Ondo attack: We’re prepared to defend ourselves – Ooni

  The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has condemned the heinous attack on worshipers at the St. Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa, Owo, Ondo State. The attack, which was carried out during Sunday Mass, left over 35 people dead and many injured. A viral video posted online showed some of the slain worshippers in their pool of blood. In a statement shared via his Instagram page on Monday, the monarch stated in strong terms that despite the peace-loving nature of the Yoruba people, they are capable and ready to defend themselves against “external invaders.” Oba Adeyeye also condemned the terrorist attack and called on South-West governors to fulfill their oaths of ensuring the safety of lives of their citizens. The statement read in part, “What occurred yesterday was a gruesome massacre dastardly targeted at turning Yorubaland into a war zone. However, we the descendants of Oduduwa, although peace-loving, cannot be overrun in our own homes, do not be mistaken, we have the capacity and are prepared and ready to defend ourselves against all external invaders. “We should all be reminded that yesterday made it exactly one year when an invading gang of killer herdsmen killed at least over 20 people in Igangan, Ibarapa North local government of Oyo State on a Saturday night, leaving several houses, including the palace of the Asiganga burnt in the attack, whilst people were asleep. Exactly a year ago! “When calamities like this befall us without a single trace, the interpretation is that the intelligence unit of our country’s security architecture is probably faulty or completely missing. “I implore the six governors across the South-West region and their brothers nationwide as well as the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)-led Federal Government, to live up to their oaths of securing Nigerians and ensuring safety for all citizens irrespective of their age, sex, religion or tribe.” The Ooni also mentioned that talks with traditional rulers and governors across the South-West zone were ongoing in order to foster “concrete plans to safeguard our people.” “To my brother, the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, and the entire Owo kingdom, to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, to the Ondo State Government, to the people of Owo, to the Priest and parishioners of St. Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa, Owo, to the families of all the victims, and the entire people of Ondo State, it is my prayer that Olodumare will comfort you all and give you peace in these trying time,” he said.

BREAKING: Former National Secretary of APC Dumps Party

  The immediate past National Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator John Akpanudoedehe, has dumped the party. This was contained in letter by senator Akpanudoedehe, addressed to the APC Chairman of offot ward 6, Uyo, Akwa-Ibom state. The Former APC secretary faulted the party’s style of handling selection of candidates in Akwa Ibom State. In the letter titled, “RESIGNATION OF MY MEMBERSHIP OF THE ALL PROGRESSIVES Congress”, reads, “I write to notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), forthwith. “Henceforth, I cease to be a member of the APC in my ward (ward 6 in Uyo LGA) or anywhere for that matter. I hereby relinquish all rights which inured to me as a member of the APC, member of the National Advisory Council and member of National Caucus of the APC “This decision to part ways with the APC, is a tough one, but leadership entails adherence to the wishes of the vast majority of associates, allies and supporters who have shown fidelity overtime and have now witnessed the obduracy of the APC in handling the Candidates Selection processes in Akwa Ibom State. “Our greater goal of providing service to the people of our dear state remains sacrosanct”.

[BREAKING] APC Presidential Primary: Buhari, Northern govs in closed-door meeting

  PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari is currently meeting with the All Progressives Congress, APC, from the north at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The meeting is coming a day before the commencement of the party’s convention to elect its presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections. Although President Buhari has maintained his position on the consensus arrangement, there has not been any agreement among the 23 presidential aspirants. The meeting with the APC governors from the north is the fourth parley in his effort to ensure that the party presents a consensus candidate so as to reduce acrimony that may arise at the end of the convention. The governors in attendance are Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum and governor of Kebbi state, Atiku Bagudu, chairman of Northern governors Forum and governor of Plateau State, Simeon Lalong, Abubakar Baduru (Jigawa) and Babagana Zulum (Borno). Others are Aminu Bello Masari (Katsina), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Bello Matawale (Zamfara), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Yahaya Inuwa (Gombe), Abubakar Bello (Niger), and the Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni. As at the time of sending this report, only the governor of Kogi, Yahaya Bello was yet to arrive.

