APC governors at liberty to pick Tinubu’s running mate, says campaign spokesman

Bola Tinubu campaign organisation says the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), a body of governors elected on the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) platform, is at liberty to pick a running mate for the party’s presidential candidate. Tinubu beat Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, to pick the APC presidential ticket on Wednesday. Before the convention, the governors agreed that power should go to the south. Speaking with The Punch, Bayo Onanuga, spokesman of the campaign organisation, said Tinubu’s running mate can come from any geo-political zone or religion. “The vice-president can come from any region and religion. But the PGF is at liberty to pick. Up till now, we are all aware that Atiku has not chosen a VP,” Onanuga said. “Yet, he was elected before him. But in our own case, it is a party affair. “The party leaders will look at the chances and decide how they will balance a Muslim from the south, maybe with somebody that comes from north-east, north-central or from north-west. That is how it is done. I cannot circumvent the party. “The Governor Atiku Bagudu-led PGF has the task to pick a competent deputy for him. Already, he has a cordial relationship with virtually all of them. You will also have to understand that he has just picked the presidential ticket. “I am also sure that this issue of picking the right candidate for VP will be in the minds of the party leadership and the APC governors too. “At this moment, we just want to pause and take a rest from the stress of the just-concluded campaign.”

Jihadists kill 23 in northeast Nigeria

Jihadists have killed at least 23 men in Nigeria’s northeast Borno state in the latest violence to hit the conflict-ridden region, militia sources said Thursday. Fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) seized the men on Tuesday as they searched for scrap metal as part of a 50-strong group in the Magdala village in the Dikwa district, they said. The incident was reported only on Thursday because telecom towers destroyed by jihadists have slowed communication in the area. “For now 23 bodies have been recovered and they were all slaughtered by the terrorists,” militia leader Babakura Kolo told AFP. “Three people made it back to Dikwa while the fate of the remaining 24 is still unknown,” he said. There were fears that the missing men had been taken hostage by the militants, said another militiaman Ibrahim Liman. He said search teams were combing the bushes as the missing men “could have been shot dead while trying to flee”. The Nigerian military has recently intensified ground and air attacks against ISWAP and rival Boko Haram and said it had killed several high-profile commanders. This week’s killings could have been revenge, as the jihadists accuse metal scavengers of passing information on their positions to the military, the militiamen said. Last month, 30 metal scavengers in Mudu village in the same district were killed by jihadists. ISWAP split from mainstream Boko Haram in 2016. The two groups have increasingly been targeting civilians, particularly loggers, farmers and herders, accusing them of spying on them for the military and the local militias fighting them. The jihadist violence has killed over 40,000 people and displaced around two million from their homes in the northeast since 2009, according to the UN. Most of the displaced live in camps and rely on food rations from aid agencies, which forces many of them to fell trees for firewood and scavenge for metal scraps, which they then sell to buy food. Local authorities have been returning the displaced back to their homes despite concerns about their safety by aid agencies. The violence had spread to neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, leading to the formation of a regional military coalition to fight the insurgents.

In a congratulatory message on Thursday, Yakasai said history will be made if Tinubu emerges as the president of the country. The elder statesman said Tinubu’s emergence as president would signify “the total break away” from military influence in Nigeria’s polity. He said, “The election of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the APC Presidential Bearer is indeed an important political development in our country. This transition will lead us to a full-fledged democracy, a milestone of an acclaimed figure and political juggernaut of the APC National Leader to a National Leader of Nigeria. “When Asiwaju, a sage, is eventually elected as the President of the country in the forthcoming Presidential Elections, history shall be made in our contemporary political development for a number of reasons. “Paramount and if elected as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju’s election victory will signify the complete and total break away from military influence in our polity which will bring about the return of the country to a full pledge democratic tradition and practice for the first time since the return of civilian rule in 1999. “It will also constitute a stamp of validation of the 1914 amalgamation of the people of Northern and Southern protectorates by the entire people of Nigeria of their own free will. “It is gratifying to note that this is the first time the major Political Parties are fielding non-military actors as their Presidential standard-bearers. “Therefore it is important to appeal to all candidates vying for various political positions in the country to commit themselves to the principles of playing politics according to the rule of the game, eschew politics of bitterness, violence and do away with the culture of thuggery in our political activism and return the country to the path of civility in the conduct of partisan politics. “May their emergence be the harbinger of the return to politics of decorum, without bitterness as well as the beginning of the arduous task of finding a better strategy that will enhance the needed national unity, peaceful coexistence and cohesion in our country a prerequisite for genuine nation-building. “I pray that the coming general elections will be conducted in a peaceful atmosphere free from violence. Brutality: Journalist Floors Police, GTB At Appeal Court

