Terrorists Kill 3, Abduct Dozens In Katsina Communities

Terrorists in their numbers, armed with sophisticated weapons, have again attacked Dantsauni village in Batagarawa Local Government Area of Kâtsina State where they killed three people. One of the deceased persons was identified as Abdulrashid Abba Manna, a Katsina resident, who went to farm in the morning at Dantsauni village but was trapped and killed by the terrorists. This came barely three days after bandits attacked surrounding communities of Babbar Ruga, Kwarin Maikotso and Kore villages where they operated unchallenged and killed two people with eight others abducted. Dantsauni village is only one kilometre away from Babbar Ruga village. During the attack, the terrorists also abducted dozens of people including women and children while hundreds of people were seen running towards the ancient city of Katsina for their dear lives. An eyewitness account revealed that the terrorists also fired some shots along Katsina Ring Road which is very close to the city. Residents of the area said no security personnel was seen during the over 45 minute operation by the terrorists which happened in broad daylight. When contacted, the police spokesman in Katsina, SP Gambo Isah, who confirmed the attack said one person was killed and two others injured.

Ekweremadu Returns To Custody As Court Adjourns Trial To Oct 31

Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to custody as his trial on alleged human trafficking and organ harvesting was adjourned to October 31. Ekweremadu first appeared before the Uxbridge magistrates’ court in London, United Kingdom, where he denied all the charges against him. Both the lawmaker and his wife were denied bail and remanded in custody while the case was adjourned to July 7 and later August 4, 2022. But in a new twist, Beatrice, Ekweremadu’s wife, was granted bail under strict conditions, following an application filed by the defendant counsel. The bail was granted on July 22, 2022. However, a similar bail application for Ekweremadu was denied by the court. For the record, at the last sitting, the court ruled that the victim in this case is no longer a minor, meanwhile only Ekweremadu is in custody while his wife had been granted bail. Adamu Bulkachuwa, Senate committee chairman on foreign affairs, was in court to show support for Ekweremadu.

N5m Fine: We Acted In Public Interest, Trust TV Replies NBC

Following the N5 million fine slammed on Trust TV over a documentary titled “Nigeria’s Banditry: The Inside Story”, the television station has replied the The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) that it acted in public interest. NBC had said the fine was imposed on Trust TV because the broadcast of the said documentary contravened sections of the National Broadcasting Code. In a statement, the management of Media Trust Group said “As a television station, we believe we were acting in the public interest by shedding light on the thorny issue of banditry and how it is affecting millions of citizens of our country.” The management said it was studying the commission’s action and weighing our options. “The documentary traces the root of the communal tensions and systemic inadequacies, which led to the armed conflict that is setting the stage for another grand humanitarian crisis in Nigeria. “It presents insights into the intersection of injustice, ethnicity and bad governance as drivers of the conflict. “It also aggregates voices of experts and key actors towards finding solutions, including those of the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Senator Saidu Mohammed Dansadau, who hails from one of the worst hit communities in Zamfara State.” The statement added that other experts who featured in the documentary include scholars like Professor Abubakar Saddique of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and Dr. Murtala Ahmed Rufai of the Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, who have both studied the subject of banditry for a long period. The documentary also brought to the fore the horrifying stories of victims of banditry.

FCT Security: FG Approves N2.6b For Purchase Of Vehicles, Equipment

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the procurement of utility vehicles, security gadgets, and accessories to support security agencies operating within the FCT at the sum of N1.835 billion. Giving details of the purchase after the FEC meeting on Wednesday, the Minister of the FCT, Mohammed Bello, disclosed that 60 utility vehicles with communication gadgets will be bought at that amount and delivered within two months. Additionally, the FCT minister noted that the Council approved the supply of various security gadgets and accessories to support security agencies in the nation’s capital at a total sum of N847.1 million. The two procurements amount to N2.68 billion.   In the same vein, the Council also confirmed the purchase of vehicles worth N1.4 billion for the Niger Republic. Finance, Budget, and National Planning Minister, Zainab Ahmed, told the press that President Muhammadu Buhari approved the purchase which is part of efforts to help the Niger Republic boost its fight against insecurity. She explained that the President, whose actions she cannot question, has the right to make his own assessment of situations and give directives accordingly. According to her, the financial support, primarily for the purpose of enhancing capacity to protect their territory, is based on a request by the Nigerien Government and is also in the best interest of the country. Her comment came hours after independent journalist, David Hundeyin, posted the photo of a budget office document detailing the payment, questioning why the government’s move. The confirmation from the Federal Government has, however, triggered a wave of condemnation from Nigerians with many faulting the move.

