Ebonyi court grants detained Catholic priest bail

A High Court sitting in Ohaukwu, Ebonyi State, on Friday, admitted on bail, the detained Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Timothy Ngwuta. Ngwuta was arrested by police on December 11, 2021, arraigned and imprisoned for alleged promotion of the protracted Effium-Ezza Effium communal clash. The priest, who was detained for twelve days and released on bail as a result of ill health arising from his alleged torture by security agents, was thereafter rearrested on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, and arraigned on March 11, 202, for alleged kidnapping and murder and remanded at the Abakaliki Correctional Centre, up till the time of filing this report. Ngwuta’s detention generated reactions from different quarters, including the Catholic church. The church condemned his detention, saying, he was a prisoner of conscience, even as it alleged that the State Government signed an Executive Order directing the courts in the state not to hear any matter linked to the Effium crisis. However, the State Government through the Attorney-General, Cletus Ofoke, debunked that there was such an Executive Order. On Friday, Rev. Fr. Ngwuta, was eventually admitted on bail by the Court following an application for his bail filed by his lawyers. The matter was, thereafter, adjourned sine die since the Office of the Attorney-General of the State and the Department of Public Prosecution neither filed any information nor opposed the bail application.

Alleged $420,000 ransom: Court orders Evans’s co-defendant to open defence

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Friday dismissed a no-case submission by Victor Aduba, charged along with kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike (alias Evans). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Aduba, an ex-soldier and Evans are charged with kidnapping a businessman, Mr Sylvanus Ahamonu, and collecting a $420,000 ransom from his family. Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo ruled that prosecution established a prima facie case against Aduba, adding that his no-case submission dated Feb. 23 failed. “I have carefully considered the submissions of the prosecution and the defence. “The court, at this stage, is not to review evidence of the prosecution but to see whether the prosecution has enough evidence before the court to warrant the defendant to defend himself. “Evidence of the prosecution shows that it has sufficiently proven a prima facie case against the defendant and the defendant has a case to answer. “I hereby dismiss the application of the defence, and order that the defendant should open his defence,” Taiwo ruled. Defence counsel, Mr Emmanuel Ochai, had argued that prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against the defendant. He, therefore, prayed the court to dismiss the charge against his client. Prosecution counsel, Mr Yusuf Sule, had, however, asked the court to determine whether the evidence adduced sufficiently linked the defendant to the alleged offences. NAN reports that Evans had on Feb. 4 opened his defence and denied kidnapping Ahamonu and collecting $420,000 ransom from his family. NAN also reports that the judge expressed dissatisfaction at the absence of the defendants on March 28 which stalled their the trial. The judge adjourned the case until June 15 for Aduba to open defence. Evans is facing four kidnapping charges at various high courts of Lagos State. Justice Hakeem Oshodi on Feb. 25, sentenced him and two other to life imprisonment for kidnapping Mr Donatius Dunu, the Chief Executive Officer of Maydon Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (NAN)

