Strike: Abiodun appeals to FG, ASUU to resolve impasse

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has appealed to the Federal Government and members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to find ways of resolving the crisis that led to the ongoing strike by ASUU in the interest of Nigerian students and the nation in general. Abiodun, who made the appeal on Thursday, at the inauguration of the Governing Councils of the state-owned tertiary institutions, held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, decried the prolonged strike, which according to him has done more harm to the nation’s education sector. The governor said, “Let me add my voice for a quick resolution to the lingering crisis between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). We can all see the effects in the unresolved crisis not only in our education system but all sectors of our economy. These students are out of school and we all know that an idle mind is an available workshop for the devil”. “This is no more a matter of who is right or who is wrong, it is a matter of what is good for the youths of our nation. I, therefore, appeal to both sides to find a meeting point and resolve this crisis for the good of our youths and our nation in general”, he pleaded. He, however, urged the newly inaugurated council members of the tertiary institutions in Ogun State to synergize with the management of their various institutions. Abiodun further charged them to look into how to surpass what the administration inherited by placing the schools in vantage position to compete with similar institutions around the world. “I want you to look at how do we ensure that Tai Solarin University of Education is no just the first university of education in Nigeria, but continue to be the best in Nigeria and one the top universities in the world. “We must not be satisfied with the 24th ranking of the Olabisi Onabanjo University out of 157 in Nigeria as at 2022, but how to restore the glory of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ojere, Abeokuta in the area of Mass Communication and related courses. We must ensure that the management of these institutions in the area of infrastructure, curriculum planning and other areas are in tandem with the development needs of our state”, the governor emphasised. He further tasked the council members on the need to offer quality advice to the state government, entrench improved and newer courses of efficiency and effectiveness in running the affairs of their respective institutions. The governor also asked them to use their connections and expertise to drive development through a robust Public Private Partnership initiative. On steps taken to reposition the educational sector in the state, Abiodun said 24,000 pieces of furniture had been distributed to all public primary and secondary schools, while the running cost to public primary and secondary schools had been increased to 120 percent. He added that his administration has approved the Ogun State Education Intervention Fund (OGSEIF) to the tune of N200m, as a Special Intervention Fund for the dducation sector, while 5,000 interns from the Ogun Teach Intervention Programme had been employed to fill vacancies in primary, secondary and technical colleges in the State. Other interventions, according to the governor include; repositioning and construction of Central Education Management Information System (EMIS) for data gathering, analysis and presentation, approval of autonomy for the State Agency for Mass Education; and approval for the composition of the Board of the Ogun State Library. “In the area of education in particular, we have invested heavily in infrastructure, human capital development, curriculum development and so on, at all strata of our education sector. Our administration’s direct interventions can be seen on the immediate approvals for the release of the promotion of primary and secondary school teachers for 2016 and 2017. We have also cleared 2018, 2019 and 2020 promotion exercises. Our Teaching Service is already compiling the list of our teaching and non-teaching staff eligible for 2021 and 2022 promotion exercises”, the governor noted. Responding, the Chairman, Governing-Council of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Professor Toyin Ashiru, thanked Governor Abiodun for giving them the opportunity to serve the state, promising that the governing boards of all the state owned schools would reinvigorate its internally generated revenue in order to reduce the financial burden off the state government. While promising to justify the confidence reposed in them, Ashiru assured that the council members would work assiduously in ensuring that tertiary education is taken to an enviable position in the state. Earlier in his opening remarks, the Commissioner for Education Science, and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, said the inauguration of the governing council would ensure proper management of the institutions and act as an impetus to achieve the vision of the state government in the education sector.

Miss Bisola Aina, a 300 level student of Ekiti State University (EKSU), said calling off the strike was long overdue because the Federal Government was not yielding to their demands. Aina appealed to members of the union to suspend the strike and allow the government to come with its proposal on how their demands would be meant. She said that many of them have been stranded, idle and frustrated staying at home. Kayode Oni, a 200 level student of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, urged both ASUU and Federal Government to find a lasting solution to end the strike. Oni explained that the students are beginning to get angry with the lecturer for not listening to the proposal by the government. “We are tired and angry with our lecturers’ behaviours for not accepting the proposal by the Federal Government. “I want to appeal to ASUU to suspend its prolonged strike and allow us resume to our various universities without any further delay,” he said. Bayo Fatoki, a 400 level student of University of Jos, said that the lecturers are equally suffering but the students are suffering the most. Fatoki said that if not for the strike, he ought to have graduated because he had finished his project and waiting for his final examination. “I want to appeal to the Federal Government, ASUU and stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the prolonged strike,” he added. Miss Omowunmi Ojo, a 200 level student of the University of Ibadan, said the deplorable condition of education in Nigeria calls for urgent intervention by the Federal Government. She urged both parties to resolve their differences and end the prolonged strike for the interest of the students, who have been abandoned and frustrated.

2023: APC chieftain confirms Tinubu met Wike in London, insists meeting “fruitful”

A former National Welfare Secretary of the APC, Kabir Masari, has confirmed that the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, met with the Governor of River State, Nyesom Wike of Rivers State in London. Mr Masari, who was the the placeholder for APC vice presidential position, said the meeting was fruitful. Mr Wike, who was a contestant in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primary and lost to a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has been at loggerheads with his party’s presidential candidate over the choice of his running mate. He previously met with top APC members including the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, Aliyu Wamakko, the governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, as well as his Ondo and Lagos counterparts, Rotimi Akeredolu, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, among others. In an interview with BBC Hausa, Mr Masari said the former Governor of Lagos State met Mr Wike as part of the 2023 calculations. “Yes, it’s true they (Messrs Tinubu and Wike) met and they would continue to meet by God’s grace. The meeting was connected to the 2023 general elections and we now know His Excellency Nyesom Wike is going to work for us (Tinubu’s team) and we would win easily,” he said. He said the Rivers Governor didn’t need to join the APC before he can help the party to succeed in the presidential contest. “Well, I can’t say whether he would defect to APC or not but he doesn’t need to decamp to APC to work for us. You know Wike is a big-time politician, a sitting governor with control of his state and even other States because of his style of leadership and the good understanding he has with people and other politicians,” he said. When reminded that the PDP has also reached out to Mr Wike to settle their rift, Mr Masari said he couldn’t predict the future but the meeting with Messrs Tinubu and Wike was “fruitful.” “I don’t know what would happen in the near future but from what we’ve seen and know so far, the meeting was fruitful. We will work with him and he would be useful to us… Don’t forget that it was APC that caused the failure of APC in Bauchi, it was members of the party that led to the defeat of the Governor from their own party. In Adamawa too. So what I want people to understand, someone can still assist you even without joining your party if he wants to,” he said.
