Group blasts ex-SGF Lawal over Muslim-Muslim ticket comments

A group, the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, has blasted a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, for attacking his party, the All Progressives Congress, over the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the party. The group described the former SGF’s stance on the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket as “narrow-minded, unguarded political sentimentalism and provocative.” The National President of the AYCF, Yerima Shettima, said in a statement released to The PUNCH in Kaduna on Friday that there could be no better choice of Vice President for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu than Senator Kashim Shettima in the party. He described the APC presidential running mate and former Borno State Governor as a “nationalist” to the core, adding “no one should turn our democratic space into the home of religious extremism.” According to the AYCF, Lawal and his co-travellers “in their myopic, sentimental stance, should stop this madness in this new century of advancement all over the world.” The statement added, “Talking of Muslim-Muslim ticket, have these charlatans become so blinded by emotional religious fixation that they forgot history? “We had Christian-Christian ticket with Awolowo under the UPN in 1978 and Azikiwe under the UNPP when he picked Professor Ishaya Audu – another Christian as running mate. “Since the emergence of democracy till date, the South-South, South-East states have never given the chance for Muslims to taste the seat of running mates even at the level of governorship. “Anti-Shettima campaign promoters should shut up before they create bad blood along religious fault-lines and drag the nation into further insecurity.”

Hard times: We’re hungry, dying — Physically-challenged beggars

THEY keep looking expectantly as usual for alms but little or nothing is being dropped for them. This has been the situation lately as they file out each day in their respective locations hoping to get some help for sustenance. But the helpers they have always depended upon to drop some coins and notes are now no longer available. These days, motorists, pedestrians and others who used to act as good Samaritans simply walk past them without caring to drop any money or provision for them. The times, it would appear, have changed and proved to be very difficult for the handicapped and the poor in Minna, the Niger State capital. And, this unfortunate trend is not boding well for the poor and the handicapped who depend solely on alms to survive, thus worsening their predicament. Some of them have no hands to work, while others cannot hear and see, and only depend on the help of others to move about in order to seek for assistance. They are Nigerians but are handicapped. They are voiceless and totally neglected and forgotten just because of their disabilities. Government does not have a major welfare plan in place for them either at the federal, state or local levels of governance and they are left at the mercy of kind-hearted members of the public for survival. The alms they receive from members of the public are no longer forthcoming probably because of the prevailing economic situation across the country. This situation has in no small way contributed to the hardship being faced by these categories of persons. While government makes noise about providing social safety nets for the poorest of the poor in the society, it is not clear how many of them are being catered for by any level of government, political actors and social humanitarian groups. For instance, during major festivities like Eid-El-Mubarak, Eid-El-Fitri, Christmas, Easter and New Year when alms are generously given out to people, the handicapped such as the blind, cripple, people with polio, spinal cord injuries and leprosy are virtually overlooked in the distribution and sharing of opportunities and welfare materials by politicians and top government officials as well as individuals. The just celebrated Sallah seems to be one of the unhappiest time for these less privileged and voiceless people in the society. In an interview, all the blind men, women and other physically-challenged people interviewed in Minna on how they celebrated the Eid-El-Kabir described the festivity as one of the worst in recent times. “Our expectations were high but the patronage both from government and individuals was very poor. In fact, our hopes to get gifts from them were dashed,” Malam Mohammed Abdul, a blind man lamented. “I am a widow and have five children and since the death of my husband about three years ago, I am the only one taking care of myself and the five children. I can say that this was the worst Sallah we ever celebrated because we received no assistance from the government or individuals,” another blind simply called Aminat declared. The Chairman, Polio-affected Persons Association, Niger State wing, Malam Awwal, described the last Sallah as “very dry” because there was no form of assistance from government. “In the past, the Ministry of Women Affairs used to send some gifts in form of food items like rice, grains like maize, millet, among others, to celebrate the different festivities but for the past two years, nothing of such had been sent to us. “However, an individual brought four medium size bags of rice for the 57 registered polio affected members in the state. I am not sure whether other physically-challenged people like the cripples, and members of the Spinal Cord Association, among others, were reached. Government and public-spirited individuals should always remember us during these festivities like Eid-El-Kabir, Christmas and New Year, among others. In the past years, we were given cows and foodstuffs by government and individuals and these were shared amongst the blind, crippled, deaf and dumb, even the abinos among others, and that gave us a sense of belonging and comfort. “What government and other public-spirited Nigerians should note is that we are also human beings like them, happily married with responsibilities like education, health, etc., to carry even to our extended family members,” Anwal said. Similarly, the Chairman, Blind Association, Niger State, Alhaji Rabiu Abdullahi, described the last Sallah celebration as “very low key”. “The state government has totally abandoned us. They don’t even know we exist and we are suffering in silence. Nothing came from the state government to us for the Sallah celebration, but we are aware that politicians and other well to do people in the society were adequately taken care of by the same government,” Rabiu lamented. Alhaji Rabiu Abdullahi said he remains grateful to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who sent him a ram and another Nigerlite, Alhaji Yakubu Garba, who also remembered his family saying: “These gifts from them made me and my immediate family members have the feeling of the Sallah this year, otherwise we would have been thrown into hunger and unhappiness.”

