2023: Utomi Calls For Protests, Says Nigeria Has Been ‘Captured’

Prof. Pat Utomi, Wednesday, expressed doubt Nigeria will make progress with its present structure of politics, pointing out that “we are in grave danger“. He urged the people to stage protests similar to the Orange protests carried out in Ukraine where the citizens poured into the streets every day, carrying white and green flags and demanding that their country be given back to them. Utomi gave the advice through a virtual message at the instance of the ongoing Double Diamond Platform Global (DDPG) Leadership Series held in Lagos. He added that right now the Nigerian state has been hijacked, noting that there is “a state capture“. According to him, good leadership should seek to uplift the common man. “That is the starting point of quality leadership and then you want everybody to feel ownership. “When you begin to completely shut down a whole population, whether it is because of religion or ethnicity, you compound the process of trying to deliver. “Good leadership can come from anywhere… The best is the one that mixes up everybody, Muslim, Christian and everybody feel comfortable,” he said. Nigeria needed leaders of competence, compassion and commitment to overcome its challenges. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme was entitled “A Nation in Search of True Leadership”. The DDPG is known for sensitising the public on issues of concern and the current programme is intended to help Nigerians to make informed choices ahead of the 2023 general elections. (NAN)

Three die in Abia community over protest

Three persons died in Ukwa West local government area of Abia State when youths of the area protested the killing of their kinsman by suspected herdsmen’. Sources said residents of the area are living in fear over the possible arrest of innocent citizens by police and other security agencies. Some sources said that the reported killing of a 36-year-old Israel Nwaobilor, a tipper driver, who hails from Umuorie community in Ukwa West LGA sparked the killing of two other persons. Those who died were said to be wheelbarrow petty trader and commercial motorcyclist whose identities were yet to be confirmed. They reportedly died when caught in the web of a protest by youths of Umuorie community which went violent. Nwaobilor was said to have gone to load sharp sand in his tipper to supply one of his clients when he was reportedly abducted by some persons and found dead in the bush some days. A source in Ukwa West that spoke anonymously with our correspondent said: “I learnt the late Isreal Nwaobilor had gone to load sand in his tipper when he was abducted by some gunmen said to be herdsmen. “It was gathered that there was no official report at the police in charge of the area over the missing of Obilor. “His killing which happened on the 18th of June was said to have happened a few weeks after a woman was kidnapped and killed by suspected herdsmen. “According to the report, a search was conducted and his corpse was not found. His body was said to have been found in the bush days later by some persons who later reported the matter to the police. “But before police could get to the scene, the youths had gone to evacuate the body of the deceased from the location. “The youths upon discovery of the body of the young man took his body to the street to protest his killing. “The protest however turned violent as the youths started destroying properties. “The youths were said to have taken the corpse to the residence of the DPO where they tried to force themselves into the compound but when they were resisted. They took to the streets and went violent. “They started attacking any Hausa man and woman that they sighted and when they saw one Hausa man selling things with his wheelbarrow, they pounced on him “They thought the other man was a police officer, not knowing that he was just an innocent commercial motorcyclist. “It was at the point where the police could not handle the situation that they invited soldiers from the 144 Battalion who waded into the matter to stop the youths from causing further damage in the community.” Reports said many residents had left the community though calm is gradually returning to the area. Abia Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Geoffrey Ogbonna said the corpse of Nwaobilor was found in the bush by hunters. “Angry mob went on rampage carrying the corpse of the deceased driver to the Police Station. “After being addressed and dispersed, they mobilised to the major road where they intercepted a herder and a motorcyclist who they eventually vexed their anger on leading to loss of lives. “Corpses of the driver and cyclist were deposited in the morgue while that of the herder was released to his relations on demand for burial.”

