FREDRICK NWABUFO: Before we are all kidnapped

The first casualty of capricious election seasons in Nigeria is security. Governance is abandoned, and all efforts and expense are dissipated on party politics. Nigeria’s security insalubrity is deteriorating steeply as the 2023 elections close in. It is all reminiscent of the build-up to the 2015 elections when ubiquitous violence seized the country and the elections had to be postponed. Will it be again as it was before? Will it be plus ca change? Religious leaders – both Christians and Muslims – have become the latest spectacle of these gangs of death-dealers from the netherworld. On July 3, Udo Peter and Philemon Oboh, both priests of the Catholic church, were abducted by gunmen in Edo state. The gunmen reportedly kidnapped the Catholic priests on Benin-Auchi expressway. On July 4, the despoilers kidnapped Emmanuel Silas, a Catholic priest, in Kaduna state. Silas was reportedly kidnapped in Zambina, Kauru LGA of the state. On June 25, the ravagers killed Vitus Borogo, the chaplain of the Catholic Church in Kaduna Polytechnic. Borogo was reportedly killed at the Prison Farm, Kujama, along Kaduna-Kachia road. Weeks before this incident, Joseph Bako, a Catholic priest who was abducted in March from his residence at St John Catholic Church, Kudenda, Kaduna, was found dead. On June 29, Samuel Kanu, Methodist prelate, was kidnapped in Abia state. The clergyman gave a depressingly harrowing account of his ordeal on the turf of these enemies of humanity. A few other priests have been kidnapped and some killed. The kidnapping of priests appears methodic and targeted – just like the targeting and abduction of emirs and village heads by these ‘’bandits’’. Perhaps the motive is to instigate and amplify religious tension. Already, there have been suggestions that these assaults on existence fit into a grand sinister plot. But we must realise, at all times, that these criminals are the common enemy of all. They have killed and kidnapped Muslims, Christians, children, young and old. We must remain united against the devilment of those who want to cleave us apart. These blights on humanity have sacked communities in Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina and elsewhere. They have expropriated land and are extracting tolls from citizens. Security agents have not been spared. They have been abducted and some reportedly have paid ransoms to secure their freedom. The plot on security seems totally lost. A few days ago, a divisional police officer (DPO) who was leading his men to rescue kidnap victims in Nasarawa was himself stolen by these dare-devil freebooters. His abductors demanded five million naira before he would be freed. On June 26, Ochogwu Sunday, a divisional police officer in Birnin-Gwari, Kaduna was kidnapped. Other officers have either been kidnapped or killed. On Wednesday, Aminu Umar, an assistant commissioner of police, was felled by the crimson bullets of bandits in Katsina. And it persists. No let-up. No solution. No prognosis of hope. No respite. But utter confusion, hopelessness and helplessness. The land is violated and coursing with the blood of innocents. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has become of the hippodrome of bandits — where they put up defying performances and saunter away. For years, these criminal gangs have operated in the FCT – but the administration has always dismissed the potency of this threat. A few days ago, some residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were kidnapped on their farm. Kuje where the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) recently did a blitzkrieg has been in the throes of terror. Some communities in the area have been sacked by kidnappers, and many residents have abandoned their houses to seek shelter elsewhere. Other parts of the FCT like Ushafa, Bwari and Kubwa have also been visited by the pestilence. The blitz by ISWAP on the Abuja prison reveals the pregnability and rudderlessness of Nigeria’s seat of power. On Thursday, the US and the UK warned their citizens to be vigilant as crime would spike in the FCT. Kidnappings, armed robberies, drugs and all other iniquities have become the quotidian aspect of life in the nation’s capital. The FCT has never been this plagued. Terrorists, possibly, converged within the FCT for days undetected or detected but no response; planned an attack which lasted for hours, and rode into the night afterwards like knights. Deeply disturbing. And fatally embarrassing. What happened to the so-called game-changing Super Tucanos and other military hardware procured by the administration with a boast that the insurgents and bandits would be pulverised? So far, the government has spent N4 trillion on defence in seven years, yet there is no interlude of peace. President Muhammadu Buhari must go beyond the expression of shock, airy statements, and at least mitigate this challenge before the elections. I believe he would not want to be remembered as Petronius Maximus who technically surrendered Rome to the Vandals. By Fredrick Nwabufo; Nwabufo is a writer and journalist.

