Terrorists demand N4.3bn for abducted Kaduna train hostages

Terrorists are demanding a N100m ransom for each of the 43 abducted Kaduna train passengers, who are still in their custody, The PUNCH has learnt. The demand was communicated to the families of the hostages last week. This is coming five days after the alleged masterminds of the abduction were freed from the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abuja, by scores of armed men on Tuesday. The Islamic State West Africa Province claimed responsibility for the attack in a viral video 24 hours later. During the attack, over 300 Boko Haram fighters, convicted criminals and other inmates were released by the terrorists who overwhelmed the security operatives guarding the facility. The Federal Government on Thursday uploaded to the Interpol database the data of 64 Boko Haram commanders who escaped from custody during the attack. The PUNCH had reported that the terrorists attacked the Abuja-Kaduna train on March 28, killing eight and kidnapping no fewer than 61 passengers. As part of their demands, they requested the release of 15 terrorist commanders, their children detained by the military and an undisclosed amount of cash. On June 12, the terrorists released 11 hostages after 75 days in captivity, while another seven regained their freedom on Saturday. The victims were reportedly released through the assistance of the Publisher of Kaduna-based Desert Herald newspaper, Mallam Tukur Mamu, who has been negotiating with the militants. Giving an update on the situation on Sunday, a family member of the abducted victims, who didn’t want his name in print, told one of our correspondents that the terrorists were asking each family to cough up N100m ransom for the release of their loved ones. The source said the seven victims that were released on Saturday paid an undisclosed amount. He said, “It is money that is still delaying the release of the others. The terrorists are demanding ransom now. We heard the last set paid money. They (terrorists) have reached out to us as regards the payment of ransom. “The situation now is that if you have your money, your loved ones would be freed. They have pegged the ransom at N100m. It is just unfortunate.” Another family member said they were told that the terrorists were no longer interested in negotiating with the Federal Government, saying that N100m was required to free those in captivity. He said they were still pleading with the terrorists to reduce the ransom as some of them could not afford the huge amount. He noted, “My loved one has not been released, those that were released paid N100m. I don’t have that kind of money. The kidnappers got in touch with us. They said they were no longer negotiating with the Federal Government. Getting N100m is the dilemma many of us don’t have.” Meanwhile, the seven persons released by the terrorists have reunited with their families on Saturday evening. They include Bosede Olurotimi, Abubakar Zubairu, Alhassan Sule, Sadiq Abdullahi, Muhammad Paki, Aliyu Usman as well as a Pakistani, Dr. Muhammad Afzal. A victim, Sadique, who is the son of former Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, broke down in tears while thanking God for regaining his freedom. “The soldiers were considerate enough to hand us over to Tukur Mamu, the lead negotiator after we insisted that we will not go with them. The most difficult job has been done by him. Alhamdulillah(Praise be to God). “We were all taken to his office and even before then, he has contacted all our family members to come and pick us up. I can confirm to you that this man did this thing alone because even our family members were taken by surprise. They least expected the rescue soon, more so, that today (Saturday) is Sallah day,”  Sadiq added. He urged the Federal Government to hasten efforts to ensure that the remaining 43  passengers were released as soon as possible “because of their deteriorating health condition.” When asked if the terrorists were demanding  N100m, the negotiator, Manu, told The PUNCH that the government was in a better position to answer that(question) as all the terrorists wanted as their demands had to be forwarded to the government. Mamu said, “I sent the list to the government but honestly, there was nothing that was done. It was as a result of that that they (terrorists) threatened this attack (on Kuje prison) and eventually they succeeded in rescuing dozens of them(terrorists)  instead of only 10. “I think the government should explain that because it has been communicated to the government.” Mamu commended the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni over what he described as his “behind the scene role” in the release of the seven hostages. He said, “Sincerely, I have so much respect for Governor Buni. From the information I have, there is no single Yobe citizen left in that forest but that governor demonstrated an uncommon concern on this issue. “He has been in touch with me throughout, monitoring development and even reaching out to those concerned whenever there is a need to do so. “He gave lots of support. This is a governor from the North-East far from the North-West where we have this crisis. He told me not to publicise his efforts but I had to.” The Spokesman, Department of State Service, Dr Peter Afunanya, declined comment on the terrorists’ demand when contacted on the phone. The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, simply said he was not aware of the negotiations with the kidnappers. The leader of the victims’ families, Dr Abdulfatai Jimoh,  told one of our correspondents that after the release of the seven hostages on Saturday, 43 more hostages were still in the terrorists’ den. But a security consultant, Mr Chidi Omeje, said the nation is in a messy situation, noting that the ransom would further empower the terrorists to further their criminal enterprise. Another analyst, Jackson Ojo queried what he described as the government’s lackadaisical attitude to security issues, wondering why the security agencies cannot