Only My Govt Has Implemented A Solution To Herder-Farmer Conflicts – Buhari

President Muhamamdu Buhari has said that his administration is the only in Nigeria’s history to implement a solution to decades-long herder/farmer conflicts, exacerbated by desertification and demographic growth. In a correspondence with Bloomberg, the president asserted that the National Livestock Transformation Plan, putting ranching at its core, is the only way to deplete the competition for resources at the core of the clashes. According to him, governors from some individual states have sought to play politics where ranches have been established; but where they have been disputes have dramatically reduced. Speaking further regarding the war against terror, President Buhari explained that in 2015, Boko Haram held territory the size of Belgium within the borders of Nigeria, adding that today, however, the terrorists are close to extinct as a military force. He urged the same international partners to take additional steps costing them nothing, by proscribing another group – IPOB – as a terrorist organization. “Their leadership enjoys safe haven in the West, broadcasting hate speech into Nigeria from London, spending millions lobbying members of the US Congress, and freely using international financial networks to arm agitators on the ground. “This must stop,” the president declared. As regards corruption, President Buhari assured Nigerians that his government will leave Nigeria in a far better place than they found it. In his opinion, corruption is less hidden, for Nigerians feel empowered to report it without fear and stolen monies are now being returned.

NAFDAC workers embark on strike over non-payment of allowances

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has embarked on strike. Speaking on Wednesday at NAFDAC office in Lagos, Auwalu Yusuf Kiyawa, state chairman of the union, said the strike begins with immediate effect. Kiyawa said the union will not call off the strike until the workers are paid their welfare packages. A source told TheCable that only the Lagos and southern part of the union embarked on the strike. The source said though the entire union agrees on the matter of welfare package, the Abuja and northern axis of the union disagree on the strike as the method to achieving their demands because they believe it is premature. “According to the director of administration, the workers declared a strike action but the union is divided,” the source said. “The Lagos/southern people are the ones currently on strike. Abuja and the northern axis are not on strike. They are not all gathered in one place. The chairman is in Lagos and the vice-chairman is in Abuja. “The Abuja axis believes that the strike is premature and that they will not join. As I speak with you, the staff in Abuja and other northern states are in their offices. They want to give management time. “The management is trying to hold a meeting with them so until after that meeting, they will now decide. If management does not give in to their request, then they can join Lagos people. “The issue is bordering on staff welfare. The Lagos and Abuja chapters are unanimous on the issue but the method of achieving it is what they disagree on, particularly the timing. “The first meeting that was called did not hold because the permanent secretary of health who was supposed to be at that meeting had to attend the federal executive council meeting. They are trying to fix another meeting but the Lagos people refused saying they want to go on strike.” The union had also gone on strike in 2021 over the backlog of unpaid financial claims, poor work environment, lack of staff bus to ease transportation difficulties, and discriminatory payment of COVID-19 palliative.

