PDP will surely produce Buhari’s successor – Ayu

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Iyorchia Ayu has said his party will surely produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor. He said the current alleged inept rule of the All Progressive Congress (APC) at the Federal Government had pulled the country backwards economically and deserved to be changed. Ayu spoke at a gala night hosted by the Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike for PDP Governors at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Port Harcourt on Sunday night. Ayu said the APC leadership had been unable to harness the rich diversity of Nigerians into better fortunes that should strengthen the bond of brotherhood and promote peaceful coexistence. He said: “Unfortunately, a very poor leadership has presented Nigeria at home and abroad as an extremely divided country. “We must change this narrative and the only way to change this narrative and harness not just the culture, but the environment and the richness therein, is to back the Peoples Democratic Party which is determined to produce a new leadership for this country.” Ayu said that the country would bounce back with the PDP at the saddle, describing the party’s project to replace Buhari as realisable. He said: “The PDP will definitely produce the next president and take the country back to the days when we were in power, when we cleared all foreign debts, when we were developing this country at reasonable speed; when we became the richest country on the African continent. But today we are the poverty capital of the world. All that will change.” Governors at the gala night were: Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia); Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa); Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom); Mohammed Bala (Bauchi); Samuel Ortom (Benue); Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu). Also in attendance were the Deputy Governors of Rivers and Zamfara, Dr Ipalibo Harry-Banigo and Mahdi Aliyu Mohammed Gusau; PDP national secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu and many other dignitaries.

2023: Ohanaeze shortlists Amaechi, pledges N10b for Igbo Presidency

An attempt by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo to seek the support of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum ( AYCF) in its bid to woo and support the presidential ambition of the Minister of Transport, Rt.Hon.Rotimi Amaechi for the 2023 Presidential race does not get explicit support in the North. Their host, Alhaji Yerima Shettima of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum told the Igbo leaders that the Arewa Youth would go back to their elders and report to them about their visit and mission. “I believe that you should bring out your candidate and we will bring out our own, and by the time we meet at the contest, whoever wins, should carry the day,” Yerima said. While speaking at the Head office of the AYCF in Kaduna on Monday, Secretary-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro said he was in Kaduna with his delegation to solicit the support of Northerners for an Igbo Presidency in 2023. According to Mazi Isiguzoro, “I thank my brother…Comrade Yerima Shettima for the wonderful reception..since we arrived…In fact, I’m very much amazed, the Kaduna we used to read in the dailies or watch on TV is different from the Kaduna I’m seeing. “ “Everywhere is very serene and very peaceful. I commend my brother and the state government who have made it possible to have a wonderful environment. “ FG’s pathetic lies on power supply “This is Igbo delegation for 2023 Presidency led by the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. In fact..we launched this committee about a week ago and we decided that the best thing we should do is to interface with the North.” ” This is because we know that the North with their population..vast majority, the North would always play the role of kingmaker, being the deciding factor in 2023 Presidency.” ” The best thing we should do is to migrate to the other side of the world, come to this place and interface with the real people who are holding the masses.” ” We were privileged to interface with some religious leaders who he ( Yerima) took me to. Also, we had the opportunity to meet some traditional rulers and chieftains. We’ve discussed with them in house.” ” We just opened a channel of communication so that rather than abusive words….we decided to extend a hand of friendship to the North. “ “We asked one question. What happened to the relationship between Nnamdi Azikiwe and Tafawa Balewa? What happened to the existing relationship between the North and the East? Where did we get it wrong? What happened? What transpired?” ” Is it because one person somewhere decided to paint Igbo as if we are Biafrans? No! We believe in one Nigeria. The vast majority population of Igbo are residing in the 19 Northern states with the highest investment worth about 2.3 trillion.” ” By so doing we said no, the best thing we’ve to do is to ensure that we reach out to the fulcrum of the society, the people’s General Yerima Shettima and to dialogue on the way forward as regards 2023,” he said. The leader of the Igbo delegation for the 2023 presidency, said they would continue to lobby all parts of the country for a power shift to the South East region. According to him, the Igbo nation including their kinsmen in Rivers and Delta States have abundant human resources that can produce the best for the Presidency. He mentioned politicians like Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Okorocha, Umahi, etc as fit to succeed Buhari in 2023. “We are begging the north to give us the opportunity. You should help us because we know that the north plays the role of kingmaker in the politics of this country. We are here to ask you to support an Igbo man for the presidency. There should be no more abusive words between north and south East as we used to read on pages of newspapers.” “We are for one Nigeria, we are not for Biafra. We need somebody that is of age that can unite Nigeria. We believe in one Nigeria. We have abundant human resources that can take over from Buhari.” “We have people who are committed to serving Nigeria. We have seven States including Rivers and the Delta States where we have Igbo speaking brothers. We have politicians like Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Rochas Okorocha, among others that can run for the presidency”. He however singled out Hon. Rotimi Amaechi declared that they would support him to become President in 2023. The AYCF President, Yerima Shettima told the Ohanaeze delegation that it was good to negotiate when seeking power. He however cautioned that nobody achieved good things through threat. “I have always believed in Pan Nigeria. I believe in the unity of one Nigeria. I have been part of many struggles. I am not happy that Nigeria is not where it is. People who don’t have an idea of the history of Nigeria resorted to abusive words and threats. They resort to championing the cause of Biafra. Gone are those days you use the threat to look for power.” “It is a welcome development that you are here to discuss the 2023 general election. Politics is about negotiation. You need to rise above board. Nobody will entrust power to you if you resort to the threat.” “However, democratically I don’t understand what zoning means. I believe that you should bring out your candidate and we will bring out our own, and by the time we meet at the contest, whoever wins, should carry the day. Nevertheless, we will go back to our elders and report to them about your visit and mission,” the Arewa youths leader said.

