,” Mr Oluchukwu said. The police spokesperson in Anambra State, Toochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES Saturday afternoon. He said no life was lost in the fire incident. “The fire took place around 1:30a.m. Some provision shops were affected. Police operatives quickly went to the place to cordon off the area because we discovered that, at times, hoodlums take advantage of the situation to loot, (but) we prevented that,” he said. “On the receipt of the information, police operatives quickly contacted the fire service and with the help of the people in the area the fire was successfully put off,” he added. Mr Ikenga said the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. He said the police have commenced an investigation into it.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Saturday, declared that there is going back on his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and partisan politics. Obasanjo, who was twice elected president on PDP platform, renounced his membership of the party, when he fell out with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in the buildup to the 2015 election. Obasanjo After ordering the chairman of his ward to shred the card to pieces in public, Obasanjo announced that he had quit partisan politics. Obasanjo while addressing the National Chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu and other stakeholders who visited him in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday, said he had no intention to return the partisan politics or the PDP. Ayu led four former governors and members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to a meeting at the Pent House residence of the former President located within his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, at about 12:25pm. He said “I’m no longer in partisan politics and there is nothing that can bring back. Anybody who wants my advice, I will always be there in the best interest of Nigeria. “Whatever I do in my own life…because I became president on the platform of PDP, PDP will continue to be part of my life. Since the day I tore my PDP card, that was the day I ceased to be a member of PDP. That day I vowed not to be a member of any political party. “I will continue to be a statesman.” Obasanjo told Ayu that he has the problems of PDP and Nigeria on his shoulders, and prayed God give him the wisdom to carry it. Responding, Ayu told Obasanjo that “if you leave PDP, the blood of PDP will never leave you.” He said the party would always require his fatherly advice towards governance in Nigeria. Ayu while applauding Obasanjo for being passionate about the progress, unity and development of the country, noted that “what we have now falls short of the leadership Nigeria deserves.”

Don’t abuse or insult Tinubu, Osinbajo warns supporters

AS jostling for the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential ticket gets tougher, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has warned his supporters against insulting or abusing APC National Leader and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Osinbajo served as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos under Tinubu. Both men are eyeing the APC 2023 presidential ticket, which has elicited exchanges between their supporters. Some supporters of Tinubu had accused Osinbajo of being an ingrate for not supporting Tinubu’s presidential quest despite what Tinubu did for him politically. Sources close the VP, said Osinbajo is against any one abusing Tinubu and has therefore warned his supporters: “Even if his supporters abuse my mother, don’t retaliate. On no account must he be insulted or denigrated.” Also, sources have revealed that a major plank of Osinbajo’s support base is the northern emirs, who consider Osinbajo to have demonstrated uncommon loyalty to President Muhammadu Buhari. Apart from the emirs, four Northern Governors, two from the North-West and two from the North-Central, are also said to be rooting for the Vice President. But Tinubu is said to be more popular in the north.

2023: Every candidate must declare bank assets, says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says every candidate contesting in the 2023 general elections will need to present bank statements for scrutiny. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, represented by Kunle Ajayi, INEC’s national commissioner, said this at a high-level policy roundtable on political campaign finance on Friday in Abuja. The INEC chairman also threatened to prosecute banks that failed to report suspicious transactions carried out by politicians during election campaigns. “We have not officially declared a notice for the 2023 general elections, but when we so declare, we will put our monitoring committees to motion like the central banks, the DSS, the EFCC, the ICPC, the (commercial) banks and other law enforcement agencies,” he said. “Every candidate must declare bank asset because that is where they draw out their money, so we will make them to present their statements of account right from the onset. “We will make it mandatory for them to turn in their bank statements so if they say they are doing billboards and the account remains the same, then there is a problem.” Yakubu said INEC would establish finance monitoring teams to monitor politicians to curb excessive electoral funding. He added that money politics, undue influence of money, marginalisation, particularly of women and youths and other vulnerable members of the electorates, are hampering participation. “These groups ordinarily would want to participate in the electoral process, but because of economic reasons, many of them cannot participate,” he said. “So they have decided to leave it to the money bags, those who have enough money to manipulate the system for campaign and so on. “These have become concerns to INEC, and we will be working to curb it, using the law that empowers INEC, so I am glad this meeting is holding. “We look forward to more recommendations on how we can provide solutions to issues bothering on elections, like vote-buying, issues of money bags, godfathers and how to provide a level-playing ground for everybody.”

