Why I changed my mind after telling Tinubu, others I won’t run for President —Orji Kalu

Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Kalu, has said he decided to contest the 2023 presidential election after leaders from the six geopolitical zones approached him to run. This is as he revealed that he had earlier told other presidential aspirants like the former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, former president of the Senate, Pius Anyim and Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, that he won’t contest. Speaking in an interview with Silverbird Television on Friday, Kalu said the leaders cited his capability and experience, adding that he changed his mind about not contesting after due consultations coupled with the request by prominent national elders to join the contest. He expressed the belief that he has the capacity and experience to turn around the economy of the country and fight insecurity. He said, “I didn’t want to join this contest before. When I met with Senator Tinubu, I told him I was not running. When I met with Governor Umahi, I told him I was not running. When I also met with Senator Pius Anyim, I told him I wasn’t contesting. A couple of days after my discussion with them, elders from the West, elders from the North, the South-East and Niger Delta came to see me on the 5th of January (2022) and I also went to see a couple of them. “I flew from my village to tour some places and I met with them in the North, West and somewhere in Lagos and Warri and I returned on the 8th back to Igbere, my home town, and also met with the elders of my community and they said that it’s a possibility. And that is why I have not gone back to tell these people who I initially told that I will not run that I am now going to run. I will still have a meeting with them and tell them formally that I am going to run for the president.” On media reports that he attacked Tinubu, Kalu stated that they both have a deep-rooted friendship, adding that the presidential ambition of this former governor of Lagos State does not threaten his own. His words: “Tinubu is not a threat to my ambition and I am not a threat to his ambition. We are very close friends and our friendship is deep-rooted. When I and my wife went back to Abia as Governor, nobody was occupying my house in Victoria Island, Lagos. So my children were in school at that time and some were schooling at Corona schools while one was in French International school in 1998 and they were living with Senator Oluremi Tinubu. So we are like a family and politics cannot separate us. “In 2003 when Tinubu was seeking re-election and I saw that he was lagging behind, I assisted him and it’s part of what caused my problem with former President Obasanjo. So we’re a family and we cannot quarrel because of politics. He might have his idea on how to do it and I might have my own idea on how to do it. But all I know is that if we meet at Eagle Square I will give a very good account of myself.”

EXTRA: Soludo rejects ‘His Excellency’ title, opts for ‘Mr Governor’

hukwuma Soludo, governor-elect of Anambra state, has rejected “His Excellency” title, and opted for “Mr Governor” or “Charlie Nwangbafor”. Speaking at the inauguration of his 80-member transition committee in Akwa, Anambra capital city, on Thursday, Soludo said people may have to learn to call him by his name. The committee is chaired by Oby Ezekwesili, former education minister. Soludo will be sworn in as governor on March 17. “I was called his excellency a while ago, but may I plead that that ‘excellency’ tag should please wait for now. That is part of what we will discuss in this committee,” the governor-elect said. “You may just need to learn how to call me by my name, but if that isn’t good for you, then, may I request that you simply call me ‘Charlie Nwangbafor’ (Charles son of Mgbafor). “If that one is so difficult for you that you must be formal in addressing me, then you can address me as Mr Governor.” Soludo said the committee is working “pro bono” to ensure that he gets all he needs to make Anambra better. “This is an assemblage of the people I describe as wise men and women who have kindly accepted to serve our homeland, under the leadership of one of Anambra’s finest gift to the world, our own dear Oby Ezekwesili,” he said. “This committee comprises some of Nigeria’s best, and Anambra is deeply grateful that you are sacrificing your time and talent pro bono, to help our journey to a livable and prosperous smart city. “We deliberately left out some experts in security from the transition committee. We prefer to deal with this subject matter separately. “I’m not sure that would fit into this kind of place. What we will say in public is not what we will say in private, because things are no longer the same any longer in security.”

I Used N100 Rat Poison To Kill Five-Year-Old Hanifa, Kano Proprietor Confesses

When he was arrested at the Kano Police Command headquarters on Friday, he told journalists that he killed her with a rat poison that he bought for N100. “I picked her inside Keke NAPEP and I carried her to my own house where I lied to my wife that the girl was a daughter to one of the women working in my school and that the mother traveled and pleaded with us to keep the girl for some days. My wife accepted and kept the girl for that reason. “I realized that the girl’s parents were informed that while picking her, she made mention of ‘uncle’. This gave me the impression that they might be suspecting me as the uncle. “Then after some time, after some days, some of my teachers visited my house very early in the morning and when they came, I was also suspecting that they were sent over to the house to find out whether the girl was there with me; that was on the 5th day after the kidnap. “So, I decided that it was better I found a way before I would be caught. I first thought of sending this girl to another state but again, I thought the whole town was aware that she was missing. If the girl was going to be sent out through the main roads, we would be caught. So, that was when I concaved the idea of killing her.”