Many killed, ‘dozens abducted’ as gunmen raid Kebbi community

Many civilians have been killed following an attack by gunmen in Dankade community, Danko-Wasagu LGA of Kebbi state. A police officer and two soldiers also died in the attack which took place on Friday. Nafiu Abubakar, police public relations officer (PPRO) in Kebbi, confirmed the development to TheCable on Monday. The police spokesperson said an unconfirmed number of persons were abducted, but TheCable understands that dozens were taken hostage. “On Friday, precisely January 14, 2021, at about 3pm, bandits in their large numbers attacked Dankade village,” the police spokesperson said. “Already, we had deployed our joint patrol team including army police in the area. On receiving the report, they (joint taskforce) were called and they instantly mobilised to Dankade village and engaged the bandits in a gun duel. “Regrettably, we lost one police inspector and two soldiers. Also, 13 civilians were killed during the encounter. In the same vein, an unspecified number of people were kidnapped by the bandits. The bandits also set many houses in the village ablaze.” Abubakar added that security operatives are currently on the trail of the perpetrators to rescue the kidnapped victims. The incident is the latest in a string of attacks in the north-western state. Gunmen have been targeting locals in recent months, killing and abducting hundreds. In June last year, 88 people were killed when gunmen raided villages in the same LGA.

The Katsina State Police Command on Monday revealed that its operatives successfully repelled terrorists’ attack at Badole village, in the Kurfi Local Government Area of the state over the weekend. The spokesman for the Command, Gambo Isah, said in a statement on Monday that the terrorists had swooped on the village early Saturday morning where they, amongst others, rustled an unspecified number of domestic animals. He revealed that the operatives of the command and members of the vigilante in the council who were alerted of the incident mobilised and blocked the exit route of the terrorists at Yarrunfar Koza village. According to the PPRO, the development led to a gun duel between the security team and the terrorists. Isah added that “many terrorists” were killed in the process while all the rustled animals were recovered. The statement read in part, “On January,15,2022, at about 01.20 a.m, bandits in their numbers, attacked Badole village, Kurfi, rustled unspecified number of domestic animals. ” The DPO led a combined team of police and vigilante and blocked their exit route at Yarrunfar Koza village, Kurfi Local Government Area. BREAKING: APC Governors Forum DG Resigns

