Kaduna-Abuja Train Attack Masterminds Behind Kuje Prison Invasion – Mediator

The terrorists that attacked and abducted passengers of a Kaduna-bound train are responsible for Kuje Prison attack, Mallam Tukur Mamu, Media Consultant and publisher, has said. Mamu, who has been in talks with the terrorists, stated this in a statement issued in Kaduna on Wednesday. Mamu said before the attack, he shared intelligence with the authorities but they failed to act. “I can confirm without doubt that the Kuje Correctional Centre attack was executed and coordinated by the same group that attacked the Abuja-Kaduna bound train, because they gave indications of imminent attacks to that effect which I shared.” “For the records, they requested for the release of 51 of their members. But through power of dialogue and engagement, I single handedly scaled that number to only 10 and communicated with audio backing the development to the relevant authorities. “There was unnecessary delay on giving them even a precise feedback by the government and now they have not only succeeded in carrying out another successful attack that indicts the nature of our intelligence and capacity to respond promptly but have also succeeded in releasing dozens of their members which would have been averted if action had been taken to give them only 10 and secure the release of the train victims. “In all this risky, painful and frustrating engagement which government is yet to acknowledge and appreciate I have more than 100 documented audios that I shared with the relevant authorities. For the purpose of this important press release and to authenticate my claims, I will also share 4 of the latest audios,” he said. Mamu negotiated the release of 11 train attack victims.

Lagos poll: PDP’s candidate dumps Rhodes-Vivour, picks Funke Akindele as running mate

BARRING any last minute change, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State, Dr. Olajide Adeniran, popularly known as Jandor, may pick Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, as his running mate. Vanguard was told by a reliable source that Jandor settled for Funke Akindele after unveiling her to party chieftains at a meeting held in Lagos. A top PDP leader, who spoke to Vanguard in confidence, said Jandor refused the choice of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour to be his running mate. The source said: “He (Jandor) introduced her before elders of the party and local government chairman this week. “You know, this thing has limitation because of the new Electoral Act (amended) which says the candidate has the right to choose his running mate, but he must consult with leaders and elders of the party. “Since he refused the choice of Rhodes-Vivour, there is nothing we can do about it. He has since settled for Funke Akindele. “I have never heard of her, but she was presented before the elders of the party. I understand she is a lawyer and an actress. “The candidate will announce the choice of Funke Akindele soon.” Recall that the PDP chairmen of the 20 local governments in the state had endorsed Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour as the deputy governorship candidate. “The Chairmen noted that Rhodes-Vivour would bring his wealth of knowledge and expertise to bear in effectively governing Lagos, especially given several years of misgovernance by the All Progressives Congress, APC.” The PDP council Chairmen said in a signed letter that “as the Chairmen and Managers of our great Party, the PDP in Lagos State, we consider it to be well within our rights and obligations to play a major – nay, a leading – role in guiding our Party in the choice of its flagbearers for elective positions at various levels in the state as we begin the countdown to the 2023 general elections.” The Chairmen further noted that several electoral benefits and criteria were considered before their endorsement. Some of the criteria listed were “that the deputy governorship candidate should be a young person who can also be relied upon in terms of galvanizing electoral value across the length and breadth of the state.” The Chairmen stated that “we hereby endorse Architect Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (fondly known as GRV among his teeming admirers), as the absolute best option among those that have indicated their interest in becoming the deputy-governorship candidate of our great Party in the 2023 polls.”

Imo Has The Least PVC Registrants, Says REC

Outgoing Resident Electoral Commissioner in Imo State, Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu, has said that Imo state has the least number of registrants in the ongoing voters registration exercise. Ezeonu will be bowing out as Imo REC. He is one of 20 resident electoral commissioners whose tenure would end by August. Speaking at a valedictory news briefing in Owerri, the state capital, Ezeonu said though Imo still parades the least number of newly registered voters, there has been tremendous improvement in turnout of registrants in the State. According to him in the first two quarters of the exercise which lasted from June to December 2021, the State registered a total of 16,511 out of which 7,145 (43.3%) were found to be invalid, meaning that they had registered previously (sometime between 2011 and 2018), leaving with a balance of 9,366 valid registration. He said, “The last data published on 27th June show that the total number of registrants in the State is now 97,371. This figure is just for new registrants alone and excludes those who have applied for review, transfer of polling units or replacement of Permanent Voters Card (PVC).” He appealed to those who have registered before not to do so again, adding that contrary to rumours, the PVC does not expire. “If you have lost your PVC, be honest enough to say so rather than attempting a fresh registration as that will be fruitless.:” He also reminded the electorates that it is an electoral offence to attempt multiple registration. Ezeonu, who lauded the staff of the commission and the media for the cooperation rendered to him, asked them to give the sane cooperation to his successor.

