2023: ‘Tinubu incoming president, support him’ – MC Oluomo tells Southwest

The Vice Chairman of the South-West Zone of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo has called on the region to support the presidential ambition of Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC. MC Oluomo, in a short video, described Tinubu as an incoming President. The Lagos State Chairman of NURTW made the call while reacting to Tinubu’s visit to the Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle. Tinubu, who had visited Matawalle over the recent killing of some residents by bandits, donated N50m to victims. During the visit, the former Lagos State Governor also declared that President Muhammadu Buhari has the capacity to defeat Boko Haram, bandits, and other criminal elements. Sharing a video of Tinubu in Zamfara, on Facebook, Oluomo wrote: “My amiable APC national leader and incoming president (insha allah) visits Zamfara State Governor, Dr Bello Muhammad Matawalle, to sympathise with them over the senseless bloodletting occasioned by the nefarious activities of bandits. “This is another call to our brothers and sisters in the South-West to support our father, son and friend, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for the 2023 presidential election. A man with God is a majority.” Meanwhile, Tinubu had informed Buhari of his presidential ambition. The APC National Leader informed the President of his intention during a meeting on Monday at the State House.

Southern, middle belt leaders: No support for any party that doesn’t zone presidency to south

The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum (SMBLF) has asked political parties in the country to zone its presidential ticket to the south. In a communique issued after a meeting on Thursday in Abuja, the forum warned that any party that does not zone its ticket to the south should not expect support from the regions. The communique was jointly signed by Edwin Clark, an Ijaw national leader; Ayo Adebanjo, Afenifere leader; George Obiozor, president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo; and Pogu Bitrus, national president, Middle Belt Forum. The forum repeated its stand that the 1999 constitution is flawed and lopsided and therefore, the country should be restructured and a new constitution drafted. “The meeting extensively discussed various issues on the state of affairs in the country, particularly, the security situation, restructuring, preparations for the 2023 elections and zoning,” the communique reads. “That the extant Constitution and Structure of Nigeria are grossly flawed and lopsided. Accordingly, Forum restates its demand for the fundamental restructuring of the country by enacting a new Constitution that would enthrone equity, fairness and justice. It must be One Nation, One System. “Cites that the northern part of the country would have fully enjoyed the Office of the Presidency of the country for the full statutory period of 8 years by 2023, hence, the presidency should rotate to the South; Therefore, unequivocally, and in full resolve, call on all political parties in the country to zone their presidential tickets to the south. “Advices that any political party that does not zone its presidential ticket to the South should not expect support from the four regions; “Notes that the basis of any viable democracy, especially in a diverse and complex country such as Nigeria, is fair and even sharing of power.” The forum also condemned the “senseless killings of innocent citizens” across the country, especially in the north-west. While calling on the government and security agencies to redouble efforts on improving security, the forum urged the national assembly and governors to commit themselves to restructuring and reaffirm their commitment to Nigeria’s unity “situated on the tenets of equity, fairness, justice, and the principle of federalism”.

2023: Our choices have consequences — Seyi Makinde

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has reiterated the need for Nigerians to make the right choice at the polls as the 2023 general elections draw near. Makinde stated this in a tweet on Friday via his Twitter handle as he announced that he was taking down his tweet win which he opposed the Twitter ban imposed by the Federal Government. In a series of tweets a day after the ban, which expressed his official stand, Makinde stated that Twitter was an avenue for citizens to share their opinions and give feedback on governance. “As leaders, we should go beyond emotional reactions to issues and think about how our actions will affect the people we lead and our international ratings socially and economically. “Twitter has become the platform for young people and indeed all Nigerians to exercise their fundamental right to express and publish an opinion. They use the platform to complain, argue and give feedback to the government and its agencies who in turn, use these to improve policies. “This is a fundamental point that should be kept in mind as we debate the necessity of this suspension,” his June 5, 2021 statement read in part. With the ban on access to the microblogging site was lifted in the early hours of Thursday, Makinde expressed his hope that Nigerians would be ready to make the right choices during the elections. He wrote, “As I take down my pinned tweet, which showed my unequivocal stand against the #TwitterBan which lasted 222 days, I’d like to remind us all that our choices have consequences. “With the 2023 elections around the corner, I hope we are prepared to make the right electoral choices.”

