2023: I only recognise APC candidates… defectors on their own, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says he will only campaign for candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections. Garba Shehu, presidential spokesperson, said Buhari will not recognise former members of the party or those who have court cases against APC candidates. In a statement on Wednesday, the president was quoted as saying he will not betray or undermine the APC ahead of the elections. “The Presidency wishes to put it on record, and at the same time, reassure faithful party members that President Muhammadu Buhari remains a “disciplined soldier” of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and will, in all the coming elections, support only those candidates fielded by the party and no other,” the statement reads. Advertisement “This is a warning to decamped party members and some others who are still in court against official candidates of the APC that they are on their own and nobody outside the party tent should link what they are doing to President Buhari. “The President wishes to be quoted as saying that he is the “occupant of the high office of the President by the Grace of God who used the instrumentality of the APC to bring him to power with a historic verdict in 2015.” “In 2019, he was returned with a bigger majority. For the first time, a non-PDP government came to power with a huge majority after 16 years of the Fourth Republic. His constant refrain is: “I will not betray or undermine my party by supporting candidates other than those of the APC.” “This statement is not against any particular candidate. However, our stand is clear that only those candidates fielded by the All Progressives Candidates, APC will enjoy the support of the President and they are the ones he will campaign for. However, we welcome support for our candidates at all levels by other parties.” The president was quoted as saying he will continue to support the party at all levels “to enforce discipline, synchronization and coordination”. Buhari also cautioned presidential villa officials against “engaging in loose talk”, while urging them “to resist making controversial statements” that may hurt the party and the government. The president advised them not to provide “a weapon for the opposition to use against the administration, the party or its candidates” in the election.

2023: Wike will work for Tinubu – Masari

Alhaji Ibrahim Masari,a close associate of the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had said that after meeting the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike in London, they are confident that Wike would now work for the success of Tinubu come 2023. Alhaji Ibrahim Masari who spoke from London, told the BBC Hausa on Wednesday, that it’s true Tinubu met Wike and they would continue to meet in due course. According to him,” the meeting was basically on the 2023 Presidential election and by God’s grace, we are going to work with His Excellency, Governor Nyeson Wike ,he will assist and we are going to win the election with ease,by the will of God. “ Asked on whether Wike was intending to join the APC in order to assist Tinubu win election, Masari said he was not in position to say if Wike would join the PDP , adding that Wike does not have to leave the PDP before he could assist anyone that he wants to help. ” This is because Wike is a big politician, a Governor and he has control in some other states apart from his state. He is good to the people and has associated with his people peacefully. By the grace of God, he will be of help to us.” Asked if the new political romance would last considering the fact that Atiku’s camp too,is still trying to pacify Wike, Masari explained that ” well, only God knows what would happen next. But what we are seeing now, what has transpired is that we are going to work with Wike and he will be useful to us.” ” If you could remember, it was APC that caused the failure of APC in Bauchi, it was members of the party that led to the defeat of the Governor from their own party. In Adamawa too. So what I want people to understand, someone can still assist you even without joining your party if he wants to.” “Furthermore, with the widespread acceptance of His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Nigerians, I can assure you by the will of God he is going to win the election, with or without help. But there is the Hausa adage which says even if you’re beautiful, you should add to it by taking bath. So it’s not only about Wike, we are also talking with many other Governors.” He said their political alliance with Wike would not make the likes of former Minister Rotimi Amaechi and other APC members in Rivers State to feel sidelined, as they are ever ready to carry all of them along. ” Nobody will do anything that will hurt Rotimi Amaechi, he is a party member, a formidable member of the APC,’ he said.

