Bandits abduct many traders on Kaduna highway

Suspected bandits on Wednesday abducted unspecified numbers of traders travelling to Kano from Birnin Gwari Local Government of Kaduna State. A driver who witnessed the incident told PREMIUM TIMES that the gunmen blocked the highway between Birnin Gwari and Kaduna at Unguwar Yako forest where they abducted the traders. The source said the abducted persons were among dozens of travellers going from Birnin Gwari and neighboring communities in Niger State to Kano on routine business trips. “We were travelling in a convoy with security escorts but they (bandits) abducted those who moved ahead of the convoy, which made them easy preys for the bandits. captives. The soldiers are tracing them, we are stranded at a dangerous spot in the forest (Unguwar Yako) while the security escorts are chasing to rescue the abducted traders,” the source said. The latest incident occurred less than a month after over 70 travellers were abducted along the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari road in Kaduna State. That incident on December 23, 2021 happened around Udawa village after Buruku in Chikun Local Government Area of the state. The police spokesperson in Kaduna, Mohammed Jalige, did not respond to phone calls Wednesday afternoon to comment on the incident. Locals in the adjoining states ply the Birnin Gwari highway daily with heavy security escort but that does not deter bandits from routinely abducting travellers.

Nigerians’ll say and write good things about us after our tenure – Lawan

The majority of Nigerians are happy with the federal lawmakers and by extension, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has said. He said many citizens would, after their tenure, say and write good commentaries about the National Assembly and what they achieved. Mr Lawan made these comments at the event of his 63rd birthday celebration in Abuja on Wednesday. His statement comes amid criticisms from many Nigerians to the lawmakers for major faults like failing to check the excesses of the Executive arm and always doing the bidding of the president. Many have also accused the lawmakers of chasing personal interests and breaking several laws than looking out for Nigerians. Over the years, aggrieved Nigerians have described the ninth assembly as a rubber stamp for the president. But this “name”, Mr Lawan said, will not deter the lawmakers from considering and passing pro-people legislations needed for the development and advancement of the country. “We believe that there is a price to pay for anything, but we are patriotic. Let us be called any name, what we want to do and achieve is for our country to be better. “Tomorrow, some of these people that are calling us all types of names will be writing very good commentaries about what we have been able to achieve in this ninth National Assembly. “Majority of Nigerians are happy with what we are doing, we are not perfect, we make our errors, and we will correct them. ⓘ “We identify with our citizens, but we will always do what is in the best interest of our country.” On insecurity, the Senate President said Nigerians are tired of stories on killings – a situation he said is “not too good for the country.” While referring to the recent killings of over 200 people in different communities in Zamfara State, Mr Lawan, said the government is concerned. He also expressed optimism that things will turn around for the better within the remaining one and half years left for this administration. This is even as he commended the armed forces for their efforts so far. “In supporting the security agencies for more potent war against the killers in the land, the National Assembly has appropriated over a trillion for security in the 2022 budget, which will be monitored very well for desired results. “In achieving this, our relevant committees will ensure that procurement process is transparent and what and what projected to be bought or acquired, are bought. “The security situation in the country is begging for more attention and it shall be given because that is the primary purpose of governance, ” he said. NASS concerned about borrowings Despite the consistent borrowings by the federal government and the Senate’s speedy approval of loan requests, Mr Lawan said the National Assembly is “concerned.” ⓘ The borrowings, he said, will continue if expected revenues are not generated by agencies saddled with that purposes. “Nobody likes taking loans, borrowing or accumulating debts, whether as an individual, a family, a community or as a country. “But what can you do when you’re not able to generate enough? We are as concerned as anybody else about our level of borrowing, even though we have not saturated, but if we can do better, why not reduce, and the best way to reduce is to get more revenues from especially independent sources. “The government-owned enterprises are supposed to give us more money. In 2022, we are expecting maybe about a trillion, I’m not an economist, but I believe that we should be expecting maybe double or triple from them. “We must support them, we must supervise them, and we must keep them on their toes for us to have more revenues in other to reduce the level of borrowing,” he said. He further disclosed that the Senate would, in the first quarter of 2022, focus on addressing the challenges of revenue generation, collection and remittance to shore up earnings by the federal government.

University of Abuja increases school fees

Some students of the University of Abuja on Wednesday in separate interviews with The PUNCH lamented the decision of the school authorities to increase their tuition fees. This is as some of the students took to popular micro-blogging platform, Twitter, to lament the increment which was described as both ”unfair” and ”unjust” in protest. According to a student who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, some of them had been struggling to gather money for payment of the former fees due to the economic situation in the country but were shocked to learn of the new hike in fees. “Some of us are still struggling to make sure that our fees are complete and then we heard of the increment. There is economic hardship in this country. Where do they expect us to get the money to pay? Some of the people who spoke to the Vice Chancellor said the school explained that they needed money to construct some buildings; who will use the buildings if we cannot pay our school fees?” Another student also lamented the constant increment in fees which she claimed was also experienced in 2020. “The fees were increased in 2020. The funny thing is that new students have two weeks to pay. This is a federal university and not a private school, why is the school always increasing its fees? A student who also lamented his plight on Twitter via @akashi68 said, “Third time in a row, University of Abuja has and continues to increase school fees, adding 10k to every session, I paid 27k later paid 37k, now it is 47k”. But the spokesperson for the university, Dr. Habib Yakoob, when contacted by our correspondent, explained that the increment was a slight one. He explained that the university could no longer depend on the government for funds. He said, “The increment is not that significant; it was a slight increment but you see, no matter what anybody says, there would not be enough justification for why it is increased because even one kobo might not be affordable for our students. So, we sympathise with them but do remember that even some of our lecturers and other members of staff also have their children here, So, everybody is involved. “The University of Abuja is driving towards being a world-class university; a lot of developments have been taking place. We cannot also rely on the government for funds for the good things that the vice chancellor, the university management will want to carry out. So many projects and development are going on. So, with all of these, it requires some money and everybody is being taxed, not only the students. And it is just a slight review. There were consultations, it is not that the vice chancellor just woke up and decided to increase the fees,” he said.