Political Gladiators malign Gov. Ugwuanyi In Igbo-Eze North Local Government

By Comrade Emeka Jude Omeh It is no longer a secret affair that some power drunk politicians in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area in Enugu State are wrestling power with their supposed leader, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Executive Governor of Enugu State ahead of the forthcoming PDP Primary elections to internally select those who will fly the flag of the State rulling party in different elective positions come 2023. This gang up against Governor Ugwuanyi has been orchestrated by a national Legislator in Igbo-Eze North, who represents Udenu/Igbo-Eze North in Federal House of Representatives, Hon.Engr. Simon Atigwe. Atigwe has been secretly undermining and wrestling power with Gov. Ugwuanyi by Using Hon. Ikechukwu Ogbu known and called “Ogbu Ugo” Deputy Mayor, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area to commit a good number of the delegates in Igbo Eze North to an Oath in the shrine to ensure that they vote for him, Atigwe and against any other aspirants for House of Representatives come 2023. Remember that Hon. Engr. Atigwe is a first term federal lawmaker and he is bent on clinching power by all means in the forthcoming PDP Primary election for House of Representatives. He has bought over the following leaders in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area and they are all bent on ambushing Governor Ugwuanyi during the PDP Primary election on 20th of May, 2023; Rt. Hon. Nze Mike Onyeze, PDP Zonal Chairman in Enugu North, Hon. Alexander Uramah, PDP chairman Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area, HRH Igwe Ogbonna Ekere, Traditional Ruler, Ogrute-Ulo Autonomous community, Hon. Onyekachi Eya, SSA to Governor Ugwuanyi, Nze Chidi Nwa Omeh, SSA to Ugwuanyi, Comrade Uwakwe Ezeja, former Council chairman/ SSA to Governor Ugwuanyi, HRH Igwe Cyril Ayogu of Umuopu Autonomous community etc and this leaders in order to achieve their self aim have gathered and endorsed Hon. Engr Atigwe at the palace of HRH Igwe Wilfred Ogbonna Ekere. It is good to remember that Igwe Wilfred Ogbonna Ekere is a gullible politician/traditional ruler at the same time. He flies to any directions just as flies do when it first perceive the odour of faeces. Poverty and laziness have eaten deep into HRH Igwe Wilfred Ogbonna Ekere and he has resorted to taking bribes from Atigwe and used his palace as an office for unmerited endorsement for second tenure. As this attitude has become so chronic in HRH Igwe Wilfred Ogbonna Ekere, he did the same when Hon. Emeka Ugwunze was the transition chairman of Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area. He was given the position for an interim for Comrade Uwakwe Ezeja to emerge in elective position but when Igwe Wilfred Ogbonna Ekere collected one Million naira bribe, he started convincing Governor Ugwuanyi to endorse Ugwunze for continuity. What a shame? Atigwe in his desperation has held a secret meeting with 36 members of the newly elected ward adhoc delegates at his country home in Aji and assembling job of the delegates was perfected by Hon. Onyekachi Eya. Few days ago, the vultures gathered at the Compound of Atigwe and made their lists of candidates for the forthcoming PDP Primary elections where Hon. Nze Mike Onyeze projected Hon. Tochukwu Mamah from Onicha Enugu Ezike for House of Assembly to represent Ozzi even when all of us know that Hon. Linus Ali from Onicha Enugu-Ezike handed over to Mike Onyeze. Let it also be known that Tochukwu Mamah is related to Onyeze by marriage. On hearing this, I asked myself is this what these people preach? No! They preach ebe asiri anyi jebe bu anyi ga eje but do the contrary in the night or has the white Lion roared already? I ask again; is this the essence of the oath being administered to some gullible delegates? They believe that even if the governor gives a contrary directive against their desired candidate(s), they will still vote against the governor’s wish. My conclusion is that Governor Ugwuanyi should rise up to this occasion before Hon. Engr. Atigwe turns him(Governor) to his mere follower. The clock is ticking and I pray the governor and the leadership of the party to call these stray politicians to order. Infact ,this is desperation taken afar.

2023 Presidency: North can’t be intimidated — ACF

The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has said gone were the days Northerners felt blackmailed and intimidated by threats of restructuring, secession, break up or break down of Nigeria. The forum in a statement issued by the Secretary General, Murtala Aliyu, said the North had never been opposed to the election of any Nigerian as president, neither has it sought to dominate any part of the country. It, however, said the north would not submit itself to be relegated to serfdom. The statement, titled ”Enough of Blackmail, read: ”A long running political riddle that has continued to frustrate all efforts at achieving ‘justice, equity and fair-play’ is this: anything and every thing in which the North has superiority or advantage or strength is, in the opinion of many Southerners, fake or contrived or speculative and, therefore, unacceptable. ”These Southerners contest the facts that the North has 78% of the landmass of Nigeria. They refuse to accept that the North has over 55% of the population of Nigeria. They won’t concede that the voting population in the Northwest region of the North alone is bigger than those of the Southeast & South-south combined. ”They will never acknowledge the fact that all the beef, all the tomatoes, the onions, the beans, etc. consumed in the South, is produced in the North. They concede nothing. ”On the contrary, they say the North brings nothing to the table and is entitled to nothing. Not to an equitable share of national revenues, not to a fair share of employment in the public services or to admissions into public schools. ”If the law says, for example, that election outcomes must be based on one man one vote, they quickly dismiss it as an ‘imposition’ by Northerners. They contest every fact, every principle, including those that formed the basis of our union such as our federation, our system of administration, our7 democracy, etc. ”As we inch towards the 2023 elections, it comes as no surprise that some Southern politicians are giving their Northern counterparts an ultimatum which roughly translates thus: elect no one from the North as President or we will break up the country! ”But what are the facts? Nigeria’s Fourth Democratic Republic is about 22 years old. Of this, Northerners ruled for only ten years. But in-spite of this, some southern politicians are furious, issuing dare warnings against the election of any Northerner as president. ”It has to be stated clearly and for the avoidance of any doubt that the North is not and has never been opposed to the election of any Nigerian from any part of the country as President. Anything that will be done to achieve that, however, must accord with the law and democratic principles. ”Gone are the days Northerners felt blackmailed and intimidated by threats of re-structuring, secession, break up or break down of Nigeria. The North does not seek to dominate any part of the country but will not submit itself to be relegated to serfdom. ”Those issuing ultimatums are to be pitied, knowing that they know not what they are doing. They own no patent nor monopoly of the art or science of ultimatums. Enough of the blackmail.”