Ignore order to protest, IPOB counsels Igbo women

The Indigenous People of Biafra has advised the ‘Biafra women’ to ignore the order by its United States-based legal adviser, Mr Bruce Fein, calling for protest in Abuja. The advise followed the opinion of Mr Fein asking the IPOB women to embark on a street protest in Abuja. In a statement through its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, on Friday, the group disassociated itself from the order, which it called “unnecessary risk.” Powerful stated that Fein overstepped his bounds as the IPOB legal adviser in issuing such directive which would only expose the women to avoidable dangers and harm. He said, “Following the opinion of a USA-based IPOB legal adviser, Bruce Fein, asking the IPOB women to embark on a street protest in Abuja, we wish to completely disassociate from such opinion and instruct Biafran women to please ignore such opinion and avoid the unnecessary risk. “In the US, protests are part and a common feature of democracy and protesters enjoy protection from security agencies. But maybe unknown to him, in Nigeria, protesters are termed terrorists and shot on sight. To protest in Nigeria, particularly under the regime of President Muhammadu Buhari, is a suicide mission. “The IPOB will not advise Biafra women to hit the streets for any protest now because their safety is not guaranteed. We have lost a lot of innocent souls in the past protests and the international community watched without any intervention.” The group also stated that it had a well-equipped, perfectly organised, functional and rapid response leadership office through which such directive would be delivered other than through Sahara Reporters as claimed in their publication. It said it had done a lot of protests in the past and where innocent supporters were killed in cold blood by security agencies, insisting that it did not want a repeat of that. The statement read in part, “Therefore, we won’t allow more people to be sent to their untimely grave by wicked security operatives in Nigeria who run away from terrorists and Fulani bandits in the North but shamelessly show their might when it has to do with unarmed agitators of self-determination in the South. “Bruce Fein is our legal adviser and not the IPOB spokesperson. He does not quite understand that the version of democracy operational in Nigeria is different from the real democracy being practised in the US where he resides. “We understand the concern of Mr Bruce Fein, but we advise him to restrict himself strictly to providing legal services to our movement, and refrain from dishing out unapproved directives to Biafrans. “We, therefore, urge all Biafrans to please ignore such directive from Bruce Fein, and any other of such directives not emanating from the IPOB spokesman and communicated through our proper channels of information dissemination. “Directives for he IPOB women and Biafrans to embark on outdoor activities which include protest go through certain processes before such an exercise is implemented because we understand this part of the world better. “The IPOB is not a movement where anybody will wake up and start issuing directives. We are embedded on a very firm ideological based foundation and rooted in an unshakeable structure. Everyone knows that Bruce Fein is IPOB’s international legal adviser and not a decision making officer. “It would be of our collective best interest if Bruce Fein will concentrate on his job and desist from meddling into Biafraland related matters and areas outside the purview of his brief. “He is aware that we have some of the best lawyers here in Biafraland but they never issue orders or directives to the IPOB but proffer only legal advice when necessary. Bruce Fein is advised to stay off the IPOB administrative matters and concentrate on his legal representation.”

