NDLEA arrests human trafficker, orphan with drugs enroute Dubai

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has foiled an attempt by a human trafficker to export illicit drug to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), by planting it in the luggage of an orphan. The Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi, said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. Babafemi said that the suspect, Matthew Bassey, who had allegedly recruited the orphan, Ms. Peter Eno, for a phantom Job in Arab nation was at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja Lagos. He said that Bassey, 29, from Oron LGA, Akwa Ibom, was arrested on July 6, following the interception of Eno at the departure hall of the Lagos airport. He said Eno’s luggage was searched, 50 parcels of cannabis (2.80kg) concealed in food items were discovered while there were discrepancies between the age she declared and the date of birth on her international passport. “Further interview reveals that the human trafficker, who recruited and brought her to the airport, Bassey, was still lurking around the airport, waiting for her departure. “He was promptly tracked and arrested. Investigations showed that the victim, who hails from the same Oron LGA of Akwa Ibom like Bassey recently lost her mother. “This made it easy for Bassey to recruit her with the promise of securing her a job in Dubai, UAE. “It was further discovered that the recruiter leveraged on the victim’s naivety and planted drugs in her bag for onward delivery to his contact in Dubai,” he said. According to Babafemi, the Chairman, NDLEA, retired Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa commended the officers and men of the MMIA command for staying vigilant and proactive in their areas of responsibility. Marwa charged them and their colleagues across the country not to rest on their oars.

Four bodies have been recovered from Friday’s boat mishap in the Ojo area of Lagos State. The four bodies, part of passengers in a W19 fibre boat carrying 16 passengers, were recovered at Mile 2 area on Saturday. The boat capsized on Friday night. General Manager, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, confirmed the recovery to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday. He said the state government had vowed to enforce safety measures and go after substandard boat operators. The general manager condoled with the families of victims who lost their lives in recent boat mishaps in the state. Emmanuel said that LASWA had put many measures in place to reduce incidents of boat mishaps. “Part of the safety measures is LASWA’s Search and Rescue Unit established to improve response in emergencies. “Lagos State government is doing all it can to ensure that the sector is viable and safe. “Government is ready to come down hard on any operator who endangers the lives of people while operating in the sector. “One of the boat drivers whose actions led to a boat mishap some years back was recently sentenced to life imprisonment,’’ Emmanuel said. He said that with the huge capital committed to water transportation, the government would not fold its arms and allow mediocrity. The LASWA boss added that the agency had collaborated with Yamaha, the manufacturer of boat engines, to reduce boat prices to enable operators to put more money into safety devices. Emmanuel admonished passengers to be safety-conscious always. “The life jacket can save you. Buy your own life jacket if you must. Inspect the life jackets that you are given and make sure they do not have holes and also avoid night travels. “Safety consciousness is a collective responsibility; if you see something unusual on the waterways, say it,’’ Emmanuel said. HURIDE/CD Condemn Assault on Odumeje

The Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders’Foundation (HURIDE) and Campaign for Democracy (CD) South East Zone have jointly condemned the assault on an Onitsha Pastor,Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere alias (Odumeje Ndaboski) by the taskforce of Anambra State Government yesterday. In the statement signed by the Executive Director of HURIDE and Chairman of CD in the South East, Dede Uzor A. Uzor, the group said it the action of the taskforce was unwarranted, a clear display of executive lawlessness and an insult to the man of God. Odumeje is the founder and General Overseer of the Mountain of Holy Ghost Intervention Deliverance Ministry , Fegge, Onitsha. He was manhandled by one of the security operatives in the team of those who demolished his church for being on drainage channel along Bida Road. But the rights groups through Dede Uzor said the action of the security man was crude, uncivilized and uncalled for. They expressed shock that this uncivilized action came from a government that pride itself of being run by an educated and well exposed person like Prof. Chukwuma Soludo. The group asked Governor Soludo to go beyond mere rhetorics and recruit civilised individuals who will carry out his policies and programmes, warning that the actions of agents of a leader goes a long way to show how a leader h assessed by the public. The rights group queried the relationship between demolishing Odumeje’s church and his physical abuse, saying that the whole thing smacks of people drunk with power and Iman of Muslim clerics will be meted with such humiliation Odumeje as a citizen deserves his fundamental rights to be respected, not to talk of the fact that he is a Pastor and popular among the people. The groups said it is not enough for the Governor to condemn the action of his team but he should go further to formally apologise to the Pastor as well as remedy the unwarranted abuse. It is very unprofessional to start the drainage from the centre where the erosion has not caused serious problems instead of Okpoko, Silas works via Creek Road leading to Odumeje’s Church. These lines were not followed before destroying Odumeje’s section of the Church

