2023: Coalition unable to reach AfDB President, Adesina after procuring N100m APC forms

The coalition of 28 groups which procured an All Progressives Congress APC Presidential Nomination and Expression of Interest forms for the President, African Development Bank AfDB, Akinwumi Adesina has said it did not have the consent of the continental public servant to purchase the forms. According to the coalition, 24 hours after paying for the forms, it has not been able to reach the banker. It however said Adesina remained the best man for the job and that the groups needed to procure the forms to meet with relevant deadlines before trying to convince Mr Adesina. This was as the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu dismissed insinuations that he could one day enter the 2023 presidential race. Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi in a statement on Sunday said any such innuendo or proposition is preposterous. He said; “Our attention has been drawn to innuendoes in certain quarters that Nigerians should not be surprised if the INEC Chairman joins the Presidential race or urging him to do so. It is a preposterous proposition. It will not happen. “The Chairman remains an umpire committed to free, fair and credible elections. His constitutional responsibilities as the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federation and Returning Officer for the presidential election are onerous enough for him to even contemplate straying into extraneous matters at variance with the law, morality and his personal principles. “The Chairman will continue to discharge his responsibilities without affection for, or illwill against, any political party or candidate”. Adesina unreachable Speaking on Sunday after physically picking the forms at the International Conference Centre ICC in Abuja, the coalition said it has not been able to reach Mr Adesina. The coalition had earlier on Saturday paid for the forms and it said between the period it paid for the forms and when it picked them on Sunday, it was yet unable to get across to Mr Adesina. Leader of the Youth Arise Movement, one of the groups in the coalition, Babatunde Ademola, said they are very certain that Mr Adesina is a member of the ruling party. He said; “I am one of the group leaders of this team of 28 groups that have been working tirelessly and consulting across the country and even outside the country to ensure that we get him to come and obey the clarion call. “I will tell you significantly that we have tried to reach out to him, we have sent messages, we have looked at any which way we will get across to him. We have not gotten any definite response from him, but because we know the Constitution of Nigeria is very clear, and the Act that governs the umpire for electioneering is also clear, and we know that the timing is not on our side and we believe that for such person after we have looked at the situation of this country, we need Dr Adesina to come and solve Nigeria’s problem and because of this, we have put our resources together. “It is very certain that such a man who knows very well that when he was contesting for the AfDB, the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, supported him wholeheartedly for the first time, supported him wholeheartedly for the second time, such person will not want to throw away the call of over 200 million Nigerians and also feel that he cannot defend the legacy and the goodwill of the President of Nigeria. “It is a time for him to come and reciprocate the good gesture that President Muhammadu Buhari has given to him by accepting this forms that we have struggled to purchase. “It is not easy to gather N100 million but we have ensured that we gather as many people as possible. Like he said, on the issue of if we are going to meet up, we have people on ground and we are very certain that he is a member of APC before we begin to do what we are doing. So, we are calling him to come out and accept this form from us. It is a gift to serve this country and solve our problems. We are calling Adesina because it is a call to save Nigeria and I think he is going to accept”. On when the coalition would present the forms to Mr Adesina, he said; “By the grace of God we will ensure that, we know that he is not available, right now. We have been trying to reach him, but when we get him we will inform you”. President of the One Nigeria Group, Mohammed Saleh who led the delegation said Adesina is a man of proven integrity and experience. “He has done so much for Nigeria as Minister for Agriculture. He has solved the problems of so many farmers, created so many jobs by solving the corruption in the agricultural sector. Particularly the fertilizer, which he brought the e-wallet for fertilizer which the farmers are enjoying now and it has created a lot of jobs. It has also helped millions of farmers in Nigeria which they are still benefiting and also as President, African Development Bank he has brought a lot of initiatives that solve Africa’s food security problem. So, we will like him to come back home and apply it here in Nigeria”. On whether Adesina is a member of the APC and if he would be able to get party delegates to vote for him, Mr Saleh said; “When we get there, we will cross that bridge, don’t worry about that. First, the most significant thing is for us to get him to agree and come and collect the forms, sign it for us and then join the race. That is the most significant thing at the moment. Issue of delegates, everybody and I know all Nigerians apart from not even the delegates even you, everybody in Nigeria knows that Adesina has the capacity to bring Nigeria back from

