Lawan Seeks ‘Speedy Justice’ For Slain Yobe Cleric

Senate President Ahmad Lawan has urged relevant authorities, particularly the police, to ensure speedy justice for the Islamic Cleric in Yobe State, Sheikh Goni Aisami, who was alleged to have been killed by a soldier on Friday. Lawan made the appeal on Wednesday while on condolence visit to the family of the late Cleric in Gashua, Yobe State, according to a statement signed by his spokesperson, Ola Awoniyi. The Senate President and his entourage joined the family members to offer prayers for the repose of the late Sheikh after which he spoke to journalists. “I’m taking this opportunity to urge the authourities, the Police particularly, to ensure speedy justice for the late Sheikh. “And I want to at this point commend our people for remaining calm and peaceful and that is what we are known for in this part of the country. “But I must insist that justice must be done for the murder of our Sheikh. “The Sheikh was my Special Assistant on Religious Affairs and I worked with him very closely over the years. We pray Almighty Allah to grant him Aljannah Firdaus. “Killings like this are not normal, are not usual in this part of the country. Here in Yobe North particularly. Therefore, we must do everything possible to arrest this kind of situation. “When we have to recruit soldiers, police and other security agencies, we must profile, we must scrutinise to ensure that we don’t recruit people of questionable character, people that have very criminal background. This is very important and very imperative. “I want to also assure everyone that we will continue to pursue this case until justice is done. “As for the security situation across the country, I can say that in the last three weeks or so, I have witnessed some improvement in the security situation across the country. “We in the National Assembly will continue to support the executive arm of government and particularly support our Armed Forces and other security agencies to ensure that they protect life and property of Nigerians. “The situation may be serious, may be dire but our determination, by the Grace of God, will overwhelm the challenges that we face in the area of security as a country. “I want to urge Nigerians to continue to be patient with us, to continue to pray for us, those of us in government. We are not going to relent until Nigeria is secured,” Lawan said. The Senate President also seized the opportunity to pay similar condolence visits to the families of late Alhaji Musa Kazir and Late Hon. Kobir Maimota who were also two prominent indigenes that died recently.

Abike Dabiri: Outcome of investigation into Itunu Babalola’s death will shock Nigerians

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), says the outcome of investigation into the death of Itunu Babalola, the Nigerian lady who was ‘wrongfully jailed’ in Cote D’Ivoire, will shock many. Dabiri-Erewa disclosed this while responding to questions at a media briefing at the state house in Abuja on Thursday. Speaking on efforts made by the commission to get justice for the deceased, Dabiri-Erewa said a Nigerian who claimed to be investigating the circumstances surrounding Babalola’s death visited her before her demise. The NIDCOM chairperson said Babalola might have been implicated by those who she regards as friends.   Dabiri-Erewa also lamented that the lack of CCTV footage has made it difficult to ‘really’ identify the suspect whom she described as ‘dark, male who had a relationship with the girl’. “The case is in court and I would not want to pre-empt what is in court but there are some sad things about that,” she said. “Somebody visited her before she died, I’m saying this for the first time and that person is a Nigerian.   “If there was CCTV, they would tell us who that Nigerian is, and it’s one person who has been going about saying that he’s doing some investigations. It’s deeper than that. “When that comes out, you may be shocked, and again, because she’s late and the father is still mourning, it’s difficult but somebody, a Nigerian who claims to be investigating had a relationship with that girl and visited that girl and something happened to her. “If it was a developed country, there would be CCTV and they would point that guy out. So, they’re still looking at it. “I don’t think the police in Cote D’Ivoire did anything, sometimes we’re our biggest enemies. It’s deep, loaded but something deeper happened to that girl that goes right back to who she called her friend. Who were her friends? Who implicated her? Who went to visit her? Some male… dark…that claims he’s investigating.”