Sri Lanka’s President To Resign After Being Chased From Home

Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa announced his resignation on Saturday, hours after a crowd of angry protesters chased him from his residence, as months of frustration brought on by an unprecedented economic crisis boiled over. Hundreds of thousands of people massed in the capital Colombo to demand the government take responsibility for mismanaging the nation’s finances, and for crippling food and fuel shortages. After storming the gates of the presidential palace, a throng of protesters walked through its rooms, with some among the boisterous crowd jumping into the compound’s pool. Others were seen laughing and lounging in the stately bedrooms of the residence, with one pulling out what he claimed was a pair of Rajapaksa’s underwear. At around the same time, the leader had boarded a naval craft at the Colombo port and was taken to the island’s southern waters, where he let it be known he was finally bowing to months of calls for his resignation. “To ensure a peaceful transition, the president said he will step down on July 13,” parliamentary speaker Mahinda Abeywardana said in a televised statement. Rajapaksa had to be extracted from his residence by troops who fired into the air to keep the crowd outside at bay. Soon after they stormed the presidential palace, Rajapaksa’s nearby seafront office also fell into the hands of protesters. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the first person in line to succeed Rajapaksa, called a meeting with political leaders and said he was willing to step down to pave the way for a unity government. But that failed to placate protesters, who stormed the premier’s private residence and set it alight after night fell. Footage shared on social media showed a crowd cheering the blaze, which broke out shortly after a security detachment guarding Wickremesinghe attacked several journalists outside the home. No casualties have been reported in the fire so far, and police said Wickremesinghe and his family were away at the time. Security forces attempted to disperse the huge crowds that had mobbed Colombo’s administrative district earlier in the day, with dozens injured in the resulting clashes. A spokeswoman for Colombo’s main hospital said three people were being treated for gunshot wounds, along with 36 others suffering breathing difficulties after being caught up in tear gas barrages. ‘Not a deterrent’ Sri Lanka has suffered through months of shortages of basic goods, lengthy blackouts and galloping inflation after running out of foreign currency to import necessities. The government has defaulted on its $51 billion external debt and is seeking an International Monetary Fund bailout. Thousands of people had poured into the capital for Saturday’s demonstration, the latest outbreak of unrest sparked by the crisis. Police had withdrawn a curfew issued on Friday after opposition parties, rights activists and the bar association threatened to sue the police chief. Thousands of anti-government protesters ignored the stay-home order and even forced railway authorities to operate trains to take them to Colombo for Saturday’s rally, officials said. “The curfew was not a deterrent. In fact, it encouraged more people to get on the streets in defiance,” the defence official said. Sri Lanka has nearly exhausted its already scarce supplies of petrol, and people unable to travel to the capital held protests in other cities across the island. Demonstrators had already maintained a months-long protest camp outside Rajapaksa’s office demanding his resignation. The camp was the scene of clashes in May when a gang of Rajapaksa loyalists attacked peaceful protesters gathered there. Nine people were killed and hundreds were wounded after the violence sparked reprisals against pro-government mobs and arson attacks on the homes of lawmakers. Cricket goes on The unrest comes at the tail end of Australia’s ongoing cricket tour of Sri Lanka, with Pakistan’s squad also on the island for their upcoming series. Cricket officials said there were no plans to change their schedules, adding that the sport was unaffected by the political turmoil. “The Australian Test is coming to an end and we are due to start the Pakistan series,” a cricket board official told AFP. “There is no opposition to having the games. In fact, fans are supportive and we have no reason to reschedule.”   AFP

[BREAKING] Kaduna Train: Terrorists Free Ango Abdullahi’s Son, Pakistani, 5 Others

Some of the passengers abducted from a Kaduna-bound train in March have regained freedom. Kaduna-based publisher, Malam Tukur Mamu, disclosed this on Saturday. Mamu, who had earlier negotiated the release of 11 passengers, said the kidnappers have released seven more victims. Those released were identified as Muhammad Daiyabu Paki, Bosede Olurotimi, Abubakar Zubairu, Alhassan Sule, Sadiq Ango Abdullahi, Aliyu Usman and Muhammad Abuzar Afzal, a Pakistani. “I want to assure the nation that everything that was achieved today was singlehandedly initiated and arranged by me with the full support and prayers of my principal, Sheikh Gumi.” “That is why I keep emphasising that government has the power to end the agony of this innocent victims in one day. This is just one individual that sacrificed his life and even integrity. There is no military solution to the current security debacle in Nigeria. When you sincerely engage these guys, even though wicked with misguided religious beliefs, they are listening. I have sufficient evidence to prove that they do listen. It is this power of engagement and sincerity that resulted to the release of this seven victims. “In whatever I do, I don’t need or require any reward from anybody but from Allah and I hope the nation we sacrificed our lives for will recognise us,” Mamu said. He added that the released victims had been handed over to the military and were currently on their way to Kaduna. “The location they (abductors) gave is remote, sensitive and risky. There was a military checkpoint before penetrating the forest. My team was stopped by the soldiers but when they told the military our mission they contacted the GCO and he immediately gave approval for them to proceed. And after the victims were successfully evacuated, travelling through over 40 kilometers in the forest, they were given a military escort back to Kaduna at the checkpoint,” he said.

