Bitcoin Plunges Below $20,000

Bitcoin plunged below $20,000 on Saturday, shedding nine percent from the previous day to fall to $18,740, its lowest level since December 13, 2020. With investors increasingly wary of risk, the world’s most popular crypto asset has lost more than 72 percent of its value since reaching a high of $68,991 on November 10, 2021. After sinking to $18,740 on Saturday, Bitcoin rose to $18,941 at 1550 GMT, down eight percent from Friday. Other major digital currencies were also down on Saturday, including ether, which lost nearly 10 percent of its value. World stock markets plunged this week amid fears that inflation-fighting interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve and other central banks could trigger a recession. Cryptocurrencies have paid the biggest price. The value of the global crypto market fell below the symbolic $1 trillion mark on Monday after reaching $3 trillion in November of last year. Bitcoin’s fall has been accelerated by the suspension of withdrawals by two cryptocurrency platforms. The Celsius Network said it was pausing “all withdrawals, swap, and transfers between accounts” due to “extreme market conditions.” Babel Finance said it was facing “unusual liquidity pressures.” Major exchange Binance temporarily suspended bitcoin withdrawals and advised customers to use other networks. Coinbase said Monday that it was trimming 18 percent of its workforce, about 1,100 jobs, citing tight economic conditions and overly rapid expansion. “We appear to be entering a recession after a 10+ year economic boom,” Coinbase founder and CEO Brian Armstrong said. In recent years, the crypto sector benefited from a vast infusion of cash due to easy-money policies from the world’s biggest central banks. However, rampant inflation has sparked tighter monetary policy across the globe, helping to send the industry crashing. AFP

No decision yet on voter registration extension – INEC

With 11 days to the end of the continuous voter registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, the commission has said it is yet to decide on the growing request for extension. There has been a clamour for an extension of the exercise, which began in June 2021 and is scheduled to end on June 30, 2022. Ahead of the 2023 elections, the exercise has witnessed a surge in the number of registrants in recent weeks, prompting the calls for an extension. The online registration ended on May 30, 2022. The House of Representatives on Wednesday asked the commission to extend the CVR by 60 days, while several civil society organisations and individuals also called for an extension to the exercise to enable more Nigerians to register. Earlier, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project and 185 concerned Nigerians filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Lagos asking the court for, among other things, an order of mandamus to direct and compel INEC to extend voter registration by a minimum of three months and take effective measures to ensure that eligible Nigerians are able to register to exercise their right to vote in the 2023 general elections. INEC, in a notice on its website, said the deadline for the registration was to enable the commission to clean up the registration data, print the permanent voter cards and compile the register ahead of the 2023 general elections. Speaking on the request, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, stated that the commission was yet to decide on the issue. He told our correspondent in an interview on Friday, “INEC does not have any position yet. As of today, the deadline for the CVR remains June 30, which is less than 13 days away. The commission will decide what to do next when we get to the bridge.” The INEC chairman said in June that as of June 1, about 10.2 million fresh registration had been recorded since the exercise started. In many parts of the country and in social media, there has been a renewed drive and persuasion by individuals for people, especially the youths, to register and collect their PVCs. There are indications that at the end of the exercise, the number of registered voters nationwide might increase from the 84 million in 2019 to over 100 million by 2023. The Executive Director, YIAGA Africa, Samson Itodo, said recently during INEC’s first Twitter Spaces, that the efforts by youths to register was fascinating but that they should go beyond registering to ensure they collect their PVCs and vote. PVC collection Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osun State says it has extended the collection of Permanent Voter Cards in the state ahead of the governorship election on July 16. In a statement by the commission’s Public Affairs Officer, Mrs Oluwaseun Osimosu on Saturday, INEC said the decision was aimed at easing the collection of PVCs by those that had yet to collect the items. “INEC wishes to inform the public, most especially all eligible voters who have yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards that they can collect their PVCs at the registration areas (wards) from June 22 to June 26.