2023 elections: Nigerians will rejoice, says Kumuyi

The General Overseer of the Deeper Life Christian Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has declared that only God will determine the next president of the country, come 2023. Also, the cleric noted that everything is in the hands of God concerning the change of power next year and that Nigerians will rejoice at the end of it. Kumuyi made the declaration on Wednesday at the palace of Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, when he visited the monarch, Oba Victor Kiladejo. The visit was part of the activities of the church to herald a six-day crusade tagged, ” Global Crusade with Kumuyi”, holding in the ancient town. I want to tell you, no pin drops anywhere in the world without God’s knowledge and nobody goes ahead without God’s control. He controls everything that happens in the world. “Would there be an election next year? would there not be an election? Who will emerge as the president of our country? Who will come out as governor of each of the states? Known unto God before the beginning of time and what we want in answer to the problem of contentious people in our land. What He wants will come true. When a lion is coming, no rat stands in his way and says you can’t pass. “When the Almighty says this is what it is, for Nigeria in particular, for 2023 in particular, no elephant of a man can stand in its way. God’s will will be done and we will all rejoice.” Speaking on the programme, Kumuyi explained that the church chose Ondo the town for the crusade because God Himself chose the venue. “At this time, we are choosing Ondo City because God has led us to do so. He, God choose Ondo for GCK,” he simply stated. In his remarks, the Osemawe said the crusade would benefit the town and the state in general. FEC awards N718m contracts to private security firms to secure Abuja rail tracks, stations

The federal executive council (FEC) has approved N718.19 million to two security outfits to protect the 45-kilometre Abuja rail tracks and stations. Mohammed Bello, minister of the FCT, said this on Wednesday while speaking with journalists at the end of the FEC meeting. In March, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) suspended its Abuja-Kaduna train operations after some gunmen planted explosives on the rail track and attacked passengers. Bello said the security services are majorly to protect key infrastructures on the rail tracks, the signalling and communication equipment as well as the electrical system. He added that the security agencies are Messers Al-Ahali Security Guards Limited and Messers Seaguard Security and Protective Company Limited. “I presented a memo at the Federal Executive Council meeting of today, and the council approved a contract for the provision of security services for the Abuja Light Rail Mass Transit System,” he said. “These companies are going to provide security to the entire 45 kilometres of track including 12 stations. “Al-Ahali security guard Limited is going to secure 27.4 kilometres of the track, covering eight stations at the cost of N407,214,000 over two years, while Seaguard Securities and Protective Company Limited are going to secure 18 kilometres of the rail tracks including four railway stations and that is at a cost of N310,979,250.” On his part, Babatunde Fashola, minister of works and housing, said the council approved two memoranda for N11 billion. “The first was a contract for the reconstruction of the Mushin-NNPC-Apapa-Oshodi road, that is the road that goes through Isolo to Ejigbo, at the sum of N11,166,270,197.85 to Strabic construction company, with a completion period of 20 months,” Fashola said. He also said the council approved the demands by state governments for refunds on an intervention made previously before the current administration on federal roads and before the directive that there should be no more intervention by states on federal roads.

Main strike starts now, ASUU chairpersons insist

The chairman of the Academic Staff Union of the Universities, ASUU, at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, Comrade Christian Opata, and his counterpart at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Prof. Chinedu Aguba, have insisted that the Union is not cowed by the “no work, no pay” threat by the Federal Government. The duo spoke after ASUU Congress at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, UNEC, on Wednesday, insisting that the industrial action embarked upon by the members of the Union since February 14, 2022, would continue indefinitely if the Federal Government refuses to attend to all the contentious issues which led to the strike action. The ASUU chairpersons also said that the Federal Government lacks the legal right to recognize the Congress of University Academics, CONUA, which is wooing it to substitute ASUU, adding that the Union would equally wage legal war with the government should it consider the option of proscription. “Nigerians who have been listening to the media propaganda waged by the Federal Government maybe carried away by such propaganda. ASUU has tried all it can to resolve the issues leading to the ongoing strike action, but the Federal Government is also doing all it can to scuttle the efforts of the Union. Be that as it may, one thing that is pertinent is that truth cannot be hidden, if you bury it today, it will germinate tomorrow. “Our bone of contention with the government of Nigeria is that a government signed an agreement with the Union as far back as 2019 and that agreement has been reneged on consistently and persistently by the same government. The government has been paying deaf ear each time the Union called for renegotiation of the agreement and it has also toyed with the reports of all the committees set up to find lasting solutions to recurrent ASUU strikes in Nigeria. “Yet, we are talking of the education sector which drives the economy. The question is, how do we as a nation move forward? The principle of collective bargaining is no longer there, respect for negotiated agreement is equally no longer there. “Some students may think that ASUU is no longer fighting for them but that is not true. The truth is that there is gross dilapidated and insufficient facilities across the federal universities. A classroom made for 50 students are being occupied by 300 of them now and hostels are equally insufficient. We see students standing up or hanging by the windows to take notes during lectures. What kind of education does Federal Government want those students to receive in today’s global competitive world?” Comrade Opata queried the Federal Government. He expressed surprise that the federal government is foot-draghing in adopting UTAS which it asked members of his Union to develop, adding that UTAS which is a homegrown technology would sustain national development more than any foreign application. Comrade Opata equally said that the Federal Government was preaching anarchy in Nigeria by saying that it would not pay ASUU members their outstanding six months salaries, adding that members of his Union would not attend to backlog of works accumulated during the strike action and many students may not graduate. “Federal Government said no work, no pay. ASUU can go back to classroom and refuse to attend to the backlog of works which accumulated during the strike. What it means is that many students will not graduate. Can government contain our students assuming ASUU refuse to graduate them? Is that not unleashing anarchy on the nation? We don’t want anarchy to join the security problems we are handling in Nigeria,” he said. Similarly, Prof. Aguba of ESUT who represented the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU accused the Federal Government of being insensitive to the education sector. He insisted that ASUU would continue on the strike action until the government fulfill all the agreements it reached with the Union. He said that ASUU would cling on legal fireworks to fight the Federal Government should it take the option of proscribing the Union. ” We are equally tired of living under slave wages,” he also said.

