A lady woke her up in the park, and she did not know where she was. “So, they contacted the police, and our public relations office called my attention to it. That was why I made it public.” Our correspondent who ran a check on the address, discovered that the street does not exist. Outcome Of 2023 Elections Will Shock Nigerians – Ex-Lawmaker

The spokesperson for the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) Abdulmumin Jibrin has said that the outcome of the 2023 general elections will shock Nigerians. The former lawmaker was commenting on the party’s chances in the 2023 elections during an interview with Channels TV’s Politics Today. He said, “Mark my word, the outcome of the 2023 general elections will shock Nigerians. Everything that will happen in the next six months will never be to the advantage of APC or PDP. NNPP will be the beneficiary of that. “There will not be any coalition that NNPP or Kwankwaso requires. If you want to do an alliance with us fine. After all, we are coming with the largest chunk of the votes to the table. If you look at how we conduct our elections we are not keeping all the fire you are seeing, all the parties abusing themselves. Jibrin said the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would struggle to get 25 per cent of Kano’s votes. He added, “We heard that APC and PDP are struggling to get 25 per cent, knowing full that they have lost Kano. And in their own permutations if they are able to have bit and pieces here and there, they will be able to get it. But let me tell you, no political party will get 25 per cent in Kano. We are opening the ballot sheet of Kwankwaso as I said with five million votes.”

FG decimating lecturers with forced hunger — ASUU cries out

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Branch, Friday alleged that the Federal government was hell bent on decimating public university lecturers in their employ with forced hunger, as was the case during the Nigeria-Biafra civil war. The branch Chairperson, Dr Ogugua Egwu stated this while reacting to the irksome and provocative outbursts of the Education Minister, Adamu Adamu, on their “take it or leave it” offer of peanuts to university lecturers, as alternative to the principles of collective bargaining. In a statement titled “FG: Weaponizing hunger on our dependents” Comrade Egwu wondered why all the Ministers involved in resolving the FG-ASUU face-off were being economical with the truth, adding that “they come to the public domain every day to misinform Nigerians.” According to him, before 2015 when this administration was still fighting to unseat the Jonathan administration, Adamu Adamu was solidly behind ASUU when the Union was on strike. “Back then when Adamu Adamu still had common sense and shared some sympathies for ASUU, he openly declared to the whole world that: “This nation owes a debt of gratitude to ASUU and the strike should not be called off until the government accepts to do and does what is required. So, instead of hectoring ASUU to call off its strike, the nation should be praying for more of its kind in other sectors of the economy”. “Having freely made such a statement not too long ago, many observers and social historians wonder whether Adamu was inebriated when he unleashed those lifesaving thoughts to the public domain through a popular newspaper column or not. “Again, while reacting to the threat by Adamu that striking public university lecturers will not be paid their six months’ withheld salaries, the branch Chairperson stated that Adamu’s statements were a confirmation of the pristine loathing the current government has had for ASUU since coming into power.” He stated further that: “FG’s hatred of our Union is congenitally historical and unmistakeably aimed at annihilating our members and their many dependants. In what better ways do you explain the monthly and uninterrupted payment of salaries to striking workers in Nigeria’s Research Institute for many months running, whereas ASUU is being punished? “How does one explain the fact that ASUU members’ salaries were abruptly stopped in February 2022 immediately this strike action commenced, whereas the same government continued paying non-teaching staff in the same public universities who are even with larger wage bills and populations than ASUU? “How do you justify the payment of idle refineries workers salaries running into over 136 billion naira by this same government, according to the Guardian newspaper, while ASUU members and their families are being starved to death for their patriotism? “And as though these well-hatched insults to ASUU are not enough, the same Buhari government that is using the “No work, no pay” stratagem against ASUU, has just woken up late in the evening to pay the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), and other Allied hospital workers their April and May salaries of 2018 which this same government withheld because they embarked on a properly and legitimately convened strike action, just like we did in February this year. “Rhetorically, the branch Chairperson questioned: “Where is the justice, or is this another modern Nigerian way of replicating the injustices of powerful men against innocent, patriotic and hardworking Nigerian lecturers as was demonstrated in George Orwell’s Animal Farm? “That this government is planning to kill and bury public universities in Nigeria the same way they have done to public primary and secondary education, is indeed very worrisome. And more worrisome is the fact that nearly the entire assemblage of the current Buhari cabinet members schooled through the benevolence of government incentives like decent infrastructure and even scholarships! “One again wonders why their entire ilk, including some of their unpatriotic diasporan collaborators, like Farooq Kperogi, will shamelessly come to the public space to blame ASUU for the current woes of students in public universities in Nigeria. And that’s what happens when the likes of Kperogi, Ngige, Keyamo and Adamu get compromised by selfish pecuniary benefits, instead of honourably admitting their failures or the mistakes of government like Isa Pantami has already done by exposing the ills of fraudulent IPPIS, GIFMIS and TSA, even though belatedly.”

