Russia detains opposition politician for Ukraine comments

Russian police on Wednesday detained one of the last opposition figures still in the country and not behind bars, according to state media, after he reportedly criticised Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine. Politician Yevgeny Roizman, former mayor of the Urals city of Yekaterinburg, was detained for “discrediting” the Russian army in comments about Moscow’s military intervention in Ukraine. “Roizman was arrested early in the morning” at his home in Yekaterinburg, state news agency TASS said, quoting local law enforcement. “A criminal case has been launched against him for discrediting the Russian army,” it added. The charges are punishable by up to 10 years in jail. A dozen armed police in camouflage on Wednesday burst into the 59-year-old’s home, according to a video posted on the Mash Telegram channel, reputed to be close to the Russian security services. A police source quoted by TASS said the investigation was launched because of a video criticising Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, published on the politician’s YouTube channel. Roizman has already been fined three times for criticising Russia’s offensive in Ukraine. The politician’s lawyer Vladislav Idamzhapov was not allowed to enter his client’s apartment where a search was underway, TASS said. “It is a violation of the right to defence,” Idamzhapov was quoted as saying by TASS. Opening his window for a few seconds, Roizman shouted to reporters gathered outside that he was being prosecuted for “discrediting” the army. In a recent interview with AFP, Roizman said he has “no illusions” and understood that he could face arrest for his views. “But I also have no fear,” he said. Roizman was a lawmaker between 2003 and 2007. In 2013, he became Russia’s highest-profile opposition mayor and held the position for five years. Last year he was sentenced to nine days in jail for urging people to join demonstrations in support of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. Almost all of President Vladimir Putin’s prominent political opponents have either fled the country or are in jail. Recently two opponents remaining in Russia, councillor Ilya Yashin and activist Vladimir Kara-Murza, were placed in detention for denouncing the Ukraine conflict, facing up to ten years in prison.

I’m APC Ebonyi south senatorial candidate not Umahi, says Ann Agom-Eze

Ann Agom-Eze says she is still the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Ebonyi south senatorial seat. She said she has not been expelled from the party, and that no notice of such was sent to her by the party’s state chapter. Agom-Eze is the main challenger of David Umahi, governor of Ebonyi, for the ticket. On July 22, a federal high court in Abakaliki dismissed a suit filed by Umahi, asking the court to recognise him as the APC candidate for the senatorial district. However, the court recognised Agom-Eze, who came second in the May 28 senatorial primary election for Ebonyi south, but ordered that a fresh primary election be conducted within 14 days. The APC conducted a fresh primary election on July 31, and Umahi was declared the winner. Following this development, the Ebonyi chapter of the party announced the expulsion of Agom-Eze from the party for “rebelliously jeopardising her membership by violating APC’s constitution”.   Reacting to this on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, Agom-Eze said though the matter remains in court, she is the bonafide senatorial candidate of the party. “As far as I am concerned, I’m the candidate because the judgment of the 22nd of June proclaimed me the candidate. So, for me, I am the candidate. Though the case is still in court and ongoing, I’m still the candidate,” she said. “I haven’t been expelled from the party. You and I know that to expel a person, that person has to be informed but I haven’t been informed. It was supposed to have come in writing, letting me know about the offences. “And I should be able to respond. It is consequent on my response that I will be invited by a committee to look at those issues before a committee is taken. “I also did not sign any letter of withdrawal also, I didn’t know where they got it from. I also didn’t lie in court and that’s up for the court to decide.”