CiPDI frowns at terrorists attack on Ondo church, asls security operatives to fish out perpetuators

  The Centre for Innovative, Pragmatic and Development Initiative (CIPDI) has condemned Sunday terrorists attack on St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, headquarters of Owo local government area of Ondo state. The terrorists had dropped explosives on the Church, located close to the palace of the Olowo of Owo, killing scores of worshippers and injuring several others. The president of CIPDI, Mr Ifeanyi Nwanoro in a statement on Monday, condemned the dastardly act and called on security agencies to, not only apprehend the perpetrators but also bring them to book. “CIPDI condemns the terrorist attack on the people of Owo Kingdom in Ondo state. The killing of Parishioners is senseless and void of human reasoning. “We call on the security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book. “Our prayers and thoughts go out to the families of the dead and injured. Let’s keep the people of Ondo in our prayers as well as those who were abducted in Abuja and parts of Katsina yesterday. “GOD bless and protect the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement reads. CLARIFICATION: Osinbajo Not Involved In An Accident- Aide

  Contrary to our earlier report, the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo wasn’t involved in an accident. Quoting another online source, we had reported that the Vice president’s car somersaulted along airport road while he was on his way to Owo, Ondo State to commiserates with the victims of yesterday’s terror attack in the state. However, his media Aide, Laolu Akande said his Boss wasn’t involved in the crash but only stopped by to help a victim, adding that the Vice president is heading to the scene of the incident having arrived the sunshine state. “On his way to the airport this morning, VP came across a road traffic accident, stopped to lend assistance, & ensured victim was taken to the hospital with VP’s convoy ambulance. “He then proceeded on his trip and is now in Ondo State heading to site of yesterday’s attack in Owo,” the media Aide to the vice president tweeted. FAKE NEWS ALERT: No kidnapping in Abuja, say police on incident at ‘Gwarimpa estate’

’ The federal capital territory (FCT) police command has refuted reports of the abduction of residents of an estate in Abuja. There have been reports that bandits abducted some residents of Genuine estate in Gwarimpa. The bandits were said to have invaded the estate in large numbers between 1am and 4am, and were armed with bows, arrows, and machetes. They reportedly abducted an unknown number of residents. Josephine Adeh, FCT police spokeswoman, however, told TheCable that there was no incident at the Gwarimpa estate. “Nothing happened in the Gwarinpa estate. The only incident that occurred was a burglary at Queens Efab Estate, Galadima at around 3am,” she said. “The police received the distress call and responded to it. No one was kidnapped. All the laptops, phones and gadgets that were stolen have been recovered by the police. There was no attack or kidnap at the Gwarimpa estate.” Less than 24 hours ago, gunmen attacked St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo state. The church was attacked during service on Sunday. The gunmen were said to have detonated explosives before firing at the congregants. Many worshippers were killed in the attack, including children and women. President Muhammadu Buhari, in a statement by Femi Adesina, his spokesperson, said only demons from the underworld would have conceived and carried out the attack. Buhari condoled with the families of the deceased, the Ondo state government and the Catholic community. “No matter what, this country shall never give in to evil and wicked people, and darkness will never overcome light. Nigeria will eventually win,” the statement reads.

From the paper size posters to inflated balloons hung in the middle of the road as well as others flying on a predetermined trajectory, all the aspirants seek acceptance to emerge the flag bearer of the party. The towering posters compete for attention of passers-by and their efficacy can be felt as onlookers take a long gaze. The posters include those of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmed Lawan, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello and former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun. Gunmen abduct Catholic priest in Kogi

