NNPP presidential nomination forms not N100m -Kwankwaso

A former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has assured his supporters that the New Nigeria Peoples Party would break records and achieve great fortunes in the 2023 general election. According to him, NNPP is not like the All Progressives Congress that pegged its presidential Expressuon of Interest and Nomination forms at N100 million. Kwankwaso said this on Saturday evening during the first National Executive Committee meeting of the NNPP held in Abuja. He said, “Let me remind Nigerians that our forms are on sale for the states Assembly positions and other positions here in the national secretariat for those who want to contest election. “I want to encourage everybody to be like all of us here; to be people with foresight of men and women in this country. This party is for all nationalists who believe in this country. “We want everybody to go and register in their wards. Forms are very cheap. Certainly not N100 million for presidential candidates and so on and so forth.” Meanwhile, NNPP’s National Chairman, Prof Rufai Alkali, charged the National Working Committee of the party to work assiduously towards emerging victorious in next year’s general elections. He said Nigeria needed to be salvaged from the grips of bad leaders and positioned towards greatness. Alkali said, “You must all know that these responsibilities bestowed on us are a Trust we must all hold dearly and we must work very closely together to fulfil the manifest destiny of our hreat party and the nation. “I need not remind you all that this party has re-bounced back into reckoning and into the Nigeria’s political space at the most decisive and challenging period of our nation’s history. “I say decisive, because Nigerians for too long have been waiting for a political Party to salvage the Nation, to rescue our people from the visionless and directionless political elites that has abandoned the fundamental principles and grown norms of democratic governance. “It appears to us most of the political elites have forgotten the past and do not look at the future beyond their noses. Gradually but systematically our great country Nigeria and the hardworking and innocent citizens of this country are being sacrificed on the altar of personal and selfish interests of a few whose primary objective is only to capture power, raw power, not in the service of the people but for their personal gains. “I also say challenges because the damage inflicted on our country and our people is too deep and too pervasive. Today, there is no part of our national live which has been spared: our farming populations and our tradesmed; members of the business community and the professional; intellectuals and security personnel.”

Airlines Operators Not Backing Down On Decision To Shutdown Services

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) on Sunday said they are not backing down on its decision to suspend operations in response to the astronomic and continuously rising cost of JetA1 despite various interventions in the last 24 hours. In a statement jointly signed by Shehu Wada – Executive Director, Max Air, Dr. Obiora Okonkwo – Chairman, United Nigeria Airlines, Barr. Allen Onyema, Chairman, Air Peace, Capt. Roy Ilegbodu – CEO, Arik Air, Capt. Abdullahi Mahmood – CEO, Aero Contractors, Faisal Abdulmunaf – MD, Azman Air and Mr. Sukh Mann – Deputy CEO, Dana Air insist that they are patriotic citizens and are doing all to protect the flying public and the nation at large. “In the light of frantic developments within the last twenty-four hours since informing the general public of our decision to suspend operations in response to the astronomic and continuously rising cost of JetA1, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) would like to state unequivocally that we stand firmly by our decision. “Airline operators are patriotic citizens and we are doing all we can to protect the flying public contrary to what some subjective schools of thought might suggest. This is a collective sacrifice for the common interest of our nation”, the statement read in parts. Although Ibom Airlines in a statement released on Saturday said it will not join the planned shutdown of flights announced by the Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON), Ibom Airlines said obligations to its customers, suppliers and staff, would not allow it to participate in the shutdown. AON, in its response, however, “regrets the unfortunate position taken by one of our members, Ibom Air, not to stand by the collective decision. While they may have their reasons for doing what they did, it is pertinent to note that they equally accepted in their statement that the JetA1 situation poses an “existential threat to the air transport industry in Nigeria” and that “the out-of-control situation is simply unsustainable. “May we use this medium to clearly state that; “Airlines are not on strike. We are private investors who do not run our airlines with public funds to be able to continue to pay upfront in cash at N700 per litre for JetA1 which has increased our cost on daily basis to about 95%. “This is totally unsustainable. And its consequences, if allowed to stay, will be borne by the passengers; which is what we are trying to prevent”. The Airline Operators called for calm while trying to find a lasting solution to the crisis. “To this end, therefore, we remain resolute in our resolve to find a lasting solution to this crucial problem of national emergency and once again use this medium to appeal to the conscience of our esteemed passengers for their understanding”, the statement added.

Jibrin’s resignation from APC has nothing to do with Tinubu – Campaign official

A member of the Bola Tinubu Campaign Organisation, says the resignation of its Campaign Director General (DG) Alhaji Abdulmumin Jibrin from membership of the APC, has nothing to do with Sen. Bola Tinubu, a presidential aspirant of the party. The Source who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria on grounds of anonymity said the former federal lawmaker’s resignation had nothing to do with Tinubu or Jibrin’s work as DG of the Tinubu Support Group Management Council. Vanguard reports that Jibrin, A Kano state politician, announced his resignation from the APC on his Twitter handle on Saturday. NAN, however, recalls that Jibrin belonged to a faction of the APC in Kano State, led by former governor Ibrahim Shekarau, that lost out at the Supreme Court on Friday to the Gov. Abdulahi Ganduje’s faction. The Supreme Court had dismissed the appeal filed by the G-7 faction of the APC led by Shekarau, challenging the ward and local government congresses conducted by the Ganduje faction of the party. The source, however, told Newsmen that Jibrin’s resignation had to do with local issues in Kano APC. He said: “However, I understand Asíwájú Tinubu is intervening to resolve the matter with the party leadership in Kano.” Jibrin who was silent on his next move, also said on his Twitter handle that he would announce developments in due course.