Tinubu’s govt’ll be inclusive, fair to all — APC tells Nigerians

L The All Progressives Congress, APC, has assured the youths that when elected, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s administration would be inclusive and fair to all Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic religious and political affiliations. The Director-General, APC Youth and Students’ Council, Mazi Ezenwa Onyirimba, stated this on Tuesday during a sensitisation visit to Connected Development Initiative, Abuja. According to him, Tinubu’s antecedents indicate that he had previously ran a government that was highly adjudged as inclusive in terms of the demography, the religion and the background of political appointees. The APC leader said, “When he (Tinubu) was the governor of Lagos, the greater percentage of his cabinet members were under the age of 40. It was a good development for the youths of Lagos at that time. “The structure of his cabinet also showed that he picked people from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds. At the end of the day, they collectively succeeded.” He noted the current challenges rocking the nation and expressed confidence that the APC presidential candidate will address them, if he takes over the helm of affairs in this nation. In his remarks, Mr Hamza Lawal, the Chief Executive of Connected Development (CODE), chided the nation’s leaders for embezzling the commonwealth of the people plunging the nation into deep woes. “The current script is not working. There’s a global campaign by the UN SDGs which talks about flipping the scripts. I think that it should even start from Nigeria. Our current script is not working, if we look at our current challenges which insecurity and unemployment,” he said. Lawal, therefore, called on all presidential candidates to reserve at least 50 percent of all intended cabinet positions for the youth in the spirit of inter-generational equity. He added, “It is important that as we grow as a people, we must stop the blame-game. The older generation continues to see the youths as the problem and vice versa. “Honestly speaking, Nigerians want a president whose cabinet is made up of under 40’s, because we are an upwardly mobile and technologically driven generation. It will only be fair that if we constitute over 50 percent of the eligible voters, we should also make at least 50 percent of the cabinet members.”

FG depriving youths education – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has accused the Federal Government of deliberate attempts to deprive Nigerian youths of access to qualitative education. This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Muhammad Sani Gaya and Secretary, Murtala Muhammad of ASUU, Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and made available to newsmen on Wednesday. The union noted that the body language and antics of the government were indications that the government was out to completely destroy education in the country, especially tertiary education. “We are prepared and determined to continue enduring the torture and negative media campaign against our struggle in order to liberate ourselves, the young and upcoming generations of Nigerians from the deliberate efforts to deny them access to quality and affordable education. ‘’Indeed, education is the only weapon that can change society, denying our youth education is akin to destroying the nation. The intention of the FG to destroy university education in Nigeria should be vehemently resisted,’’ the statement said. The union said the use of hunger to coerce members of ASUU to suspend its indefinite strike has failed in the past and definitely will not yield any fruitful result now. “For the avoidance of doubt, the union is resolute, determined, focused and ready to continue the struggle in order to salvage the Nigerian public universities from imminent collapse. ‘’Unfortunately, the FG is blessed with enough wrong people at the right places. Irritably, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, is badly informed of the university system and dilettante with the primary duties of an academic staff. The public may note that based on laws establishing universities, an academic staff is employed to teach, conduct research and render community service. So, when ASUU embarked on strike, only the teaching component stopped, thus, the issue of imposing “no work no pay” doesn’t rightly and legally apply to academic staff.’’ According to the statement, the demands of the union are not self-serving but altruistic. “As a body of intellectuals, our union demands repositioning of our universities for greater efficiency in national development and technological advancement. “Also, massive and sustained funding for our universities; a reversal of apparent decay in the university system; and, enhanced and competitive remuneration for overworked academic staff in Nigerian universities. “Nigerians should join ASUU to ask the Federal Government to tow the path of honour by respecting the agreement it freely entered with our union.” ‘’It is paradoxical to note that while the government has acknowledged the demands of ASUU as genuine and patriotic, yet the FG under the stewardship of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has shown lack of political will, nonchalance and ill-intention towards salvaging the University System from imminent collapse arising from the comatose created by the above highlighted issues.’’ ‘’It is quite disheartening that ASUU, this time, is dealing with an insincere and dishonest FG that claims to be fighting corruption but is surrounded by corrupt elements whose major preoccupation is denying the citizenry reasonable living standard and quality education.’’ the statement said.