Governor Soludo Condemns Assault On Odumeje, Vows To Punish “unprofessional task force”

The Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has condemned the assault on Prophet Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere (Odumeje) by a member of the task force during the demolition of his Church on Thursday.   JOURNALIST101 had reported that Odumeje was physically assaulted by the task force when he protested the demolition of his church, Mountain of Holy Ghost Intervention Deliverance Ministries.   In a statement personally signed by Governor Soludo, he said the action of the task force member is “imperfect and unprofessional,” adding that he has instructed that the erring officer be handled in “accordance with the rules of public conduct which he roundly failed to uphold.”   Soludo while soliciting for the support of Ndi Anambra “in the fight to restore the dignity of Onitsha, and indeed the totality of our Homeland,” said that such unprofessional conduct “would never happen again.”   The statement reads:     Let me sincerely appreciate ndị Anambra for understanding with us as we take audacious steps towards making our Homeland Liveable and Prosperous. On this journey, imperfect steps will be taken, emotions will run wild and opinions will grow thick.   What is pertinent to note is that we shall remain undaunted, correct our imperfections, strive to put our emotions in check and aggregate opinions that are in the interest of our overall good.   Yesterday’s outing has evoked emotions, not against the decision of government, but the imperfect and unprofessional manner with which one of the task force members discharged his lawful duty. This is highly regretted, and would never happen again. I have instructed that the task force personnel involved in the manhandling of Prophet Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere (Odumeje) be treated in accordance with the rules of public conduct which he roundly failed to uphold.   We will continue to work to actualize the mandate you have given to us. We are obedient to APC, not any individual, political party — Gov Hope Uzodimma

The declarative statement made by Gov. Hope Uzodimma during the State APC Stakeholders meeting today may not be a child’s play but a strong determination to ensure that APC wins all elective offices from the state to the national level through members dedication and commitment. The Governor who said “WE ARE APC MEMBERS, WE ARE OBEDIENT TO APC NOT OBEDIENT TO ANY INDIVIDUAL OR ANY OTHER POLITICAL PARTY” only shows the preparedness of the party ahead of 2023 to remain united and unshaken as well as work in line with the party’s directive which does not only promote cohesion of ideas but leads to victory. Contrary to the aggressive held opinion by a movement influenced by depraved, treacherous, compromised politicians who are out to service their self ego and mystify governance especially when their selfish interests are not threatened, Gov. Hope Uzodimma remains unperturbed as he is sure that for such politicians they will only end up leaving their followers in distraught without actions. Rather than pledging obedience to an individual or party which is like a speed lane to the abyss, it is imperative that the APC becomes formidable for the party to win come 2023 and this assurance resonates hope that together APC will tower over every other party. There is no doubt that the stakeholders meeting has offered the party an opportunity to brainstorm and strategies for the victory of APC while maintaining a high level of confidence level ahead of the general election. The Governor has used the occasion to reiterate the need for all party member to remain loyal and unwavering even in the midst of provocation and unwarranted actions and pledged that APC is the only political party that rewards loyalty and work for the progress of all. Gov. Hope Uzodimma made it clear that the days of godfatherism are long gone in the party and anybody relying on any so called godfather to win election under the APC is an unserious politician as he reinstated that APC is a household name in the state and in the country and coupled with our achievements over the years, the people will vote massively for the party and her candidates. By this meeting, the state APC has hit the ground running in preparation for the electioneering campaign ahead of the September INEC time table for the commencement of campaign and it is obvious that the party is leaving no stone unturned as it is set to win the 2023 general election.

Ekiti Election: SDP’s Segun Oni Challenges APC’s Victory At Tribunal

The candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in the June 18 governorship election in Ekiti State, Mr. Segun Oni, has submitted his petition against the outcome of the election at the Election Petitions Tribunal in Ado the Ekiti state capital. Oni was accompanied to the secretariat of the Election Petitions Tribunal Thursday evening by his legal team and SDP state Chairman and chieftains to submit the over 1,000-page petition. The SDP candidate did not speak to the content of the petition but simply said that the move is to defend the sanctity of the system. But the leader of his legal team said the petition will challenge the eligibility of the Governor-elect, Mr Oyebanji to contest the election and question the actual victory attributed to him in the poll.

