Strike: Those blaming us are ignorant of our demands —ASUU

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Calabar zone, has said Nigerians blaming the union for the prolonged industrial action lacked knowledge about their real demands. The zonal coordinator and senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Uyo, UNIUYO, Dr. Aniekan Brown, spoke during an interview in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Brown said: “Essentially, when we opted for this struggle, we had known that it wasn’t supposed to be a case of popularity contest. “I salute the support we’ve had over the months. It was a well-thought-out decision to embark on a strike for a better future for all of us. “But my view is that anybody who will take offence with the union, anybody who is blaming ASUU today does that out of ignorance. So, I will appeal to them to take it easy and understand with us. “What ASUU is doing is a selfless struggle. For those who are blaming ASUU, our challenge is to educate them, because if they had known why we are on strike, they will not blame ASUU. He said: “That also tells you the average of education in our country, because we’ve held press conferences, we’ve had appearances on Television, Radio programmes at various stations and levels. We even interpret in vernacular, and you still find people not following.”

Documentary on bandits: NBC fines Trust TV, MultiChoice, TSTV, StarTimes N5m each

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has imposed fines on Trust Television, MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, TelCom Satellite Limited, and StarTimes Limited for airing a documentary on banditry. Balarabe Ilelah, director-general of the NBC, announced the development in in a statement on Wednesday. Trust TV, an organisation affiliated to Daily Trust newspaper, had aired a documentary entitled ‘Nigeria’s Banditry: The Inside Story’, in March, while the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Africa Eye released its documentary — ‘The Bandit Warlords of Zamfara’ — recently. Consequently, the federal government said both media outlets would be penalised for “glorifying terrorism”.   Ilelah said the fines for DSTV, StarTimes and TSTV was because the platforms aired the BBC documentary on banditry. “The National Broadcasting Commission, today, August 3, 2022, imposed a Five Million Naira (N5,000,000.00) sanction, each, on Multichoice Nigeria Limited, owners of DSTV; TelCom Satellite Limited (TSTV); NTA Startimes Limited; for the carriage of the documentary by the BBC Africa Eye titled, ‘Bandit Warlords of Zamfara’ which glorified the activities of bandits and undermines national security in Nigeria,” the statement reads. “Trust TV Network Limited was also fined Five Million Naira (N5,000,000.00) for its documentary titled: ‘Nigeria’s Banditry-The Inside Story’.   “While appreciating the need of educating, informing, and enlightening the public on issues bordering on developments and happenings within and outside the country, the Commission wishes to seize this opportunity to advise broadcasters to be circumspect and deliberate in the choice and carriage of contents deleterious to Nigeria’s National security. “Consequently, the airing and carriage of these documentaries contravened the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, sixth edition.” According to Ilelah, the airing of the documentaries contravened section 3(1)(1) of the broadcast code which reads: “No broadcast shall encourage or incite to crime. lead to public disorder or hate, be repugnant to public feelings or contain offensive reference to any person or organisation, alive or dead or generally be disrespectful to human dignity”. NBC also said the platforms violated section 3(12)(2), which bars a broadcaster from transmitting a programme “that incites or likely to incite to violence among the populace, causing mass panic, political and social upheaval, security breach and general social disorder”, as well as section 3(11)(2), which reads: “the Broadcaster shall ensure that law enforcement is upheld at all times in a manner depicting that law and order are socially superior to, or more desirable than crime or anarchy”. “The imposed penalties on these broadcast media platforms and station is to be remitted not later than August 30, 2022. Failure to comply with this will lead to the imposition of a higher sanction as provided in the Code,” Ilelah added. “Broadcasters are enjoined to be instruments of national unity and desist from falling into antics of using their platforms to promote and glamorise subversive elements and their activities. “Please note that every broadcast station or platform is responsible for the content it transmits or transmitted on its platform, and shall be held liable for any content in violation of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.” Meanwhile, in a statement on Wednesday, Trust TV said it is studying the NBC’s decision and considering its options on the matter.   “While we are currently studying the Commission’s action and weighing our options, we wish to state unequivocally that as a television station, we believe we were acting in the public interest by shedding light on the thorny issue of banditry and how it is affecting millions of citizens of our country,” the statement reads. “The documentary traces the root of the communal tensions and systemic inadequacies which led to the armed conflict that is setting the stage for another grand humanitarian crisis in Nigeria.   “It presents insights into the intersection of injustice, ethnicity and bad governance as drivers of the conflict. “It also aggregates voices of experts and key actors towards finding solutions, including those of the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Senator Saidu Mohammed Dansadau, who hails from one the worst hit communities in Zamfara state.”