The War In Ukraine Could Last ‘For Years’ – NATO Chief

The war in Ukraine could last “for years”, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned in an interview published Sunday by German daily newspaper Bild, while reiterating calls for Western countries to provide long-term support to Kyiv. “We must be prepared for this to last for years,” the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization said. “We must not weaken in our support of Ukraine, even if the costs are high — not only in terms of military support but also because of rising energy and food prices.” He told Bild that the food and fuel costs are nothing compared to the one paid daily by Ukrainians on the frontline, warning “we would have to pay an even greater price” if Russian President Vladimir Putin were to achieve Moscow’s goals in Ukraine. The NATO chief has in the past week ramped up calls for alliance members to back Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s invasion. Repeating his calls for NATO member nations to continue delivering weapons to Kyiv, Stoltenberg said the hardware support could increase “the likelihood of Ukraine being able to push Putin’s troops out of the Donbas region”. The easternmost Donbas region of Ukraine is currently partly under the control of Russian forces. Ukrainian defence minister Oleksiy Reznikov and other officials this week met with around 50 countries of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group at NATO headquarters to ask for a surge in weapons and ammunition. BREAKING: Mbaka Shuts Down Adoration Indefinitely

Reverend Father Ejike Camillus Mbaka has announced the shutting down of activities at his Adoration Ministry Indefinitely. The action isn’t unconnected to the backlash that followed his (Mbaka’s) criticism of the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi. He said Obi is too stingy and that he can never win the presidency of Nigeria because a generous old man is better than a young wicked person. After the sermon last week Wednesday, the Diocese quickly disowned Mbaka stating that he doesn’t speak for the Catholic Church. Mbaka on Friday, apologised to the supporters of Peter Obi and blessed the former Anambra Governor. The Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Nigeria added that he never intended to malign Obi or any person. After his apology, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Ekiti Election: SERAP Urges INEC To Prosecute Vote-Buyers

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prosecute all those involved in vote-buying in the course of the Ekiti State governorship election. SERAP in a short tweet on Saturday said the prosecution must not end with those caught in the act, but must be extended to the politicians who fund their election malpractice. BREAKING: #EkitiDecides2022: We’re suing to compel INEC to prosecute anyone suspected to be responsible for vote buying and electoral bribery in Ekiti State and the politicians who sent them. — SERAP (@SERAPNigeria) June 18, 2022 The group’s reaction trails news of vote-buyers being arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Parading some of the suspects at the Oke Ori Omi Area Division of the Nigerian Police Force, the authorities said the individuals were caught with monies allegedly used to induce voters, an act the EFCC officials say were carried out surreptitiously. While the polls were relatively peaceful, observers say they witnessed massive vote buying and selling. One of such groups that testified to this was the Campaign for Equal Voting Access for Persons with Disabilities (EVAPWD), a program of the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD). According to the body, its observers witnessed massive vote buying and selling, particularly in “Polling Unit (PU) 001, Ward 10, Irepodun/Ifelodun LGA, PU 002, Ward 10, Odo-Oye / Ayedun 1, Gbonyi LGA, and PU 039, Ward 11, Ado-Ekiti LGA”. In a communique signed by its chairman, David O. Anyaele, the group however, noted that it is impressed to observe that marginalized populations – the aged, nursing mothers and pregnant women and persons with disabilities were offered priority voting in most of the polling units observed.

Ekiti Election: Incidences Of Vote-Buying Not Synonymous Only With APC – Keyamo

Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, has said that reports of voting-buying in the ongoing governorship election in Ekiti State is not solely synonymous to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Keyamo’s statement comes on the heels of reports suggesting that the APC was involved in mass vote buying and selling in the ongoing Ekiti polls. In his statement on Twitter, the minister said the claims are only subtle messages passed across by opposition parties, all in a bid to see that the ruling party loses the election. “Incidences of vote-buying can’t be synonymous only with the ruling party, but the subtle message the other parties try to pass to the gullible is that only the ruling party engages in illegalities & that the only way an election can be deemed credible is if the ruling party loses,” Keyamo lamented.   The election in Ekiti State has been adjudged peaceful by many, however, there have been pockets of violence and several reports of “money for votes” practices. Agents of the ruling APC were reportedly arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for alleged vote-buying. Parading some of the suspects at the Oke Ori Omi Area Division of the Nigerian Police Force, the suspects were said to have been caught with monies allegedly used to induce voters, an act the EFCC officials say were carried out surreptitiously. The EFCC thereafter proceeded to burst another residence where some persons were caught with a book containing details of voters of certain voting area.
