Bandits abduct 40 Zamfara traders, 20 escape

Gunmen have abducted about 40 traders who were travelling to Zamfara from Sokoto at the weekend. Journalists gathered that most of the traders were those selling phone at the Bebeji Plaza in Zamfara. Over 60 of the traders were travelling when the gunmen struck, but more than 20 managed to escape. Chairman of the market said the traders were abducted when they were returning from a wedding in Sokoto. He said the traders traveled in a Coaster Bus with 40 seat capacity and in another bus that was carrying 18 passengers. He told the BBC Hausa Service that they were abducted on Saturday evening in-between Tureta and Bakura town after leaving the wedding venue at Tambuwal in Sokoto State. Spokesman of the Zamfara Police Command, SP Muhammed Shehu confirmed the abduction, saying his men in collaboration with other security agencies have commenced investigation to ascertain the number of those in captivity.

More Nigerians’ll fall into extreme poverty, World Bank predicts

The World Bank has predicted that more people in Nigeria and its Sub-Saharan neighbours are expected to fall into extreme poverty. According to a report obtained via a World Bank newsletter on Friday, titled, “Global Economic Prospects,” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its effect on the commodity market, supply chains, inflation, and financial conditions have intensified the slowdown in economic growth. The Washington-based bank further explained that the possibility of high global inflation could eventually result in tightened monetary policy in advanced countries which might lead to financial stress on emerging markets and developing economies. The report also quoted the World Bank President, David Malpass, as saying that the world was facing the deepest global recession since World War II. He said, “The global economy is facing high inflation and slow growth at the same time. Even if a global recession is averted, the pain of stagflation could persist for several years- unless major supply increases are set in motion.” The report added that growth in Sub -Saharan Africa is projected to slow to 3.7 per cent this year reflecting forecast downgrades of over 60 per cent of regional economies. Price pressures, partly induced by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, are sharply reducing food affordability and real incomes across the regions. It read in part, “More people in SSA are expected to fall into extreme poverty, especially in countries reliant on imports of food, and fuel. Fiscal space is narrowing further as the government ramps up spending on subsidies, support to farmers, and in some countries, security. However, the impact of the war will vary across countries, as elevated commodity prices will help soften the damaging effects of high inflation in some large commodity exporters”. Among the risks to the forecast, prolonged disruptions to food supply across the region could significantly increase poverty, hunger, and malnutrition, while persistent inflation could ignite stagflation risks and further limit policy space to support recoveries. An elevated cost of living could increase the risk of social unrest, especially in low-income countries. On how the global economic situation could worsen the poverty level in Nigeria, an Associate Professor of Economics at Pan Atlantic University, Dr Olalekan Aworinde, said the Russia-Ukraine war would reduce the disposable income of Nigerians, which would, in turn, affect the standard of living. Aworinde said, “Ukraine is one of the largest producers of wheat in the world and the Russian war invasion will affect the demand and supply of wheat and once the major producers of this agricultural material cannot export the goods, that implies that demand is greater than supply and that will result in a hike in price. Once prices increase, knowing fully well the disposable income of the consumer is constant it means the purchasing power will fall. And if the purchasing power falls, it will affect the standard of living and once it affects the standard of living it means these individuals will go into absolute poverty.” Aworinde added that in terms of the structure of the Nigerian economy as a “monocultural economy, meaning that we only produce oil and we cannot eat oil. “So Nigeria is mainly an import-dependent country and that means when you are bringing in the goods and it’s expensive imported inflation and the implication is that general prices of goods will increase leading to a continuous inflation.”

Nigerians Must Trust The Military For Insecurity To End – CDS Irabor

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, on Sunday said citizens must trust the military and other security agencies for the war on insecurity to be more effective. He made the comment while speaking on a Channels Television special program for Democracy Day. “It is for us to have an understanding that we can’t withhold information and expect miracles to happen,” he said. “Certainly it’s not going to happen.   “I’m a victim as well as any Nigerian that is on the street. We are all victims together. There’s no one who is on the other side. We are in it together. We are on the frontlines. Trust is not something we need to beg for. “I will seek and crave the indulgence of all Nigerians to say that there has to be trust. Trust must exist and trust must be given in all respect, so that together we will achieve the state of peace that we so desire.” The General noted that “a lot of improvement” has been recorded in securing the country in the past one year. However, he admitted that the desired state of security is yet to be achieved. Parts of the country continue to be subjected to repeated acts of violent crimes, including kidnapping and gunmen massacres. On June 5, gunmen attacked St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, killing more than 30 people. The CDS regretted the violent incidents but argued that security agencies have averted several others. He said in the same week of the Owo attack, security agencies had halted what could have been a major attack in Kano and Abuja. “We recovered a large quantum of arms and ammunition and other materials which, of course, the criminals were intending to use in various parts of the country, including Abuja,” he said. “That the Owo incident happened does not imply that improvements have not happened.” “Peace is a process,” he said. “It is not an end-state. We are working to get to a stage where we get to zero-incidents.”