‘I can’t actualise my guber ambition here’ — Akwa Ibom senator resigns from PDP

Bassey Albert, senator representing Akwa Ibom north-east, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a letter addressed to his ward chairman in Ibiono Ibom LGA, the legislator said his decision to leave the party followed “extensive” consultation with his supporters. According to him, his aspiration to become governor of the state cannot be actualised on the party’s platform. “It is with the greatest sense of responsibility, purpose, and love for my people that I make bold this communication,” the letter reads.   “I have been a loyal and committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for over 20 years and have through the platform of the party served our people, state, and nation diligently without any blemish, and I have by the grace of God contributed positively and impactfully to the growth and development of our dear country, state, and our people in general. “I believe as a lawmaker and a distinctive one at that must at all times advocate and pursue virtues and values that promote and sustain the effective adherence to the rule of law. “As you are aware, my aspiration to serve our dear state in the office of the Executive Governor is not personal or selfish but rather the collective ambition of our people, based on the principles of justice and equity, to achieve a better and prosperous Akwa Ibom State. “Therefore, after extensive consultation with my God, family, friends, supporters, and well-meaning believers in a just and equitable Akwa Ibom State across the world, it’s obvious that these collective yearnings and aspirations cannot be actualised under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “Consequently, guided by the sentiments, concerns and worries of our people so expressed on the need to take immediate steps for the actualisation of their aspirations. “I am therefore compelled to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) forthwith.” Albert was a governorship hopeful seeking the PDP ticket.   But hours before the party’s primary election, he announced that he will not participate in the exercise. The senator attributed his decision to withdraw from the race to obedience to a court injunction relating to the ward congresses which produced the ad hoc delegates for the primary election. Some party members said to be loyal to Albert had filed a suit in a federal high court in Abuja, challenging the result of the PDP ad hoc delegates election held on April 30. According to the applicants, there were no ward congresses in the state, and the delegates’ list is compromised.