The Appeal Court in Abuja on Tuesday affirmed the judgment of High Court of Federal Capital Territory in a fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed against the Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) and the Nigerian Police Force by Abuja based journalist and publisher of FreshNEWS Online Media, Desmond Utomwen. Utomwen, a former staff of TheNEWS Magazine, had dragged the Bank and the Police to court over his molestation at the Area 3, Garki Abuja branch of GTB on 11th December, 2009. The journalist had gone to the bank to cover a protest by some Nigerians over allegations that officials of GTBank were involved in fraudulent withdrawals of large amounts via the bank’s Automated Teller Machines (ATM). However, policemen attached to the bank and bank officials had descended on him, beat him till he became unconscious and then seized his identity card, N2,000, camera, and digital recorder. The journalist was subsequently detained at the Garki Police Station for several hours during which he was denied access to medical treatment. The reporter consequently filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit in court. In a landmark judgment delivered on 12 October, 2012, Justice Peter Kekemeke of FCT High Court declared that the actions of the GTB and the Police was a violation of the reporter’s right to freedom from inhuman and degrading treatment, right to own moveable and immoveable property. The Judge held that by their action, the respondents violated the right to freedom of the press and expression as enshrined in sections 34, 39, and 44 of the constitution. Justice Kekemeke also ordered the Bank and the Police to pay the sum of N100 million as damages for their wrongful act and to immediately return all the items seized from the journalist. But the Police and GTB Bank had appealed the judgment. Delivering judgment in the appeal on Tuesday, Justice Godswill Amadi of Court of Appeal, Abuja affirmed the verdict of the lower court. He said the appellants did not state anything in the appeal to dispute the facts on which the lower court based its judgment. He however reduced the monetary compensation from N100 million to N20 million. “Honestly, the lower court did a great job in evaluation of the evidence and arrived at correct findings and conclusion on the breach of the fundamental human rights of the first respondent (Desmond Utomwen) by the Police at the behest and active instigation of the appellant.” The Justice stated. Utomwen’s lawyer Ugochukwu Ezekiel told journalists that the ruling is another strong warning to law enforcement agencies to desist from violating the human rights of Nigerians. Ugochukwu however said he may appeal the reduction of the N100 million awarded to the journalist by the FCT High Court to N20 by the Appeal Court. Also, Utomwen, who is a co-founder of Centre Against Brutality And For Safety Of Journalists In Africa (CABSOJA) said the judgment of the Court of Appeal is another affirmation of the rights of journalists to do their work without being molested. In the judgement, the Appellate Court held that the right to protest is an inalienable right of the citizen and a newsworthy event deserving coverage by journalists. The Justice added that from the entirety of the evidence, it was clear that the Police, upon invitation and active instigation by agents of GTBank unlawfully arrested, brutalized, and illegally detained Utomwen and forcefully seized his working tools as well as forcefully quelled a peacefully protest with brute force, thereby infringing on the rights of both the peaceful protesters and the innocent journalist from performing his civil and professional duties. The Justice who maintained that there was no justification in law for the brutalization, restriction, and seizure of the working tools of Desmond Utomwen also held that the Police and agents of GTBank had acted in in breach of personal liberty, freedom of speech, human dignity and freedom of press in the crass and debasing manner they ill-treated and brutalized the journalist in contravention of section 39 of the Constitution. “I therefore without any hesitation dereplicate the action of the Nigerian Police in willingly lending themselves to use by the GTBank to suppress a peaceful lawful protest for the sole purpose of turning it into riot to enable them descend on innocent protesters and journalist carrying out their legitimate duties of informing the public.” “I enjoin the Police to refrain from such unwarranted actions against the civil rights of the citizens of this country by attempting to criminalize every form of civil life of people of this country. This country it must be stated belong to all the citizens including all the leaders, the led and all the security agencies- Police, DSS, EFCC and others. The attitude of security agencies in beating and disregarding the rights of the generality of the citizens as being adversary to the leaders and security agents, both maintained by tax payers monies must be disregarded from now.” “The standard of care expected from the Police in the discharge of its duties is an objective one as permitted by law. It is not a subjective one. It must not be left to their whims and caprices. The Justice concluded.”

Doguwa spoke on Wednesday in an interview on Channels Television. Earlier, Tinubu, former Lagos governor, won the APC primary after he polled 1,271 votes to defeat 13 other presidential hopefuls. This is someone who has brought a lot of intelligent people to bear in the system and we have seen how it has manifested. “I think what is going to happen to Nigeria is like a miracle.