Security: We have done our best, we’ll do more —Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his regime has done its best and will continue to do more by pursuing coherent and consistent policies to deal with terrorism. This is as he urged Nigerians to be fair to his government in assessing the security issue in the country by reflecting on what it obtained when he took over in 2015, and the successes as well as performance which mark a decisive break from the past; particularly in the Northeast and the South-South, adding that the Northwest which had given the nation some “headache” will experience a turnaround for the better. Buhari spoke on Friday during a visit to the State House, Abuja, by the Grand Khalifa of the Tijjaniyya Islamic Movement World-Wide, Tidjani Ali Bin Arabi. The President, who said the current regime is well aware of its responsibility regarding security, urged citizens to take responsibility and show interest in their safety and complement what the government is doing. He said, “We have done our best, and we will continue to do more by pursuing coherent and consistent policies to deal with terrorism. I hope God will listen to our prayers.” To the Governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, who brought the Grand Khalifa to Nigeria, Buhari said, “We thank you for inviting them to come to pray for peace and stability in our country. We are grateful that they agreed to come.” Ganduje, in introducing the Khalifa and his delegation, which included the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero and the leader of the Tijjaniyya Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, said the Kano State government invited the Tijjaniyya World Leader to the country to lead faithful in prayer considering the complexities around security in particular. He said the visit of the Grand Khalifa had also rekindled the old ties between the Tijjaniya and the many cultural and educational institutions in Nigeria. The Tijjaniyya leader in the country, Bauchi and the Grand Khalifa, Bin Arabi, extolled the existing cordial relations between Nigeria and Algeria and prayed for guidance and blessings for the country and its leaders. Speaking to State House Correspondents afterwards, Ganduje said the Grand Khalifa’s visit is meant to rekindle the relationship “because Kano is an old civilization, with so many Ulama (Islamic scholars) from Algeria hundreds of years ago, who came to Kano to assist the development of Sharia leadership. “We invited him and his team to pray for Nigeria for peace, stability and prosperity, and also to pray for peace and stability of Kano state and the whole of Nigeria. We are all aware of the security challenges we’re having, the federal and state governments, we are all doing our best. “We offered national prayers for the peace and stability of this country. And to round it up, we decided to have a courtesy call with Mr President. They prayed for him and indicated the importance of the relationship between Algeria and Nigeria and their continued cooperation in prayers for peace and stability. That is what brought us to the villa.” The Governor added that the delegation constituted a committee to consider education, commerce, and agriculture issues. Asked about any sustainable structures to resolve the Almajiri issue, he said Kano has the highest number of Almajiri children in Nigeria. Ganduje revealed that there are now regulations to prosecute the parents of Almajiris and out-of-school children. “But let me tell you, we have taken statistics. Most of these Almajiri are not indigenes of Kano State, and as Nigerians, they are free to live anywhere they want in this country. We have introduced free and compulsory primary and secondary education in Kano State. We have built many Islamiya schools. We have reformed the Almajiri system of education. “We have also embarked on repatriation of Almajiris back to their respective states, some even to the Republic of Niger, Republic of Cameroon. But as you will know, unless there’s universal legislation, preventing the movement of school-aged children from one state to another is a problem that will remain for a long time because Kano is a commercial nerve centre of the Northern part of this country and also some West African countries. “We have enacted a law; any parent that does not put their child into school will be prosecuted. So, now, we have established a whole agency that is now evacuating the Almajiri to their respective states. And those who are in Kano enjoy the free education facilities. So, that is the effort we are making,” he said.

In Niger Communities, Boko Haram Bans Transportation of Farm Produce With Trucks, Says It’s Greed

In Bana, Kwapaena, Unguwan Madaki, Koppa and Kurebe communities, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, farmers scarcely benefit from their labour as marauding Boko Haram fighters determine what they take home. According to a resident of one of the communities, the jihadists also collect levies to grant farmers access to their farms. “They would extort millions of naira from us with an agreement that they would not encroach on our farms again,” the source said. “But they would come back.” FIJ learned that one person was killed in Kurebe on Thursday, while an unspecified number of persons went missing. “We would not know if they were kidnapped, or they fled through the bush,” a village elder said. DIVIDE AND SHARE Kauru, a permeable border linking Kaduna with Niger State, gives Boko Haram fighters unchecked access to these villages, as security officers are not present. These agrarian communities are now governed by Boko Haram jihadists, who ban farm owners from their own farms. “This always comes when the farmers want to cultivate,” a youth leader in Kurebe told FIJ. “They would divide our farm produce and give us little to take home. Let us say out of 100 bags of maize, the gun-wielding fighters may decide to give the owner 20 bags after strenuous negotiations.” ‘DON’T BE GREEDY; COME WITH MOTORCYCLES’ The Boko Haram group in Niger State prohibits the use of trucks to transport farm produce. They call it greed. “Don’t be greedy. Come with your motorcycles, not a four-wheel vehicle to get the portion of your crops,” some villagers quoted the criminals to have said. A resident of Bana said the terrorists’ statement is law. “We dare not go to our farms with a lorry for cultivation,” he said. FIJ learned that transporting farm produce with a bicycle could be stressful. “How much petrol would my bike consume to and from the farm to fetch my goods?” A Kurebe farmer asked. “Pray they don’t get angry with you in the process; they may abduct or kill you again.” In a statement on Thursday, Abubakar Sanni Bello, the state governor, said the situation could trigger food scarcity. “The worrisome part of the security challenges is the inability of the farmers to harvest their farm produce, which may likely trigger food scarcity in the state,” he said. “We are worried by the nefarious activities of these terrorists. Desperation has been noticed among them as a result of the onslaught of security agents, which has made them target unsuspecting rural inhabitants.” FIJ

I’ll be showcasing what I do for a living, says Obi Cubana amid NDLEA, EFCC probe

Obi Cubana, the Nigerian socialite, says he’ll be more open about what he does for a living in 2022. The entrepreneur, whose real name is Obi Iyiegbu, was reported to have been grilled by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Thursday over allegations linking him to an illegal narcotics business. In a post via his Instagram page, Cubana shared the picture of what he said was the very first club he built. “The first-ever club we built, Ibiza, established 13th October 2006! 16yrs and still standing tall! If you never come here that year for Abuja, you never start! This year! Showcasing what we do for a living!” the entrepreneur wrote. In the NDLEA’s case against Cubana, sources in the know of the case had been quoted as revealing that suspicious payments were made into Cubana’s account by three convicted drug dealers from Malaysia, Nigeria, and India. It was gathered that the socialite was allowed to go home in order to get some documents and return at a later date. It is also understood that the NDLEA and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC) have widened their probe into Obi Cubana and his business based on the premise that he may be involved in the drug business. Cubana, who has been in the nightclub business since 2006, made headlines globally last July when he organised a massively attended lavish funeral for Ezinne Iyiegbu, his mother, in Oba, Idemili South LGA of Anambra state. The fresh case comes after the EFCC had early November similarly grilled Cubana for alleged money laundering and tax fraud.