Sack Aregbesola now over repeated jailbreaks, HURIWA urges Buhari

Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, has said the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, must be sacked with immediate effect over his failure to put an end to the incessant attacks on prisons in the country. HURIWA’s position was contained in a statement on Thursday signed by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, where it condemned the jailbreaks under Aregbesola’s watch. The group stated that, in the last five years, there have been over 15 jailbreaks under the former Osun State governor while over 3,000 inmates have escaped from custody. The PUNCH had reported that terrorists attacked the Kuje Correctional Centre on Tuesday night, heavily armed with explosives, which led to the loss of lives. During the attack, the terrorists reportedly freed over 600 inmates, including 64 suspected Boko Haram members who were held in custody. HURIWA also urged the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to quit asking rhetorical questions on how the intelligence system of the country failed to detect Tuesday’s attack at Kuje prison in Abuja on social media. The group demanded the President immediately set up a judicial panel of inquiry on prison attacks in the country and ensure that such assaults on the entire security apparatus of Nigeria do not recur. The statement reads in part, “The spate of jailbreaks under President Muhammadu Buhari and Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, is alarming and condemnable. Even under then-President Goodluck Jonathan, who had no military experience or background, jailbreaks weren’t as rampant as what Nigerians see these days. “The frequent and recurring jailbreaks show the inefficiency of all those President Buhari appointed into office and his unwillingness to sack them show also that the President tacitly want the situation to continue to fester. “HURIWA demands the sacking of the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola; and his Defence counterpart, Bashir Magashi; for perpetual incompetence. We also call for a broad-based judicial panel of inquiry on prison breaks in Nigeria to be constituted.”

RACISM: Derek Chauvin sentenced to 20 years for violating Floyd’s rights

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for violating George Floyd’s civil rights. Chauvin, 46, pleaded guilty to the separate federal civil rights charges in December. He is already serving a 22-year state prison sentence for the on-duty murder of Mr Floyd, a 46-year-old black man. The two sentences will run concurrently and Chauvin will now be moved to a federal prison. But he will almost certainly spend more time behind bars following the sentencing. His sentence is due to be followed by five years of supervised release. “George’s life matters,” Mr Floyd’s brother, Philonese, said in court on Thursday as he asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence of 25 years. Chauvin, who is white, was convicted on murder and manslaughter charges in Minnesota for kneeling on Mr Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes. The killing – captured on a bystander’s phone camera – sparked global outrage and a wave of demonstrations against racial injustice and police use of force. The federal charges against Chauvin included two counts for depriving Floyd of his rights by kneeling on his neck as he was in handcuffs, and by failing to provide medical care during the May 2020 arrest. As part of the plea agreement, Chauvin also pleaded guilty to violating the rights of a then-14-year-old boy during another arrest that took place in 2017. According to the indictment, Chauvin held the boy by the throat, hit him in the head with a flashlight and held his knee on the boy’s neck and upper back while he was handcuffed and not resisting. Like Mr Floyd, the boy was black. Prosecutors said that unreleased bodycam footage showed Chauvin kneeling on the boy’s back for 17 minutes while he cried out for his mother. When Chauvin pleaded guilty, prosecutors asked that he serve his sentence concurrently with his murder sentence. He had been facing life in prison if we were to be convicted at a second criminal trial. In court yesterday, his lawyer requested a sentence of 20 years, saying that he showed respect for the legal process during his trial and is not at risk of repeating his offenses. Addressing the court for what is likely to be his final legal hearing for years, Chauvin said that the judge had a difficult decision, given the “politically charged environment,” and recognised that the court strives for fairness. Addressing Floyd’s children, some of whom were present in court, Chauvin said that he wishes them “all the best in their life” and that they have “excellent guidance in becoming good adults”. He did not apologise. “For your actions, you must be held accountable,” Judge Paul Magnuson said before handing down the sentence. He concluded the 35-minute hearing by wishing Chauvin “the very best in his future”.
