Nigeria Air Applies For Operational Licence, Notifies NCAA

The Federal Ministry of Aviation has confirmed that the country’s proposed national carrier, Nigerian Air, has applied for a transport licence.   A source who craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter said there was a public notice to that effect as part of the process for getting an operating licence. The source said, “It is correct; they have applied for a licence already, but part of the process is that after you applied, you must come out with a public notice which was what they did today,” he said. However, there is confusion about the application of a transport licence by the national carrier to operate scheduled and non-scheduled passenger and cargo services in the nation’s aviation sector. In an chat with newsmen the general manager, Public Relations, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), yesterday, Sam Adurogboye, said he was not aware of Nigeria Air’s application for a transport licence. “I don’t have the information. I have not been able to confirm that. I can’t confirm or deny it,” Adurogboye said. However, Nigeria Air Limited, the country’s proposed national carrier, said it had applied to the NCAA for a licence to operate scheduled and non-scheduled passenger and cargo services. The company said this in a public notice as part of the requirements for granting an Air Operating Licence. The notice stated that any person or organisation with objection should make it known within 28 days. “Such objection or representation should be forwarded to: The director-general, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Domestic Wing, Abuja,” it said. In the notice, Nigeria Air further listed its three-member board of directors/ trustees, Alexander Musa Adeyemi, Mohammed Shuaibu Naibi and Mohammed Rabiu Shehu. Earlier this month, the federal government asked private sector partners to submit proposals for the takeover of the national carrier. “To this end, the FG, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation, is inviting interested private parties to submit proposals for the takeover and further development of the national carrier, the recently launched ‘Nigeria Air’ to take advantage of the opportunities of the largest market in Africa,” according to a statement from the ministry. “The private sector partners/consortia are expected to comprise an International Airline (max. 49 per cent shares), and Nigerian Financial and Institutional Investors (min. 46 per cent shares), so that the total Nigerian shareholding will hold a minimum of 51 per cent of the shares of Nigeria Air’ (including the five per cent non-interactive FGN share), as required by international laws for a national carrier.”

Others who spoke to NAN expressed same feeling, adding that their minds were never at rest as a result of the non-contact with relatives on board the attacked train. A staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, who was also in the ill-fated train, told NAN that some of the passengers had fled into the bush for safety when the incident occurred. “Nobody can ascertain whether passengers were kidnaped or not, but the pandemonium must have caused a lot of people to run into the bush to safeguard their lives,” said the staff, who did not want his name mentioned. NAN reports that the Kaduna-bound train, which left Abuja 6pm on Monday, was attacked by suspected terrorists around 7.45 pm, with just 15 minutes drive left for it to arrive in Kaduna. Meanwhile, train service, including other business activities at the Rigasa Railway station, Kaduna, had been grounded as a result of the incident. (NAN)

Like Azman, Air Peace Suspends Flights To Kaduna Airport

Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest flight carrier, has suspended operations to Kaduna International Airport. A source disclosed this to Daily Trust, attributing the development to the gun attack around the airport at the weekend. Daily Trust had reported how bandits gunned down a local guard attached to the Nigerian Airspace Management Authority on Saturday. The military had engaged the bandits in heavy shootout, which led to a delay of a Lagos-bound Azman flight. On Tuesday, Azman announced an indefinite suspension of its flights to Kaduna over insecurity. Hours later, the news of Air Peace halting operations to Kaduna broke. Air Peace Spokesman, Stanley Olisa confirmed the development to our correspondent, but did not go into details.

Competent person, not zone should be priority —Tambuwal

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State, has said having a competent person as president in 2023 should be a priority, not zoning, claiming that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse which requires collective efforts to save it. The Governor spoke when members of the Concerned Citizens of Nigeria, CCN, bought form for him to contest the 2023 Presidential election under the auspices of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, visited him.   “As our situation is in Nigeria today and in time like this, when the situation is so dire and the country is in distress, members of that community or country must come together and put whatever differences they have aside to save the country. It calls for every concerted effort from everyone and all concerned citizen to put their hands together to rescue it from an imminent collapse,” he said. According to him, having seen the failure of the All Progressives Congress, APC, misrule about two years after it came to power, he and his allies left the party for the PDP. He said: “It behooves on us, as responsible leaders of this country, to once again, come together to rescue Nigeria. It would be too bad for Nigeria if APC remains in charge of affairs after 2023. “Things are rather getting from bad to worse. The situation demands us to rise to the challenge of working towards changing the defective APC government at the centre.”   He added that seeking the “Presidency is a collective thing. No single individual can do it alone. No single zone can do it alone. No state can do it alone. No tribe can do it alone. No members of a particular faith can do it alone.”

