Angry Niger Delta militants oppose Tompolo’s contract

Armed militants from the creeks of the Niger Delta are spoiling for war over the N4bn surveillance contract awarded to a former creek warlord, Government Ekpemupolo, aka Tompolo. The hooded militants, who brandished AK-47 rifles, vowed to sustain attacks on the pipelines if some notable indigenes were not integrated into the deal. Speaking in a viral video, the leader of the militants, who identified himself as ‘General’ Lente said the Minister of State for Petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva, erred for giving only Tompolo the job. He said leaders from a community hosting 83km of over 90km pipeline were ignored in the contract award. Lente wondered why King Ateke Tom and Alhaji Asari Dokubo were not considered to be part of the contract, accusing the minister of causing confusion in Ijaw land. According to him: ” This message is for Timipre Sylva. What you are trying to do is to cause trouble in the Niger Delta especially in Ijaw land. What you are trying to do won’t work for you. “You are trying to cause confusion. NCTL is over 90km. A particular community has 83km in it, you didn’t give any of them the job but you took it to somebody who is in Oporoza when we have the likes of the former IYC President, Dokubo Alhaji Asari, High Chief Ateke Tom, you didn’t give to them. “But let me tell you, I General Lente even if the leaders accept it, I will not accept it because you tried it in oil and gas, you succeeded because we didn’t talk to you. You think we are David Lyon that you took into politics and after he lost his election, you took over his contract and gave it to your brother Kojo Sam. “This is the pipeline, come and see. Nobody will stop us. If you don’t give the contract to the original indigenes, it will not work”.

The operatives also neutralized five members of the outlawed group. Recall that gunmen on Thursday evening stormed Izombie community and set many houses and shops in fire. In a statement by Mike Abattam, the police spokesperson in Imo, he said three policemen sustained minor injuries in the raid. Abattam also revealed that the hoodlums were responsible for burning of many shops and houses after the police engaged them. The statement reads, “the Imo State Police Command’s Tactical Teams on 25/8/2022 at about 1630 hours, after diligent gathering of both technical intelligence and credible information on the clandestine activities of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPO) and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Izombe, mobilized and raided the identified camp newly created by the hoodlums in Izombe community in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State. “The hoodlums who on sighting the police operatives engaged them in a gun battle but were overwhelmed by the superior fire power of the gallant police operatives who positioned themselves professionally. During the fierce gun battle, the hoodlums suffered a huge casualty which resulted to them retreating, escaping into the bush with various degrees of bullet wounds. “The operatives after dislodging the hoodlums moved in and conducted a thorough search of the camp where the following items: three (3) English made Pump Action Guns, One Hundred and Eighteen (118) GPMG ammunitions, Fourty One (41) AK 47 live ammunition, Ninteen (19) G3 ammunitions, One (1) cut to size locally made double barrel, one locally made double barrel, Four (4) locally made Pistols, Four (4) locally made explosive devices, military uniforms, police uniforms, Biafra flags, four ESN caps, One (1) pair of Police boot, various types of hard drugs, some police accoutrements, Four (4) live tortoise, large quantities of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, and pieces of red cloths were recovered to the station. “After the successful raid, the operatives while leaving the hoodlums’ den were ambushed some distance away, by the hoodlums who engaged them in another gun duel. During the exchange of gun fire, the operatives were able to subdue the hoodlums and in the process Five (5) of them were neutralised. Unfortunately, three (3) police operatives sustained not life threatening injuries and were taken to a government hospital where they were treated. “The hoodlums realizing they have suffered a heavy defeat went for a reprisal attack in the villages, burning houses belonging to both serving and retired police officers and other security agencies. Gunmen gives residents sleepless nights Several shops and houses were razed on Thursday when gunmen invaded Izombe, a community in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, South-east Nigeria. The gunmen were said to have attacked the community at about 4:30 p.m. It was gathered that the attack lasted for over two hours. A resident of the area, Chijioke Kelechi, told this newspaper that the gunmen wore security uniforms. He said the gunmen arrived the community in about eight vehicles causing residents to flee. “Suddenly they started shooting sporadically and all of us ran for our dear lives,” he said. “They set houses and shops ablaze, about 10 or even more.” He said the gunmen appeared to be targeting specific houses and that they were also looting some shops. “We have all run away. We are scared they might come back and kill us,” Mr Kelechi added. He could not confirm if any resident was killed in the attack. A video clip and photographs of some of the shops and houses razed by the gunmen have gone viral on social media. In a video, some shops and houses were in flames, with residents struggling to put off the fire. “It is not easy for us now,” a voice is heard in the background. “They broke people’s shops and carried their goods.” Worsening insecurity Like other states in the South-east, security has deteriorated in Imo State, with frequent attacks by armed persons. The attacks often target security agencies, government officials, and facilities. The latest incident came barely three weeks after gunmen attacked and killed four police officers at Agwa Divisional Police Headquarters in the council area.