  Christopher Onotu, a Catholic priest, was on Saturday, abducted by gunmen in Obangede, Okehi LGA of Kogi state. The gunmen reportedly broke into the priest’s rectory on Saturday night before whisking him away. The congregation got to know about the priest’s abduction on Sunday morning when they went to attend morning mass. Williams Ayah, police public relations (PPRO), confirmed the development to TheCable on Monday morning. The police said a manhunt has been launched to ensure the kidnappers are apprehended and the victim rescued. “The commissioner has already deployed personnel,” he said. “A manhunt has been launched for the perpetrators to be arrested. We are collaborating with the military, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to ensure the man’s release.” Priests are increasingly being targeted by gunmen across the country. In March, gunmen killed two people and abducted Joseph Aketeh, a catholic priest, a woman and two children in Kaduna. Weeks ago, Joseph Bako, a Catholic priest who was abducted from his residence at St John Catholic Church, Kudenda, Kaduna, was found dead. Onotu’s abduction also comes days after two persons were killed and many injured in an explosion that occurred during an annual festival in Okene LGA of Kogi state.

Kola Abiola declared winner of PRP presidential primary

  Kola Abiola has won the presidential primary of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) for the 2023 elections. The first son of the late MKO Abiola defeated Usman Bugaje, Patience Key, and Gboluga Mosugum, a retired colonel, to pick the PRP ticket. Abiola secured 2,097 votes, while Bugaje came second with 813 votes, Key had 329 and Mosugu polled 263 votes. NAN reports that a total of 3,625 delegates were accredited with 3,519 valid votes and 141 invalid votes The collation was said to have been witnessed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Falalu Bello, the national chairman, said delegates from the 36 states and the federal capital territory (FCT) voted for the aspirants from their respective states. “We want to make the whole process nearer to the delegates. The delegates are in the states. So that is why we decided that the primary election will take place in the 36 states and the FCT,” he said. “Definitely, having it in the states, rather than bringing them here, is more convenient for them. “We set up 37 committees headed by the nominees from the national executive committee in the states along with the state organising secretaries to conduct this exercise in the states.” Bello added that all the presidential hopefuls had resolved to support whoever is elected as the party’s candidate.

  The Vice-Chancellor, University of Abuja, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na-Allah, says the institution has gone tough on lecturers sexually harassing students, as two professors had been dismissed for the offence. Na’Allah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in New York that the university had introduced a policy on sex abuse on campus, which had been published. Na-Allah, who was on a two–day visit to the U.S., to meet with the University of Abuja Alumni Association, USA chapter, to solicit support for the institution, said, ”female students needed to be protected.” According to him, the institution is committed to high moral standards and will not tolerate any act of misconduct perpetrated by its staff against students. “I have dismissed two professors since I became the vice- chancellor. It tells you how we are serious about the issue of sexual harassment. “We are collaborating with some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), to make sure that it is not only us that are addressing this issue, but we have a strong partnership. “We cannot allow the lives of our students to be destroyed, because most of the abuses destroy the lives of their victims.’’ The vice-chancellor said: ”it was sad to see some lecturers, who are supposed to be protecting the female students, becoming one of their problems. “This a problem of universities in Nigeria, not only University of Abuja alone. “But UniAbuja is pursuing it with vigour, because, we know this is one of the issues to address to make our university one of the best in Nigeria. “As I speak now, there are several investigations ongoing by a committee set up, addressing the problem,’’ he told NAN. The VC said that the university was working round the clock to make sure the institution become number one in Nigeria, adding that ”the best way is to improve on academics of the student. “We are trying to provide all the facilities that the students need, for instance, the smart classrooms, internet facilities on campus and other areas.’’ Na-Allah further said that the Centre for Distance Learning (CDL), in the university was among the best in Nigeria, adding that Nigerians in diaspora could take programmes anywhere in the world from the centre virtually. “People from everywhere in the world are students from first degree up to PhD level at the CDL. Things are easier now; you can even do your defense on zoom. “We have created a virtual classroom system and we are working with the National University Commission (NUC), to see that its policies are reversed in such a way to support virtual system. “We are collaborating with the University of Arizona, U.S, because it has a large virtual system and we are exploring relationship for online programmes with the university,’’ he said.