Release Nnamdi Kanu, Igbo youths in detention, Ohanaeze tells Buhari

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Thursday, called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to release the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, and all Igbo youths in detention over the agitation for Biafra. Ohanaeze President General, Ambassador George Obiozor, made the call in his opening address at the ongoing Imeobi of Ohanaeze meeting currently holding at the Ohanaeze National Secretariat in Enugu. While expressing optimism that the Igbo nation would come out stronger from the current turmoil, Obiozor said that Ndigbo seeks healing, national unity, and progress on a platform of justice, equity, fairness and a sense of belonging in Nigeria which will start from the release of Igbo youths detained in various cells across the country without trial. Reacting to the current security situation pervading the region, Ohanaeze PG said that each geo-political zone had its own peculiarity. According to him, “The advent of insecurity in the South East is both bizarre and dramatic. The South East had been adjudged the most serene and peaceful zone in Nigeria until April 5, 2021, when gunmen attacked the correctional facility in Owerri, Imo State and freed a total of 1,844 prison inmates. “Since the April 5 episode, insecurity in the South East has attained an unprecedented unbearable crescendo. In condemning the spate of violence in the South East, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide also called attention to the strategic capacity of the local non-state actors to overwhelm a highly fortified correction centre and discharge a total of 1,844 inmates without any arrest.” Commenting on the 2023 general election, Obiozor urged Igbos wherever they reside in Nigeria to make haste to acquire their Permanent Voter Cards. “In this connection, I call on the Association of South East Town Unions, traditional rulers, the leadership of Ndigbo in Diaspora, religious bodies, market associations and all other groups to take this message very seriously. It is a task that must be undertaken,” he stated. South-East leaders at the meeting include Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Sen. Chris Anyanwu, Chief Enwo Igariwey, Sen. Victor Umeh, Prof. Peter Umeadi and Prof Fred Eze among others. A communique is expected at the meeting.

Fidet Okhiria, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), disclosed this in a statement on Thursday In the statement, which Engr. Niyi Ali signed on his behalf, the NRC Managing Director said, “The connection of the AKTS line has been achieved. The terrorists had killed at least nine persons and abducted over 60 of the passengers, including children and elderly persons.

2023 Presidency: I Will Continue To Fight Corruption Like Buhari – Akpabio

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, on Thursday, said he will continue to fight corruption like President Muhammadu Buhari if elected as President in 2023. Although the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is yet to conduct its presidential primary to pick its flagbearer, Akpabio is one of the presidential aspirants under the party. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the minister praised the current administration’s anti-graft war, saying that corruption must be fought so that poverty will not kill the masses. “We must continue the fight against corruption because if we allow it, corruption can kill us. I will continue the same way the President is doing,” he said. “What is he doing that is right in terms of fighting corruption? Corruption has a twin brother – poverty. We cannot fight corruption without fighting poverty.” Akpabio, also a former governor of Akwa Ibom State as well as ex-Senate Minority Leader, identified three major issues affecting the nation. The issues, he stated, are insecurity, national integration, and the economy, vowing to tackle them to ensure Nigeria’s greatness in the comity of nations. On how to achieve that, he recalled how he was able to plunge leakages as well as embark on capital projects during his sway as governor in Akwa Ibom State. “In my state, I was the only governor in Nigeria that was able to do 80 per cent of capital allocation on a yearly basis and 20 per cent recurrent. I plunged the loophole of leakages in the system and that is why you have the outflow of capital projects. “The maydays of what you used to hear some people said uncommon transformation in Akwa Ibom State and Nigerians are not wrong urging me to come out. I am convinced within me that based on the love I have seen this current President show to Nigerians, Nigerians will go higher than where we are.”