Mohammed Salihu Lukman, the Director General of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), has tendered his resignation to the Forum. According To LEADERSHIP, his resignation on Monday came barely 24 hours after the governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) met at the Kebbi State Governor’s Lodge on Sunday night. Attempts to get the reaction of the PGF DG did not turn out at the time of filling this report. The newspaper said that the decision to ease the DG out of office, with resignation as soft landing, may have been reached at the meeting of the APC governors who were said to have been divided over the fate of Lukman. A source at the meeting hinted that the governors discussed the hard stance of Lukman on the party’s leadership which he had been criticising of recent over refusal to hold the party’s national convention. Four days ago, Mr. Lukman warned the Mai Mala Buni led Caretaker Committee of the ruling party, that, delaying the convention beyond February date would further weaken the chances of the ruling party to win future elections. He asked the Buni committee to stop claiming that it was waiting for the meeting of Progressive Governors Forum before taking “all the necessary decisions to commence the process of organising the Convention. “Such a claim is not only dishonest but also taking the support of Progressive Governors for granted, which is why Progressive Governors have been reduced to punching bags of all party members regarding all the challenges facing the party,” he noted. In a statement he issued on Thursday, Lukman pointedly stated that the national caretaker committee would be demonstrating that its “new objective is probably to take APC to its political grave” if it shifts the national convention again, adding that “this should not be acceptable!” He stated: “Unless the CECPC has given itself the new responsibility of being the political and electoral undertaker of the APC, it must stop promoting some subversive campaigns suggesting that it is undertaking ‘the immediate task of addressing contestations within the Party, litigations, fallouts of recently conducted Congresses and generally reposition the Party ahead of the National Convention.’ “The more the party continues to allow the leadership of the CECPC to continue to hold everyone captive and refuse to commence the process of organising the February APC National Convention, the more party leaders would have supported the CECPC in weakening the electoral prospect of the APC. Largely on account of delaying the implementation of decision to organise the February APC National Convention, there is hardly any internal party preparation for the 2023 electoral contest beyond individual leaders declaring their personal aspirations for offices.

Delta banker ‘commits suicide’

A Delta-based banker has been found dead — less than 24 hours after his disturbing Facebook post on his mental health struggle. Edafe Bright, the spokesperson of the state police, confirmed his passing to TheCable Lifestyle on Monday. He said the case of the deceased, named Nworie Nnamdi Godson, is being investigated for any possible foul play. While details of the case are still sketchy, unconfirmed reports and social media narratives claimed Godson committed suicide on Sunday by hanging himself on a water tank scaffold at Ugbeyiyi community in Sapele. Speaking on the incident, Bright said: “It happened in Sapele. It’s confirmed. No details for now. The investigation is on. It looks like a suicide case but we’re trying to see if there’s anything [more]. We can’t rule out the possibility of foul play.” A disturbing Facebook post about mental health was attributed to Godson on Saturday. In the post, the deceased had lamented about struggling with his own mind. “I no longer have a mind of my own. Cos I now do things I later regret. The struggle is not funny anymore. I am still good at heart so u know,” he wrote in the caption of about three of his photos. After his demise, friends and well-wishers took to the comment section of the post to express their shock and pay condolence. “When he posted this there was no comment but, now that he committed suicide, everyone is here to shed crocodile tears,” one Facebook user wrote. In response, another said: “People didn’t understand that post, I for one thought it was a quote or any other caption people give to pictures. So you that understood it, why didn’t you alert other people about it. “You people should stop the habits of painting yourselves saints. People are simply showing their genuine concern. It’s possible you didn’t see it on time just the way others didn’t see it too. Stop the blame game.”