Why I joined politics -Ex-COAS Ihejirika

A former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.), said that he joined politics to be able to contribute his quota as a former security chief toward the peace, security and unity of the country. Ihejirika said this at a news conference in his Ovim country home in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia. He also hinged his reason on the fact that he needed a platform “to make myself available for service both at the state and national levels”. He said that he did not join the All Progressives Congress “under pressure” or to evade probe by the government. The former Army chief also spoke on the current state of insecurity in the country. “I left office at a time Boko Haram was building up and we did our best to stem the tide,” he said. He said that he had availed himself of available opportunities, including the Annual COAS Conference by the Ministry of Defence, to offer advice on how the nation’s security challenges could be surmounted. “I can say that a lot has been achieved by the Armed Forces in tackling Boko Haram insurgency,” he said. Ihejirika noted that the APC-led Federal Government had laid a solid foundation for the growth and development of the country. He spoke against the fear that Nigerians might vote against APC in 2023 because of the numerous socio-economic challenges that have bedeviled the country since it took over power. The former COAS said that it would not be right for anyone to say that the party had not made any meaningful impact since it formed the government in 2015. According to him, governance is like a building block. When the foundation has been properly laid, one can now build on it. “I’m sure that APC has made substantial efforts toward national development since it took over power. “It is for the next administration to build on the achievements recorded by the present government,” he said. Ihejirika cited the road and railway infrastructure and other development initiatives as some of of the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. He also hailed the federal government’s interventions in agriculture, using the Central Bank of Nigeria to drive a revolution in the sector. “There is, however, room for improvement in all sectors of governance in the country,” he said. The former COAS said that greater success against insecurity could be achieved, with necessary logistics support and incentives by the government to the security agencies. He advised that vigilance groups should collaborate with security agencies and that the people should assist with relevant and timely information on security breaches. “Once these measures are taken care of, we can be sure that security will improve tremendously,” he said. Ihejirika further said the recent wave of kidnapping in Akara-Ovim-Uturu axis in his local government was “not a case of invasion against Isuikwuato,” popularly called “the land of Generals”. “Rather, it was a criminal attack launched by kidnappers to extort money from their victims, with the connivance of some locals,” he said. On the agitation by the proscribed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), Ihejrika said that although the world recognized peaceful agitations and protests, such actions lose sympathy once they become violent. He, however, urged the Federal Government, “as the father of all”, to approach the issue through dialogue, saying that the emphasis should be to achieve peace and unity of the country. Ihejirika, who is speculated as harbouring governorship ambition, declined to confirm or deny such bid. He said, “When we get to the bridge, we will know how to cross it”. He said that the Constitution did not provide for independent candidate and that it was the responsibility of political parties to decide on who should be their flagbearers. Ihejirika was also noncommital in his comment, concerning the zone that should produce the governor in 2023. He said: “The important thing is that in selecting the governorship candidates by the parties, there should be consideration for fairness and competence. “It is my hope that the nation shall get to a level where nobody would be concerned about zoning. That is when we know we have grown. “Abia people must be focused for us to achieve good governance. “Anybody that must be governor must be focussed, visionary and prepared to have sleepless nights to tackle the enormous developmental challenges facing the state. “The person must be able to make sacrifices. It is not just for enjoyment, going to parties and being addressed as His Excellency.” The APC chieftain hoped that the leadership crisis rocking the party in the state would be resolved early for it to move forward. The party is divided into two factions, led by Chief Donatus Nwankpa and Dr Kingsley Ononogbu, respectively. (NAN)

2023: AfDB President, Akinwunmi Adesina denies endorsing Tinubu for President

The Senior Advisor on communications to the president of African Development Bank (AfDB) Akinwunmi Adesina, Victor Oladokun, has described as “untrue, mischievous and fraudulent” the claims that Adesina has endorsed Bola Tinubu for president. Victor Oladokun, while refuting the endorsement, said “For the avoidance of doubt, no such statement or endorsement has been made by the President of AfDB.” A photograph, which has been circulating on social media, contained a statement endorsing Tinubu and attributed it to Adesina. But Oladokun insisted Adesina did not issue the statement. Boko Haram still in control of 2 Borno LGAs, says Zulum Part of the debunked statement credited to Adesina read: “If Senator Bola Tinubu could make Lagos the 5th richest economy in Africa and the safest State in Nigeria then be sure that he will as Nigeria President.” But Oladokun refuted the endorsement, insisting that Adesina did not issue the statement. He said: “For the avoidance of doubt, no such statement or endorsement has been made by the President of AfDB.” Recall that the former Governor of Lagos State and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Monday, announced his interest in contesting for the country’s number one seat in 2023.

NAF Special Forces Rescue 26 Kidnap Victims In Kaduna

Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Special Forces (SF) on Wednesday rescued 26 kidnapped victims while on a fighting patrol along Birnin Gwari-Kaduna Road. NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet in a statement, said that the rescue operation occurred when the SF came across five abandoned vehicles with their doors ajar near Anguwar Yako, an indication of forced removal or evacuation and likely kidnap scene. After a thorough search further into the hinterland, a total of 26 victims were rescued. On interrogation, the victims who were traveling from Birnin Gwari to various locations including Kaduna, Minna and Kano, revealed that while enroute, a large number of bandits in three groups suddenly appeared from the bushes from 3 different directions along the route and surrounded their vehicles.