Petrol queues resurface in Abuja

Queues for petrol have resurfaced in the federal capital territory (FCT) causing anxiety and hardship for residents trying to get the product. It is not clear why the petrol queues are back in the nation’s capital. TheCable observed that between Saturday and Sunday, many petrol stations were closed. The few selling the product had long queues. The development comes weeks after parts of the country witnessed petrol scarcity. In April, the national assembly approved the request of President Muhammadu Buhari to earmark N4 trillion for petrol subsidy. The lower and upper legislative chambers approved the president’s request after they revised the 2022 medium term expenditure framework (MTEF) and fiscal strategy paper (FSP). Speaking at the time, Senate President Ahmad Lawan lamented that the country depends too much on the oil industry, adding that any change in the global economy hits the country hard. “I also think that diversification of our economy is key because we depend so much on oil and gas and the slightest issue that affects the global economy affects us seriously in our country here,” Lawan had said.

Ganduje moves to stop Tinubu campaigner Jibrin’s defection from APC

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has taken steps to stop the defection of Abdulmumin Jibrin, a prominent campaigner for the All Progressives Congress’ presidential aspirant, Bola Tinubu. ASUU ends warning action; may begin indefinite strike

As the second round of the eight-week warning strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, ends on Monday, the union is poised to go on an indefinite industrial action, Vanguard has gathered. Sources said the national leadership of the union would make public its decision on Monday. It was gathered that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the union had earlier given the go-ahead to the national leadership to call out members on indefinite strike if nothing tangible was achieved during the eight weeks of their warning strike. The union had earlier gone on a month warning strike on February 14 this year, and extended it by another eight weeks which comes to an end on Monday, May 9, 2022. While ASUU was into the second round of its warning strike, other staff unions in the university system also embarked on strike. The unions are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Allied Institutions, NASU. Though the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, had met with the leadership of SSANU, NAAT, and NASU, nothing concrete came out of the meetings. He is yet to meet with ASUU leadership, though he announced last weekend that he would meet with them. When contacted, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union had not got an invitation from the government’s team as of the weekend. “We too heard it in the news what the Minister of Labour said about meeting with us, but as we talk, nobody has reached out to us for any meeting. We don’t know when the meeting will be called. However, I think before going to the press to announce any proposed meeting, what ought to have been done is to inform us. Anyway, we are waiting for the meeting when it is called,” he said. Asked what would be the next line of action, Osodeke said the national leadership of the union would decide that. Speaking on the situation, the National President of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, NAPTAN, Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, expressed disgust with the continued closure of the universities. “We cannot continue to waste the time of our children. They are staying much at home than in school now. It is unfortunate that we are yet to get over the issue of the closure of our higher institutions incessantly. That is a minus for the system. How do we expect foreigners to respect our certificates? “Incidentally, it is not everybody that can afford to send their children abroad to study. We must make our education sector work and put an end to this rot. We plead with the government and the university workers to find a mid-course and resolve this issue and let academic activities resume in these institutions, ” he said. In a chat with our correspondent, the National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Comrade Sunday Asefon, said the association would study the situation and react appropriately. “We already have a plan of action in place regarding our demands for the reopening of the universities without further delay and we are keeping faith with that. However, if the strike is extended after the eight weeks of warning action, we will also react appropriately too. “Nigeria students have wasted more than enough time at home doing nothing. With this current situation now, students have wasted time that is enough for them to finish a semester. We are tired of things like this,” he said. Recall that NANS has said it would not allow any political party to hold its presidential convention in Abuja unless the universities are reopened. The All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, among other parties have fixed their conventions for Abuja. ASUU has been on strike since February 14 this year, while non-teaching staff unions have also embarked on industrial action over a month ago. Students from various tertiary institutions have been on street protests in Ibadan, Benin, Abuja and Lagos calling for an end to the strike and for universities to reopen.

Bandits Attack Zamfara Communities, Kill Over 50 Residents

No fewer than 56 people were killed on Friday afternoon as terrorists otherwise known as bandits attacked three villages in Bakura Local Government of Zamfara State. A source who pleaded anonymity said the terrorists atta ked one of the villages, Sabon Garin Damri, around 2:30 p.m. “I was in the main town when the bandits entered Sabon Garin Damri. We suddenly saw people running towards us. Then we started hearing sporadic gunshots. I was miraculously saved”. The source who is a councilor in the area said that the bandits carried out what appears to be coordinated attacks from Sabon Garin Damri, Damri and Kalahe before a joint security team confronted them. Another source, Mu’azu Damri, who is a resident said, “I’ll have to personally applaud them (security agents), though I believe they should have come earlier because if they came at the right time, they would have saved a lot of people. But their arrival helped because the number would have been more than that.” On the number of casualties, he said “We counted 56 people,” the councillor said. “In Damri, only three people were killed; a girl and two other men but the remaining were all killed in Sabon Garin Damri and Kalahe. Some of them were not residents of the two communities. They were people who came from nearby villages to celebrate Eid El Fitr with their relatives”. Even though the state police command is yet to confirm the incident, an officer from the command who spoke to Premium Times said they were aware of the situation. Zamfara, among other states in the north have been experiencing many attacks from bandits, forcing most communities to form vigilantes groups to protect the lives and properties of the Villagers.
