ICYMI: Enugu Diocese bans Catholics from attending Mbaka’s Adoration Ministry

The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Bishop Calistus Onaga, has banned Catholic faithful from attending Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka’s Adoration Ministry henceforth. This is coming following Mbaka’s recent vituperation against the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi. Mbaka had during his mid-week prayer activities declared that Peter Obi, “a stingy man”, could not be Nigeria’s president. He also said that he was “cursed.” Shortly after, the Catholic Diocese of Enugu disassociated from the utterances, noting that Mbaka’s attack on Obi breached Canon 220 of 1983 Code of the Canon Law that prohibited anyone from illegitimately harming the good name of a person. In a letter Bishop Onaga personally signed, which was addressed to ‘All the Clery, Religious and Lay Faithful in the Catholic Diocese of Enugu’, he banned them from having anything to do with the Adoration Ministry. He said in the letter that Mbaka, having refused to heed to the Church’s persistent directives, “and in fulfillment of my pastoral duties as the Chief Shepherd, I hereby prohibit all Catholics (clergy, religious and lay faithful) henceforth from attending all religious and liturgical activities of the Catholic Adoration Ministry until the due canonical process initiated by the Diocese is concluded.” While noting that his decision was based on the fact that Mbaka’s teaching and utterances were not consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church, he enjoined “all Christian faithful to keep praying for Fr. Mbaka.” The letter banning Catholics going to Adoration Ministry reads, “To All the Clergy, Religious and Lay Faithful in the Catholic Diocese of Enugu “Dear Msgri, Frs., Bros. and Srs.. Dear People of God, PASTORAL INJUNCTION ON ATTENDANCE TO CATHOLIC ADORATION MINISTRY CHAPLAINCY ENUGU “In the light of the happenings in the Catholic Adoration Ministry Chaplaincy Enugu; capable of undermining the Catholic faith and teachings; and after several fraternal corrections and admonitions to Fr. Camillus Ejike Mbaka, the Chaplain of the Ministry; and after having given him pastoral directives and guidelines for the Ministry Chaplaincy, which he persistently violated; “and in fulfilment of my pastoral duties as the Chief Shepherd with the obligation to promote and safeguard the Catholic faith and morals in Enugu Diocese, I hereby prohibit all Catholics (clergy, religious and lay faithful) henceforth from attending all religious and liturgical activities of the Catholic Adoration Ministry until the due canonical process initiated by the Diocese is concluded. “My decision is based on the fact that some of the teachings and utterances of Fr. Camillus Ejike Mbaka at the Catholic Adoration Ministry are not consistent with the teachings and faith of the Catholic Church. “I enjoin all the Christian Faithful to keep praying for Fr. Mbaka and the Catholic Diocese of Enugu as I entrust him and the Diocese to the maternal care and protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Apostles.”