2023: Nigerians ‘ll be free from bondage if we vote for Peter Obi — Kenneth Okonkwo

As the 2023 general election gathers momentum, veteran Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo, has said Nigerians would be free from bondage if they vote for the Labour Party and her Presidential candidates cum 2023. Okonkwo, who stated this during a meeting with Labour Party’s national executives and Dynamic Ambassadors for Peter Obi (DAPO), in Abuja, said ‘a new Nigeria is possible,’ under the leadership of Peter Obi and Datti Baba Ahmed. Recall that on Tuesday, the ace actor dumped the All Progressives Congress, APC, and joined the Labour Party over the presidential Muslim-Muslim ticket. However, Kenneth Okonkwo in his acceptance speech, said, “There’s something I always see anytime I come across the candidacy of Peter Obi and Datti Baba Ahmed, ‘a new Nigeria is possible.’ “I see a new Nigeria where bullets will be taken away from the hand of these children and replace it with books. I see a new Nigeria where guns will be taken away from the hand of these lovely Nigerian children and replace it with garment of productivity, I am confident and I see a new Nigeria where people will no longer be sharing the cake and of course there’s nothing to share anymore, yet I still see a new Nigeria where on baking the cake for equitable distribution to every Nigerian. “And why am I confident in seeing this new Nigeria? Because there’s a man who has wowed to change and transform this nation from a consumption nation to a production nation and from the antecedent of this same man whatever he said he will do he has done. “Why am I confident? Because this man chose a party that is called Labour party, Labour is known for productivity, I am surprised that Labour is agonizing when it can organize. Labour still remains the most organized group in this country. On the day Labour stands up in Nigeria the new Nigeria we’ve been praying for will come alive. “Today you cannot travel by land, it’s either you’re killed, kidnapped or terrorized, we cannot travel by air because it’s too expensive, a return ticket will take you the sum of Two Hundred Thousand naira (N200,000) Abuja to Lagos, on economy. “You cannot travel by rail because it is grounded. We can’t even service our debt because they have borrowed us into bondage, God forbid I can no longer live in bondage.” On his part, Chairman Labour Party Federal Capital Territory, Comr. Peter Chukwuemeka in his remark expressed joy and humility over the assignment to represent the National Chairman of the party. According to him, “I’m overwhelmed and privileged to represent the celebrity National Chairman of our great party in the person of Barrister. Julius Abure and all the national working committee of Labour Party. “Labour Party has become a mega party, when you see a political party without a president, senator, House of Representatives, governor, House of Assembly Chairman or Local government Chairman competing with major and established political parties, something is about to happen.” Also present at the event were Deputy State Chairman FCT LP, Comr. ASUU rejects N10,000 varsity support levy by parents

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has rejected the proposed payment of N10, 000 per session by each parent to assist the Federal Government in making more funds available for universities. The PUNCH had on Wednesday reported that the National Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria proposed the levy and sought an audience with the government over the lingering strike by ASUU. “We have submitted a letter to the Office of the Education Minister, seeking an audience where we hope to discuss a proposal. “We are proposing a sum of N10, 000 per parent every session that will be directly paid to the universities. That will be our own contribution apart from other statutory payments in making more funds available to the universities. “It can be called parent support levy for universities. We are at the receiving end of the industrial action. We plead with the ASUU and Federal Government to immediately resolve their differences,” NAPTAN’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Ademola Ekundayo, disclosed this during an interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday. But reacting to the proposed levy on Thursday, ASUU’s National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the parents should intervene by joining the body in mounting pressure on the apex government. Osodeke made the call while speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday. “I think what this association should be doing is to tell the government to perform its function. They should put pressure on the government to use Nigerians’ money to fund education as it is done in other countries. “We can’t be calling ourselves the giant of Africa and we are the worst in education. You see students from Nigeria going to Ghana, Benin Republic, Togo, and other small countries to study but nobody from these countries is coming to Nigeria to study. “So they should add to the pressure coming from ASUU to ensure that the government prioritise education. That is more important than the N10,000”.

BREAKING: Police commission union declares indefinite strike

The Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission has issued a notice of indefinite strike to the management of the commission over a breach of agreement, the Punch is reporting The union noted that the strike will commence with effect from Monday, August 29, 2022. Chairman of the Joint Service Union, PSC chapter, Mr Adoyi Adoyi, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent on Thursday. The notice is coming amidst disagreement between workers of the commission, the Chairman of the commission, Mr Musiliu Smith, and the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, on which body should be responsible for recruitment, promotion, and appointment of constables and officers. He noted that the IGP and other police chiefs in connivance with the chairman of the PSC, have overruled the constitutional duty of the PSC. Adoyi added that the IGP has allegedly taken it upon himself to carry out the functions of the PSC in flagrant disregard of the Nigeria constitution, a verdict of the Appeal Court, and the authorities of the PSC. Adoyi said, “We’re embarking on an indefinite strike from Monday, August 29, to show how discontent with the way the PSC is being run by the chairman of the commission, and the flagrant disregard for the constitution, the court of law, and the PSC by the IGO, Usman Baba. “The duties of the PSC are spelled out in the constitution, but the IGP has disregarded all of that, and has taken over the duties of the commission. He appoints and promotes at will as opposed to what is stated in the constitution. “According to the constitution, the appointment, promotion, and recruitment of police officers and constables are the prerogative of the PSC, not the IGP.”