EFCC arraigns Cubana manager over $164,000 fraud

The Economics and Financial Crime Commission on Wednesday arraigned a manager with Cubana Group, Lucky Uchechukwu Ndukwe, for an offence bordering on conspiracy to launder and money laundering. Ndukwe, known better as Cubana Prime Minister, was arraigned alongside one Precious Omonkhoa Ofure before Justice Justice O.A. Fadipe of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, by the Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC. The suspects were arrested recently by EFCC operatives following credible intelligence received about their involvement in the fraudulent activity. Items recovered from them include the sum of $164, 000. 00 (One Hundred and Sixty-four Thousand Dollars), iPhone mobile devices and laptop computers. The charge against the suspect reads: “That you, Precious Omonkhoa Ofure and Lucky Uchechukwu Ndukwe, sometime in 2021 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did conspire amongst yourselves and laundered an aggregate sum of $164,000 which form part of $256,314 fraudulently obtained by false pretence from one Elena Bogomaz, a Canadian Citizen, and converted the fraudulent money into the United States Dollars with the help of a Bureau De Change Operator, which was then credited into the bank account of Casa Cubana Estate Limited and Lucky Uchechukwu Ndukwe respectively for the purchase of two and landed properties and committed an offence contrary to Section 330 of lhe Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.” During their arraignment on Wednesday, Ndukwe “pleaded not guilty”, while Ofure pleaded “guilty” to the charge. Consequently, the prosecution counsel, M.K.Bashir, reviewed the facts of the case and prayed that the defendant, Ofure, be sentenced accordingly. Delivering judgment, Justice Fadipe found Ofure guilty and sentenced him to three years imprisonment on two counts of conspiracy and money laundering, with an option of fine in the sum of N2,000,000.00 and 100 hours of community service. The judge also ordered the forfeiture of all the items recovered from the convict. Counsel to Udukwe, Chuks Arubalaeze, told the court about an application for bail on behalf of his client. Justice Fadipe granted him bail in the sum of N5,000,000.00 with two sureties in like sum. Justice Fadipe also ordered the remand of Udukwe in the correctional facility pending the perfection of his bail conditions and adjourned the case to October 28, 2022, for commencement of trial.