US Court Confirms Hushpuppi’s Sentencing Date, Keeps Mum On Kyari’s Extradition

The United States Attorney’s Office for Central District of California, Los Angeles, says the September 21, 2022 sentence date for alleged international Internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, aka, Hushpuppi, remains unchanged. The court’s Director of Media Relations, Thom Mrozek, made this known on Friday in response to an email inquiry by Channels Television. Since Hushpuppi’s conviction last year for alleged $1.1m fraud, the court has moved his sentence date at least three times. Hushpuppi was initially scheduled for sentencing on February 14 but it was moved to July 11 before it was against postponed for September 21 this year. Asked exactly when 39-year-old Hushpuppi would be sentenced by the court, Mrozek said the suspect had long pleaded guilty last year and would be sentenced later this year. “Mr. Abbas is currently scheduled to be sentenced by a federal judge in Los Angeles on September 21,” he said. Hushpuppi had entered a plea bargain and pleaded guilty to charges including money laundering, wire fraud, amongst others brought against him by the court. According to court documents, he risks “20 years’ imprisonment; a 3-year period of supervised release; a fine of $500,000 or twice the gross gain or gross loss resulting from the offence”. He was arrested in Dubai in June 2020 alongside 12 others and extradited to the US for prosecution. Kyari’s extradition Mrozek was, however, silent on the possible extradition of the suspended Head of Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari, who was indicted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the Hushpuppi’s case. The court had ordered the FBI to arrest Kyari over a year ago. “I am unable to offer any comment on the state of Mr. Kyari,” the court official said. FBI Special Agent, Andrew Innocenti, had alleged that Hushpuppi engaged Kyari’s services after a “co-conspirator,” Chibuzo Vincent, allegedly threatened to expose the alleged $1.1m fraud committed against a Qatari businessman. Innocenti had also claimed he got voice calls and WhatsApp conversations between Kyari and Hushpuppi, alleging that the police officer was paid $20,600 for Vincent’s arrest and detention. Kyari had taken to Facebook in July 2021 to deny the allegations but he later deleted the post. The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), had during Channels Television’s Politics Today said the United States Government and the Nigerian Government were discussing Kyari’s case and that reasonable grounds for suspicion have been established against Kyari. “There are a lot of issues that are ongoing inclusive of the possibility of consideration for extradition. That is where the collaboration element of it comes into play,” the AGF had said on the possible extradition of Kyari. Kyari was later arrested by the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency in February for alleged drug-related offences and has since arraigned the suspended deputy police commissioner. Remanded at the Kuje prison in Abuja, Kyari and his co-defendants hope to get bail before Justice Emeka Nwite of a Federal High Court in Abuja on August 30, 2022.