Imo Killings: RULAAC wants EBUBEAGU security outfit Investigated

….Laments alleged rape, extortion, extrajudicial killings The Rule Of Law And Accountability  Advocacy Center (RULAAC), is seriously concerned about the rampant incidence of invasion and siege on communities in Orlu and environs and other communities in Imo state by a group of rampaging armed men said to be members of ‘EbebeAgu Security Outfit’ allegedly set up by the Governor of Imo State ostensibly to combat unknown gunmen. They operate in a convoy of vehicles provided by the state governor. According to RULAAC executive director, Okechukwu Nwangunma, there are videos of several incidents depicting acts of savagery by these bloodthirsty armed men who mainly target young people. They carry out random arrests and invasive bodily checks on the young men for body marks and tattoos. Ones they see any mark on any young man, he’s automatically labeled IPOB and taken away and may never be seen again alive. The Police Act 2020 prohibits profiling and arrest of persons based only on their looks, hairstyle or bodily marks. HARVESTING OF VICTIMS” BODY PARTS There have been unverified but widespread reports of harvesting of body parts of some of the victims and burning of their remains beyond recognition. Some are allegedly brutalised and asked to transfer money in exchange for not being killed. Young women are allegedly seized, taken to bush paths or inside their vehicles and gang-raped and asked to thank God that they were not killed. In some cases, these Ebubeagu operatives are said to carry out joint operations with Police, Civil Defence, Military and DSS operatives. Some people arrested during such joint operations have been traced to the Tiger Base office of the IRT in Owerri Imo State. Torture, killing and extortion have been reported. Young men are arrested at random, taken into custody, tortured and disappeared. In few cases, lucky ones are extorted of huge sums of money and released. This siege has forced young people – mainly teenagers and youth – to flee their communities leaving only old women and men and children. In a recent video that was shared with RULAAC from different sources, a family in Okporo Orlu was on 16th Of June, 2022, allegedly invaded by so called Ebubeagu Security outfit in search of youth in the village and they ended up shooting everybody in sight in the compound including the elderly men, leaving several of them in the pool of their blood. Why would somebody shoot elderly people in the name of security? Our preliminary findings reveal that a lot of militant elements without training were handed guns to go after the ‘unknown gunmen’. Their only qualifications may have been the fact that they have been shooting in the underworld. Else, nothing justifies or even rationalises the terror being unleashed on the civilian population in Orlu by men who are not by law authorised to bear assault rifles! The unknown gunmen seem to have gone underground, now they are feasting on soft targets – assaulting, intimidating, extorting and making a bad situation worse! Their activities have become too egregious and inhuman to condone, and the outrage too loud to ignore. We are therefore concerned that despite the outcry by members of the affected communities, security agencies in the state appear helpless while the governor who set up this outfit and to whom alone they report stands aloof as a whole youth population in Orlu and environs are being decimated. Whatever may be the explanation for this siege cannot be in interest of public safety and security. APPEAL TO BUHARI RULAAC calls on President Muhammadu Buhari in his capacity as the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and as the ultimate Constitutional authority in control of security in Nigeria to intervene decisively in aid of these communities affected by insecurity.

Peter Obi Submits Name Of Running Mate To INEC

The Labour Party has submitted the name of Doyin Okupe as Peter Obi’s running mate. It was learnt that Okupe’s name was submitted as part of the plan to beat the Friday June 17 deadline given by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to political parties. Mr Okupe told Peoples Gazette on Friday evening that Mr Obi picked him because he found him worthy to serve. “Yes, I am the vice-presidential candidate of our party because I was found worthy by the candidate and the party to serve,” he said. Okupe, who is the Director-General of Peter obi Campaign will be the place holder and would later be changed after the party stakeholders must have agreed on the suitable vice presidential candidate for the 2023 elections. Recall that the party had said its Vice President will come from the North Barr. Julius Abure, Labour Party Chairman, had said although the decision lies with Peter Obi, ”the party’s choice of a Vice President will most likely come from the Northern region.”

Tinubu: I’ve Submitted Name Of My Running Mate To INEC

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Presidential Candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), says he has submitted the name of his running mate for the 2023 Presidential election to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Tinubu stated this in a statement issued on Friday. Presidential election to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Tinubu stated this in a statement issued on Friday. Although the APC Presidential Candidate did not disclose the name of his running mate, he said he had submitted “duly completed nomination forms to INEC”. The forms are incomplete without the name of the running mate of a presidential candidate. Daily Trust had reported how Tinubu picked Alhaji Kabir Ibrahim Masari, a Katsina politician, as a placeholder for his running mate so as to meet up with INEC deadline. Masari, a former National Welfare Secretary of the APC during the era of the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole- led NWC, was nominated pending the conclusion of the consultation on the issue of running of mate by various APC groups. Sources in the camps of Tinubu and around Masari told this paper that he was nominated as “a dummy running mate.” One of them said, “He was picked as a dummy pending the resolution of some issues on the running mate.” It was further gathered that Masari would withdraw from the race in line with section 31 of the electoral act. “An agreement has been reached to this effect,” another source said. In the statement his media office issued on his behalf on Friday, Tinubu said, “As stipulated by the electoral law and Independent National Electoral Commission guidelines and timetable, the standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress, HE Asíwájú Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has returned his duly completed nomination nomination forms to INEC. The forms were returned on Wednesday June 15, two days ahead of schedule. “We wish to reiterate that HE Asíwájú Tinubu stands ready to contest the February 25, 2023 presidential election to deliver progressive good governance to our people.”