China Begins Major Taiwan Military Drills After Pelosi Visit

China’s largest-ever military exercises encircling Taiwan kicked off Thursday, in a show of force straddling vital international shipping lanes after a visit to the island by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi left Taiwan Wednesday after a trip that defied a series of stark threats from Beijing, which views the self-ruled island as its territory. Pelosi was the highest-profile elected US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, and said her trip made it “unequivocally clear” that the United States would not abandon a democratic ally. It sparked a furious reaction from Beijing, which vowed “punishment” and announced military drills in the seas around Taiwan — some of the world’s busiest waterways. The exercises, which began around 12 pm (0400 GMT), involve “live-firing”, according to state media. “Six major areas around the island have been selected for this actual combat exercise and during this period, relevant ships and aircraft should not enter the relevant waters and airspaces,” state broadcaster CCTV reported.   AFP journalists in the border island of Pingtan saw several small projectiles flying into the sky followed by plumes of white smoke and loud booming sounds. AFP was not in a position to identify the projectiles, which were fired from the proximity of nearby military installations, nor their precise direction. The exercises are taking place in multiple zones around Taiwan — at some points within just 20 kilometres (12 miles) of the shore — and will conclude at midday on Sunday. Taiwan’s defence ministry said it was closely watching the drills. “The Ministry of National Defence stresses that it will uphold the principle of preparing for war without seeking war, and with an attitude of not escalating conflict and causing disputes,” it said in a statement. Beijing’s nationalist state-run tabloid Global Times said, citing military analysts, that the exercises were “unprecedented” and that missiles would fly over Taiwan for the first time. “This is the first time the PLA will launch live long-range artillery across” the Taiwan Strait, the newspaper said using the Chinese military’s formal name, the People’s Liberation Army. The Group of Seven industrialised nations has condemned the drills, saying in a statement there was “no justification to use a visit as pretext for aggressive military activity in the Taiwan Strait”. ‘Preparation For Actual Combat’ Taiwan’s Maritime and Port Bureau issued warnings on Wednesday to ships to avoid the areas being used for the Chinese drills. The Taiwanese cabinet said the drills would disrupt 18 international routes passing through its flight information region (FIR). Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific said it had ordered its aircraft to “avoid going through the designated airspace zones around the Taiwan region”. The manoeuvres will take place along some of the busiest shipping routes on the planet, used to supply vital semiconductors and electronic equipment produced in East Asian factory hubs to global markets. Beijing has defended the drills as “necessary and just”, pinning the blame for the escalation on the United States and its allies. “In the current struggle surrounding Pelosi’s Taiwan visit, the United States are the provocateurs, China is the victim,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular briefing Wednesday. A Chinese military source also told AFP the exercises would be staged “in preparation for actual combat”. “If the Taiwanese forces come into contact with the PLA on purpose and accidentally fire a gun, the PLA will take stern countermeasures, and all the consequences will be borne by the Taiwanese side,” the source said. ‘Some Limits’ Taiwan’s 23 million people have long lived with the possibility of an invasion, but that threat has intensified under President Xi Jinping, China’s most assertive ruler in a generation. The island is once again a flashpoint between the United States and a Chinese leadership keen to project strength ahead of a crucial ruling party meeting this autumn at which Xi is expected to be given an unprecedented third term. On the mainland, at what is said to be China’s closest point to Taiwan, AFP saw a batch of five military helicopters flying at a relatively low altitude near a popular tourist spot. “China’s announced military exercises represent a clear escalation from the existing baseline of Chinese military activities around Taiwan and from the last Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1995-1996,” said Amanda Hsiao, senior analyst for China at the International Crisis Group. “Beijing is signalling that it rejects Taiwan’s sovereignty.” Nevertheless, analysts have told AFP that China is not aiming to escalate the situation beyond its control — at least for now. Titus Chen, an associate professor of political science at the National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan, said: “The last thing Xi wants is an accidental war.” AFP

