The Department of State Services ,DSS has debunked report that its personnel was among inmates who escaped from the Kuje Correctional Centre in the Federal Capital Territory,FCT that was attacked by terrorists, Tuesday. A statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya, said, “ The said report alleged that one of the escaping inmates who “claimed to be a DSS personnel was apprehended by NCS operatives near Kwali after a chase. The report further stated that the so called DSS operative also claimed to be “carrying out a special mission in the forest”. “The Service wishes to state that none of its personnel was involved in the escape episode. In fact, at the point of the attack on the prison, no DSS personnel was an inmate at the holding facility just as the claim of carrying out a special assignment was non-existent”.

Irish court jails impotent Nigerian man for accusing, attacking ex-girlfriend for his erectile dysfunction

An Irish court, Belfast Crown Court has sentenced a 52-year-old Nigerian man, Rotimi Adeyemo to eight years imprisonment for attacking and accusing girlfriend of causing his erectile dysfunction. Adeyemo, a father of six, from Carrickdale Gardens in Portadown, who appeared at Belfast Crown Court via a videolink was sentenced by Mr Justice Fowler on Wednesday. Fowler, in his ruling said Adeyemo wrongly accused his ex-partner for casting spell on him, thus attacking her in her residence. The judge further said that the undisclosed Adeyemo’s ex-lover sustained attacks which included strangulation, kicks, punches and the use of a knife. He said the domestic incident was further aggravated as it was carried out in the presence of the woman’s eight-year old daughter, who begged Adeyemo to stop the attack on her mother. He appeared at Belfast Crown Court via a videolink with Maghaberry, where his sentence was divided equally between prison and supervised licence. According to The Irish Times, he was initially charged with attempted murder, which he denied, but later pleaded guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm to his ex-partner with intent. She sustained multiple degree of injuries including a collapsed lung, bleeding to the brain and fractures to her ribs, nose and jaw and spent three days in the Royal Victoria Hospital. The court heard that prior to the attack, which occurred on August 3rd, 2019, the defendant and the accused had been in a relationship which had ended. Following this break-up, Adeyemo started dating one of the woman’s neighbours which caused rancor between the former couple. Crown barrister Barra McGrory QC said that two days before the attack, Adeyemo called at his ex’s home and accused her of casting a voodoo spell on him that had affected his potency. Saying it was the Crown’s case that this was a “key factor in the offending in terms of motivation”, Mr McGrory said the woman told Adeyemo there was no spell and he should go to see a doctor. The report further stated that at 7.15 am on August 3rd, Adeyemo called again at her house and, when he entered, launched an immediate attack which started by him grabbing her by the throat leaving her unable to speak or breathe. Adeyemo proceeded to carry her by the throat to the kitchen where the attack continued. Threatening to kill her, Adeyemo picked up a knife with his free hand which he used to try to cut her throat. The woman fought back in an effort to keep the knife from her throat and was put to the floor where the strangulation continued. At this point she managed to grab a plate and smash it over Adeyemo’s head that caused a bleeding wound, which she later told police caused Adeyemo to “completely lose it”. The attack continued in the back yard and witnessed by the woman’s daughter and neighbours who called the police, adding that the badly injured woman was also punched and kicked in the face, lost consciousness and came round while being tended to by police on her sofa. The aftermath of the attack was captured on police body-worn footage and was described as “harrowing” by Mr Justice Fowler. In this footage, the woman can be seen with serious facial injuries, while Adeyemo was recorded complaining she had put a spell on him to stop his penis working. While the woman was taken to hospital where she treated for multiple injuries, Adeyemo was arrested. During his interview, he told police his ex-partner was into witchcraft, reiterated the claim about the spell and said he drank half a bottle of Baileys before going to her house. The judge revealed that the incident had made the woman stop going out and had become isolated, installed security cameras so she could feel safe in her own home and now suffered from nightmares. Saying the attack occurred in the woman’s home where she should have felt safe and in the presence of a child, Fowler imposed an eight-year sentence and put in place a five-year restraining order.

I have withdrawn as Labour Party’s VP candidate, says Doyin Okupe

Doyin Okupe, a former senior special assistant on public affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has announced his withdrawal as the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP). In a tweet on Thursday, Okupe said a letter of his withdrawal has been sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In June, Okupe was named as the running mate of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of LP for the 2023 election. His candidacy was announced on June 17 — the deadline issued by the electoral umpire for parties to submit the list of their candidates for the 2023 general poll. Okupe had said he is “standing in” as the LP vice-presidential candidate to enable the party to form the “largest political coalition” to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “We need to be able to put together this coalition and the so-called third force is now alive, and it is forming, and it is important for us to ensure that all the stakeholders are carried along from the beginning to the end,” he had said. “So, because of this, I, Dr. Doyin Okupe, am standing in as the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party.” Okupe had also said discussions involved the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), but on Tuesday, he had announced that the talks on an alliance between LP and the NNPP are “dead”. In the post on his social media handles on Thursday, Okupe said a replacement will be announced by the party’s national chairman soon. “This afternoon, I submitted my withdrawal letter from the position of the Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party to INEC,” the post reads. “A replacement will be announced by [the] national chairman of [the] party shortly. I feel greatly blessed to have been part of the foundation of success for the LP.”