Why I met with Atiku, Obasanjo, Tinubu – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Friday, said his team was more interested in a better Nigeria, and they are consulting widely with those who mean well for the country. Wike spoke when he interacted with journalists at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa in Ikwerre Local Government Area, shortly on arrival from London on Friday. In the company of the Rivers State governor were the governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom and Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu. Wike, who confirmed their meetings with Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar; All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu; Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi and former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, in London, explained that topmost on the agenda is how to make Nigeria better than what is it currently. The Rivers State governor noted that all is not well with Nigeria and they are seeking remedies that will restore enduring hope in Nigeria. He said, “I can confirm that this is the first time as a team that we are meeting with presidential candidates. “We met with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC and we met with our leader, former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo. “We met the presidential candidate of Labour Party. We also met with our presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. For whatever it’s worth, consultation is ongoing. “Whatever we are talking about, is for the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians. It is not parochial and tied to one person or group of persons. “We believe that with what is going on, it will be for the interest of Nigerians at the end of the day.” Wike decried the situation where standard, training and competence have always been traded for mediocrity. He said leadership should not be about one individual and the interest of his family, but about the collective interest of everybody. “Consultation is still ongoing. Never mind some people who do not believe in the existence of this country. “Leadership is not about you and your family. Leadership is about everybody. It’s unfortunate that we are in a country now where a man finishes eight years as a governor and brings his own son as a governor too and as a member of the National Assembly. “It’s only in this part of the world that you can see that when we are talking about poverty everywhere. These are people who do not mean well for this Nigeria,” he stated Wike also wondered why religion and ethnicity are used as the tenable identity to describe Nigerians when competence is required. Continuing, Wike said, “The only identity they have in this country is religion and ethnicity, nothing more. It’s either, I’m a Christian or I’m a Moslem, I’m a Fulani or I’m an Igbo. Nigeria cannot move forward except they think it will be them. That’s where we are. “We are in a country where someone with a primary school certificate can be appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. That tells you how bad this country has become. “But with our consultation, all these will be a thing of the past. No amount of intimidation or blackmail will deter us. We are determined to right the wrong.” In his response, the leader of the team and Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, noted that they have met with renowned persons in the last few days because of their belief that Nigeria is in distress and required concerted effort to rescue it. He stated that they had fruitful talks with those they had met and it was beyond partisan politics, because well-meaning Nigerians need to work together in ensuring that Nigeria survives. “For us, we are looking at the larger picture. Nigeria today is in distress. It is about what can we do. No man or woman alone can get it right for our country. “We are looking at how we can harness ideas and put ourselves together to ensure that we get out of the present challenge we are in Nigeria today. “From top to bottom, consider what has happened from 2015 and where we are today. So, what we are doing is a concern that we have for our country, Nigeria. “This is beyond partisan politics. We are looking on how we can come together and find a way of ensuring that Nigeria survives. Nigeria is on drip, Nigeria is on oxygen and it is about how can we get out of this,” Ortom said. He stated that the three separate meetings they had within the week were worthwhile session for them. “The consultation is going on and will continue to go on. We are still going to meet here. We are still going to meet some persons some other time and see how we can work to ensure that the project Nigeria works.” On his part, Abia State governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, emphasised that they are on a mission and are determined to find a way of rescuing Nigeria. He noted that they are mindful of what society to bequeath to the present generation, their children and grandchildren alike. He said, “And this is a country with great potential and we have to protect it well. We think that we need to engage across the board. “We are also looking at speaking with civil society organisations and those who have ideas, with Nigerians in the diaspora. “All the resources available in this country have to come together at this time to see how best we can move Nigeria forward.”

‘We want orderly exit of funds’ — CBN releases $265m to prevent aviation sector’s collapse

In a move to halt the crisis in the aviation sector, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says it has released $265 million to airlines operating in the country, to settle outstanding ticket sales. Osita Nwanisobi, director, corporate communications, CBN, said this in a statement issued on Friday. Nwanisobi said Godwin Emefiele, CBN governor and his team were concerned about the development and what it portends for the sector and travellers as well as the country in the comity of nations. He reiterated that the apex bank was not against any company repatriating its funds from the country, adding that what CBN stood for was an orderly exit for those that might be interested in doing so.   “A breakdown of the figure indicates that the sum of $230 million was released as a special FX intervention while another sum of $35 million was released through Retail SMIS auction,” the statement reads. “With Friday’s release, it is expected that operators and travellers as well will heave huge sighs of relief, as some airlines had threatened to withdraw their services in the face of unremitted funds for the outstanding sale of tickets.”

