Oyo Gets New Deputy Governor

The approval followed the nomination of Lawal to the lawmakers for consideration by Governor Seyi Makinde as a replacement for Olaniyan. Before his appointment, Lawal was the Chairman of the State Housing Corporation. He had also served as the state Attorney-General. He hails from Kisi in the Irepo Local Government area. Lawal’s nomination is contained in a letter by the governor to the lawmakers, which was presented at the plenary. NAN reports that the House had gone on a short recess shortly after the impeachment of Olaniyan as the deputy governor. The lawmakers later reconvened at about 12.15 p.m to consider the appointment of the new deputy governor. The Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, while reading the letter from the Executive, said it was in response to an earlier letter sent by the lawmaker to the Governor dated July 18, informing him of the impeachment of Olaniyan. Defending the nomination of Lawal, the House Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin, said that the nomination should be favourably considered, approved and adopt in view of his antecedents in contributing to the progress of the state. Seconding the motion, Kazeem Olayanju, representing Irepo/Olornsogo State Constituency, said that the House should confirm Lawal as the new Deputy Governor of Oyo State. In his remarks, the speaker put the nomination to a voice vote, which went the ways of the “ayes”. According to him, with the vote, Lawal has been approved as the Deputy Governor of the state. The House, however, adjourned plenary until July 21.

Gunmen abduct travellers in Anambra

Gunmen have abducted about four travellers in Nise Community, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria’s South-east. The incident happened at about 3 p.m. on Sunday in the community’s market, about seven kilometres away from the official residence of Governor Charles Soludo in Amawbia, a neighbouring community in the council area. Sources said the gunmen robbed the travellers and razed a vehicle they were in. They also stopped and robbed some residents around the area before zooming off with an SUV belonging to their victims, PREMIUM TIMES learnt. The gunmen were said to have left with about four passengers after the operation which lasted for about 30 minutes. The police spokesperson in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES but said only one person was abducted. “The information I have before me shows that one person was abducted at 3:30 p.m. yesterday (Sunday),” he said. The police spokesperson said following the receipt of information about the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Echeng Echeng, immediately deployed some operatives to track down the gunmen. “The command operatives have since been on the track of the abductors and the situation is closely monitored,” Mr Ikenga, a deputy superintendent of police, added. Worsening insecurity Security in Nigeria’s South-east has deteriorated lately with frequent attacks by armed persons across the region. Anambra State has witnessed some of the worst attacks in the region. The attacks often target security agencies, government officials and facilities. This latest incident occurred three months after gunmen abducted five wedding guests in Akpo, a community in Aguata Local Government Area of the state. The Nigerian government has accused outlawed the Indigenous People of Biafra of being responsible for the deadly attacks in the region. But the group has repeatedly denied their involvement. The separatist group is the leading agitation for an independent state of Biafra which they want to be carved out from the South-east and some parts of South-south Nigeria. The leader of the secessionist group, Nnamdi Kanu, is detained in Abuja where he is facing trial for terrorism

[Videos] SPECIAL REPORT: Outrage as Ebubeagu operatives gun down many youths in Imo communities – Imo govt silent