General Tukur Buratai (retd.), has faulted a report linking him with the about N1.85billion looted funds allegedly recovered by the Independent Practices and other related offences Commission in a property in Abuja. Buratai, in letter dated July 8, 2022 by his lawyer, Dr. Reuben Atabo (SAN), therefore, demanded that an online publication – Saharareporters, which published the said report, should retract same and apologise within seven days. A copy of the letter was obtained by journalists in Abuja on Saturday. Our correspondent contacted the Publisher of Saharareporters, Omoyele Sowore to find out if he had received the letter. He had yet to respond when our correspondent saw that SR had published it. The ex-COAS, now Nigeria’s Ambassador to Republic of Benin, said the very serious allegation in the report, which was capable of brewing hatred and attack by the public against him, had caused him great embarrassment. The letter reads, “We refer to your publication dated 23rd day of June 2022 with the caption: ‘EXCLUSIVE: Anti-graft Agency, ICPC Uncovers Billions In Cash Meant For Arms, Ammunition To Fight Boko Haram In Abuja Home Of Ex-Chief Of Army Staff, Buratai.’ “In the said publication, you alleged that the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission had recovered N1.85 billion from a house and office said to belong to our client. “It was further reported by you that ‘the huge cash was part of the billions of naira earmarked for the purchase of arms and ammunition by the Muhammadu Buhari-led government.’ “This is a very serious allegation capable of brewing hatred and attack by the public against our client as a former Chief of Army Staff. “There is no doubt that Nigerians are seriously concerned about the security situation of the country and the said publication has portrayed our client as a person responsible for diversion of funds meant for the fight against Boko Haram. “Consequently, our client has been exposed to hate, ridicule and embarrassment from members of the public with his friends calling him from different parts of the world to ask for explanations. “The publication is not only false but malicious and an attempt to malign the reputation of our client. “Our client, who is the current Ambassador to Benin Republic, rose through the ranks and became a Lieutenant General in the Nigerian Army before his retirement in the year 2021. “Our client, who was also a former Chief of Army Staff from July 2015 to 2021 has taken the battle against insurgency to the field with enormous energy and resources as well as loss of field officers. “By your publication, our client has been ridiculed as a man without honour, dignity and incapable of representing Nigeria and portrayed as a fraudster/ dishonest person before Nigerians and the international community. “We hereby demand that you retract your publication with a public apology to our client within seven days of receiving this letter and a public apology to be published in two national dailies in Nigeria. “Take notice that if you fail, neglect and/or refuse to publish the apology within seven from today, we shall not hesitate to commence legal action against your organisation for defamation. “It is hoped that you would comply to avoid the unpleasantness of litigation and its attendant consequences.”

I Hope Terrorists Will Understand Nigeria’s Problem Is To Be Productive – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday met with serving corps members in his Daura country home of Katsina State, saying he hopes terrorists wreaking havoc will realise the nation’s problem is to be productive. Receiving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Buhari said regular interface and a broader vision of Nigeria as a whole will improve relationships, especially among the youths. He advised Nigerian youths to look beyond culture, ethnicity and religion in relating with one another, urging more travel, mingling, tolerance and negotiations to appreciate the rich diversity of the country. “I hope the rest of Nigerians that are making trouble, the terrorists and so on, will understand that Nigeria’s problem is people to be productive in terms of producing the food we eat, look at when we closed our borders for about two years, stopped the importation of rice, a lot of people had gone back to the land and they haven’t regretted it, we are now feeding ourselves and some rice being exported. So this is my objective and I am achieving it,” he stated. “My only problem is that there are still people who really benefit from killing other people and stealing and so on.” The President said the NYSC scheme broadened the horizon for many over the years and reduced the tensions and misunderstandings that exist between strangers. He asked the youth corps to keep expanding their views on life and opportunities, and avoid the limitations of culture, ethnicity, and religion by exploring technology to network, even beyond borders, ensure personal development, and a more competitive means of livelihood. “It’s very good for Nigerian seeing that Corps members posted to Maiduguri, Sokoto, or here in Katsina State. “Before NYSC, there were people of Lagos who had never gone out of the Lagos island, and then they found themselves in Maiduguri, or Sokoto or here, I think is very very good for Nigeria. “Nigeria is so vast culturally, ethnically and religiously, and we have to learn tolerance with each other. “So I congratulated you for coming here to the other end of Nigeria from wherever you come, I wish you a successful NYSC camp. “Now we are into a time if you cooperate with technology because government job is no longer there,” the President added.