Why I chose Shettima as running mate — Tinubu

The Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, on Sunday in Daura, said he chose former Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, as his running mate because he is “competent and reliable”. This was as he claimed that the APC has a better programme for the country and is ready to serve. Tinubu said this shortly after he visited the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), at his Daura home in Katsina State. Speaking shortly after a closed-door session with the President, he explained why he chose Shettima as running mate saying, “I chose him because he is competent, capable and reliable.” On the purpose of his visit, he said “We came to pay homage to him (Buhari) and to share part of his holiday and lunch. And to discuss the question of my substantive running mate . “The one we put in as placement has withdrawn today. There has been an announcement to replace him fully with a substantive candidate, Kashim Shettima.” Asked about his party’s chances in next year’s presidential elections, the former Lagos State governor said, “We are going to win Insha Allah. Because we are a progressive party. We have the focus on the Nigerian problems and we face the challenge squarely and we’re not running away from it. We have a better programme for the people and about the people and we are ready to serve. “Within a short period, there’s been a strong foundation on infrastructure. We faced a challenge of terrorism we know that. It’s only a poor thinker and observer who will not recognize the challenge. But once you recognize the challenge, you can prepare yourself very well to tackle it and defeat it. And that is what our party is all about.” Earlier on Sunday, the placeholder for the position of running mate to the APC presidential candidate, Ibrahim Masari, announced his resignation to the party. In a letter he signed and addressed to members of the APC Masari said, “This is to inform our esteemed party leaders under our able President, Muhammadu Buhari, teeming party members and the great people of Nigeria, of the outcome of a crucial discussion I just had with the flagbearer of our great party, the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “I had the singular honour and privilege of being nominated as the running mate to Asiwaju Tinubu last month after a keenly contested presidential primary ahead of the 2023 general election. “But, after much reflection and wider consultations, I now wish to step down. I realised that my decision will enable Asiwaju to have more latitude to give more accommodation and inclusion that will position our party to win the coming elections, with the support of the people of Nigeria. “In stepping down, I believe I can still serve our party and the country in several other capacities. “I wish to confirm that I have submitted my withdrawal letter and affidavit to that effect as the vice-presidential candidate to Asiwaju Bola TInubu in the coming elections.”

In a bid for him to help them look for the catechist, the only thing he could remember was seeing himself inside their Keke and the rest was history,” he said. Ejesieme, however, said that the good news was that the boy was miraculously abandoned at Amawbia, a neighbouring community to Awka. “The good news is that God was able to arrest his kidnappers and they abandoned him at ‘Ugwu Tank’ Amawbia and fled. “They got to the Catholic Church at Ugwu Tank Amawbia and dumped him there and left,” he said. APC, PDP have join force to defeat Peter Obi in 2023 – Aisha Yesufu

Popular socio-political activist, Aisha Yesufu, has made a new assertion about who will win the 2023 presidential elections. She said the two leading political parties, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and All Progressives Congress, APC, will have to join forces in order to defeat Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the forthcoming presidential election. Aisha, who is co-convener of BringBackOurGirls, BBOG, advocacy group, noted that 2023 is not for big money spenders. According to her, “The rate at which this is going, the call will soon be for PDP and APC to join forces for any of them to have hope of winning! “Time is the enemy of politicians that have to spend money for anything to be done and the friend of the politician that the people are ready to spend for.” Reports in Nigeria suggest that the LP candidate, Peter Obi is gathering an enormous support from the electorates, especially the youths. Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has been picked as running mate to Obi.

APC: Akpabio must be elected senator in 2023

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom has insisted that Godswill Akpabio, former minister of Niger Delta affairs, will be elected as a senator for Ikot Ekpene (Akwa Ibom North-West) in 2023. The former minister was in the race for the party’s presidential ticket but dropped his bid for another candidate. Prior to the presidential primary, on May 27, Udom Ekpoudom, a former deputy inspector-general of police (DIG), had won a primary organised for the Akwa Ibom north-west senatorial ticket. A parallel primary was also conducted and won by Ekperikpe Ekpo but was later cancelled over irregularities. A rerun conducted on June 8 was said to have produced Akpabio as the winner of the exercise. However, in the list published by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Akpabio’s name was excluded. Festus Okoye, INEC spokesperson, had asked aggrieved persons to challenge the commission’s decision in court. But making the party’s position known in a statement on Saturday, Iniobong John, chairman of the APC media committee in the state, reassured that the former minister would be elected. “There’s absolutely no cause for alarm, nothing to worry about. Reassured that Mr Akpabio will be elected senator for Ikot Ekpene (Akwa Ibom North-West) come 2023,” he said.

