Why I didn’t anoint any presidential aspirant – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has opened up on why he was neutral and allowed delegates to vote for their preferred presidential candidate during the All Progressives Congress’ special convention and presidential primary. The President opened up on what transpired during the buildup to the party’s convention on Saturday in Katsina when he paid a Sallah visit to the Emir of Katsina, Dr. Abdulmumin Usman Kabir, at his palace. Speaking on what played out before the emergence of the party’s flagbearer, Bola Tinubu, Buhari explained that the delegates were given a free hand to pick him (Tinubu) in demonstrating the internal democracy in the party. According to him, party leaders initially gave me a list of thirty presidential aspirants, out of which I was asked to pick a candidate of my choice. The President said rather than pick or anoint a candidate, he allowed the delegates to pick the candidate of their choice which resulted in the emergence of Tinubu. Buhari, who spoke in Hausa, said, “I was given a list of thirty (30) aspirants to pick from. Most of them were my ministers and governors. So, who will I choose or support? “One of the governors even came to see me and asked who are we to choose. “If I do that, it would affect my Vice President because he was listening to our conversation. I then told them to choose who they want. “So, they elected Tinubu as APC presidential candidate.” He added, “I hope the forthcoming (2023) general elections would also be peaceful just like the way APC conducted its congress where they elected the party’s National Chairman, the presidential candidate and how the presidential candidate picked his running mate. “I hope God will help us to conduct the general elections peacefully.” He, however, appealed to Nigerians to allow peace to reign during the 2023 general elections. On insecurity in Nigeria, the President insisted that his government was doing its best in tackling the challenge. “May God gives us the wisdom to serve people more,” he declared. The Emir of Katsina had while welcoming the President to the palace, urged him to expedite action on the Kano/ Katsina highway; the Kano/ Katsina/ Maradi railway and the Rimi Windmill Power generation project. The monarch said apart from contributing to the development of Katsina state, the projects would also create employment for residents. The state Governor, Aminu Masari, in his remarks also said security operatives were doing all they could to tackle banditry and other crimes in the state. He called on residents to also give the security operatives the necessary support. The governor later saw the President off to the Umaru Musa Yar’dua Airport where he later took off for Abuja in a Nigeria Air force Aircraft.

Ousted Leader Says He Did ‘Utmost’ For Bankrupt Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s ousted president did his “utmost” to avoid an economic catastrophe but the coronavirus pandemic derailed his efforts, he said in his resignation letter read out to parliament Saturday. Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s brief note, sent from the safety of a safe haven in Singapore, blamed Covid-19 for the financial meltdown that triggered months of protests, culminating in his humiliating escape abroad. “I have contributed my utmost for the country and in the future too, I will contribute for the country,” Rajapaksa said in the letter, read to MPs by parliament’s Secretary-General Dhammika Dasanayake. It was not clear whether he was signalling an intention to remain involved in politics from exile. “It is a matter of personal satisfaction for me that I was able to protect our people from the pandemic despite the economic crisis we were already facing,” Rajapaksa insisted. The virus claimed more than 16,500 lives and infected over 660,000 in the nation of 22 million, where Rajapaksa refused to institute a lockdown in the initial wave and told doctors: “Don’t panic.” One of his cabinet ministers said Sri Lanka did not require foreign vaccines and that local remedies from shamans were more than adequate. Rajapaksa claimed Sri Lanka’s reserves were already low when he took office in November 2019 and the subsequent pandemic devastated the economy. But critics say the government’s mismanagement was a crucial factor. Official figures show Sri Lanka had $7.5 billion in foreign exchange reserves when he took over, dropping to just $1 million by the time he quit. The country is officially bankrupt. Rajapaksa, 73, came to power in 2019 as a strongman leader but was forced out of his official residence a week ago when it was stormed by thousands of protesters. Parliament is due to elect his permanent successor on Wednesday, after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe — also an object of the protesters’ scorn — was sworn in as an interim replacement. There was no debate on Rajapaksa’s letter and the formal session ended after just 13 minutes, but political sources say horse-trading is already underway with no candidate having a guaranteed power bloc. Wickremesinghe, 73, is a key contender and has the backing of Rajapaksa’s SLPP party, but some of its members have said they will not vote for him. Senior SLPP dissident and former media minister Dullas Alahapperuma, 63, said he was also staking a claim, while Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa announced his candidacy on Friday night. Former army chief Sarath Fonseka, 71, also wants to run.