Five reasons why Boris Johnson resigned as UK Prime Minister

The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resigned his office on Thursday, ending an unprecedented political crisis over his future that has paralyzed Britain’s government. Johnson made the official announcement at Downing Street on Thursday. He said he will continue to serve until a new leader emerges. The former PM has faced a barrage of criticism from all sides over his conduct and that of some members of his government. The climax of his crisis included illegal, Covid-19 lockdown-breaking parties thrown in his Downing Street offices for which he and others were fined. Numerous other scandals include accusations of using donor money inappropriately to pay for a refurbishment of his Downing Street home and ordering MPs to vote in such a way that would protect a colleague who had breached lobbying rules. However, there are reasons that accumulated the downfall of the former PM failed in his leadership style. The Chris Pincher affair On Wednesday 29 June, a Member of Parliament, Chris Pincher, who was at that time the Conservative deputy chief whip, went to a private members’ club in London. In his words, he “drank far too much” and “embarrassed himself”. Downing Street disclosed that Johnson did not pay attention to “specific allegations” about Pincher before appointing him as deputy chief whip in February. On 4 July, the BBC reported Johnson had been aware of a formal complaint. The next day, a former civil servant – Lord McDonald – said the prime minister had been told of the complaint in person. Johnson then admitted he had been told in 2019, and apologised for appointing Pincher as deputy chief whip. Partygate In April 2022, the former prime minister was fined for breaking lockdown rules, after attending a gathering on his birthday in June 2020. He also apologised for going to a “bring your own booze” party in the Downing Street garden during the first lockdown. More widely, the Metropolitan Police issued 126 fines to 83 people for breaking lockdown rules in Downing Street and Whitehall. And a report by, a senior civil servant, Sue Gray described a series of social events by political staff that broke lockdown rules. “The senior leadership at the centre, both political and official, must bear responsibility for this culture,” she wrote. Last December, Johnson told the Commons that “all guidance was followed completely in No 10”. Then, he is currently being probed by a Commons committee over whether he intentionally misled Parliament. The cost of living crisis – and a tax rise Inflation has risen sharply in 2022, to the current rate of 9.1%. Many of the inflation’s reasons are were not directly under Johnson’s control. A good example is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which has led to rises in oil prices and the cost of food. And, while the government has taken some steps – for example, by cutting fuel duty by 5p per litre – it also went ahead with a tax rise in April. National Insurance went up by 1.25 pence in the pound. The government said the tax increase would pay for health and social care, and changes that kicked in this week moderated the burden – but anyone earning more than £34,000 a year will still pay more. “In the middle of the worst cost of living crisis for decades,” said Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer in April, “the government chooses to increase taxes on working people”. Owen Paterson vs Boris Johnson In October 2021, a House of Commons committee recommended a 30-day suspension for then-Conservative MP Owen Paterson. The committee said he broke lobbying rules, to try to benefit companies who paid him. But the Conservatives – led by the prime minister – voted to pause his suspension, and set up a new committee to look at how investigations were carried out. After an uproar, Paterson ended up resigning. Johnson later admitted he had “crashed the car” in his handling of the case. Unclear visions and ideas Boris Johnson won his thumping majority on the back of a clear, easy-to-follow policy – Get Brexit Done. But since then, his critics said, there was a lack of focus and ideas in Downing Street. His ex-adviser turned chief critic, Dominic Cummings, repeatedly accused him of being an out-of-control shopping trolley, veering from position to position. Others questioned the prime minister’s philosophy – or, indeed, if he had one. In June, Conservative MP and former minister Jeremy Hunt accused Johnson of lacking “integrity, competence, and vision”. Hunt was speaking before a confidence vote, which ex-PM won – but the complaints were getting louder. The by-election defeats kept coming. After the latest, Johnson said he would not undergo a “psychological transformation”. But that, now, is not the concern of Conservative MPs. They have spoken, and the prime minister is gone.