PDP crisis deepens as Wike insists Ayu must go, cautions against undermining Fayose, Ortom, others

The crisis in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may not come to an end soon as Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, is insisting on immediate resignation of the National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu and a stop to the plot to undermine his close allies like the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose and others.   Governor Wike was said to have fumed yesterday’s evening when information reached him that Senator Ayu was allegedly planning to use his position as national chairman to undermine the likes of Fayose, Ortom and others in their various States. The governor is also said to be insisting that Senator Ayu must resign in line with what he said was agreed upon before he (Ayu) was made the national chairman. A close ally of the Rivers State Governor told Vanguard that even though the governor is not against dialogue, he will not have any one-on-one meetingç with the PDP Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. The Governor’s ally, who preferred anonymity confirmed to Vanguard that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, Governor Ortom, Fayose, former Governor of Gombe, Ibrahim Dankwambo and former Governor of Cross River, Donald Duke have been named as members of Governor Wike’s strategy team. “The strategy team will be responsible for holding talks with Atiku and his men. “Also, Governor is insisting that Ayu must step down from his position as national chairman since the party has picked its presidential candidate from the North. “Wike is of the opinion that the North cannot have both the presidential candidate of the PDP and national chairman at the same time. “He is also watching events in some State chapters of the party, especially where his allies are involved. He told some of his men yesterday that should anything be done to undermine the interest of his allies because of their support for him, even his team will no longer be available for any peace talks. “For instance, look at what they did Ekiti during the governorship election. Look at how those at Wadata abandoned the party in Ekiti just because of Fayose’s support for Governor Wike. He (Wike) is has said that he will no longer sit back and allow any of his allies to be undermined under any guise,” he said.

I’m disappointed with our intelligence system, says Buhari on Kuje prison attack

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed disappointment over the manner Kuje prison in the federal capital territory (FCT) was attacked by suspected Boko Haram insurgents. The president ascribed the situation to a failure of intelligence when he visited the medium security custodial centre on Wednesday. Buhari queried why terrorists are able to successfully “attack a security installation and get away with it”. Following his arrival at the facility, the president was briefed about the attack by Shuaib Belgore, permanent secretary, ministry of interior, and Haliru Nababa, the controller general of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, said Buhari expressed shock at the scale and audacity of the attack. “How did the defences at the prison fail to prevent the attack? How many personnel did you have on duty? How many of them were armed?” the president was quoted as asking the prison officials. Buhari was also said to have inquired about the number of guards on the watchtower and the functionality of the closed-circuit television (CCTV ) cameras in the facility. Speaking with journalists after the inspection, Buhari said: “I am disappointed with the intelligence system. “How can terrorists organise, have weapons, attack a security installation and get away with it?” The president added that he is expecting “a comprehensive report” on the incident. Buhari is expected to travel to Dakar, Senegal, later today to participate in the International Development Association (IDA) for Africa summit.

salaries: Abia varsity lecturers are dying, says ASUU Chairperson

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, UnpaidAbia State University, Uturu branch, has pleaded with the state Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, and stakeholders in the state to come to their rescue over ten months of unpaid salaries. In a press statement made available to The PUNCH, its Chairperson, Comrade Victor Nkemdirim, the union urged the government to intervene and pay the said salaries. According to him, our members are deeply pained because of the sorry state we have found ourselves in. “All we are asking for is the prompt and regular release of the subvention to the university as it is in the appropriation law of the state. At this point, we call on our colleague, His Excellency, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu PhD to listen to the cries from his constituency. “The peculiar situation where Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from student’s school fees would be used to pay salaries of staff. This is a case of self-destruction where the managers, instead of forcing the government to release subvention to the university pretends that IGR can solve the litany of problems in the University. What deceit! “It is important to note and to bring to the attention of the public the pathetic condition afflicting lecturer’s in ABSU. We have never had it so rough and traumatic. The staff of ABSU is wondering what they did to earn such a fate/punishment. Who did we offend? “For the avoidance of doubt, we are owed 10 long, tedious and agonizing months of arrears of salaries. The last salary payment received was that of September 2021. “The non-implementation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, resulting in arrears of 18 months, amounting to close to 1 billion nairas, withheld cooperative and loan deductions, non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) since 2009 which most state universities are enjoying, no pension fund and many more. “We wish to draw the attention of the students, parents, and the general public to the fact that 99% of the lecturer, apart from maybe the managers have run out of stock of begging strategies. “Most colleagues are hospitalized, there are some who could not even afford to go to patent medicine shops, some neither have access to their routine drugs nor eat one full square meal a day. “Our children have been sent out of school, landlords are on us as a result of expired rents, our aged parents and other dependants have lost hopes. It’s that bad. “On a note of appreciation, we thank His Excellency, the Governor of the state for the timely and effective response to the security challenges within and around the University community. “We hope that the robust/active security architecture will arrest the situation to safeguard the lives and properties of both members of the University community and other innocent road users”.