PIX: BRIPIN ENARUSAI Profile of Ifeanyichukwu Arthur Okowa, PDP Vice Presidential Candidate Atiku Abubakar named Ifeanyi Okowa, the Delta State governor, as his running mate on Thursday in Abuja. ByFestus Owete June 16, 2022 4 min read Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, on Thursday, emerged as the vice-presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, announced Mr Okowa as his choice for the slot at the party’s headquarters in Abuja. He was chosen over other contenders, including Governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State. “I am pleased, therefore, to announce here my choice of Running Mate who will help to lead us to victory next year not only in the Presidential election but also in the governorship and legislative elections. And he will be by my side as I work hard every day to provide our people with security, revive our economy, improve education and unite our country. He has both Legislative and Executive experiences. “Please join me in welcoming to the ticket the next Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa,” Mr Abubakar said. Education Born on July 8, 1959, in Owa-Alero, Ika East Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr Okowa attended Edo College, Benin City between 1970 and 1976. He got the second-best result in the Higher School Certificate Examination in the then Bendel State in 1976. He later proceeded to the University of Ibadan where he obtained an MBBS in Medicine and Surgery, graduating in 1981 at the age of 22. After his youth service the following year, Mr Okowa worked briefly as a medical officer with the Bendel State Hospital Management Board. He was later to go into private practice when he established the Victory Medical Centre at Igbanke, a border town between Delta and Edo states. Entry into Politics Mr Okowa delved into politics when he served as the Secretary of Ika Local Government Area in 1991 and by 1993, he became the Chairman of the Council. Following the restoration of democracy in the country in 1999, Mr Okowa joined the PDP, which formed the government in Delta State headed by James Ibori. He was first appointed the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources from 1999 to 2001 and was redeployed to the Ministry of Water Resources where he was until 2003 when he was reassigned to the Ministry of Health. After serving in the three ministries as commissioner, Mr Okowa resigned to run for governor but failed in the primary election. He was subsequently named Secretary to the Delta State Government in 2007 under the administration of former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, Mr Ibori’s cousin who won the election. In 2011, Mr Okowa showed interest in the senatorial election. He won the primary but his election was challenged by some leaders of the party, who preferred Marian Ali, wife of the former National Chairman of the PDP, Ahmadu Ali. In a rerun, Mr Okowa polled 1,446 votes against 108 votes secured by Mrs Ali. That year, he was elected into the Senate to represent the Delta North Senatorial District after securing 98,140 votes ahead of Ned Nwoko of the DPP, who incidentally recently won the PDP primaries to represent the district. At the Senate, Mr Okowa headed the Committee on Health and also belonged to other committees. In 2015, Mr Okowa ran for the governorship seat of Delta and won on the platform of the PDP despite opposition from the outgoing governor, Mr Uduaghan, who preferred another aspirant, an Urhobo, the largest ethnic group in the state. At the time, the Delta North senatorial district, otherwise referred to as the Igbo-speaking area of the state, was favoured to produce the governor, going by the unwritten agreement for rotation of power among the three senatorial districts. Mr Ibori had taken the slot of the Delta Central (the Urhobos) and Mr Uduaghan, an Itsekiri, had taken the slot of Delta South comprising the Itsekiris, Isokos and Ijaws. Although Mr Ibori was serving a jail term for corruption in London at the time, he allegedly rooted for Mr Okowa against a fellow Urhobo, in keeping with the agreement. Mr Okowa’s victory at the primary was also made possible by the votes of the Ijaws who supported him in the belief that after his tenure, the governorship seat would go to them in their quest for rotation among ethnic groups instead of senatorial basis. Mr Okowa subsequently won the governorship election with 925,274 votes, beating his closest rival, Great Ogboru of the APC, who polled 215,938 votes. With his election, Mr Okowa became the first Anioma (Igbo-speaking) man to be the state governor. He also became the fourth democratically elected governor of the state after Felix Ibru (1991-1992), Mr Ibori (1991-2007), Mr Udughan (2007-2015). He was re-elected in 2015. Supremacy battle with godfather James Ibori Only recently, Mr Okowa was engaged in a battle of supremacy with his godfather, Mr Ibori, over who would succeed him (Okowa). While Mr Ibori favoured his former Commissioner and former Private Secretary to late President Umaru Yar’Adua, David Edebvie, Mr Okowa favoured Sheriff Oborevwori, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly. Both Messrs Edebvie and Oborevwori are Urhobo. Mr Oborevwori went on to beat Mr Edebvie at the PDP primary election. Analysts say Mr Okowa, by going against Mr Ibori’s choice, is poised to build his own political structure independent of the former governor. It is often said that Mr Okowa is determined to avoid the fate of Mr Uduaghan, who appears not to have his own structure and has not won any election since he left power in 2015. If anything, with Mr Oborevwori’s