Soludo Denies Budget Padding In Anambra

Governor Charles Soludo has denied the reports alleging ‘budget-padding’ in the state In a statement by his press secretary, Christian Aburime, Soludo described the reports as false. According to him, the peddlers were those who have lost out in milking the state treasury. “These are the handwork of losers and detractors. The misinformation should evoke pity for the purveyors in the light of the manifest ignorance boldly couriered in every paragraph of the hasty piece of distraction. “Bad as it is, no credible reporter has signed this off, establishing it for what it is; lazy propaganda,” he said. He said for clarity, the government is not oblivious of the diversionary antics of those whose lucrative criminal enterprise is being smoked out by the government’s renewed fight against all forms of criminality in the state. “We want to make the state a livable and prosperous smart mega city by confronting head-on the infrastructural decay, such as in the area of roads that is clearly in deplorable situation” he said . According to him, the government has declared a state-of-emergency on Anambra roads and infrastructure. The governor said that giving priority to infrastructure development, the government has allocated about 64 per cent of the capital budget and an ambitious target of flagging off at least 220km of roads as soon as rain abates. “With this ambitious program and knowing fully, that failure does not exist in our determined minds, the detractors are at loss and are raising the battle cry with the sole aim of trying to scuttle our determination with all manners of blackmail. “They claimed that the commissioner for works refused to appear before the state Assembly to defend the budget. This again is the figment of the imagination of the unknown writers with the intent of creating rancor between the executive and the members of the House of Assembly. “The Commissioner for Works and infrastructure was, indeed, the first commissioner to appear before the House Committee on the first day of the budget defense exercise being 29th of June, 2022 at about 10.00AM. This is on record and was captured by the Press.” he added.

Ekweremadu: Kidney Donor Not Underage, Says UK Court

The Westminster Magistrates Court, the United Kingdom on Thursday accepted that the kidney donor in the case of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice is not a minor. Ekweremadu and his wife were arrested by the British police on June 23 on allegations of human trafficking and organ harvesting that violate the country’s Modern Slavery Act. The police authorities had accused the lawmaker of conspiring to bring a child to the United Kingdom for organ harvesting, saying the victim was a 15-year-old boy.   During the continuation of the case, the prosecution accepted that he is 21 years old, contrary to earlier claims that he is 15 years old. Earlier in the day, Channels Television reported the arrival of Ekweremadu and his at West Minister Magistrates Court for the continuation of their trial. Giving an update from the court’s premises on Thursday, Channels Television’s correspondent, Juliana Olayinka, said the court accepted that the kidney donor in Ekweremadu’s case is not a minor. She said the prosecution has accepted that he is 21years old. The court thereafter fixed August 4 as the date for the next hearing. Just yesterday, the Federal High Court Abuja ordered the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to transmit the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the biodata information of an alleged Minor to the Attorney General of the Federation for onward transmission to the UK to aid Ekweremadu’s trial. The lawmaker’s lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, on July 27 urged Justice Inyang Ekwo to order the release of certain official documents of Ukpo domiciled with NIMC, Nigerian Immigration Service, and Stanbic-IBTC Bank for the purpose of effectively defending Ekweremadu in the UK.

I’m sad to give up best job in the world’ — Boris Johnson officially resigns as UK prime minister

Boris Johnson, UK prime minister, has resigned from his position. There have been calls for Johnson’s resignation following the latest scandal over his handling of the concerns raised about Chris Pincher, deputy chief whip, over allegations of sexual misconduct. Earlier in the year, Johnson appointed Pincher — who has now resigned over claims that he groped two men at a private members’ club — as the deputy chief whip, despite the allegations. Speaking on Thursday outside No. 10 Downing St., Johnson said it is clearly the will of his party that he should resign and there should be a new leader.   “I’ve agreed with Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the backbench MPs that the process of choosing that new leader should begin now and the timetable will be announced next week. I’ve of today appointed a cabinet to serve as I will until a new leader is in place,” he said. “The reason I have fought so hard in the last few days to continue to deliver that mandate in person was not just because I wanted to do so, but because I felt it was my job, my duty, my obligation to you to continue to do what we promised in 2019.” Johnson said he had tried to convince his colleagues that it will be “eccentric” to change governments, adding that he regrets “not having been successful in those arguments”.   “Of course, it’s painful not to be able to see through so many ideas and projects myself. Our brilliant and Darwinian system will produce another leader equally committed to taking this country forward through tough times, not just helping families to get through it, but changing and improving the way we do things. Cutting the burden of businesses and families, And yes, cutting taxes,” he said. “To that new leader, I say I will give you as much support as I can. And to you, the British public, I believe there will be many people who are relieved or disappointed. I want you to know how sad I am to be giving up the best job in the world.” A number of ministers had earlier resigned from the government citing a loss of trust in Johnson.