Don’t approve Muslim-Muslim ticket, CAN warns APC, PDP, others

The National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Dr Samson Ayokunle, on Sunday in Abuja, warned the All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party, and other political parties to resist the temptation to fly a Muslim-Muslim ticket in next year’s election. This is as he warned that such a step would be disastrous for the nation. The PUNCH reports that the All Progressives Congress and its candidate, Bola Tinubu, might settle for a Muslim-Muslim ticket, given the party’s difficulty in finding a Christian from the North, who would boost the party’s chances in the election. A top source in the party told one of our correspondents on Saturday that even though consultation was still ongoing, the idea of picking either Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State or the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, who are both northern Christians, was no longer topical due to their limited clout in the region. The source noted that North-West and North-East had the bloc votes in the region and that if the party could not find a stronger Christian from the two sub-regions, it might settle for a Muslim. The CAN President who was represented by the Founder of Sword of The Spirit Ministries International, Bishop Francis Wale-Oke, said this at the interdenominational church service to mark the 2022 Democracy which was held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja. Speaking on the theme ‘More than Conquerors,’ Ayokunle noted that any party that wishes to produce the next president must not undermine the Christian community. He said, “While I congratulate the candidates, I must sound this warning, please do not fly a Muslim-Muslim ticket. It would not fly. It will not stand. Rather, it would set the nation against each other. “The candidate who will emerge is the one who works with the Church. Please, do not alienate the church. “If you embrace equity, fairness and justice, the Nigerian electorate will reward you with their votes at the polls and they will give you their support.” Reiterating his counsel on equity and fairness, the CAN President said the country cannot claim to practice justice when a certain region is deprived of producing a president. He urged candidates to exalt righteousness in their campaigns saying, “You can only rule when there is a nation. In your campaigns, make sure you exalt fairness, justice and equity. If there is no righteousness, fairness and equity, we will remain divided. “There is no fairness if a certain people from a certain ethnic group are reduced to second class citizens who cannot aspire to the highest office in the land. “We pray for an end to killing people in their place of worship. We pray for a nation that is united and where justice, fairness and equity reigns. God bless you all and God bless Nigeria.” In attendance is the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, who is representing the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; Representative of the Senate President and Speaker House of Representatives, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Deputy Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives; Minister of Women Affairs and former Senatorial Aspirant of the APC, Paulen Tallen; President of the Court of Appeal represented by Justice H.S Samani, Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan, Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of the Federal Capital Territory, Water Resources, Police Affairs, Civil Service Commission. Others include the Chief of Defense Staff, General Lucky Irabor, Representatives of the Chief of Air Staff, Major General A.B Omozoje, Representative of the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral J.B Basan, Inspector General of Police, DIG Johnson Kokumo, Chief of Defense Intelligence, Major General SA Adebayo, heads of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Nigeria Immigration Service, National Security and Civil Defense Corps, Nigeria Customs Service, and clergy men and women, including the Chaplain of the Aso Rock Chapel, Seyi Malomo. Also in attendance were Ambassadors of Jamaica, Burundi, Venezuela, Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Angola, Botswana and Country Director of the World Health Organisation, Dr. Walter Mulombo.

APC ticket: My zero vote shows intolerance of certain kinds of politics, says Bakare

Tunde Bakare, the serving overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, says his zero vote at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary shows his resistance to “certain kinds of politics”. Bakare, who had contested the APC ticket, also participated in primary which took place from June 6 to 8. During the primary, while seven candidates had stepped down for Bola Tinubu, former Lagos governor, and one candidate withdrew for Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Bakare said he would not step down for anybody as he was confident of his ability. However, Tinubu polled 1,271 votes and was declared the winner of the primary, while Bakare, as well as other presidential aspirants such as Rochas Okorocha, Ikeobasi Mokelu and Tein Jack-Rich, had zero votes. Addressing his congregation on Sunday, Bakare said he would confidently wear his zero votes as a badge of zero tolerance for a certain kind of politics. He, however, congratulated Tinubu on his victory and wished him well. “As a presidential aspirant in this special convention of the All Progressives Congress, it has been a great honour to be the standard-bearer of the message of a new Nigeria and Nigeria that was for every Nigeria,” he said.   “Thank you to my supporters across the nation and indeed it is an honour. Thank you for your support. “Despite the challenges leading up to the primaries, our heads remain unbowed because we did not compromise on the values that are integral to building a new Nigeria for us. The meaning has always been as important as this. This is why we confidently wear our zero votes as a badge of zero tolerance for certain kinds of politics. “I congratulate the winner of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his victory. His emergence as a flagbearer and presidential candidate of the APC is a testament to his significant contributions to the cause of the south-west, as well as his labour towards the formation and establishment of the APC. “As I have said in times past, I, therefore, extend best wishes to him as he proceeds on the campaign trail towards the 2023 general election.” He, however, called on Nigerians to plan strategic roles in transforming the country. “I remain audaciously confident that a new Nigeria is possible and that upon the foundation values of integrity and incorruptibility, Nigeria will no doubt become a cutting-edge nation in my lifetime — a nation that will one day be the peace, progress, prosperity, and possibilities capital of the world,” he added. “This fight may have appeared to be a setback, but there is still a course and a nation to transform. This is not the work of just one man or woman or just one party, but all Nigerians worthy of the name.”