Shoot dead any prison attackers, Aregbesola orders officers

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, on Monday, ordered prisons officers to shoot dead anybody who attempts to attack any correctional centre in the country. The minister gave this order while inspecting the facility at the Agodi Custodial Centre, Ibadan. He said the officer must make it impossible for anyone to penetrate the facility because it is a red zone. Aregbesola said any attack on any correctional centre is an attack on the state and such must never be allowed again. The minister said any attempt to attack correctional centres should be a suicide attempt and perpetrators must not be allowed to live to tell the story. He said, “The most important thing is the security impregnability of this facility. Make this facility impregnable. “It is a red zone, dangerous zone. Whoever attempts to breach the security here is already dead. He must not live to tell the story. Other people will tell his or her story. “Any effort to breach our facility is not acceptable. Don’t shoot to injure, shoot to kill. Don’t shoot to disable, shoot to kill. “This is a total embodiment of the state to guarantee the security of the people. “We will do our best regarding your welfare to ensure effective service. I must commend your work for not recording any case of COVID-19 in your facility. “But most importantly, you must be effective in preventing the penetration of this facility. You must have the capacity to repel viciously any attempt to penetrate this facility.” Aregbesola at a recent Ministerial Press Briefing at the Aso Villa, 4,860 inmates of the Nigerian correctional centres have escaped from those facilities between 2020 and 2021 alone following successful jailbreaks in Benin, Owerri, and Oyo, among others. Also, only 954 of that number have been rearrested. That was before the recent jailbreak at the Jos Medium Security Custodial Centre, which resulted in 9 fatalities and escape of 252 inmates. The 252 on the loose are apart from the 10 rearrested.

Nigeria’s inflation rate rises to 15.63%

After eight months of decline, Nigeria’s headline inflation rate rose to 15.36 per cent in December 2021, from 15.50 per cent recorded in November. The Statistician-General of the Federation, Simon Harry, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing at the National Bureau of Statistics, Abuja. Earlier data from the NBS showed that headline inflation has been on a downward trajectory since April 2021. However, the trend was broken in December when year-on-year inflation climbed 0.23 points higher than figure recorded in November. Speaking at the briefing, Harry said, “However, it may interest you to note that this trend has been broken by the slight change in the month of December, 2021 as the inflation rate for all items for the month increased to 15.63 per cent, year-on-year. “Although, this is a decline when compared to the corresponding month in 2020 which recorded 15.75 per cent. “This trend clearly shows an increase from 15.40 per cent recorded in the month of November, 2021 to 15.63% in December, 2021.” “This is 0.23 per cent points higher than the rate recorded in November, 2021. He added that the change in the declining trend might have been caused by the increase in prices of goods and services driven by increased demand during the month under review, being a festive season. Details soon…

2023: I Am Not Threatened By Govs Defecting To APC, Power Belongs To God

Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi has explained that the defection by some state governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is not a threat to his political ambition, but he is rather happy to have them in the party. The governor said this on Monday during an interview on Channels Television breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily. “I feel happy rather than being threatened. My ambition is in the hand of God, power, and might belong to God. “The more we have governors in the APC, the more chance we have to win the election. The more chance we have to continue the project of Nigeria from where Mr President will stop by 2023,” Umahi responded when he was asked if he is threatened by the defections. Umahi, who is also the Chairman South-East Governors’ Forum also spoke on his recent visit to the State House in Abuja. He revealed that the purpose of the visit was not simply about his presidential ambition but also about the security and the socio-economic state of the southeast region. “The issue wasn’t just about going to the President to ask him that I want to contest. There were so many other issues I went to discuss with Mr President. “I went there to discuss solutions to our insecurity in the Southeast, and on our airport project. I went there to let him know that our airport project will be ready by May 2022 but we needed financial assistance to buy some equipment. “It was the last thing I mentioned to him. “The issue of running was by the side, and I mentioned it to him as the father of the nation and father of our political party.” Umahi, last week, declared his 2023 presidential ambition at the State House in Abuja. His declaration came about 24 hours after former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also indicated an interest in the race. Both men are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