PDP crisis: Ayu’s resignation, only way for peace, WIke’s men insist

Allies of Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, have demanded the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), TheCable can report. Sources said the allies made the demand when Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the PDP, met with them in an attempt to resolve the rift between him and Wike. Meanwhile, it has also emerged that some members of the PDP national working committee national (NWC) are pushing for a probe of the party’s finances under Ayu’s watch. Thursday’s meeting, which was also attended by governors Seyi Makinde, Samuel Ortom and Okezie Ikpeazu, was held at Carlton Hotel in London. Six PDP governors are thought to be aligned with Wike in his face-off with Atiku who reportedly angered them by saying he did not pick Wike as his running mate because he cannot work with him. Atiku was accused of being “impolitic”, further worsened by public statements made by former governors Sule Lamido and Babangida Aliyu which Wike’s associates consider “disparaging”. Lamido described Wike as an “emperor” and said Atiku did not need him to win the presidential election. TheCable reported how the PDP standard bearer embarked on a frantic trip to the UK to have a parley with Wike — after the latter’s meeting with Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), in France, earlier in the week. The meeting between Wike and Tinubu is said to have explored the possibility of the Rivers governor working for the APC at the polls. A crisis rocked the boat of the main opposition party after it held its presidential primary election in May. Party stakeholders expressed concerns that Abubakar ignored Wike after he chose Ifeanyi Okowa, governor of Delta, as his running mate.   Wike’s side said Ayu would need to step down for there to be harmony in the opposition party. “Governors in Wike’s group demanded that Ayu would have to resign for peace to reign in the party. They said he is a divisive figure,” a source close to Atiku, who briefed TheCable after the meeting, said. Ayu openly celebrated when Atiku won the party’s ticket, describing Aminu Tambuwal, Sokoto governor who withdrew to support Atiku, as “the hero of the convention”. In a counter to the demand for Ayu’s resignation, the former vice-president said Umar Damagum, deputy national chairman (north), would become the chairman according to the PDP constitution — meaning another person from the north would hold sway in the party. But the governors said both would have to resign than and pave the way for Taofeek Arapaja, deputy national chairman (south), to be in charge of the party. “They said it is about consensus for the good of the party. Atiku told them that he would think about it and get back within two weeks,” another source said. “They also said that in 2011, Okwesilieze Nwodo resigned and paved the way for Haliru Mohammed Bello to become national chairman because the party’s presidential was coming to the south through Dr Goodluck Jonathan.” Ayu is also faced with another brewing problem. An insider told TheCable that some members of the NWC want Ayu to account for the funds that accrued to the party through the sale of forms and donations. “Some of the NWC members want an audit for about N1 billion that the party got from friends of Atiku, in addition to donates from governors and sale of nomination forms,” the insider said. The opposition party and APC raked in billions of naira through the sale of forms in the build-up to their primary elections. Credit: TheCable

Trapped Funds: British Airways Blocks Travel Agents From Paying In Naira

As the issue of trapped $464m foreign airlines’ funds lingers, British Airways may stop flying to Nigeria as from December 1, 2022. The United Kingdom airline this morning closed inventory which means travel agents would not be able to issue fresh tickets for their clients, but individuals can buy tickets only online, only in dollars. CBN unveils e-Naira USSD code in Kano $464m trapped airlines’ funds: We are working on it, says FG The decision, according to BA, was to mitigate the effect of blocked funds as foreign airlines plan to take drastic action including suspension of flights to pressure the Federal Government to release their funds. Already, Emirates Airlines will suspend flight by September 1 over the same issue as the UAE carrier has over $85m trapped in Nigeria. The National Executive Council of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA) confirmed the development with regards to British Airways. The Association advised its members not to issue or pay for tickets beyond December following the new development and deadline issued to Nigerian government by BA. The NANTA memo read: “The National Executive Council of NANTA just concluded a business meeting with British Airways and British Airways conveys assurance that it remains committed to servicing the needs of travel agencies in Nigeria. “As members may be aware that British Airways closed inventory this morning, please be informed that, this inventory closure is a necessary action taken by British Airways to mitigate increase of their trapped funds. “However, British Airways provides reassurance that it is still flying in and out of Nigeria and is currently seeking earnest solutions to adress the demands of its customers.” In another development, another communication to the travel agents revealed that tickets can only be issued online with payment made in dollars. “The above message is the new development with regards to British airways. Tickets will be issued in USD henceforth and only online. “They have also given the Nigerian government a deadline in December. By which time if payment isn’t made, they will stop all flights into and out of Nigeria. “Please do not pay for or issue tickets beyond December. We will update you as soon as we receive any new developments,” the communication read.
