Slaves’ curse behind stunted growth in Yorubaland – Akintoye

A Yoruba leader and Head of Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Struggle, Prof. Banji Akintoye, has tendered unreserved apology to the victims of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade in Yorubaland. Akintoye, who is a professor of History, said some of the victims of the slave trade placed a curse on the future generation of Yoruba people for colluding with the Whites to sell them into slavery back then. Akintoye, in an open letter to the Yoruba people which he personally signed and made available to journalists through his Communications Office, on Sunday, said “the Holy Spirit told him that the spirits of those our forefathers sold for peanuts to Portuguese and Dutch people as slaves are behind the lack of growth, development, progress, peace and unity in Yorubaland, and among the Yoruba people.” He said the unholy collaboration between the then leaders of the Yoruba people and the Portuguese and Dutch businessmen who came to Africa for the business of slave trade in 18th century led to the selling of many into slavery and great agony. He said over one million Africans, including the Yoruba people, were exported to Europe and America as Slaves by Europeans, who brought salt to Africa in 18th Century through Porto Novo and Whydan Kingdom in the present-day Benin Republic through the collaboration of some local warriors. “The curses placed on the Yoruba people by victims of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, many of whom jumped into the Atlantic Ocean during their forced trips to Europe and America, needs to be cleansed in order for the Yoruba people to enjoy God’s favour, cohesion, unity and progress. “Predating colonialism and slavery in Africa in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Yoruba race had engaged in internal conflicts, resulting in marauding, intra-tribal and internecine warfare. Historians mostly agree that such civil unrest did not result in commercialization of human captives until the era of colonialism and slave trade on African soil. Yet, we have to agree that foreigners did not do this without the cooperation of some of the indigenous people, the Yoruba. “According to the revelation referenced above, a segment of the captive Yoruba sons and daughters hauled into slavery looked back and placed a curse on the land and the people that violated their humanity by selling them into slavery. “Furthermore, Holy Spirit revealed that some among the Yoruba captives committed suicide by jumping off the captive ships into their deaths deep into the Atlantic Ocean, while others simply placed the curse and endured the shame by continuing the captive’s journey. For this, the need for reconciliation and unreserved apologies is real and past due. “Against this backdrop of the atrocity of historical proportions unleashed against the peoples of Black Africa, which escalated into full-blown slavery, the current generation of the Yoruba seeks to tender an unreserved, heart-felt apology on behalf of our past generations of forefathers, monarchs and chiefs who participated in slavery. “Also, those who folded their hands in helplessness and hopelessness, those who looked the other way when they could have spoken or stood against the perpetrators of this heinous crime against humanity, and those who cooperated and/or benefitted from the sales of their brothers and sisters, children, parents, friends and neighbors. “Words alone cannot atone for the immeasurable amount of suffering endured by our brothers and sisters during the forceful passages into the New World as they entered the narrow passage that ushered them into the journey of no return. Yet, words have to be offered to express remorse, regret and above all, to ask for forgiveness that could only come from the heart, and straight from the throne of grace.” According to Akintoye, although the crime was committed many years ago, the effect of the bitterness might still be the reason for lack of unity and development in Yorubaland. “Having said all that, we say it from the bottom of our hearts that we sincerely understand if you still nurse the hurt and feel the pain; after all, years may heal the wound, but the scar may always remain. All we can say is to appeal that you please forgive our forefathers on whose behalf we tender these apologies; and to forgive us as offspring of our erring progenitors. “May God bless you, lighten your burdens, redeem time for you and generations to come after you and heal our land. Above all, may the Lord of the Universe forgive the Yoruba race and move it into a new dispensation in its onward march towards the attainment of redemption and enjoyment of its potential, Amen,” he added.