ASUU Strike Unnecessary, Says JAMB Registrar

Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, on Friday described the ongoing strike action by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as unnecessary. Oloyede noted this when he presented multi-billion naira medical equipment to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) for improved health care services in Nigeria. The programme was in collaboration with a United States based agency, Project Cure. According to him, incessant strikes in the nation’s tertiary institution was capable of causing irreparable damage on the students and the nation. He said, “While acknowledging that the primary responsibility of reasonable (even if not adequate) funding of public health and education institutions lies on the proprietors, the government, I call on the employers, university-based labour unions to appreciate the irreparable damage of incessant strikes on not just the students but the country at large.” He said the intervention of JAMB in the area of health care delivery was to support government’s efforts to addressing the huge medical infrastructural gap. JAMB, he noted, would continue to prune down its expenses to free up resources to support the tertiary health and educational institutions in the country. Others health facilities that also benefited from the intervention were University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Yusuf Maitama Sule University Teaching Hospital, Kano, and nine others from across the six geopolitical zones in the country. “If the people, who had paid the N100m to buy nomination and expression of interest for the presidential election had done that for the nation’s health interventions, many people would have been praying for them. I don’t know who would be praying for them now,” Oloyede added.

Buhari Begins Fresh Plans In Revised Policy To Eliminate Use Of Kerosene

President Muhammadu Buhari has stated fresh plans in a revised policy to eliminate the use of kerosene in the country by 2030, as part of Nigeria’s commitment for a safer and healthier global climate. The president made this known today during a virtual meeting hosted by the US President, Joe Biden on Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate Change (MEF).   President Buhari listed the country’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to include increase in the use of bus rapid transit as a means of transportation for the general public, 50 per cent reduction in the fraction of crop residues burnt by 2030 and implementation of forest programmes. The presidentPresident noted that the NDC is a contribution to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, submitted to replace the interim contribution of May 27, 2021. The Federal Government had in 2012 commenced a new policy draft known as the National strategic policy for LPG in collaboration with stakeholders in the petroleum industry, to phase out kerosene and firewood usage in the country and adopt the cooking gas as an alternative, however, 10 years after, that policy is yet to crystallize.

Lawan overcomes ‘Machina hurdle’ to make APC list of senatorial candidates

Ahmad Lawan, president of the senate, has been listed as the candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Yobe north senatorial district for the 2023 elections. The development comes hours after Bashir Machina, who won the APC primary for the district, insisted that he would not step down for the senate president. Lawan had contested the APC presidential ticket, and hours before the primary commenced, he was announced by Abdullahi Adamu, APC national chairman, as the consensus candidate of the party. However, the consensus decision was rejected by several party stakeholders — including members of the national working committee (NWC) — and Bola Tinubu, former Lagos governor, went on to win the party’s ticket at the primary which was concluded on June 8. Speaking on Wednesday in an interview with Channels Television, Machina had insisted that he will not withdraw from the senatorial race since he got the votes of delegates in an unopposed election. “I’m sure he did not plan to go back to the national assembly. That is why he contested for the presidency and lost. This is democracy. The space is free. A certain period of time was given for people to want to contest. Timetables were set, guidelines were produced by the parties, and eventually elections were held,” Machina had said. But according to the signed list of candidates seen by TheCable on Friday, Lawan is listed as the party’s candidate for Yobe north. Neither the senate president nor Machina is yet to react to the development.
