REPORT: Atiku’s running mate: PDP raises panel as Wike, Okowa lobby for VP slot

The All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday stepped up moves to choose running mates for their presidential candidates. The PDP set up a committee comprising its governors, the National Working Committee and the Board of Trustees members as well as former governors with the mandate of picking its vice-presidential candidate. The committee met on Wednesday and Thursday in Abuja. The PDP spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, confirmed the setting up of the committee to The PUNCH last night. It was gathered that the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and his Delta State counterpart, Ifeanyi Okowa, had intensified lobby of the PDP stakeholders as part of moves to clinch the post. On his part, the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, began the search for his running mate with a meeting with northern governors. As Tinubu met northern governors, the Independent National Electoral Commission on Thursday gave parties June 17 deadline to submit the names of their presidential candidates and running mates. The commission had on May 27 extended the deadline for parties to conduct primaries from June 4 to June 9. It also fixed June 17 as the deadline for parties to submit lists of their candidates. At the PDP primary held on May 29, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who emerged as the presidential candidate, polled 371 votes while his closest challenger, Wike, came second with 237 votes. On Wednesday, Tinubu defeated aspirants including a former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and the Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo. The PUNCH had on Thursday reported that Atiku met with the PDP governors as part of efforts to pick his running mate. Ologunagba in the interview with The PUNCH, indicated that the PDP would announce its vice-presidential candidate next week. He, however, declined to reveal the names of those being considered as the running mate. He said, “Yes, we have set up a committee on the running mate; when it comes out with its decision, it would be announced. We don’t do things by speculations. There is a process, we don’t work without planning. We would follow due process, we consult, that’s what we are doing. “When we are done with consultations, you would hear the outcome. Whether they met today (Thursday), whether they didn’t meet, that’s not relevant. When they have done their work, you would know the outcome.” When asked about the names of the committee members, Ologunagba stated, “You don’t need the names. All the organs of our party are represented: the National Working Committee, the Governors Forum, the Board of Trustees, and the Former Governors Forum are all represented. All the organs of the party and relevant stakeholders are involved in the consultations.” On the efforts to reconcile the aspirants who lost during the primaries, the party said a reconciliation process was ongoing. Wike It was gathered that Wike and Okowa had reached out to their fellow governors as part of efforts to clinch the post. It is not out of place if he is pushing to become the running mate of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. “But it will be unfair if he (Wike) is not picked as Atiku’s running mate going by his contributions to the party, both in terms of finance and other levels of support. “Don’t forget that he came second in the PDP presidential primary in Abuja, so that tells you his pedigree,” he stated. Kelvin Ebiri, the Special Assistant on Media to Wike kept mum over the choice of running mate for Atiku. He is not only eminently qualified but acceptable by all. If there is an election, all governors, even those in the APC, will attest that Okowa is the best man for the position. He has worked hard for it.” A source close to the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, told The PUNCH that the governor believed the party should pick somebody who could mobilise votes for the party. Kajuru Attack: Kaduna Govt Debunks Reports Of Helicopter Shooting, Releases Victims Names

The Kaduna State Government has described as untrue, several reports suggesting that the bandits attack in Kajuru was carried out by terrorists who used a helicopter to shoot at their victims. While the government mourned the gruesome killing and burning of houses in the attacked locations, the Commissioner for Internal Security, Samuel Aruwan, said it was an Air Force helicopter (under Operation Whirl Punch) that was dispatched to the area. According to him, the soldiers scanned the first two locations of the attack which are Dogon Noma and Ungwan Sarki, it was at these villages that the operatives sighted burnt houses and properties on fire. Deaths recorded from the two locations were about 31, and while the gunmen moved to wreak the same havoc on Ungwan Maikori, they were intercepted by the NAF helicopter. The formidable fight put up by the security operatives deterred the bandits from further attacks on the citizens in the village, after the gunmen had already killed one local and burnt several houses. “The story that a helicopter provided air support to the bandits against the locals, is therefore an untrue account,” Mr Aruwan stressed. He said the Kaduna State government having gone through all the facts, finds it regrettable that a section of media would circulate an unverified report, insensitive to its implications on national security, law and order. The commissioner invited eyewitnesses to the peddled report of a helicopter aiding bandits in the killing of innocent citizens to present their accounts to the government backed by incontrovertible facts. He further stated that the military, police and other agencies working in the general area deserve commendation and motivation, rather than demoralizing allegations. “In the last 72 hours, security forces have conducted vigorous operations in the same general area, and are on the trail of a wounded notable terrorist. “Similarly, several kidnapped victims, including an expatriate kidnapped at a mining site, were rescued after a fierce engagement with bandits,” the Home Affairs Commissioner explained. Aruwan said since the attack on Sunday, security agencies and traditional leaders in the locations have been updating the government on the development. He further stated that as of today, 32 persons have been confirmed dead following the attack. The deceased are listed as follows: DOGON NOMA – Ahmadu Musa – Audu Dandaura – Akilu Laya – David Wasika – Hajatu Buhari – Nashon Buhari – Iliya Yaki – Javan Mairabo – Jackson Adamu – Nasco Victor – Dutse Gwamna – Joshua Amadi – Gona Isah – Douglas Yakubu – Phineas Joel – Tanimu Umaru – Abody Iliya – Wanzami Halidu – Dogo Aweh – Sunday Shittu – Rejoice Audu – Jedidiah Ayawa – Jinkai Pius – Rebecca Ayafa – Ishaya John – Audu Danladi – Jibo Sule – Yakubu Garba – Williams Danbaba UNGWAN SARKI – Maikasa Kufana – Augustine Bahago UNGWAN MAIKORI – Mamiya Maikori Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i, on receiving reports of the attack, expressed deep sadness and prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls. The governor also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