Ibe Pascal Arogorn EBUBEAGU,, a local security outfit set up by gov Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has extrajudicially continued to kill many youths in Imo communities without reasons. The latest incident of these ugly acts by Ebubeagu operatives happened at Awommama and Otulu communities in Oru East Local Government Area Of Imo State on Sunday evening. It was gathered that two siblings were also shot dead by Ebubeagu security outfit. In the first video, four corpses of youths were seen lying helplessly by the roadside. Each of the youths were shot on their chests.   In the second video, a woman from the community was seen in a sober mood. She lamented that over fourteen youths from the same community who went for traditional marriage on Sunday were killed by Ebubeagu operatives.   In another video, angry youths were also seen protesting over the outrageous killing in the community.   A source who do want to be named, while expressing grievances said the security outfit needs to be put in check by the appropriate authorities. When contacted Imo State commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba said he hasn’t seen any of the videos. Calls put across to Imo police spokesperson, Mike Abattam, were neither responded nor returned to. In June, a civil rights group, tRule Of Law And Accountability Advocacy Center (RULAAC) urged president Muhammadu Buhari and other concerned authorities to investigate the activities of Ebubeagu operatives in Imo State. The group was seriously concerned about the rampant incidence of invasion and siege on communities in Orlu and environs and other communities in Imo state by a group of rampaging armed men said to be members of ‘EbebeAgu Security Outfit’ allegedly set up by the Governor of Imo State ostensibly to combat unknown gunmen. They operate in a convoy of vehicles provided by the state governor. According to RULAAC executive director, Okechukwu Nwangunma, there are videos of several incidents depicting acts of savagery by these bloodthirsty armed men who mainly target young people. They carry out random arrests and invasive bodily checks on the young men for body marks and tattoos. Ones they see any mark on any young man, he’s automatically labeled IPOB and taken away and may never be seen again alive. The Police Act 2020 prohibits profiling and arrest of persons based only on their looks, hairstyle or bodily marks. HARVESTING OF VICTIMS” BODY PARTS There have been unverified but widespread reports of harvesting of body parts of some of the victims and burning of their remains beyond recognition. Some are allegedly brutalised and asked to transfer money in exchange for not being killed. Young women are allegedly seized, taken to bush paths or inside their vehicles and gang-raped and asked to thank God that they were not killed. In some cases, these Ebubeagu operatives are said to carry out joint operations with Police, Civil Defence, Military and DSS operatives. Some people arrested during such joint operations have been traced to the Tiger Base office of the IRT in Owerri Imo State. Torture, killing and extortion have been reported. Young men are arrested at random, taken into custody, tortured and disappeared. In few cases, lucky ones are extorted of huge sums of money and released. This siege has forced young people – mainly teenagers and youth – to flee their communities leaving only old women and men and children. In a recent video that was shared with RULAAC from different sources, a family in Okporo Orlu was on 16th Of June, 2022, allegedly invaded by so called Ebubeagu Security outfit in search of youth in the village and they ended up shooting everybody in sight in the compound including the elderly men, leaving several of them in the pool of their blood. Why would somebody shoot elderly people in the name of security? Our preliminary findings reveal that a lot of militant elements without training were handed guns to go after the ‘unknown gunmen’. Their only qualifications may have been the fact that they have been shooting in the underworld. Else, nothing justifies or even rationalises the terror being unleashed on the civilian population in Orlu by men who are not by law authorised to bear assault rifles! The unknown gunmen seem to have gone underground, now they are feasting on soft targets – assaulting, intimidating, extorting and making a bad situation worse! Their activities have become too egregious and inhuman to condone, and the outrage too loud to ignore. We are therefore concerned that despite the outcry by members of the affected communities, security agencies in the state appear helpless while the governor who set up this outfit and to whom alone they report stands aloof as a whole youth population in Orlu and environs are being decimated. Whatever may be the explanation for this siege cannot be in interest of public safety and security. APPEAL TO BUHARI RULAAC calls on President Muhammadu Buhari in his capacity as the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and as the ultimate Constitutional authority in control of security in Nigeria to intervene decisively in aid of these communities affected by insecurity.