2023: Ganduje endorses deputy as successor

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state has endorsed his deputy, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, as the preferred choice of the All Progressives Congress for the 2023 governorship election. It was gathered that the choice of Gawuna was made at a stakeholders’ meeting presided over by the governor on Saturday. The stakeholders were also said to have agreed that the former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Murtala Sule Garo, should be the running mate of Gawuna in the election. It was gathered that it the took intervention of party leaders and elder statesmen to prevail on Garo to step down for Gawuna. Garo, who is believed to have control of the party structure at the local government level, was seen as the preferred candidate of the wife of the governor, Hafsat Ganduje. The incumbent governor had served as the deputy of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso during the two terms he governed Kano. If Gawuna wins the 2023 governorship election, the tradition of deputy governors succeeding their principals would have been maintained in Kano’s recent political era. Meanwhile, Governor Ganduje is expected to pick the nomination and expression of interest forms for the Kano North Senatorial District on Monday. The senatorial seat is currently being occupied by Senator Jibril Barau, a strong member of the defunct faction of APC in the state that was led by former governor Ibrahim Shekarau.

APC Primary: My chances of winning Presidential Ticket, high — Tinubu

The National leader of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said he remains unshaken and very confident of winning the presidential ticket of the APC. The presidential hopeful who is in the race with over 20 other aspirants in the APC spoke weekend in Jalingo, Taraba state capital after an interface with delegates of the party. He explained that his chances of winning the presidential ticket are very high. According to him, “my chances of winning the ticket are incredibly high and I am very confident. I am sure I can and I will win it.” When asked if the option of a consensus arrangement sits well with him if his party eventually opts for it, Tinubu said he prefers democracy. In his words, “I want democracy. I am voting for democracy. One man, one vote.” Meantime, the governor of Sokoto State, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal who was also in the state to woo delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ahead of its presidential primary election hinted at agreeing to a consensus arrangement if his party considers the option. He explained that he and three other presidential aspirants under the platform of PDP from the North had earlier tried to work out a consensus arrangement among themselves but failed. He further noted that despite the failed attempt, he would not kick against a Consensus arrangement if his party sees it as the best option to select the presidential flag bearer of the PDP in 2023. He said, “I am sure you are aware that four aspirants from my party including myself came together voluntarily to try a consensus which we were unable to achieve. “I am not averse to anything the party may decide to come up with at the national level, but what I can say is that we have tried consensus in producing our national working committee members and leaders of the party. “The National Chairman himself, Prof. Iyorchia Ayu is also a product of consensus, so it is part of democracy. “If our party decides to attempt it, I will be ready to participate and be part of it.” Tambuwal also told the delegates at the instance of Taraba governor, Darius Ishaku, that he has all it takes to get Nigeria working if voted to fly the PDP’s flag at the presidential election in 2023.

INEC dismisses claim Mahmood Yakubu may join presidential race

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed the claim that Mahmood Yakubu, its chairman, may join the race for president. Owing to the report that Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is nursing a presidential bid and coupled with the growing list of presidential hopefuls, some Nigerians have insinuated that the INEC chairman may soon join the race. But reacting to this insinuation on Sunday, Rotimi Oyekanmi, spokesperson of the INEC chairman, said as a rule, Yakubu remains an umpire in the electoral process of the federation. He said the proposition is absurd, adding that the INEC chairman will not delve into matters at variance with the law, morals and principles. “Our attention has been drawn to innuendos in certain quarters that Nigerians should not be surprised if the INEC chairman joins the presidential race or urging him to do so. It is a preposterous proposition. It will not happen,” he said. “The chairman remains an umpire committed to free, fair and credible elections. “His constitutional responsibilities as the chief electoral commissioner the federation and returning officer for the presidential election are onerous for him to comtemplate straying into extraneous matters at variance with the law, morality and his personal principles. “The chairman will continue to discharge his duties without affection for, or illwill against, any political party or candidate.”