Nigeria bleeding, soaked in blood ― Catholic Bishops

President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, has raised the alarm that Nigeria is bleeding and soaked in blood. Ugorji made the lamentation Thursday in Owerri while speaking at the golden jubilee celebration of the Apostolic Administrator of Owerri Archdiocese, Most Rev. Anthony J. V. Obinna. His words: “Nigeria is bleeding. Our land is soaked in blood. From North to South, East to West, blood is flowing like a river. Nigerians now live in fear and anxiety, as a dark cloud of uncertainty hangs over the nation. “Nowhere is secure. Our homes, our highways, our institutions of learning and even our sacred precincts of worship centres, are all unsafe. Why has our country become so insecure, while we have a government charged with the responsibility of defending the lives and property of one and all? “Why has life become so cheap and short in Nigeria? Why must people who slaughter unarmed and law-abiding citizens in our communities be allowed to go scot-free? “As we celebrate here today (yesterday), my heart returns to the bloody scene at St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, where many unarmed worshippers, including couples, women, little children and infants, were gruesomely murdered and many others brutally wounded on Pentecost Sunday. “We continue to pray for the happy repose of the dead, the speedy recovery of the injured and the consolation of the bereaved. The killing of innocent worshippers is outrageous, sacrilegious, condemnable and totally unacceptable.” In the cleric’s considered opinion: “It has become obvious that our country is under siege by Fulani militia, masquerading as herdsmen. A few weeks ago, it was the heartless killing of Deborah and the callous attack of churches in Sokoto.   “Recently, it was the kidnapping of the Prelate of the Methodist Church, Nigeria, who later disclosed that he and his two co-travellers, were abducted by armed Fulanis, with the active connivance of the military. And last Sunday, the story was the bloody attack of the Church in Owo.” Looking forward to the 2023 general elections, Archbishop Ugorji said: “We have watched with dismay, the recent cash-and-carry primaries in different political parties, primaries characterized by greed, graft, manipulation and exclusion. “To say the least, what took place in some of those primaries, were disheartening and disgraceful. Given that genuine leadership is selfless service, involving enormous sacrifice, people who try to bribe their way to power, must have ulterior and questionable motives. “We must stand together to say no to money politics, terrorism, kidnapping and corruption in our country. One effective way of doing so, is through exercising our franchise during general elections, by trooping out to vote. “We must, therefore, shun apathy and indifference and stand together to elect only credible candidates with character, competence and capacity; candidates with proven records of achievements and who are known for putting the common good above their private and selfish interests.” He, therefore, urged Nigerians to ensure that they have their permanent voters card, in preparation for next year’s general elections, which he said, “is very crucial for the survival of this nation.” Speaking also, Imo State Deputy Governor, Professor Placid Njoku, said that what is unique about Archbishop Obinna is that he is one man you cannot miss in a crowd. His words: “He speaks truth to power and he has done this religiously and ceaselessly. Imo people, especially those in the corridors of power know that the fear of Archbishop Anthony J. V. Obinna, is the beginning of wisdom. He knows how to load meaning to words.” Responding, Archbishop Obinna commended everyone that helped in making the celebration a huge success. He said: “If there is anything you heard that I said or did, it was by the special grace of God. I am aware that I may not have satisfied the expectations of everyone, but please, keep praying for me.”