Sylva Blames Abuja Fuel Queues On Marketers, Absolves FG

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, on Wednesday, absolved the Federal Government of any blame for the fuel queues in the nation’s capital, saying that marketers are responsible. Sylva, who addressed State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting, said the NNPC is in very good supply of the product. “Frankly, it is not a supply issue, as you can also confirm. So it’s not from us. But you know When you have an arbitrage opportunity, people will tend to take advantage of it. These are some of the fallouts of the subsidy regime,” Sylva said. “If you look at it, there are no queues when you leave Abuja, in most places, only in the Abuja, metropolis, you continue to have these queues. So is it that there is less applied to Abuja, than to the rest of the country? It is not so. It is because if you go out of Abuja, they can afford to probably sell at higher prices. “And I’m sure a lot of you must be buying at higher prices, but within Abuja, because of the watchful eye of the federal government, they cannot sell at those prices. So it’s not a very attractive market for them. I think these are all things that we might have to be dealing with for a while until we’re able to fully deregulate. “But that actually is a problem it’s not a supply problem, the country is well supplied as it is. NNPC has a very good supply. So it is not a problem for us, but it is the marketers. But we are engaging the marketers and will continue to engage them. In fact, before now NATO said, Oh, because diesel prices were now going up. And of course, you know that diesel is deregulated already.” Although he promised continued talks with them, the minister does not guarantee that the fuel queues will dissipate any time soon.

Northern Yoruba Community endorses El-Rufai as Tinubu’s running mate

Corps Members Raped At Gunpoint In Akwa Ibom

Some female members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Akwa Ibom State have been raped. They were assaulted when gunmen invaded a Corpers’ lodge in Uyo, the state capital. It was gathered that the gunmen invaded the area on tricycles at about 1am and carted away valuables, including laptops, cell phones and money. Narrating the incident, one of the corps members, said, “They arrived on a tricycle, popularly called Keke and immediately started operation. They beamed high intensity torchlight everywhere and pounced on every door with heavy iron and threatened to shoot us if we failed to cooperate”. A female corps member, who preferred to remain unnamed, said her phones, laptop and money were taken away from her by force after the hoodlums entered her room through the back door. “You know at that period of the night, most of us females, we used to sleep naked; the attack caught us unprepared. They beamed the torch through the window and threatened to shoot if the door is not quickly opened. “I have never heard of this anywhere in Nigeria, even in the North, where insecurity is at the peak, that Corpers could be deliberately targetted, raped and robbed by criminals at gun point. “Is it because we are not from Akwa Ibom that no one could hear our shouts and come to save us?” She lamented. Also speaking, Mr Nsikak Ibanga, a night guard at the State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists which is located opposite the corpers lodge said, “I raised alarm by hitting the supporting pillars holding the reconstructed NUJ auditorium. The sound reverberated across the whole area but no response.” Another neighbour, Bassey Offiong, stated, “When I heard the attack and the outcry of the corpers, I quickly reached out to the Police at Ikot Akpanabia Command, which is very close here, but they arrived a little late, after the criminals had finished and left with their tricycle.” Youth Leader of the area, Godwin Okpo, blamed the criminal activities in the community on the collapse of internal security organized by the residents. “I used to go round from house to house to collect monetary contributions for the night vigilante group to secure the area at night, but suddenly they started accusing me of embezzling their money, so there was nothing I could do again. “When I heard the incident, I moved to the place but since I was alone, there was nothing I could do,” he stated. When the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko Macdon, was contacted, he said he was yet to be fully briefed on the incident. “I don’t have any information about the incident but I will find out and get across to you,” he said. He had not done so as of the time of filing this report.