2023: I have not endorsed any aspirant- Okowa

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Thursday says he has not endorsed any aspirant for the governorship or any other position for the 2023 general election. The governor who disclosed this during the quarterly media interactions in Asaba, said though, politicians were using his name to campaign but the fact remains that he had not endorsed anyone. According to him, a level playing ground will be provided for all aspirants to contest without hitches. He said that with the three delegates per ward and other statutory delegates, it would be difficult for anyone including himself to hijack the process. On his presidential ambition, Okowa, said that he has not been led to run. “As a politician, “I am calculative, besides, as a member of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the windows for nomination has closed.” He noted that the state government was committed to completing all current and ongoing projects. Okowa said that efforts were on to secure funds to address all the projects to hedge against inflation and continuous review of contracts due to rising costs. He disclosed that the government recently applied for a bridging fund of N150 billion through the state House of Assembly to address issues of funding projects. Okowa said that all projects to be executed and paid for with the funds were clearly itemised, adding that it would address issues of inflation and contract review due to rising cost of materials in the country. According to him, the bridging fund is not a loan, it is a part of the N170 billion owed the state government by the Federal Government due from over deductions for the 13 per cent oil revenue derivations. He said that the Federal Government had agreed to pay the funds in tranches on quarterly remittal starting from this April for a period of five years. “Like other eight states that benefited from the funds, we decided to take a bridging finance to hedge against inflation. “It is only a smart economic sense to get the finance and finish ongoing projects, it is called bridging finance because the money already is owed to us by the Federal Government. “I do not have apologies to people who do not understand and talk ignorantly because we are not taking a fresh loan, we are transparent about it as proceed will be used for settlement of listed ongoing projects and part of pension arrears. “If we do not attend to the projects now, there will be an upward review due to escalation of prices, this is what I really want to avoid,” he said. Okowa, reacting to a statement credited to Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, on his administration spending of over N2 billion on political thugs, he cautioned politicians to always speak the truth. He said that the total amount paid to all his aide was nowhere near one billion Naira adding that politicians must not hide under politics to tell the people what is not true. The governor said that such high ranking politician and others should rather collaborate with government to seek the good of people of the state. “Is Asaba and Okpanam no longer part of Delta North with the massive development done in the area that they alleged there is nothing to show? “People should truly speak the truth and not to obviously lie because of politics,” Okowa said. He said that his administration would not be distracted, adding that it is committed to delivering developmental projects till the last day in office. Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, noted that journalists in the state had been very supportive in propagating the policies and programmes of the state government. Aniagwu urged them to sustain the partnership. Also, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu, expressed appreciation to Okowa for his media friendly disposition. He said that journalists in the state were very happy that the state government had done well in the secretariat of the union in the state.

Yar’Adua was exceptionally courageous, humble—PDP

The main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party, on Thursday, described former President Umaru Yar’Adua as a beloved leader and exceptionally courageous and humble statesman who gave his all and died in the service of his fatherland. In a statement signed late Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP said it “remembers with nostalgia the late President Umaru Yar’Adua (President of Nigeria, 2007-2010) who gave his all and died in the service of his fatherland. “Late President Yar’Adua was a beloved leader and exceptionally courageous, humble, honest, forthright and dependable statesman, whose legacies in stabilising our nation, particularly in instilling the Rule of Law, equity and peaceful co-existence in line with the manifesto of the PDP remain unparalleled. “He was an unrelenting advocate of the Rule of Law, who dignified the Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by promptly executing Orders of Court in line with his Oath of Office, even when such Orders were not favourable to his interest or that of his Party.” It further described the late president as a detribalised Nigerian, an angel of peace who manifestly loved Nigerians without regard to ethnic, religious, class or political considerations and placed the peace, unity and wellbeing of the people above every other interest. In the statement titled ‘PDP extols late President Yar’Adua’s legacies,’ the party added that, “Despite his personal challenges, President Yar’Adua stood firm in the defence of truth, justice, fairness and laid a solid foundation for electoral reforms and credible elections in Nigeria. “His avowed commitment to the unity and peaceful co-existence of our nation is legendry through his Amnesty Programme, which brought relative peace to the then restive Niger Delta region of the country and set the nation on the path of social and economic sustainability. “Indeed, our nation will continue to miss late President Yar’Adua as a leader with a heart for the people as envisioned by our founding fathers. The PDP, in remembering late President Yar’Adua, urges Nigerians to insist on the Rule of Law and credible elections in our country by actively participating in the ongoing electoral process and voting en masse in the 2023 general election to rescue Nigeria from misrule.” The main opposition, therefore, saluted the widow of the late President and the entire Yar’Adua family for their courage and steadfastness in upholding the virtues, values and legacies of the departed President.