NBA-AGM: I can’t be submissive to system – Sowore

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress has cleared the air about his absence at the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Meeting. Sowore alleged that the leadership of the NBA, alongside some politicians invited, were probably afraid of his presence at the programme. He noted that he could not change his strategy to fit into a status quo that was not working, nor become submissive to be recognised or invited for such programme or other ones. Sowore was speaking in an interview with Arise TV Morning Show, on Sunday, where he responded to questions about his 2023 ambition and his absence from the NBA programme. Sowore said, “I think it was a political decision on behalf of the NBA leadership that some of us, particularly myself, should not feature in that line. I think it’s wrong on their part to have done that. This is how elections are rigged beforehand. They know that if I were to show up, I would say things that might unsettle the people that were invited. The PUNCH reported that, at the opening of the NBA conference which held in Lagos on Monday, August 22, presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, and the Labour Party, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, respectively, were present. The vice-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Kashim Shettima, was also present to represent the flag bearer of the party, Bola Tinubu. Speaking further, Sowore said, “Maybe those people (some politicians) in advance, might have requested that they don’t want their feathers ruffled” by saying “don’t bring people like Sowore here who would come and say things that would make us uncomfortable.” “I actually did reach out to the President of the NBA, Olumide Akpata, that it was wrong and unfair,” he added, saying that he expected the NBA to bring justice and balance to the political process. The human rights activist also said he was not ready to change his strategy, noting that diplomacy had not worked in the struggle for the freedom of Nigerians. “The only strategy that is important is the strategy that is important to take the Nigerian people out of the misery that has been foisted upon them. “I cannot change the strategy that says to you that, when you wake up in the morning, you deserve food, a job, a hospital, good roads. You deserve the education system to work; you deserve a system that works for your existence and dignity as a citizen.” “Changing that strategy means that I will have to go and be part of parcel of those people who meet in darkness, London and other parts of the world to determine the political future of Nigeria without Nigerians. What we need to do is to get across to the Nigerian people.” Sowore said. Sowore also noted that some media were not also giving him platform the way they gave other candidates, adding that the media had more to do in the area of balancing and fairness, based on ethics. The PUNCH reported that the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, also gave his reasons for being absent at the program.

Ayo Oyalowo disclosed this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today. The APC chieftain was responding to a comment made by a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Anthony Elihebo, who made a reference to a remark by the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on the university education in light of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities. It tells you of the investment he has made in education when he was governor and it has continued. Today, institutions in Lagos are not on strike; it tells you he understands what it means to educate people. “I think we make so much noise about tertiary education that I think we don’t always understand. Tertiary education is not ‘a human right.’ I mean basically by WHO standard primary and secondary schools are actually a right; it’s a criminal offence not to allow people to go through. “If we do so well in primary and secondary schools, we will not have so much problem in the university. The reason is that if you go to the university and you see some of the people we produce as graduates, you will be sad. So we need to develop the bedrock of education. ASUU has always been on strike.”

Support Obi, not Atiku, Tinubu, group tells Wike

Non-indigenes Association in Rivers State has called on Rivers State Governor to back the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Dr. Peter Obi, to win the presidential election in 2023. They advised Wike not to leave the former Anambra State governor (Obi) who is much younger than his two other main rivals. Chairman of the association, High Chief Felix Ogbegbor, made the call during a media briefing in Port Harcourt. Ogbegbor said Wike should not make the mistake of supporting the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, and that of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, saying they have nothing to offer the country. They explained that as governor of Anambra State, Obi performed well and left a clean record, pointing out that he has a better agenda to reposition the country. Ogbegbor, noted that among the three candidates fielded by the APC, PDP, and LP, that Peter Obi stands out and is most preferred because of his record of performance and integrity, hence their call on Wike to support him. He said Nigeria currently doesn’t need a leader above 70 years old, saying Tinubu and Atiku cannot lead the nation out of its current economic and security challenges. He said, “I think Peter Obi is the best person that Wike should support. Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu don’t have anything to offer. “If you look at it, Atiku, when he was the Vice President, he was busy buying Nigeria. Tinubu is out of the race because he bought the whole of Lagos as a governor. “If Atiku and Tinubu cannot step down, Wike should support Peter Obi. We don’t need an elderly person in that office again. The others are above 70 and we don’t need people now. “If Wike supports Obi, we will be right behind him,” he said, saying the association comprising non+indigenes across the country has passed a conference vote on Governor Wike. He said the association would only support and work for candidates backed by Wike, adding that the Governor has demonstrated competence in leadership. “Governor of Rivers State is a pride of the people. Wike has all it takes to be Nigeria’s president. We are here to support a young man who knows what it takes to please his people. “Wike for the past seven years we have not seen the kind of development he is driving before. He always attracts good things to Rivers State. “That is why we have decided to follow him. Whatever he (Wike) says we should do that is what we will do. “What person he wants to vote we will. Anywhere he goes we will go,” the association’s chairman said.