ASUU Strike: FG team fails to meet deadline to resolve issue

The Prof. Nimi Briggs-led committee set up the Federal Government to renegotiate the 2009 Agreement signed by the government with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and put an end to the ongoing industrial action by the union has failed to meet the three-month time frame given it by the FG to conclude its assignment. The committee, which was inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, on March 7 this year, was given three months to conclude its assignment. It was gathered that Adamu gave the committee the go ahead to continue its negotiation with the union since there seemed to be some progress even though nothing concrete was agreed to within the time limit Therefore, the committee is expected to continue the negotiation with the union later this week after the public holiday. When contacted, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, confirmed that his union would still meet with the committee later in the week. “We have been meeting and we are still going to meet later in the week after the public holiday. We are always available for meetings and negotiations. If the committee was given a time frame within which to work, that is not an issue that should bother us,” he said. Asked whether any progress has been made so far in the course of their meetings, Osodeke replied in the affirmative, but added that in due course whatever they arrive at would be made public. Also speaking in a phone chat with our correspodent, Briggs explained that the outcome of the renegotiation would be made public at the appropriate time. Recall that Adamu inaugurated the committee to find a lasting solution to the incessant strike by ASUU and other staff unions in the university sector following the inability of the government to implement some aspects of the 2009 Agreement signed by the two parties. The government is blaming the paucity of funds for the inability to implement some aspects of the deal, while the union is accusing the government of not getting its priorities right. The Briggs Committee also has as members the Pro-Chancellor, Federal University, Wukari, Lawrence Ngbale (representing North East); Pro-Chancellor, Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Prof. Funmi Togunu-Bickersteth (South West) and Pro-Chancellor, Federal University, Lokoja, Sen, Chris Adighije (South East). The Pro-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Olu Obafemi (represents North Central); Pro-Chancellor, Kano State University of Science and Technology, Prof. Zubairu Iliyasu (North West); and Pro-Chancellor, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Matthew Seiyefa (South South). ASUU has been on strike since February 14 this year over the adoption of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, IPPIS, as the payment system in the university sector, poor funding of the sector, non-payment of salaries and allowances of some members, the inability of the government to also pay Earned Academic Allowance, proliferation of universities among others.

I’ll not relinquish my senatorial ticket to Akpabio – Ex-DIG

The All Progressives Congress candidate for Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District in the 2023 general election, and Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Udom Ekpoudom (retd.), has vowed that he will not relinquish the APC senatorial district ticket which he won on May 27, 2022 to Senator Godswill Akpabio or anyone, no matter the pressure on him. The State Chairman of the party, Mr. Stephen Ntuekpo, while citing security infractions in the May 27 primary in the district, claimed he was directed to conduct a fresh primary by the national headquarters of the party on June 8, 2022. The said primary produced the former Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Akpabio as the winner, having scored a total of 478 votes out of 512 accredited delegates. But a statement on Sunday by Ekpoudum’s campaign Director-General, Hon. Uwem Udoma; Secretary, Obong Etokakpan, and the campaign’s Director of Media and Publicity, Peter Idiong, described the June 8, 2022 midnight primary that produced senator Godswill as “scam, unconstitutional, deceitful and legally defective.” The statement assured the APC members in the Senatorial district that he will “under no circumstance, relinquish, withdraw or be substituted no matter the degree of pressure and inducement dangled by anyone.” According to the statement, the mandate freely and expressly given to him to fly the APC ticket for next year’s senatorial election is not a commodity for buying and selling. “The 2023 DIG Udom Ekpoudom Senatorial Campaign Organisation has observed an absurd, ridiculous and highly provocative conspiracy with respect to the APC Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District Senate primary election, validly won by Udom Ekpoudom. We vehemently wish to reiterate and state as follows; “That DIG Udom Ekpoudom, the Standard Bearer is a very disciplined, cultured and law-abiding citizen with the national toga of Officer of Niger, hence, he has high regard for extant laws of any establishment. “Recall that Ekpoudom duly participated in the Akwa Ibom North-West APC Senatorial District Primary Election held on Friday, May 27, 2022, in line with the 2023 Election Timetable and guideline of our party. “Succinctly, the primary election was properly monitored by INEC as constitutionally required and Udom Ekpoudom was victorious and declared the winner and the party’s flagbearer. “Sequel to the aforementioned, we want to state categorically and without any ambiguity, that at no time did our party, the APC put our candidate on notice of any cancellation of the primary election or that of conducting another senatorial primary for the Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial seat,” the statement read in part. The campaign organisation vowed that the mandate given to Udom Ekpoudom to contest next year’s senatorial election remained sacrosanct which would be judiciously guarded and protected. “The purported “scam election” held on Thursday, June 8, 2022, at the Skills Acquisition Centre in Ikot Ekpene, is nothing but illegal, deceitful, unconstitutional, and legally defective,” the statement further said.