The police during the operation recovered a human skull, one locally made rocket propelled grande RPG launcher, two (RPG) bombs, one single-barrel long gun, and an empty chain of bullets from the criminals. The state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga disclosed this in a statement on Saturday. According to him, the attack on the suspected criminals took place on Friday. Ikenga said the suspected criminals had earlier captured two policemen and a civilian. The victims joined the police in their operation, with the aim of recovering a stolen vehicle. The police, however, reinforced and dislodged the suspected criminals, leading to the killing of 10 of them, while many others escaped with bullet wounds. “During the operation, police recovered a human skull, one locally made rocket propelled grande RPG launcher, two (RPG) bombs, one single-barrel long gun, and an empty chain of bullets. “Other recovered items include; one Toyota Sienna, one Mercedes Benz 4matic SUV, two cylinders, a huge quantity of hard drugs and other items, including a police beret and a police belt,” he said. According to Ikenga, the discovery followed a counter-offensive operation launched against criminal elements who had on 15/7/2022 laid an ambush against a 6- man police team and a civilian car tracker who were on a recovery operation of a Toyota Sienna Space Wagon. “The vehicle was earlier snatched at gunpoint on 9/7/2022 in Oye-Agu Abagana. Four of the police operatives escaped the ambush, while two of the police operatives and the car tracker were captured by the criminals. “Unfortunately, some of the hoodlums escaped with bullet wounds. They (hoodlums) had murdered their captives (two policemen and a civilian) and set their bodies ablaze. “The remains of the two murdered police officers and the civilian car-tracker have been recovered and deposited in a morgue, while police operation is still ongoing in the area to track the fleeing gang members,” he said. Ikenga quoted the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Echeng Echeng, to have condoled with the families and friends of the murdered civilian and the police operatives, describing the incident as a classic example of the risk and sacrifices the police are exposed to in the onerous task of serving and protecting the country. Echeng also assured the Anambra people that efforts are being intensified towards a total reclamation and domination of all the public spaces occupied by hoodlums in the state by apprehending and bringing them and their accomplices to justice.

IPOB accuses DSS of not allowing Kanu enough access to lawyers, family

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Saturday alleged that its leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is no longer being allowed to stay approved time with his visitors particularly, his lawyers and relations by the Department of State Services, DSS. The proscribed secessionists’ group also alleged that the DSS officials allows him to see his visitors for only 30 minutes in contravention of the competent Court Order that approved 2 hours per visit by his lawyers and family members. The peo-Biafra group equally alleged that the DSS agents have continued to flout and violet the existing Court orders strictly given by Hon. Justice Binta Nyako, concerning the welfare of Mazi Kanu, describing the action of the Nigerian secret agents as deliberate, permanent and insidious psychological torture on the person on the IPOB leader. A statement by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, entitled “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, no longer allowed to stay approved time with his visitors by DSS, Hon. Justice Nyako, made a Court Order that “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu should be visited twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays by his lawyers, family members and visitors of his choice, the DSS, has consistently and deliberately disobeyed the order as if they are above the law and the court. osun election IPOB’s statement read, “We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, ably led by our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to reiterate and register our displeasure once again over the deliberate, permanent and insidious psychological torture being meted against our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in contravention of UNHRC and all other International Human Rights laws and principles in DSS confinement and torture facilities. “The DSS agents have continued to flout and violate the existing Court orders strictly given by Justice Binta Nyako, concerning the welfare of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB leader, and a prisoner of conscience. “There abound obvious and utter disregard by DSS on the existing laws and Court Order as if they are above the law and the Court. They are consistently flouting the Court ruling that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu deserves an interface with fellow human. “Solitary confinement is a torture under UN Law. Justice Binta Nyako, made a Court Order that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, should be visited twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays by his lawyers, family members and visitors of his choice, but that Court Order has never been respected and implemented to the letters by DSS. “We want to make it known to all and sundry that our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is now being allowed to see his visitors for only 30 minutes in contravention of the competent Court Order that approved 2 hours per visit by his lawyers and family members. We equally want to remind DSS of their required obligations, some of which are to abide by stipulated Court Orders and procedures in handling all matters associated with our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, so as to minimise unforseen circumstantial consequences should anything goes wrong. “We are making a public call and open invitation to the International Community, Amnesty International, Embassies, Governments, Intersocity and NGOs, including all reputable Human Rights Organisations to monitor the gross violation of all known fundamental human rights of the leader of IPOB and all other illegally incarcerated IPOB members in Nigeria. It is no doubt that Biafrans especially Igbos race and their religious worshippers are racially profiled and discriminated against in Nigeria by DSS. That’s is why notorious terrorists and bandits from the North can kill and commits all sorts of crimes and never get arrested, but innocent and unarmed Biafrans especially, Igbos, including old men and women are indiscriminately arrested, tortured, incarcerated and made to disappear by DSS, and their sister security agents without trace. “The Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols of 8 June 1977 contain a number of provisions that absolutely prohibits torture and other cruel and inhuman treatment being meted by DSS on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other individuals especially IPOB members. “We want to let IPOB know, for example, that torture is prohibited under Article 3 common to the four Geneva Conventions, Article 12 of the First and Second Conventions, Articles 17 and 87 of the Third Convention, Article 32 of the Fourth Convention, Article 75 (2 a & e) of Additional Protocol I and Article 4 (2 a & h) of Additional Protocol II. In international armed conflict, torture constitutes a grave breach under Articles 50, 51, 130 and 147 respectively of these Conventions. “Under Article 85 of Additional Protocol I, these breaches constitute war crimes. In non-international armed conflict, they are considered serious violations. In addition, Article 3 common to the Geneva Conventions, Article 75 (2 b & e) of Additional Protocol I and Article 4 (2 a & h) of Additional Protocol II prohibit “outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment. “We are therefore, warning that If anything untoward happened with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Nigeria’s DSS solitary confinement facility or custody, they will know that IPOB members are not push over, and the consequences will leave for generations. “Men and women of good conscience and lovers of humanity across the world should advise the anti Igbo, Igbophobic, anti Biafra, Biafraphobic and anti Nnamdi Kanu, Nnamdiphobic in the Nigerian security agencies, against future danger irreparable consequences of their action. “May we reemphasize that we will not accept any stage-managed attack by DSS agents targeted at Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, we have earlier pointed out such stunt upon reception of Intelligence by M-Branch. “Using the brand names of your diverse industries (Terrorists/Bandits) interchangeably upon every state-sponsored terror activities is no longer fashionable and not accepted to us as well as to the International Community. We want the Nigerian Government to understand that Nigerians and the world understand your game; you own the terrorists, you own the bandits, you own the herdsmen, you own the unknown solders and unknown gunmen, we demand safety of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