ASUU: FG needs to rethink varsity autonomy – Uniosun VC

The Vice Chancellor, Osun State University, (Uniosun), Professor Clement Adeboye has stressed the need for the Federal Government to review the autonomy granted universities in the country with a view to ensure efficiency in the system. This is as he described statement credited to the President of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke on television interview that Uniosun is a “quack” university as reckless. Speaking with journalists at the University main campus in Osogbo, he said the present state of university autonomy is confusing and has a lot of lacuna, wondering how universities with autonomy still run to Abuja for finance related assistance. “We have to renegotiate with the government the issue of university autonomy. I don’t understand a system with autonomy that still run to Abuja to resolves issues. It is either the law regarding autonomy is reviewed to allow council take control of the universities or FG scrapped it and takes over funding of education completely”, he said. While reacting to the statement credited ASUU President, Professor Osodeke, that Uniosun is one of the quacks university for not joining the union’s strike, the institution’s Vice Chancellor, said Osodeke need to get educated for talking on issues he lack adequate knowledge over. His words; “Some federal universities have been struggling to get accredited of courses we are running, that shows that we are committed to excellence. We take exception to the statement made by Osodeke referring to Uniosun as quack school. “This university has a profile of having done what other universities have not done in 14 years of its existence. This University has 481 full time academic staff, out of them 387 of them are PhD holders. “For a university to have collaboration with Havard University, and win several foreign grants including Canada, Germany, Norway, and many more, that means we are not a quack university. “Osodeke should is careless with his comments, he is just a Nigerian, he should not talk about what he doesn’t know. A true Professor should speak to fact, which has not done, he should get educated”.

Group to ASUU: Emulate other University Associations; call off action for sake of parents, students

A group, the Campaign for Equal Rights and Opportunities for all Nigerians, CERON, has appealed to the striking members of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to make concessions in their demands and call off the lingering industrial action in the interest of the worried parents and students. The group urged ASUU to emulate other striking members of associations in public universities who made concessions and called off their action after heeding the appeals by parents and students. The Secretary of CERON, Mr. Francis Odiir who made the appeal weekend in Makurdi lamented that Nigerians were getting agitated over the strike which had crippled Nigeria’s public universities and forced several students into social vices and crime. The group pointed out that “the sympathy ASUU enjoys among Nigerians was already waning because other associations in the universities have called off their action and Nigerians expect that ASUU should toe the same path. “That is why we are appealing to ASUU to call off the strike while they continue their negotiation with the government so that they will still continue to enjoy the support and sympathy of all Nigerians. “ASUU should realise by now that the present administration pays little attention to the education sector and therefore shouldn’t expect anything extraordinary from the government to better the sector. “These are people who have their children in schools outside the country and therefore cannot appreciate the pains the children of the masses who populate the public universities and their parents are going through due to the prolonged strike. “That is the more reason why we are appealing to the striking lecturers to consider the pains of the students and their parents and call off the action. “We earnestly believe that the next government which would be ushered in, in about nine months time would prioritize the education of our youths and address the pending issues because this present administration has shown clearly that education is not its priority which is rather unfortunate in this age and era.” RELATED