Two die after Russian strike on Mykolaiv govt building

A Russian strike battered the regional government building in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, a key port under heavy assault for weeks, the regional governor said on Tuesday. “The regional administration building was hit,” governor Vitaly Kim wrote on Facebook. He said that most people inside the building had not been injured but several civilians and soldiers were unaccounted for. AFP journalists on the scene in the aftermath of the attack said the bodies of two people were pulled from debris. “We’re clearing the rubble. Half the building was destroyed. My office was hit,” Kim said in a video statement. AFP footage showed a tall and grey administrative building, with a large section torn away and debris littering nearby streets. “Eight civilians are still under the rubble. We hope to be able to get them out,” Kim said. “We are also looking for three soldiers”. Russian attacks on Mykolaiv, which had been under heavy assault for weeks, appeared to be easing recently. The frontlines seemed to have receded from Mykolaiv, with a Ukrainian counteroffensive being mounted in Kherson, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) to the southeast. “I was having breakfast in my apartment,” Donald, 69, from Canada, told AFP journalists in Mykolaiv. “I heard a whoosh, then a boom and my windows rattled”. “It’s scary. We have been lucky here in Mykolaiv. We haven’t had that many explosions in the centre of the city,” the retired Canadian postal worker with Ukrainian residency added. Mykolaiv is a key city on the road to Odessa, Ukraine’s biggest port, and its capture would represent a serious gain in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, launched in late February. AFP

Ukraine: Latest developments you should know

The nearly five-week-old Russo-Ukrainian war has left in its wake thousands dead and millions displaced. There have been reports of shelling, bloodbath, and key infrastructure collapse – with a wave of sanctions that throttle Moscow as much as setting the global community’s teeth on edge. Below are the latest developments you cannot afford to miss… – Talks begin in Turkey – Russia and Ukraine begin their first face-to-face talks in weeks at Dolmabahce palace in Istanbul to try and end the nearly five-week-old war which has killed an estimated 20,000 people. Welcoming the delegations, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says “both parties have legitimate concerns” and urges them to “put an end to this tragedy”. “The whole world is waiting for good news from you,” he says. – ‘We don’t trade sovereignty’ – Russian President Vladimir Putin has demanded the “demilitarisation” and “denazification” of Ukraine, that it become a neutral country and that Kyiv recognize the breakaway Donbas region and Russian-annexed Crimea peninsula as no longer part of Ukraine. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba says the talks will focus on easing the humanitarian situation, as there is little room for agreement on Putin’s territorial demands. He states boldly, “We do not trade people, land and sovereignty”. – Evacuations resume – Ukraine says it is resuming the evacuation of civilians from war-scarred regions after a one-day pause over what it called the threat of Russian attacks. “Three humanitarian corridors were agreed for today,” Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk says on Telegram. – Key Kyiv suburb recaptured – Ukrainian forces have “liberated” the much fought-over Western Kyiv suburb of Irpin, the country’s interior minister says. But fighting appeared to be continuing around the area, from where Russian forces were attempting to advance towards the capital, AFP journalists report. Ukraine says Russia is still trying to break through to Kyiv, despite signals from Moscow that it is planning to scale back its offensive to focus on the Eastern Donbas region. – Mykolaiv government building hit – A Russian strike has hit the regional government building in the Southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, a key port that has been under heavy assault for weeks, the regional governor says. Governor Vitaly Kim says most people inside the building “escaped miraculously” but several civilians and soldiers are unaccounted for. – Poisoning report – Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich and Ukrainian negotiators were targets of a suspected poison attack at peace talks earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing people familiar with the matter. Ukrainian officials decline to confirm the incident, advising people to follow “only the official information” and warning about “various conspiracy theories”. Abramovich and the negotiators reportedly developed symptoms including red eyes and peeling skin, though they later recovered. – Wagner group in Ukraine: UK – Britain’s defence ministry says Russia’s Wagner Group has deployed its mercenaries to Eastern Ukraine, adding that more than 1,000 fighters are expected to participate in the war after Russian setbacks. – Biden continues damage limitation – US President Joe Biden is again forced to defend his remarks that Putin “cannot stay in power”, saying the comments did not signal a push for regime change but merely expressed his “moral outrage”. The White House unveils budget plans, including $6.9 billion (6.3 billion euros) in funding for Ukraine and NATO, with another $1 billion towards countering Moscow’s influence. – 5,000 dead in Mariupol – A senior Ukrainian official says at least 5,000 people have been buried in the besieged Southern city of Mariupol since the invasion began, but that bodies have gone uncollected for the past 10 days amid continuing Russian shelling. The foreign ministry describes the humanitarian situation in the city as “catastrophic”. – $565 billion hit – Ukraine’s Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko says the invasion has cost her country an estimated $564.9 billion, including immediate damage and expected hits to trade and economic activity. – Don’t eat, don’t drink at peace talks – Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba gave the warning on Tuesday following a report about the poisoning of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich and Ukrainian negotiators, urging ”anyone going through negotiations with the Russian Federation not to eat or drink anything”. “Preferably avoid touching any surface,” Kuleba added. It comes as discussions between Ukrainian and Russian delegations are set to continue in Turkey on Tuesday. In more than a month of the war, negotiators from Ukraine and Russia have met three times in the border region of Belarus, talks then shifted online. On Sunday, the Turkish presidential office named Istanbul the venue for the next talks. According to him, a face-to-face meeting would allow for more substantive negotiations than a video link. AFP