Osun poll witnessed open vote-buying, selling – Situation Room

A coalition of over 80 civil rights organizations under the aegis of the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room on Saturday raised doubts over the credibility of the governorship election in Osun State following alleged public sale and buying of votes. The organisation said that although priority voting was given to the elderly and persons with disabilities in most of the polling units, “a few of the polling units were located in places with staircases making it inaccessible for people with crutches.” The NCCSR raised the issues in its second preliminary statement signed by its Co-conveners, Ene Obi, Asma’u Joda and James Ugochukwu. The statement read, “There was open negotiation of buying and selling of votes well-coordinated by the polling agents in many of the polling units. There were no complaints from any of them against each other. Codes and coupons were used to extract commitments from voters as opposed to the blatant money exchanging hands observed in the Ekiti State Governorship election. “From Situation Room’s observations, no violence has been recorded and the number of people who came out was encouraging. We commend the people of the State of Osun for coming out early to cast their votes, especially the elderly who waited in queues patiently. “INEC’s deployment of materials and personnel should also be commended. Vote trading was recorded in most of the areas observed particularly outside Osogbo. As voting continues, we call on all stakeholders to maintain the peaceful atmosphere recorded so far.” The organization also said Osun state has witnessed a high rate of Permanent Voters Cards collection, recording a total of 1,518,303 as reported by INEC. They added that the voting day started peacefully without any indications of the apprehension that had trailed the days preceding the election. The NCCSR said it received reports from its network of observers of the early arrival of materials and INEC officials in most of the polling units which led to the early commencement of voting. “There was adequate presence of security personnel across the State and deployed across most of the polling units visited. Security personnel was friendly and professional in their approach. A number of them complained of not receiving their allowances ahead of the election. “Some of the polling units were sited in residential spaces and palaces. In the polling units with large registered voters, the voting areas were rowdy implying that polling units with smaller numbers units are more orderly naturally. “Political party agents were present in most of the polling units observed. A minimum of four party agents and a maximum of six. “Knowledge of voting procedures and civic education of voters was very poor. Voting cubicles in many of the polling units were not positioned to ensure the secrecy of the ballots making it possible for voters to flash their votes to other people. “The BVAS were deployed according to the number of registered voters. In polling units with over 1,000 voters, INEC kept to its promise to deploy two BVAS machines. The machines functioned credibly well. “There were issues with the fingerprint verifications, however, the facial capture worked very well recording approximately one minute for accreditation and voting in Osogbo and in outside areas, it took longer.” :
