2023: Guber candidate denies secret deal for N2.2 b monthly returns to APGA

Governorship flag bearer of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, in Abia State, Professor Greg Ibe, has denied signing any agreement with the party for alleged monthly returns of N2.2 billion if elected Governor in 2023. Ibe dismised the claims made by one of the APGA governorship aspirants, Chief Chikwe Udensi, who lost to him at the primaries as untenable cheap blackmail. According to Ibe the “ridiculous allegation” is only the figment of the imagination of the peddler who he described as “a drowning political desperado”. The governorship hopeful in a press statement by the Head of his Media Team, Sleek Ogwo, urged members of the public to disregard the misleading claims. It read in part:”Our attention has been drawn to a false and misleading online publication, unfortunately credited to Chief Chikwe Udensi, having as caption,”N2.2 billion monthly settlement of APGA Leadership with Abia Money: Emergence of Ichita vindicates Chikwe Udensi”, through which the promoter deliberately deployed canard and mendacity to attempt to denigrate and disparage the person of Prof Gregory Ibe, the Abia state candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for 2023 general elections, and sought to generously award some modicum of validity to his dwindling political profile, while aiming to misinform and thereby deceive the the public. “Our immediate response to this desperate attempt by Chief Chikwe Udensi, who after coming a distant fourth at the governorship primary election of 29 May 2023 seems to tarry too long at licking his wounds, would have been to maintain silence while focusing on the weightier matter of preparations for the 2023 general elections, but for the purpose of setting the records right, we hereby state as follows: “That contrary to the deluding information contained in false publication, Prof Ibe didn’t enter into any form of agreement, neither before, during or after the said election, to remit the sum of #2.2M to the leadership of APGA or any other group for that matter. “That this apparently baseless, libelous and malicious accusation is at best a figment of the warped imagination of the anonymous author of the article. “That Prof Ibe’s motive in offering himself for the job of Abia state Governor is to volunteer quality service aimed at transforming the state, leveraging his vast experience as a globally acclaimed technocrat, human capital resource expert, international development consultant and renowned academic, and not to indulge in the ignoble act of ‘sharing’ state funds. “That, Chief Udensi, who remains a BOT member of APGA should show leadership and desist from acts reminiscent of the callousness displayed by the wicked mother in the bible, who desired King Solomon to deploy the sword in dividing and sharing her neighbor’s living child into two parts just because she lost hers in the course of the night, out of her own careless disposition. ” That Abians, and indeed the general public, are once again enjoined to discountenance this baseless accusation and rather remain resolute in their determination to ensure that old things do pass away even as a brand new Abia begins to emerge with Prof Gregory Ibe at the helm of affairs.

Why I had surgery in Nigeria — VP Osinbajo

Although his doctors advised him to consider doing the surgical operation to correct a fracture on his right femur (thigh bone) abroad, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo insisted on using a Nigerian hospital and medical experts for the procedure. According to sources close to Duchess International Hospital where the operation took place on Saturday, some of the government and private practice doctors of the Vice President made the suggestion because the going abroad option is often usually considered by such class of patients and at times the option could also seem more seamless. osun election But one of the doctors who coordinated the whole operation, Dr. Yemi Onabowale, who is the founder of the Reddington Hospital, was quoted to have said “the VP was clear that he had confidence in Nigerian doctors both at home and abroad and would prefer they handle the operation.” His preference to have the surgery done in Nigeria is also being regarded as a major boost for the government’s often stated objective of a reversed medical tourism as some voices in the healthcare sector have expressed excitement at Prof Osinbajo’s choice. He was also said to have argued that doing the operation in Nigeria would not only encourage Nigerian doctors who are among the best anywhere in the world, but it would also help develop the capacity here in Nigeria. warmly including groups of doctors like some NMA chapters and other public intellectuals Meanwhile, the Federal Executive Council, FEC, has wished Prof Osinbajo quick recovery, after the successful operation. FEC conveyed its goodwill message in a statement yesterday in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha. Mustapha said the surgical operation, possibly related to a long standing injury associated with the game of squash, was performed by a team of specialist doctors in Lagos. “As Prof. Osinbajo recuperates from the surgical operation, FEC wishes him quick recovery so as to continue to give the needed support for the overall growth and stability of the country, “ Mustapha said.

Over 100 bandits attend turbaning of their leader in Zamfara

Over 100 bandits, on Saturday, attended the turbaning ceremony of a bandit kingpin called Ada Aleru as the Sarkin Fulani by the Emir of Yandoto. Meanwhile, a large number of bandits from Zamfara forest have reportedly crossed to Tudunwada-Sabon Layi in the western part of Birnin-Gwari, Kaduna State, where they killed a local and injured three during a looting spree. An official of Birnin-Gwari Vanguards for Security and Good Governance, said: “At the moment, they are on a looting spree at Ganun-Gari near Dawakin Bassa after they ransacked neighbouring Unguwar Baki. “The bandits have rustled cattle and took away foodstuffs at Unguwar Baki. “Casualty figures are unknown at this time. But the bandits are expected to return through the same route (Tudunwada-Sabon Layi) to their hideout in Zamfara. “One person was killed and three others injured at Ganun-Gari. The bandits are now at Dawakin Bassa. There is heavy gunfire at the moment. The gun sounds are heard at Unguwar zakara and Kubo villages. “The bandits will retreat to their base after operation at Dawakin Bassa through the same route they followed.” Locals in Tsafe town of Zamfara State said over 100 bandits on Saturday attended the turbaning ceremony of a bandit kingpin called Ada Aleru as the Sarkin Fulani by the Emir of Yandoto. According to a source, “the bandits were going on motorcycles without their guns. It was a brief ceremony attended by a few people. “The Emir of Yandoto, Alhaji Garba Marafa, gave the title of Sarki Fulani to the notorious bandit who operated in Zamfara and Katsina states because he was willing to embrace peace. “At a meeting, Ada Aleru agreed to stop attacking the communities and villages in the emirate. He has also agreed to allow people to go to their farms. “This made the emirate confer the title on Aleru so that he would help to ensure peace returns to the emirate.”