Osun Election: Bola Ige’s Voice Rose From The Grave – Soyinka

Professor Wole Soyinka has said that the voice of Ajibola Ige, slain Minister of Justice, resounded from beyond the grave in the just concluded gubernatorial election in Osun State. According to the renowned playwright, the outcome of the Osun gubernatorial election is a is a lesson that speaks to other zones of rightful public expectations, equity, and just entitlements. In a brief communique on Sunday, the Nobel Laureate said those who conspired to catapult Ige’s destroyers to unmerited national prominence, to insult the memories of the living, and jettison basic ethical constraints, have been justly served. “One despairs but continues to hope that there are still receptive minds in which such lessons will germinate. “If we may adapt a wise saying from the ancients: the beast of burden, nicknamed Equity, ambles its mined course to destination but, sooner or later, that donkey arrives,” the poet buttressed his assertions. Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defeated Adegboyega Oyetola the incumbent governor who ran on the aegis of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the governorship election which held on Saturday. Adeleke, 62, riding on the back of a campaign aimed at developing the state and retrieving what he says is his stolen mandate, secured 403,371 votes, 28,344 more than his closest rival, Governor Oyetola who polled 375,027 votes.

Festus Okoye: INEC still in talks with CBN over storage of election materials

Festus Okoye, commissioner for information and voter education of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says the commission is still in talks with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over storage of election materials. This statement comes weeks after Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the commission, said sensitive election materials would no longer be “routed” through the CBN. Yakubu had said the electoral body never had any issue with the CBN since the partnership started, but owing to “current circumstances”, an alternative would be found. However, speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, Okoye said logistics measures taken in Ekiti and Osun governorship elections will not be sustainable for the general election.   He said the commission employed the services of the Nigerian Air force for the logistics of the electoral materials, adding that because of the huge amount of the ballot papers and other sensitive materials, the commission will have a “sit-down” with the CBN to draw out plans for the 2023 elections. “You cannot use the Ekiti governorship election and Osun governorship election as a measure of what will happen in 2023,” he said. “This is because for instance, in the Ekiti governorship election, we had less than a million registered voters. In the Osun governorship election, we were shy of two million registered voters.   “These are stand alone elections. For the Ekiti election, we utilised the service of the Nigerian Air force and they flew the materials into Akure airport. We did the same thing with the Osun election, and we moved the materials to our state offices. “But for the 2023 general election, we are going to have over 95 million ballot papers printed for the presidential election. Over 95 million will be printed for the senatorial election; over 95 million papers will be printed for the house of representatives election. Then it goes down. “It’s going to be a huge logistics nightmare. What we intend to do going forward since there are issues with keeping our materials with CBN, we have not had enough opportunity to sit down with the Central Bank to review the entire issue surrounding our moving our material with the Nigerian Air force. “We are definitely going to do that. If at the end of the day, we are not satisfied with the arrangement then we are going to look for a new logistics pathway of how to manage logistics during the 2023 elections. But no decision has been made.   “When you have to move materials to 36 states of the federation and the capital territory, it’s a completely different ball game. “What we did in Ekiti and Osun in terms of the general election will not be sustainable. We need to look for a complete logistics pathway of how to deal with this particular problem.”

I Will Give Buhari’s Govt Pass Mark – Adamu

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has said he rates the performance of President Muhammadu-led administration as pass or credit. He also expressed strong optimism over the APC’s chances of retaining power in the 2023 presidential election. The former governor of Nasarawa State stated this on Sunday during a conversation on Arise TV on the APC chances ahead of the general elections. Adamu said with 22 APC governors among the 36 states of the federation, he was certain of the party’s chances to win the presidential election. He said, “As I speak to you, we have 22 (APC) states. And I don’t have a reason to believe that we are not going to win. I don’t contemplate any situation that can make us lose the election. But that’s not to say we don’t have to work for it. We are working for our victory and by the grace of God, victory will be ours in 2023.” The APC leader added that despite the party’s efforts to win the 2023 elections, he was aware of the problems bedeviling the country, adding that party was doing its best to address them, because “the whole thing about governance is to keep addressing these issues until we get to the promised land.” He further stated that the security challenges in the country did not start with the APC administration. He said he would give the Buhari-led administration a pass mark or credit for his performance so far. Adamu stated, “There’s no denying the fact that we face very serious security problems. There is no doubt about it. But if we are to be fair, the security challenges we are facing did not start with the administration of the APC. “I will give him (Buhari) a pass mark. I repeat, I will give him pass mark or credit.”