Ebonyi ‘ll never be Biafra, Umahi insists

Apparently displeased by the poor solidarity he got from delegates and leaders of the South East region towards his campaign to ensure that an All Progressives Congress, APC aspirant within the region emerges as his party’s flag bearer during the last APC presidential primary election, Governor David Umahi, weekend, insisted that Ebonyi would never be part of Biafra, not minding the activities of various agitators in the South East geopolitical zone of the country. Umahi further expressed regrets at the conduct of delegates from other South East states who allegedly sold their votes to willing buyers, instead of standing in defense for the call for the Igbo Presidency. The Governor who stated this while addressing a mammoth crowd that received him in Ebonyi, after the Party’s residential primary election, explained that the Ebonyi person was not regarded as should, within the South East. “Prof. Obiozor could not stand for Igbo when it mattered so much, it is a very big shame, I have no confidence in him and he is no longer my President. In the comity of South East, Ebonyi people are not regarded, I continue to say that Ebonyi will never be Biafra. “I weep for our Leaders, we are now regarded as people that will sell anything for the sake of money, it is about equity, justice, and fairness upon which I continue to shout for the unity of this country.” Umahi added that he was dissatisfied with the political actors from South East Zone, for not justifying the agitations against the marginalization of Ndigbo. He particularly accused the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Professor George Obiozor for toeing the path of politics, instead of making himself a rallying point during the struggle for the Igbo Presidency over the weekend. He commended the delegates from Ebonyi State for their loyalty and commitment towards to the struggle for Igbo Presidency and liberation of Ndigbo from the stronghold of marginalization. “First, let me say to Ebonyi people, you are wonderful people, the Presidential election was a great eye-opener to every son and daughter of Ebonyi State and with your support, we fought very gallantly. “I had a series of meetings with the party’s chairmen in the five states of the zone in the company of its national vice chairman. I implored on the delegates that the issue was not about me but the mood of the Igbos in the nation. “I implored that they should vote for any south east aspirant so that when the votes are counted, we would not be missing. We would have made a strong statement in the process that the Igbos are eminently qualified with due capacity to lead the country. “There was no sort of lobbying I did not receive but I maintained that it was about bringing the marginalisation of the Igbos to the fore. “The setting of the Nation is well skilled against any contest for Igbo man, while every Zones have about eight States or more and South East has only five, how do you expect an Igbo man to win a contest under this kind of arrangement. “I am the Governor of Ebonyi State, the only agenda I have for South East now is Ebonyi Agenda, I continue to say that he who sells his brother, even the buyer will not trust him. “Anyone that fights against the interest of Ebonyi people in the South East, I will fight the person Publicly, Ndigbo, get your PVC and bond together, you have seen that nobody wants you anymore, we have the fighting spirit and the spirit of our founding Fathers have been rekindled to fight for us. “When Honourable people are needed in South East, they will come to Ebonyi State, everything is not money.”

Gunmen have abducted three pastors along the Ochadamu-Okele- Ejule road on Friday in Ofu Local Government of the state, demanding the sum of N80m for their freedom. Daily Trust learnt that one of the abducted clerics is Pastor Sunday Emmanuel Abbah from Olamaboro Local Government, but resides in Lokoja. The three pastors were said to be on their way from Lokoja to minister at a 3-day crusade programme at a community in the eastern district of Kogi State when the assailants flagged down their car around Ochadamu-Okele-Ejule settlements and carried them to the bush.