Buhari Asks Police, Justice Ministry To Uphold Integrity In Hanifa Abubakar’s Case

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the relevant bodies to ensure justice is served in the murder of Hanifa Abubakar, the five-year-old schoolgirl killed in Kano State. He specifically ordered the police and the Ministry of Justice to uphold the integrity of the detective work that busted the case by preparing well and presenting a good case that will earn the respect of the court. The President gave the directive on Friday in a statement by his media aide, Garba Shehu, in reaction to the death of little Hanifa who was initially abducted in December last year. He expressed the nation’s condolences to the family of the schoolgirl whose body was discovered in a shallow grave in Kano after almost two months of fruitless search. President Buhari, however, commended the police and the secret service for unravelling the mystery behind the disappearance of Hanifa, and particularly for the arrest of her teacher and his accomplices suspected of the child’s kidnap and murder. According to him, the family and the whole nation which followed up on Hanifa’s travail every day since her disappearance were hoping for the girl to have returned home alive and well. The President stated that the thorough and painstaking detective operation by the law enforcement bodies, leading to the discovery of her remains and the arrest of the suspects who have already made confessions, was commendable. He described it as an achievement that should instill more public confidence in the authorities, adding, “when breakthroughs like this happen, people will talk differently of law enforcement.” President Buhari prayed for the repose of the soul of the little schoolgirl and urged her parents to bear the sad loss with courage and fortitude in God. Until her death, Hanifa was a pupil of a private school – Noble Kids Academy in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State. The Public Relations Officer in the state, Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed her death to journalists on Friday, saying her teacher, one Abdulmalik Tanko, was indicted in the murder. Abdulmalik, Kiyawa stated, confessed that he kidnapped Hanifa and took her to his house where he contacted her relatives and demanded a ransom of N6 million. He later conspired with one Hashim Isyaku to kill the girl on December 18, 2021, having realised that the victim had recognised him. Hanifa was buried in a shallow grave within the school premises located at Kwanar ‘Yan Gana in Tudun Murtala Quarters.

My govt will crush terrorists, Buhari reassures Kaduna residents

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Friday, has reassured residents of Kaduna of his regime’s determination to crush terrorists and criminal gangs operating in the state and other parts of the country. Buhari spoke late Friday in Kaduna at the State Banquet organised by Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i to commemorate his official visit to the state. The President, who commended the state’s support to security agencies, noted the establishment of a ministry dedicated to internal security. He said, ‘‘I wish to assure the people and government of Kaduna State that the Federal Government is doing its utmost to contain and crush the terrorists menacing our citizens and their property in parts of the country. On behalf of the Federal Government, I commend the efforts of the Kaduna State Government to respond to the demands of development. ‘‘The relationship between our tiers of government represents an instance of successful collaboration between the national and State governments for progress, peace and prosperity. I urge Malam Nasir El-Rufai to push on and not relent in his efforts to accelerate change and progress in Kaduna State.” Reviewing his programme in the State since he arrived on Wednesday night, Buhari expressed delight over the commissioning of projects undertaken by the State government. ‘Most of my visits to Kaduna State since 2015 have been in connection with clear strides of progress. I was here in 2017 to commission the hatchery and feed mill project of Olam, a multinational agribusiness company that has sited a major factory in Kaduna. In August 2019, I had the honour to commission Phase 2 of the Zaria Water Project and a road project. ‘‘Therefore, I am not surprised that Nasir El-Rufai and his team have undertaken such a major investment in infrastructure development. I am glad to say I have seen with my own eyes the remarkable changes across all the three Senatorial zones,’’ he said.