Nigeria’s budget deficit hits N30.58tn in seven years

Budget deficit has risen to at least N30.58tn in the last seven years. This is according to data from budget implementation reports for the third and fourth quarters of 2015; the four quarters of 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020; the first three quarters of 2021; and the first four months of 2022. According to Investopedia, a budget deficit occurs when expenses exceed revenue. An analysis of the reports on the Budget Office of Nigeria’s website revealed that Buhari’s administration had spent at least N54.98tn on budget implementation since its inception but has only financed this spending with N24.39tn, leaving a deficit of N30.58tn. A breakdown of some of the expenses revealed that the present administration had spent at least N23.66tn on personnel costs, pensions, overhead costs, presidential amnesty programme, other service-wide votes, and special interventions. A minimum of N14.13tn has been spent servicing domestic and foreign debts, and at least N10.47tn has been spent on capital expenditure. According to the reports, this deficit financing has been largely financed by government borrowing. The budget implementation report for Q4, 2015 said, “The FGN has arranged to raise short-term credit from the CBN through the mechanism of Ways and Means subject to a ceiling of 12.5 per cent of FGN’s revenue. “This amount will be retired and therefore not considered as new borrowing outside the borrowing approved to finance the budget deficit. However, due to current fiscal challenges, the CBN had agreed to increase the Ways and Means advances threshold hence the FGN’s ability to raise N615.96bn from this source.” Since allowance for raising the ceiling was made, total borrowing from the CBN has hit N19.01tn in April 2022 from N648.26bn as of June 2015. Also, the nation’s total debt profile hit N41.06tn as of March 2022 from N12.12tn, according to the Debt Management Office. A document titled ‘Public Consultation on the Draft 2023 – 2025 MTFF/FSP’ presented by the Minister of Finance, Budget & National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, said, “Revenue generation remains the major fiscal constraint of the federation. The systemic resource mobilization problem has been compounded by recent economic recessions.” Recently, the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria raised concerns over the nation’s debt sustainability. It said the Federal Government’s debt profile was worrying and noted that there was a need for it to urgently diversify its revenue base. Commenting on the story, economists stated that a high deficit was not good for the economy and might cause inflation, recession, and slow down growth. Speaking to our correspondent, an economic expert and seasoned academic at the University of Uyo, Professor Akpan Ekpo, said, “This shows that expenditure has eclipsed the revenue, because they have to borrow, which is why there is a deficit. “They can’t raise enough domestic resources to finance spending. That gap is deficit. Talking about GDP, by the rules, it should not be more than a certain percentage of GDP, but it has exceeded that. And when you borrow, you have expectations of borrowing because if you are not transparent, we don’t know what you are borrowing for. “If you are borrowing to finance recurrent and overhead, it is not good for the economy. If you borrow to finance capital projects, in the long run, even if you have a deficit, it will have a positive multiplier effect. The deficit, if it is used to finance recurrent, is problematic to the economy. “One way of solving that is to raise more of domestic revenue or cut down on expenditure that is not needed, especially, the cost of governance. There is a need to check the expenditure profile and cut down on it. Or we could do expenditure switching, where unimportant items are switched with important items. “We are spending more than we can raise resources and we are not spending it on hard infrastructure.” Associate professor of Economics at the Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, Olalekan Aworinde, added that the deficit was being financed by either government borrowing, sales of government properties, or printing money. According to him, any of these options had implications for the economy. He stated, “Loans can be good and can be bad. A loan is good if it is used for productive expenditure, but if it is used for recurrent expenditure or consumption expenditure, this is not bringing back any returns. “If the component of this deficit is majorly recurrent expenditures, it shows that we are unlikely to have any growth. There isn’t going to be any revenue coming out from there. The implication of this is that we are likely going to have stunted growth. Stunted growth in the sense that we are not likely going to have an increase in the total values of goods and services that are produced in the country. “If care is not taken, we are likely going to slide into recession.” He added that financing the deficit through sales of government properties would mean the government was reducing its asset base, which did not speak well for the economy.

Adamu: We won’t be satisfied securing 25% of votes — APC must win all states

Abdullahi Adamu, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has asked party members to close ranks and work as a team to ensure the party’s victory in the 2023 elections. Adamu made the call while speaking with journalists after inaugurating an eight-member Abia reconciliation committee. Adamu said the party will not be satisfied with just 25 percent of votes cast in the general election. “We have to do some works and forget some of the prejudices and stand together,” Adamu said. “We don’t want anybody to come here after the elections and start crying and laying blames on us for our failures. “I will not listen to that. This is the time to unite, this is the time to work for unity, if we do, God will be with us. “All the national elections, house of representatives, senate, governorship, likely the presidential election, we will not be satisfied with just the 25 percent of votes cast. “No half way about it, if we are to win, we must try to win every state.” He said ahead of inaugurating the committee, comprehensive meetings were held among the party’s leaders in Abia. He expressed optimism that with the inauguration of the committee, there will be peace in APC Abia. “We are not going to hold reconciliation meetings again. We will now leave it to the leaders of the party in Abia to play their politics in the state,” he added.   “Abuja is not about Abia, go to Abia and play politics there, do the necessary, lobby and reconcile, because all politics is local. Let Abia go and work together.” In his remarks, Chris Adighije, chairman of the committee, said all aggrieved APC members in Abia will be reconciled. This, he said, is critical to enable the party build strength to face challenges from other political parties. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, deputy chief whip of the house of representatives, will serve as secretary of the committee. Other members of the committee are Henry Ikoh, minister of state for science, technology and innovation; Emeka Atuma, Martins Azubuike; and Emeka Wogu, former minister of labour and productivity. Ikechi Emenike, Abia APC governorship candidate, is also a member of the committee.