SERAP sues Buhari over pardon for ex-govs Dariye, Nyame

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has filed a lawsuit against the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), asking the court to “declare illegal, and incompatible with the oath of office and public interest, the recent pardon granted to former governors of Plateau State, Senator Joshua Dariye, and Taraba State, Jolly Nyame who are serving jail terms for corruption.” SERAP stated this in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Sunday, signed by its Deputy Director, Mr. Kolawole Oluwadare. The PUNCH had reported that the President approved the pardon of 159 convicts including Mr. Dariye and Mr. Nyame who were recently convicted for various offences. The two men were investigated, prosecuted, and convicted for stealing N1.16 billion and N1.6 billion respectively from their state treasuries, while they were in office between 1999 and 2007. In the suit number FHC/L/CS/825/2022 filed on Friday at the Federal High Court, Lagos, SERAP asked the court to determine “whether the exercise of the power of prerogative of mercy to grant pardon to Mr. Dariye and Mr. Nyame is compatible with the public interest, the oath of office, and constitutional duty to combat corruption.” SERAP asked the court for “a declaration that the exercise of the power of prerogative of mercy to grant pardon to Mr. Dariye and Mr. Nyame is compatible with the public interest, the oath of office, and constitutional duty to combat corruption.” SERAP also asked the court for “an order setting aside the pardon granted to Mr. Dariye and Mr. Nyame in the public interest, and for the sake of the integrity, well-being, and prosperity of Nigeria, and the country’s international obligations.” In the suit, SERAP argued that “If the presidential pardon is not set aside, impunity for corruption will increase, and many influential politicians will continue to escape justice for their alleged crimes.” SERAP also argued that “It is in the interest of justice to set aside the pardon for Mr. Dariye and Mr. Nyame. Presidential pardon for grand corruption cases is incompatible with the rule of law, as it undermines equality before the law.” According to SERAP, the pardon power ought not to be exercised to shield influential politicians and politically exposed persons from justice and accountability. The body also asked the court for “an order directing and mandating President Buhari and future presidents to consider the public interest, the requirements of oath of office, and constitutional duty to combat corruption in any future exercise of the pardon power.” It argued that the presidential pardon power must be exercised in good faith, and line with the provisions of Chapter four of the Nigerian Constitution on fundamental rights. Joined in the suit as defendant is the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN. The suit filed on behalf of SERAP by its lawyers, Kolawole Oluwadare and Opeyemi Owolabi, read in part, “The pardon power if properly exercised, can help to protect citizens against the possible miscarriage of justice.” “Section 15(5) of the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 (as amended) provides that ‘The State shall abolish all corrupt practices and abuse of power.” “Article 26 of the United Nations Convention against Corruption to which Nigeria is a state party requires the government to ensure ‘effective, proportionate and dissuasive sanctions’ including criminal and non-criminal sanctions, in cases of grand corruption. “Article 26 complements the more general requirement of article 30, paragraph one, that sanctions must take into account the gravity of the corruption offences. “The pardon for Mr. Dariye and Mr. Nyame is antithetical to the public interest, the requirements of the Nigerian Constitution, and the country’s international obligations including under the UN Convention against Corruption. “The pardon also constitutes an interference in the exercise of judicial power. Because the pardon appears to be arbitrary, it undermines the authority and independence of the judiciary and access to justice for victims of corruption. “While there is no doubt that Section 175 of the Constitution vests wide discretionary power in the Nigerian president to grant pardon, it does not stipulate the conditions under which such power should be exercised.” “However, when section 15(5) of the Constitution is read together with the oath, it would seem to impose some ethical conditions on the Nigerian president to ensure that the exercise of the discretionary power of prerogative of mercy is not such that it will encourage corruption or impunity of perpetrators.” “The latest Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index shows that Nigeria scored 24 out of 100 points, ranking 154 out of 180 countries surveyed, and falling back five places from the rank of 149 in 2020. This places Nigeria as the second most corrupt country in West Africa.” No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

Why Nigeria Is More Divided Than Ever – Atiku

A former vice president and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, Saturday said Nigeria had been wallowing in disunity because the All Progressives Congress (APC) government had been unfair to all parts of the country. He insisted that even during the civil war era, Nigeria was not as disunited as is being witnessed under the President Muhammadu Buhari government. Atiku spoke in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while addressing PDP delegates ahead of the presidential primary election of his party. He said, “As long as the country is not united, as long as there is no peace, you cannot govern even in your own home, not to talk of a complex country like Nigeria, which is multi-ethnic and multi-religious. He promised to unite Nigeria by giving every part a sense of belonging, tackle insecurity and implement his economic development blueprint towards transforming the country. He also assured that he would not disappoint Nigerians if elected president.