Marketers finally hike petrol price to N170-N190/litre

Premium Motor Spirit popularly known as petrol will now be sold between N170/litre and N190/litre in filling stations across the country, following what is believed to be a subtle agreement between Federal Government officials and oil marketers. Findings by The PUNCH on Sunday revealed that the development was the outcome of a meeting between the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and oil marketers on Thursday. Sources privy to the meeting said it was agreed that the pump price of petrol should be increased by N10 per litre. A market survey on Sunday revealed that price display boards at some petrol stations in Lagos reflected new prices starting between N170 per litre and N175 per litre. However, some other filling stations sold above these prices, with some selling as high as N185/litre. Oil marketers denied holding a meeting with the NMDPRA on the subject matter but sources close to the matter confirmed to our correspondent that the meeting actually held. The officials said the NMDPRA agreed marketers could increase their pump price to N165-N175/litre for filling stations inside towns, and a maximum of N190/litre for those on the outskirts. “The meeting was held and everybody was told to keep mum. A band of N165-N175/litre was approved for the filling stations inside towns, while N189 was approved for those outside towns,” our source said. The NMDPRA could not verify this claim as of press time on Sunday. The spokesman for the NMDPRA, Kimchi Apollo, did not respond to several calls made to his telephone line. However, marketers under the aegis of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria confirmed the fuel pump price hike to our correspondent. The National Operations Controller, IPMAN, Mike Osatuyi, explained the reasons behind the fuel pump price hike. Osatuyi, who also denied that a meeting held between oil marketers and the Federal Government on Thursday, however, disclosed that there was a fresh increase, describing it as a “market fundamentally determined price.” “Petrol now sells between N175-N180 per litre depending on the area, ‘’ he said. Northern fuel marketers threaten strike over N50bn bridging fund “Petrol is now available and as you can see, the queues in Lagos and Abuja have disappeared. We are businessmen and it’s impossible for us to run at a loss. Marketers are allowed to sell at a minimum price of N170 and a maximum of N180. There’s something we call market fundamentals; this is what came into play here. This is because it is impossible to bring the product into your station at N170 and sell at N165,” he added. When asked if there was a circular from the NMDPRA to the effect, he responded “no”, adding, “there was no meeting but what you saw was simply an increase due to market forces.” Explaining further, he said the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company’s price template, which has the current official price of N165/litre, was arrived at about 12 ago. “The template is 12 years old when the dollar was still N175 and diesel was sold at N200/litre. Now, diesel is around N850. Even major oil marketers have changed their price boards to reflect the new band. It’s no more hidden. It is better for fuel to be available at N180 or N185 than buying at N250 from black marketeers. Now, no more boys going around with jerry cans, you can drive in and buy with ease”, he said. Meanwhile, findings showed on Sunday that fuel queues at petrol stations in Lagos and Abuja, which had lingered since February, suddenly disappeared over the weekend following the latest development. Meanwhile, economist and Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, Dr. Muda Yusuf, told The PUNCH that the current price is not sustainable. According to him, the government is in the best position to control the prices of petrol if it cannot control diesel prices. He said, “Already, National Bureau of Statistics reports make us understand that except for Lagos, Abuja and other big cities, petrol prices are already above N165/litre. That is the market reality, except the government doesn’t want private entities to get involved in the market because these guys are there to do business and not to run at a loss. These marketers share their figures with everybody. Most of these guys are based in Lagos and they transport their products in trucks that run on diesel. Can the government control the prices of diesel? If they can’t then, they should hand off regulating prices. They should first resolve the surging diesel prices and challenges at the depots before pouncing on marketers. Otherwise, their businesses will close down, and black marketers will take over the business – that’s when we will see more adulterated products capable of burning down houses and cars,” he said. Also, a former Chairman of the Major Oil Marketers of Nigeria, Tunji Oyebanji, declined to comment on the new price but told The PUNCH that the Federal Government’s price template was old and needed to be updated. He said, “Nobody had any meeting with the NMDPRA. The only thing we have continued to say is that N165/litre is not sustainable because the template with which that price was arrived at made all the elements therein fixed and unchanged. Elements such as coastal, NPA, NIMASA jetty throughput, storage and financing, which were used to arrive at the ex-depot price were all based on the old dollar and old diesel prices. “All the items on the template have currently gone up because of the exchange rate which impacted our operating costs due to the high cost of diesel. As of the time when the template was done, diesel was N130/litre, now it is N800 which allows for an operating cost of N4.00. That is why N165/litre cannot work. Nobody is saying price should be this or that, but that government should come to our aid.” According to him, if the price is not increased, marketers will soon go out of business. Also