Pope Francis Denies Resignation Rumours

Pope Francis has rebuffed suggestions he may be readying to resign, saying in an interview published Monday that rumours he was suffering from a serious illness were “court gossip”. “It never crossed my mind”, Francis told Reuters news agency after weeks of speculation. Pressed on whether he might emulate his predecessor Benedict XVI, who was the first pope since the middle ages to resign, the Argentine said “for the moment, no. For the moment, no. Really!” But in the interview, which took place Saturday at the Vatican, he repeated his often-stated position that he might resign someday if failing health made it impossible for him to run the Church. Asked when that might be, the 85-year-old said: “We don’t know. God will say.” Francis said he had suffered a “small fracture” in his knee, which was treated with laser and magnet therapy. The knee pain forced him to indefinitely postpone a July trip to Africa. He denied rumours that he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer during his colon operation in July 2021, saying it was merely “court gossip”. Francis will travel to Canada this month, after which he said he would like to travel to Moscow and Kyiv if possible. The pontiff has repeatedly offered to help mediate the war, saying he was hopeful for an invitation to visit Russian President Vladimir Putin following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February. AFP

Nothing bad must happen to Kanu in prison – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra has said it is not oblivious of an alleged plot to attack its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, at the Kuje Prison, by men of the Department of States Services. This was as the group blamed the United Kingdom for the perpetual incarceration of the IPOB leader, saying the aim was to scuttle the actualisation for the liberation of Biafra. The IPOB’s Director of Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful, stated this in a statement, a copy of which was made available to The PUNCH on Sunday. The group said it was worried by the spates of jailbreaks in the country under the watch of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), saying the ugly trends signposted a failed nation. The group claimed the information was revealed by its Intelligence arm, the M-Branch. The statement partly read, “We, the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, under the command and leadership of our great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to reiterate our earlier emphasis over intended make-believe plan to attack the DSS facility in Abuja by already drawn up stunt actors (the DSS agents) at the very location where our leader, Mazi Nnamdi, is incarcerated having successfully tested such plans with Kuje Prisons, without consequences. “The plan was hatched by the Nigerian Government with strategic and tactical input of the UK Government. The reason for the UK and Nigeria alliance in such cowardice and evil plan is due to their disdain for allowing Indigenous People across the world to enjoy freedom such as the British enjoys Brexit from the European Union. “This alliance perceives Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as a stumbling block for their modern day oppressive tendencies and, therefore, wants him dead, having tried several unsuccessful attempts in Afaraukwu, London, USA, Kenya and even in Abuja for which Chukwu Okike Abiama had always proven himself. The IPOB intelligence unit, the M. Branch, intercepted this purported plan by Britain and Nigeria to stop Biafra agitation and freedom from Nigeria, and Nigeria and its allies have decided to replicate what they did in 1967-1970 and still on the way to do it again against the innocent citizens of Biafra. The world should take note. “The world should take note because if anything untoward happens to our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu…in the DSS custody, nobody should blame IPOB for inevitable and uncontrollable boundless calamitous consequences that would befall anyone. Know it that your silence hardens our conscience towards the pursuit of this great nation called Biafra. IPOB needs unconditional release of our leader because there is no prison in the South that is safe for him. Therefore, we still need him released unconditionally to avoid dangerous terms IPOB may take against Nigeria.” It added, “There are many jailbreaks in Nigeria since Buhari and his APC party took over power and nothing was done…the number of prison breaks was so alarming…(that) no country in the world experienced the kind of jail breaks in history. “(Records of) jailbreaks (so far) are, 1) September 3, 2015, in Sokoto Remand Home…13 inmates escaped; 2) October, 2017, Enugu Maximum Prison, 2 inmates escaped; 3) December 27, 2017, Ikot Ekpene Prison attacked, 47 inmates escaped; 4) June 4, 2018, Minna Maximum Security Prison, 240 inmates escaped; 5) October 19, 2020, Oko Prison in Edo attacked and many escaped; 6) October 21, 2020, Benin Prison break, 1,993 inmates escaped from the two facilities; 7) October 22, 2020, Okitipupa Prison break, 58 inmates released; 8) April 4, 2021, Owerri prison break, 1,844 inmates escaped; 9) September 13, 2021, Kabba prison break, Kogi, 240 inmates freed; 10) October 22, 2021, Abolongo Prison, Oyo, 837 inmates escaped; 11) July 19, 2021, Jos Maximum Security Prison attacked and inmates escaped; 12) November 28, 2021 – Jos Medium Security Prison attacked, 262 inmates released, 10 killed; 13) Jan 2, 2022, Mandala Prison Ilorin, three inmates escape 14) May 13, 2022 – Agbor Prison, Delta State, fence collapsed, three inmates escaped; 15) July 4, 2022, Kuje Prison, Abuja, attacked, 856 escaped. “All these prison breaks and Buhari and his government never found out the reasons (for the breaks) or brought the attackers or perpetrators to face the law. Therefore, we want them to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally because his life in the DSS custody is not safe and they will attack there and blame it on bandits and terrorists. “We urge the British Government to jettison pretence and direct the Nigerian Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally or send him back to the UK where he lives, or for him to return to Amaechi Mbazuruike or Professor George Obiozor, for his safety.”