Again, IPOB dismisses alleged killing of Army couple in Imo

THE Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday dismissed the alleged killing of an Army couple allegedly attending their wedding in Imo State, describing not clear, questionable and a smokescreen by the military to invade Imo State in order to kill innocent people. The pro-Biafra group said that it has conducted an investigation and has come to the conclusion that no Igbo family has lost any soldiers in recent time in any part of South East, wondering how the Army came about the alleged killing of the soldier couple. IPOB described the reported killing of the soldier as one lacking many unresolved questions including the name of the place they were killed, the day they were killed and whether they were travelling in a private vehicle and whether they were travelling to and how their killers got the information of their movement statement by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary entitled, “Killing of Army couple is a smokescreen by the military to invade Igbo land”, regretted that the media has not taken time to ask some pertinent questions on the alleged beheading of the soldiers, but only bought the alleged lies from military particularly the Army hook line and sinker, because it was alleged to have happened in Igbo land, but with no particular town in Imo State. IPOB statement read.. “We the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, under our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has come to the knowledge of the military plans to invade Igbo land in the name of looking for the criminals and hoodlums who allegedly murdered the newly-married Army couple in Imo State. Also Read: Igbo ancestors will avenge this wickedness — IPOB denies beheading soldiers “We want the soldiers to be mindful and apply professionalism in their duties because the world is watching them. IPOB is a peaceful movement and is not responsible for the wicked murder of the said couple if it actually happens, even though we know the plan behind the alleged murder of the soldier couple. “We are aware that soldiers are setting up the ground to Invade Igbo Land and massacre innocent people, why? The news about the killing of the soldier couple is not clear to the public. It is questionable. And we still don’t know why people are not asking questions like: how did the killers manage to spot this soldier among many commuters. “Were they in their private car or public vehicle when they were caught and kị́lled by these criminals? Where exactly were they killed or murdered? Why is it that the report didn’t answer these questions? “Why did the report just say on their way to Imo State? Where particularly in Imo State did this heinous crime occur? Were they in uniform or mufty dress? Does it mean that media houses cannot afford to ask these probing questions? “The Nigeria Army must be lying and should stop any further plan to commit genocide in the Eastern region. Enemies of Biafra freedom and IPOB are jumping up and down accusing IPOB without proper investigations. “We are raising this alarm to alert the general public to disregard the accusations against IPOB or ESN operatives about these young officers who were allegedly murdered in cold blood “We want to ask if someone that has been retired from the military wears military uniforms while travelling? We also want to ask why the alleged murdered couple were in the military uniform while travelling for their traditional marriage and why nobody accompanied them and why nobody has come out to say they witnessed the alleged incident and the location it happened. “Can a reasonable soldier still move towards Imo state wearing his or her military uniform with the crimes Army and Ebubeagu militia including recruited hoodlums are committing in Orlu zone now? “How come the killers were too fast to put a call through to the alleged family or friend and post it online immediately? We want to know the point they are trying to prove. IPOB is not responsible for every killing going on in the South Eastern States, but some evil politicians sponsoring cultists, hoodlums and the Nigerian government and its security agencies supported them to carry on and repeatedly link IPOB because they want to demonize agitators. We will soon expose the names of those behind the killings in the South East region. “The real motive behind linking IPOB with this barbarity, that never happened is to use it as an excuse to kill more innocent Biafrans. But God will judge the masterminds. The way and manner of the atrocity were said to have happened looked like the signature tune of FULANI terrorists, known for killing and beheading the people. “This is not the first time soldiers are said to have been beheaded in South East, last year ug was said to have happened in Orsumoughu in Anambra State which later came out to be fake news, now they have come again with similar beheading in Imo State, Enugu, Abia and Ebonyi, will soon take their share of the fake beheading of soldiers very soon. The military should stop this their macabre dance, is not clicking. “No reasonable Igbo or Biafran will make a video of his rape action and beheading of an innocent fellow. It sounds very strange. Those behind the wickedness just want to demonize Igbos, IPOB, yet the real mass murderers in the North kill and main with impunity without the Army rushing to the press. It’s unfortunate many people are not asking the right questions. “We also want to ask how it is possible for IPOB to go after a soldier, kill him or her and make a video, saying they did it on video and mentioning Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s name, when they are aware that same Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is facing charges and will not like killing innocent citizens. “We keep wondering if the people or soldiers who did that video think and also the people who believe the