Inflation rate rises for seventh consecutive month to 18.6%

Nigeria’s inflation rate recorded a seventh consecutive monthly rise to 18.6 percent in June. This represents a 0.9 percent point rise when compared to 17.7 per cent recorded in May. The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, disclosed this today in its Consumer Price Index, CPI, Report which also stated that food inflation also increased by 1.1 percent point to 20.6 per cent from 19.5 per cent in May. The bureau stated:”In June 2022, the inflation rate increased to 18.60 percent on a year-on-year basis. This is 0.84 percent points higher compared to the rate recorded in June 2021, which is 17.75 percent. ” Increases were recorded in all COICOP divisions that yielded the Headline index. “On a month-on-month basis, the Headline inflation rate increased to 1.82 percent in June 2022, this is 0.03 percent higher than the rate recorded in May 2022 (1.78 percent) .” On food inflation NBS said:”The composite food index rose to 20.60 percent in June 2022 on a year-on-year basis; the rate of changes in average price level declined by 1.23 percent compared to 21.83 percent in June 2021. “The rate of changes in food prices compared to the same period last year was higher due to higher foods prices volatility caused by COVID 19. “This rise in the food index was caused by increases in prices of Bread and cereals, food products, potatoes, yam, and other tubers, meat, fish, oil and fat, and wine.” Meanwhile, Economist and financial analyst have projected further inflationary pressure in the remaining half of the year citing the negative impact of the first half of the year. Financial analysts at CardinalStone in their 2022 Mid-Year Macroeconomic Outlook said:” We see scope for sustained inflationary pressures in H2’22 due to the negative impact of the prior year’s low base. “In addition, we see less respite for energy costs in the near term, with diesel and gas prices poised to stay elevated.” In their H1’22 Macro-economy review analysts at Cowry Assets Management Plc noted that hyper inflation would among other things lead to desperation/survival modes and susceptibility to get-rich quick schemes adding that the price level will remain elevated. They said:”Hyper-inflation will lead to a drop in Purchasing power, decline in aggregate demand with attendant slowdown in productivity and employment, desperation/survival modes and susceptibility to get-rich quick schemes. “Higher energy prices and rising global food insecurity will keep inflation risk elevated.”

Nigeria under spell ― Pastor Enenche

The General Overseer of Dunamis Church, Pastor Enenche, has said that Nigeria is under witchcraft spell and national bewitchment. He said that the height of abnormality in Nigeria had gone so off handle that “even a blind man knows that something is wrong”. Pastor Enenche who made the remarks in Abuja while leading his congregation in prayers for the nation said that Nigerians “are suffering and smiling”. He blamed the situation of Nigeria on the invocation of demonic spirits by wicked leaders who desperately want to control the political space at all cost. According to him, Nigerians are under spell, hence some are ready to die for wicked and insensitive leaders who care less about their existence and well-being. ” People in high places of authority can go to any length. They can rent herbalists and put them in aircraft and move round the country on aircraft and move around the air to cast spell on the whole nation so that when it’s time to vote people will not know what they are voting. ” People will be campaigning for almost demons and will want to kill themselves for a person who doesn’t care for them” He lamented that politicians had mortgaged the future of the country such that generations unborn already have a gloomy future yet the populace feel that all is normal. Pastor Enenche said that the leaders of the country had failed woefully. ” It’s a blatant failure. That you left something worse than you met it. Is that success? If you know how much Nigeria is owing, you will know nothing is left.” The no-nonsense preacher of holiness prayed for the expiration of every spell cast upon Nigeria and Nigerians to suffer without complaining. He urged Christians to sustain prayers for the expiration of every national bewitchment and projection of satanic spirits upon the country until Nigerians take back their country from the political hawks.

Court Orders FG To Raise Salaries Of Judicial Officers In Nigeria

A National Industrial Court in Abuja has ordered the Federal Government to review the salaries and allowances of judicial officers in Nigeria. Justice Osatohanmwen Obaseki-Osaghae, on Friday, ruled that the current salaries and allowances of judicial officers in the country is not only abysmally low but embarrassing. The judge held that the refusal of the government to review the judicial officers salaries and allowances for 14 years was unconstitutional and unlawful. Justice Obaseki-Osaghae lamented that it is unfortunate that justices and judges who are ministers in the temple of Justice have become victims of injustice in the country. She therefore ordered the federal government to commence a monthly payment of the sum of N10m to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN); N9 million to other justices of the Supreme Court; the sum of N9m for the President of Court of Appeal, and N8m for other justices of the appellate court; N8m for the chief judges of both federal and states high courts N8m, while other judges of the courts will take home N7m. The judgement followed an originating summons by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Sebastine Hon, against the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, and the National Judicial Council (NJC) as defendants. Hon contended that under sections 4(1), (2), and 8(1) to(4) of the Nigerian Constitution with Section 6(1) (d) and parts A and B of the Fiscal Schedule to the RMAFC it is unconstitutional for the revenue commission to refuse, fail, neglect or ignore to upwardly review the salaries and allowances of judicial officers since 2008.