How SSS blocked British envoy from speaking with IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu

Operatives of the State Security Service (SSS), on Wednesday, blocked a British diplomat from speaking with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. According to PREMIUM TIMES, Eno Agodo, British Vice Consul, Lagos, had attended Mr Kanu’s trial before Binta Nyako on Wednesday in Abuja, where the Biafran agitator is being tried on a 15-count amended charge bordering on treasonable felony and terrorism. At the close of proceedings in the suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, Ms Agodo first sought the permission of Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Mr Kanu’s lead counsel to speak with his client, which was granted. But as the British diplomat made her way to the dock where Mr Kanu, who holds dual citizenship in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, was speaking with family members, she was intercepted by the Director of Legal Services of the secret police and operatives who had formed a wall around the IPOB leader. Thereafter, PREMIUM TIMES reporter sought to speak with Ms Agodo on what transpired, but she declined. Jonathan Bacon, a political counsellor at the British High Commission, had written a letter dated January 11, 2022 and addressed to the trial judge, Mrs Nyako, which he sought permission for Ms Agodo to attend Mr Kanu’s trial from January 18 to 20. In the letter entitled, ‘Nnamdi Kanu Trial-Access for British Consular Official to Attend Federal High Court, 18th to 20th January, 2022’, the British High Commission, specifically requested that Ms Agodo attended the IPOB leader’s trial as an “observer.” The United Kingdom harboured Mr Kanu after he jumped bail and fled Nigeria in 2017 when soldiers invaded his home. This stalled his trial in Nigeria for years until he was rearrested, reportedly in Kenya, and brought back to Nigeria, in June last year. While abroad, Mr Kanu continued reaching out to his Nigerian followers through social media channels as violence linked to the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed wing of IPOB, escalated in the South-east. During the period, the U.K. government also resisted calls from the Nigerian government to declare IPOB a terrorist organisation as it was done in Nigeria in 2017. Another blockade Blocking the British representative from having access to Mr Kanu on Wednesday highlights what appears to be government’s desperation to cut him off from having any contact with foreigners or their agents. A similar scenario played out during Mr Kanu’s trial on Tuesday, when Mike Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who led the IPOB leader’s defence team, made frantic but unsuccessful efforts to get Bruce Fein, a United States lawyer, to attend the court session. Mr Fein, a counsel to the secessionist group in the U.S, has not been able to have an audience with the Mr Kanu, as he claimed several attempts to visit the IPOB leader at the SSS detention facility in Abuja had been resisted. “I have not been able to meet with my client, Mr Kanu since I arrived Nigeria,” Mr Fein told our reporter in an interview last December. “Officials of the State Security Service wouldn’t let me meet Mr Kanu,” Mr Fein added, saying, the action of the spy agency is a “gross violation” of Mr Kanu’s fundamental rights. ⓘ Mr Fein had received similar treatment during previous proceedings in the case. However, a top official at the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, said the American lawyer had no right to represent the IPOB leader in a Nigerian court. “Bruce Fein has no right to represent either Mr Kanu or IPOB in any Nigerian law court,” the official who pleaded anonymity told this reporter. “Was Mr fein called to the Nigerian Bar?,” the source queried. Last week, Mr Kanu wrote the British High Commission and the U.S. embassy in Nigeria, urging them to send representatives to observe proceedings in his ongoing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The IPOB leader had premised his requests on the grounds that the presence of the British and American envoys might guarantee fair trial of his case. This newspaper could not ascertain if Ms Agodo’s presence in court was in response to Mr Kanu’s request. But the American embassy had no representative at the proceedings last Tuesday and Wednesday.