Obi’s group knocks Tinubu over ‘Obi-tuary’ article

The Peter Obi Support Network has slammed the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing him of wishing the Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, and his supporters dead. The group in a statement, observed with dismay that Tinubu has refused to condemn the “obituary” column written by one of his aides, Mr Sam Omatseye, published on Monday. The statement which was signed by the Deputy Director of Communications, POSN, Mr Adegbite Adekunle, on Wednesday, said Omatseye, had in the article, wished the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his supporters dead. The group said, “If Tinubu did not sanction that article, it would not have been published. “If he did not sanction it, by now Omatseye would have been sacked or, at least, reprimanded for that satanic piece. “For Tinubu and his camp to keep quiet on this sacrilegious write-up by one of his confidants and published by his own newspaper speaks volumes. It betrays Tinubu’s endorsement of the column which has attracted widespread condemnation, except from the Asiwaju and his camp.” It noted that this is the second time in barely three weeks that the APC camp is praying for death in the Obi camp, recalling that Tinubu himself during an APC rally in Osun State on July 13 publicly declared that Labour Party’s ‘Obidients’ – as Obi’s supporters are otherwise known – would labour till death. The statement read in part, “The APC has brought in ethnicity, religion and now death wish into the 2023 campaign. It portends grave danger. “Ethnicity: He was the only presidential candidate who said, ‘It is my turn. It is Yorubas’ turn’. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and others accentuated it with their ethnic comments and actions. “Religion: He was the only one who disregarded the religious plurality in his choice of running mate, thereby making religion a talking point in this campaign season. “Repeated reference to death – He was the one who said that Labour Party supporters will labour in vain to their death. Now he has published a full-page article in his newspaper (The Nation) referring to #PeterObi as ‘OBI-TUARY’, another reference to death. In that same article, he also engaged in the demonisation of the Igbos, a clear attempt to set Igbos up for hate and attacks. “It is obvious the Tinubu’s camp is desperate and ready to fight dirty in this campaign. But this is not 2015. The people are ready to meet them squarely.” The group, therefore, challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission, as the electoral umpire, not to be indifferent to the excesses of Tinubu and his supporters. “While Tinubu is free to pursue his life ambition to become Nigeria’s president by hook or by crook, he should realise that Nigeria is bigger than his selfish ambition and should refrain from unnecessarily heating up the polity. INEC should call him to order without further delay before he plunges the country into needless chaos with his unguarded utterance and hate speech,” the group added.

Anyone with useful information as to his whereabouts should contact the EFCC or the nearest police station,” the EFCC wrote. A fresh eight-count charge was brought against him, including conspiracy to launder funds obtained through unlawful activity and laundering of funds received through illegal activity. Others are retention of proceeds of criminal conduct, use of property derived from an unlawful act, possession of a document containing false pretense, and failure to disclose assets and properties. He was remanded in the custody of the EFCC but later granted a bail of N200 million which he couldn’t fulfill. The bail sum was later slashed to N25 million. The EFCC had, on June 10, accused Mompha of flouting a court order by traveling to Dubai with a new passport. On June 22, a Lagos court revoked the bail granted to him after the controversial socialite’s absence for trial.

Man, 50, Rapes Seven-Year-Old Orphan

A fifty-year-old man, Danladi Daniel, who is a non-academic staff of College of Education, Akwanga, in Akwanga local government area of Nasarawa state, has allegedly defiled a seven-year-old orphan. Our correspondent gathered that the victim stays with her grandfather in Ungwar Loko, Gwanje village in Akwanga Local Government Area of the state, and is his only granddaughter. In a chat with our correspondent in Akwanga LGA, the grandfather appealed to the state government, the police and relevant authorities to urgently intervene in the matter to ensure that the perpetrator of the act is prosecuted according to the law. The victim, who has been living with her grandfather since her parents died four years ago, told our correspondent that on the fateful day, she woke up and discovered that she was the only one at home; so, she decided to sit outside their compound. She explained that one ‘Uncle Dan’, whose house is near to theirs, asked her to come and meet him, but she refused. “He left and still returned back, pretending as if he was fetching water from the well. And before I knew what was going on, he dragged me to his room, removed my pants and slept with me.” The grandfather of the victim stated that when he returned in the evening, he could not find his granddaughter at home. He said, “My belief at first was that my granddaughter was kidnapped to an unknown destination. I was totally confused and devastated when I couldn’t set my eyes on her.” “Upon searching for her within the neighbourhood as I kept on shouting her name at the top of my voice, I saw her limping out of Dan’s room. Her eyes were looking red; she was sweating. “I asked her what happened, then she revealed that my neighbour, Danladi Daniel, dragged her to his room and had sex with her. I immediately took her to a nearby health centre for a test and it was confirmed that she had been defiled. We also saw blood on her clothes and private part.” The Protection Manager, Gamun Centre for Care and Development, Mrs Blessing Tulari, affirmed that the victim was traumatized as a result of the defilement, adding that she urgently needs medical attention and care. Tulari lamented the high rate of sexual abuse against minors across the 13 local government areas of the state, pointing out that between January and July 2022, 12 cases of defilement had been recorded. The Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, said the suspect had been apprehended. “The suspect, Mr Danladi Daniel, a non-academic staff of the College of Education, Akwanga, has been arrested for allegedly defiling the seven-year-old orphan,” he stated.