Judge jails Naira Marley’s former lawyer over N4m bribe

A Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday sentenced a lawyer, Taiwo Oreagba, to two years in prison for soliciting N4 million bribe. Oluwatoyin Taiwo, the judge, however, discharged the lawyer on a second count of obtaining money by false pretence. Ms Oreagba, who once represented the musician, Naira Marley, was convicted after a two-year trial. She was originally arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) on 12 November, 2020, before Justice Sherifat Solebo of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja. She pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge bordering on alleged corrupt demand and obtaining the N4 million by false pretence. At that time, Ms Oreagba, a counsel to Kelechi Uka – who was under investigation by the EFCC – was alleged to have collected the N4 million from one Henry Umoh supposedly to influence EFCC agents to secure Mr Uka’s release. Mr Uka is standing trial on offences relating to stealing at the Lagos State High Court. Ms Oreagba was accused of committing the offence on or about the 2nd March 2020 in Lagos. Following the defendant’s plea, she was granted bail and the trial commenced. But, during trial, Justice Solebo recused herself from hearing the case and it was sent back to the Chief Judge for reassignment. The case was then assigned to Justice Taiwo. Mr Oreagba was re-arraigned on the two counts and the trial commenced before Justice Taiwo in October 2022. The prosecution called five witnesses and tendered the audio recording where the defendant was heard bragging that she could get her clients a reprieve by giving EFCC officers, Sini Oma John, Femi Olukinni, and their team part of the N4,000,000 to influence the said officers. During the trial, Mr Umoh narrated how Ms Oreagba convinced him to part with the money. He said she never issued a receipt. Mr Umoh who testified as Prosecution Witness (PW) 2 testified that the money the defendant allegedly demanded from him was not her professional fees, but the money she claimed would be given to EFCC officers. Messrs John and Olukinni, whom Ms Oreagba mentioned in the audio, also denied that they had any discussion with the lawyer about a reprieve for Mr Uka. They also insisted that they did not receive any money from her, contrary to Ms Oreagba’s comments in the audio recording. Ms Oreagba testified alone. At the close of the prosecution’s case, the defence led by Mahmood Adesina (SAN), entered a “no case” submission, arguing that the money was Ms Oreagba’s professional fees. In her judgment, Justice Taiwo observed that Ms Oreagba did not challenge the content of the voice recording. She sentenced her to two years imprisonment for the offence of corrupt demand by a person. However, noting that the convict had restituted the N4 million to her victim, the judge gave her an option of a N500,000 fine. The judge condemned the convict’s boast that she could influence law enforcement officers and that she could influence the assignment of cases to judges in the Lagos State Judiciary.

Wike, PDP Govs Won’t Work For Tinubu, Ologbondiyan Replies Masari

A former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kola Ologbondiyan, has dismissed a statement by Ibrahim Masari that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike; and some governors of the opposition party will work for All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu. Ologbondiyan in a chat with Channels Television on Friday said there is no truth in Masari’s claim, noting that PDP governors have seen the failure of the APC and won’t vote for the ruling party. The former PDP spokesman said, “The assertion by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s placeholder, Ibrahim Masari, that PDP governors will vote for All Progressives Congress candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is lame. It is an assertion that is not predicated on fact and as such, it cannot be taken seriously by Nigerians. “The PDP governors have no reason, and have no basis to go and vote for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in view of the fact that Nigerians have already distance themselves from the processes of the All Progressives Congress and Nigerians, upon whom the APC has become a burden in the last seven years, are looking for every way and means to reject them at the poll. “So, it does not add up that governors of PDP who have seen the failure of the All Progressives Congress will vote for the APC. It doesn’t add up. Members of the PDP have dismissed the assertion (by Masari) because there is no truth in it; it is lame.” Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor, had selected Masari as a placeholder to beat a deadline by the Independent National Electoral Commission, before he later chose ex-governor of Borno State as his running mate. Masari had recently said in an interview with BBC Hausa, that Wike and his colleagues in the opposition party “will support APC to win the 2023 elections, especially Nyesom Wike”. Tinubu this week, in London, met with Wike and some PDP governors including Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Ikpeazu Okezie of Abia State. Wike also met with PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in London, amid a reported rift after the former Vice President defeated him at the PDP presidential primary in Abuja last May. The Rivers State governor also met Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi; and former President Olusegun Obasanjo in London.

45-year-old man beheads uncle’s wife, uses body part for soup

A 45 year-old-man, Jeremiah Ode from Igwe Ochekpo in Oju Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue state has been arrested for the alleged gruesome murder and beheading of 65 years old Mrs. Priscilla Adoga whose head he used for pepper soup. The suspect, a mental case, was alleged to have committed the heinous crime while working on the farm of his victim where he murdered her. He was said to have been caught by the locals who went searching for the women after she was declared missing, while he was eating the body part of the deceased which he had already cooked. Arreigning the suspect before a Chief Magistrate Court, the Prosecuting Police Officer, Inspector Omaye Ujata in his First Information Report, FIR, told the court that the incident which happened last Friday was reported to the police by one Silas Igiri of Oju LGA. He said the report indicated that “the accused attacked the victim, his uncle’s wife, with a machete in a farm, where she was working at the time, and killed her after which he beheaded her.” The Prosecutor informed the court that “the accused in his statement confessed to committing the crime.” No plea was taken for want of jurisdiction, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Regina Alagh ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Correctional Centre, Makurdi; and adjourned the matter to November 11, 2022.