Show us pipelines we vandalised, IPOB dares Buhari

The Indigenous People of Biafra has described the comments by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), that the group was responsible for pipeline vandalism in the country as “laughable, disgraceful and fallacious”. The secessionist group reminded the President that his Western audience already knew who the pipeline vandals are in Nigeria. In a statement on Wednesday, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said for Buhari to tell the United States and other Western countries that IPOB was responsible for pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta showed he was “shallow-minded” and “uninformed” on the goings-on the country. Powerful added that the President only chose to advertise his ignorance and the failure of his government in credible intelligence gathering by making such “wide” and “untenable” allegations. He challenged Buhari to show the world the locations of the pipelines IPOB vandalised in the country. He said, “Maybe the Fulani-controlled Federal Government of Buhari doesn’t know that the Western nations are not as daft, uninformed, kleptomaniacs and clueless as he thinks, otherwise, he would not have made such embarrassing factless claims. “The President should be reminded that his Western audience already know the actual culprits behind pipeline vandalism in Nigeria and who the beneficiaries are. What a contradiction and confusion in Buhari’s Nigeria! “In case he has forgotten as usual, just last week, his Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps boss threatened to name high-profile Nigerians behind oil theft. Did the NSCDC boss need to issue such a threat assuming IPOB a ‘terror organisation’ according to Buhari’s Nigeria is actually the ones behind the crime?” The statement also added that IPOB, since its formation about 12 years ago has never been involved in pipeline vandalism, except it’s freedom struggle, adding that the President was just being hypocritical in his comments. It added that Buhari looked away while the Fulani herdsmen continued to wreaked havoc by terrorising, massacring Nigerians on a daily basis. It urged world leaders to stop paying attention to the Buhari-led government, adding that the government is living on a borrowed time. “Inviting Buhari to a security meeting in Rwanda is like asking the Hyena to participate in a discussion on the wellbeing of the antelope. Buhari’s government has failed woefully as far as securing the lives and properties of Nigerians is concerned so, therefore, has nothing to offer on security matters and discussions,” it said. The statement read in part, “Going to Bloomberg news and parroting falsehood against IPOB won’t save Buhari and his co-travelers from being prosecuted at the International Criminal Court at the appropriate time. “Buhari should be told that the West understands that his anger with IPOB is simply because IPOB remains the only obstacle to the evil agenda of the Fulani herdsmen trying to overrun Nigeria and declare it an Islamic State. That is why it is only in Nigeria that IPOB, a peaceful movement with a presence in over 100 countries is tagged a terrorist organisation. “Buhari and his kangaroo court delivered a black market judgment against a peaceful movement seeking freedom for their people, without looking into his Fulani kinsmen’s activities of eliminating none Fulani in the country. “Buhari and his wicked cabals refused to declare Fulani terrorists masquerading as herdsmen manhandling, rapping destroying communities and killing innocent citizens of Nigeria. He refused to declare them terrorists, but begging kept on begging the Western world to declare IPOB. “One thing is certain, IPOB will hunt down those terrorists masquerading as herdsmen in Biafran bushes and forests. “Whatever allegations they like let them fabricate. We can’t abdicate our divine mandate of defending our ancestral land against FULANI occupation. “Buhari and his Fulani-controlled Federal Government of Nigeria sponsored insecurity in the Eastern region and blamed it on IPOB thinking that the world is unaware of the activities of Fulani and his military men deployed in our territory. “The world is watching everything happening in Nigeria and IPOB members will stand firm because we won’t allow them to take over our ancestral lands. They have done that between 1967-1970 when they committed genocide against innocent Biafrans because Biafrans wanted to liberate themselves from the bondage Britain put us into by forcing disparate Nations with totally different value systems and cultures together in the contraption called Nigeria.

Buhari nominates Mohammed Shehu as RMAFC chairman

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday urged the Senate to screen and confirm Alhaji Mohammed Shehu for appointment as the Chairman, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). Buhari’s request for the confirmation of Shehu was contained in a letter read at plenary by Senate President, Ahmad Lawan. The letter reads in part: “In accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, I am pleased to forward for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Mohammed Bello Shehu, as the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission. “It is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual expeditious manner.”

Another Politician, Kidnapped, Beheaded In Anambra

The headless body of Hon. Nelson Emeka Achukwu, popularly known as Ogbatuluenyi has been discovered by his relatives less than two weeks after he was kidnapped by gunmen. Achukwu a former member of Anambra State House of Assembly despite being physically challenged was kidnapped from his home in Ukpor, Nnewi South LGA, Anambra State. This is the second of such gruesome murder after the lawmaker representing Aguata North; Governor Soludo’s constituency, at the state house Of Assembly, Okechukwu Okoye was beheaded by his abductors in May, 2022. JOURNALIST101 gathered that the late Anambra politician and businessman was kidnapped on 9th of June, 2022. His decapitated body was later found at the bank of Ulasi river and was quickly buried by the family on Tuesday, 21st June, 2022, because his body has started decomposing. A family source told our correspondent that they couldn’t believe he would be killed after they paid the 15 million naira ransom requested by his abductors. Hon. Bar. Nelson Emeka Achukwu was popular during the administration of Dr. Chris Ngige. The gunmen reportedly abducted and released him a few months ago. Hon. Emeka Achukwu told members of his family that the gunmen accused him of providing information to the military but got released when they found out the allegations levelled against him were false. The reason for his second kidnap and murder is still unknown. He was the owner of Nelly Oil & Gas filling station situated along Onuselogu road, Utuh, Anambra state. When contacted, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the spokesman of Anambra State Police confirmed the sad news and assured that the command is doing everything within its power to arrest the perpetrators of the crime. “The victim was abducted at about 10:15Pm in his house on 9th of June and efforts were been made to rescue him before this unfortunate development. His body was found between the boundary of Uke and Ukpor. “We are still not relenting on our investigation as we will ensure that the culprits will face the full wrath of the law,” Ikenga told our correspondent.