Could Wike be the end of Atiku’s sixth run for president?

By Fredrick Nwabufo. Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, could be the kryptonite of Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Wike has remained implacable and untrammelled. And he seems determined to take his pound of flesh after his humiliation by Atiku. Wike will not relent until he draws blood. There is a method to Wike’s madness. Wike cannot be dismissed or ignored. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) blundered when it discarded a sacerdotal principle – the zoning precept. Since 1999 zoning has governed the PDP’s power distribution. It was by dint of this that Umaru Musa Yar’Adua became the party’s standard bearer in 2007 and president after Olusegun Obasanjo. Goodluck Jonathan’s ascendancy was an accident of time and the making of a benevolent fate. The distortion of the power character and geography was to be corrected by the PDP in 2015 as Jonathan had reportedly agreed to do only a single term. Power was expected to return to the north in 2015, but Jonathan chose to seek re-election. This fractured the PDP and spun a web of palace conspiracies and subterranean plots, leading to his deracination. Naturally, after eight years of power residency in one section of the country, it is expected to orbit to another. It is hard to explain and farcical to rationalise PDP’s gaucherie. How will the party convince Nigerians to subsist with the current geography of power after eight years of the present leadership? It will be a tough sell. After the party’s presidential primary election in May, it was expected that winner would begin reconciliation and rapprochement with other hopefuls. The primary election was not a contest of popularity, really, but a clash of cash. It so happened that the man with the biggest trove of cash took the prize. The PDP was divided by the outcome of that exercise. It should not have been. It is hypocritical parroting, ‘’One Nigeria’’ and ignoring the violation of this essence by the PDP. It is a mockery of common sense. I believe Wike reserves the right to be upset by the duplicity of the PDP. He should have been left alone to lick his wounds after the presidential primary election. But he was led on with a phantom vice-presidential bait. At the behest of Atiku, the PDP set up a panel to pick a vice-presidential candidate. The panel recommended Wike, but Atiku preferred another candidate. Despite the insistence of the national working committee (NWC) of the party on the nomination of Wike for the position, Atiku refused. In an interview with Arise TV, Atiku said he cannot work with Wike. According to him, he needs ‘’someone amiable’’ to work with. So, why the pantomime when it was clear Wike is not wanted? Why not allow the man to nurse his frayed ego in peace? Why add insult to injury? Why toss a carrot before him, only to snatch it away the moment he tries to take a bite? Why the double-decker humiliation? And when the governor was taciturn and appeared to have moved on, some supporters of the PDP presidential candidate were taunting him. Really, it seems the PDP is yet to learn any valuable lesson from defeat. What is happening now is reminiscent of pre-2015 elections when the party succumbed to morbid indulgences and gutted itself. Seven governors left the PDP in the build-up to the general election, sealing the doom of the party. It is happening again. As it appears, the party may lose its strongholds – the south-east, the south-south and even the north-central. Peter Obi’s rocketing movement has left the PDP vulnerable in much of the south. The years of unrequited loyalty to the PDP by the south-east are gone. Wike has obviously broken away from the pack — and with him are some PDP governors. This imperils PDP’s star-crossed presidential bid. Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), appears attuned to the windfall in the chaos, and he is seizing the moment. It is unlike Tinubu to let a good opportunity go to waste. Jagaban is meeting with Wike somewhere in Europe – this is while Atiku had refused to meet with the Rivers governor – until the recent ‘’rendezvous’’. Tinubu, obviously, takes his presidential bid with gravitas. He understands the times and the need for seeking allies and not foes in an election season. Wike is horse-trading to work against Atiku in the 2023 elections. Only a party that is self-secured in second place will ignore this evolving political artistry. Wike is everything everyone says he is. He is uncouth, caustic, brash, vacuous, insipid, vindictive, and could be infantile. But no one can take away the influence he wields in his state, in the south-south and among some governors in the PDP. He has profitable political capital. It is hard to see how the PDP can upend this trajectory to its favour. Wike’s boat appears to have sailed on.