World Bank, US commit $3bn to Nigeria’s energy transition plan

The World Bank and the US Export-Import Bank (EximBank) say they will commit over $3 billion to the implementation of Nigeria’s energy transition plan. The international organisations made the commitment on Wednesday at the official global launching of the Energy Transition Plan by Yemi Osinbajo, vice-president. Shubham Chaudhuri, Nigeria country director, World Bank, said the international bank aims at committing over $1.5 billion towards the country’s energy transition plan. “We plan to commit over $1.5 billion towards the Energy Transition Plan on renewable energy, on power sector reforms, and potentially hydropower, on clean cooking, and wherever opportunities arise,” he said.   “The policy and institutional reforms that will be necessary are also part of the agenda and we hope to be able to provide support for the fundamentally imperative of energy access but in a way that is consistent with the energy transition, what I think of as the NEAT imperative. “The Nigerian Energy Access and Transition (NEAT) imperative is what we here at the World Bank are absolutely committed to supporting.” On his part, Adam Cortese, chief executive officer (CEO), Sun Africa, a renewable energy solutions company, said it was in the final stage of talks with the US EXIM Bank on a $1.5 billion financing package. “The launch of Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan has further accelerated our efforts, proving Nigeria to be fertile grounds for investments in the sector. We are in the final stages of discussion with US EXIM Bank on a USD 1.5 billion financing package,” Adam said. “We are truly excited about the future and we are looking forward to helping Nigeria lead by way of example in Africa.” Speaking at the official unveiling of the transition plan, Osinbajo said Nigeria’s energy transition requires a significant scale of resources which includes spending $410 billion by 2060. He added that Nigeria has set up an inter-ministerial energy transition implementation working group and is “currently engaging with partners to secure an initial $10 billion support package ahead of COP27″. At COP26 in Glasgow last year, President Muhammadu Buhari announced Nigeria’s ambition to achieve net-zero by 2060 drawing on insights from the country’s Energy Transition Plan which was developed through the Energy Transition Commission to chart out Nigeria’s unique energy transition pathway. The plan supports the country’s objectives of achieving universal access to energy by 2030 and a carbon-neutral energy system by 2060, while also providing enough energy to power the industry and other productive uses. The plan is supported by Sustainable Energy for All and the COP26 Energy Transition Council (ETC).

Yobe Murder: If Muslims Had Killed A Pastor, The Story Would Have Been Different – Cleric

The National Chairman of Islamic propagation group, Izala Movement, Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, has faulted the killing of a Yobe-based cleric by soldiers. Daily Trust had reported how Sheikh Goni Aisami was murdered by a soldier on mufti who approached him for a free ride from Gashua from Nguru in Yobe. On Tuesday, Dungus Abdulkarim, Police Public Relations Officer in Yobe, had identified the suspects arrested over the killing of the Sheik as Lance Cpl John Gabriel and Lance Cpl Adamu Gideon. Reacting to the killing of the Islamic cleric in an interview with BBC Hausa, Bala Lau said, “This is a great loss to all Muslims; the way he was murdered shows its terrorism against the Muslims Ummah. “We condemn the assassination and we call on Federal Government to quickly prosecute the assassins; let’s probe the motive of killing him. If it had happened that a Muslim killed a pastor, the story would have been different, we won’t let this go, we won’t keep quiet anymore.” Earlier, the Jama’atu Nasirl Islam (JNI) had called on the Federal Government and the leadership of the Nigerian Army to hasten the prosecution of the culprits. In a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, JNI stressed that the judgement must not only to be done but should be seen to have been done. “JNI received with utmost shock the reported assassination of Sheikh Muhammad Goni Aisami and theft of his car. To say the least, the Sheikh’s murder was dastardly, reprehensible, and stands condemned, given the kind hearted nature of the Sheikh, who in his own volition offered the assailants a ride in the same car. “Surprisingly, both John Gabriel and Adamu Gideon resolved to rob him of his car. Yet the Muslim Ummah did not in any way declare that it was an attack by Christian terrorists in military garb, indubitably, if this had happened to a Christian clergy, CAN and its cronies would have been on top of their voices that Muslim terrorists have killed a Pastor or Reverend and the media would also have been awash with such information. “Sometimes in 2018, Major General Idris M. Alkali was brutally killed by the Birom ethnic group of Du Community (a predominantly Christian suburb) in Plateau state and his remains thrown into a pond, yet nothing was reportedly done as punishment against the perpetrators. “Same with the Rukuba Road carnage which resulted in the massacre of about 22 innocent, defenseless Muslims returning from Bauchi State on their way to Ikare, Ondo State enroute Jos, in addition to a series of such brutalities and impunities against innocent Muslims. Yet, the Nigerian Muslims have repeatedly remained patient, despite a series of lies, hate campaigns and even outright provocations.” President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered a probe of the incident.