Shehu Sani: Why Buhari Should Have Reappointed Amaechi

Shehu Sani, the senator who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th assembly, has expressed surprise over the recent appointment of ministers by President Muhammadu Buhari. Speaking when he appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Sani said Buhari should have reappointed Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation. “I was surprised to read that names were sent to the national assembly. Having known that he has a record notoriously for delaying appointments and being indecisive on issues.” “If you can recall history, before he appointed the ministers when he took over office in 2015, it took him many months and there was a minister from Kogi state that also died in a road crash, it also took eternity for him to appoint a new one. And then you have cases of replacement of minister of agriculture and that of power. It also takes time for him to reshuffle.” Sani also stated that this is the first time in the history of the country where Ministers will serve double terms in the same position without being reshuffled. “So this is the first time even in the history of this country where you have ministers staying on the same position for long without being reshuffled and those who were sacked without being replaced but I think he has lately recognized that he has very little time left and he took action. It is in fact contrary to what we expected. In fact, I expected him to stay at least up to December to do what he has done but at least, he has done it. “But I thought even that as critical as the ministry of transportation is, actually former minister who has made promises and pledges of completing these rail lines some within this year, some next year, he should have been returned to ensure that all those contracts that have been signed with China and put down and other financiers of our rail project at least he sees them to the end.”

‘Applicant was uncouth’ — Anambra reacts as commissioner calls jobseeker ‘idiot’

The Anambra government says an insulting statement made by Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the commissioner for education, was provoked by an applicant’s “uncouth” language. There were reports over the weekend that there was chaos in Nnewi, one of the venues for the second phase of the teacher recruitment exercise examination, which held on Saturday. A voice recording, which has now gone viral, is said to be that of the commissioner speaking to an applicant for the teaching position on the exercise. “Madam, you’re an idiot. You mean the computers are doing what? I received a report by 12 noon that you people refused to stand in line; you refused to be identified; you mobbed and you were all trying to get into the hall at the same time,” the voice said.   “You refused to be disciplined, up till this moment. And you have the effrontery, you stupid woman, to call me on the phone to talk rubbish. Will you get out of my phone, you filthy thing? “You really want to be a teacher? How will you tell your students to conform to instructions when you cannot stand in line and move into the hall? You came for a test that will make you a teacher and you’re behaving like hooligans.” Speaking on the development in a statement, Christian Aburime, the governor’s spokesperson, said Udeh’s remarks were provoked by the language of the said applicant.   “While the applicants at the Nsugbe Center sat for and ended their own examination at about 4:00 pm, those at the Unizik Center ended theirs by 3:30 pm, with some candidates joining them from the IDK learning Center, Awka,” the statement reads. “Nnewi candidates did not commence their examination at the appropriate time owing to all manner of inappropriate conduct exhibited by some of the applicants. Not withstanding, they were eventually allowed to write the examination late in the evening. “In respect to the video making the rounds on the social media space, members of the public need to be aware that it was an edited excerpt from a private phone conversation by an applicant who obviously failed the examination and out of frustration resorted to cursing and abusing the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, and the Commissioner for Education. “The Commissioner’s comments were as a result of the uncouth language used by the applicant against the person of the Governor of Anambra State and other unprintable words hurled at the Commissioner. “As public officers operating in the public space, the Commissioner has apologised for her inappropriate choice of words used in the said voice note. “However, it is pertinent to reiterate that Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo remains committed to the well being of Ndi Anambra and will not be distracted in availing deserving qualified teachers the opportunity to serve Anambra State and contribute in shaping the future of our children.”