Rotational Number Plates Are Illegal, Says FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps has declared rotational number plates illegal across the federation as only one number plate is assigned to duly registered car owners at any time. A statement on Tuesday signed by the Assistant Corps Marshal, Bisi Kazeem revealed that the corps’ attention had been drawn to a video circulating on social media which displayed a vehicle with rotational number plates. The communique also read “The vehicle number plates on display are KUJ-304BV, while the other side which was automatically flipped carries a number tagged presidency with the following details, 01B-266FG.” The FRSC Ag. Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali Biu, has ordered a full investigation into the trend as FRSC does not produce a number plate with such double features, insisting that “only one number can be assigned to one vehicle and its owner at the same time.” “The Ag. Corps Marshal is also using this medium to warn Nigerians from replicating same as it is considered a criminal act which has its place in law,” it also read. FRSC recently placed a public notice on the mainstream media dissuading Nigerians and the Motoring Public regarding vehicles with unauthorised number plates as the users are not duly registered and often have sinister motives.

Rivers Govt vows to prosecute federal lawmaker over alleged illegal bunkering

The Rivers State Government has vowed to prosecute a federal lawmaker from the state, Chinyere Igwe, for alleged involvement in the illegal bunkering of petroleum products. Mr Igwe, whose filing station was reportedly sealed for involvement in illegal bunkering activities, represents Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 11. Emeka Woke, the chief of staff to Governor Nyesom Wike, made the threat at Mogho, Gokana local government area of the state during a Permanent Voters Card sensitisation and mobilisation rally. A pro-PDP group, the Grassroots Development Initiative organised the rally, according to a report by Punch newspaper. Mr Woke, in a statement issued by his media office in Port Harcourt on Monday, said no amount of blackmail would deter the state government from prosecuting the lawmaker. “Anybody who allows his business premises to be used for illegal oil bunkering, that premises will be shut down,” Mr Woke said. Governor Wike, several months ago, took up the fight against illegal oil bunkering in the state after it appeared the security agencies were complicit in the matter. Governor Wike, in January, accused the police and civil defence operatives in the state of operating an illegal refinery and asked that the officers involved be transferred out of the state. This led to the disbandment of the anti-vandal unit of the Nigeria Civil Defence in the state. The state commandant of the agency was subsequently replaced. Mr Woke also repeated the threat made by Governor Wike that the state government would demolish any hotel or event centre where “cultists gather to hold meetings”. “Whoever allows his hotel to harbour criminals bent on destabilising the state, we will deal with you according to the law,” Mr Woke said, according to the Punch report.

There are enough medical doctors in Nigeria— Ehanire assures

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, says there are actually enough medical doctors in the country but that the Federal Government is working toward replacing any medical doctor who resigns and leaves the country. Ehanire made the assertion on Tuesday in Abuja during a media conference. He also said there was no embargo on the employment of doctors and other health personnel in the country. “There is no embargo on employing doctors; where there is a need, we do. But, because there is a Civil Service regulation, there are processes before doctors are employed. “We have heard complaints of doctors who are now leaving the system but there are actually enough doctors in the system because we are producing up to 2,000 or 3,000 doctors every year in the country, and the number leaving is less than 1,000. “It is just that the employment process needs to be smoothened,” he said. The minister explained that the ministry was working with the Office of the Head of the Civil Service to use the ‘One-for-One’ employment strategy so that if one doctor or nurse resigns to go abroad another one is employed. “So, if we have one replacement then you are not likely to have a shortage. “But that has been worked out because the Head of Service had the experience that in the past when one person goes, they use the opportunity to take three and those others may not even be people who are required. “We want to use this policy so that we can reduce shortages and have our personnel back in our hospitals,” he said. Dr Deborah Bitrus-Oghoghorie of the Department of Hospital services said that the issue of the two weeks ultimatum given by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) for the Federal Government to meet the demands of the association or risk an industrial action was being looked into. According to her, they are mainly financial issues which the ministry could not solve on its own. “The issue we have with the resident doctors are mainly financial issues and because of that, we at the ministry of health cannot handle it alone. “So, what we are doing now is to facilitate resolving the issue with the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC). “We want to assure you that the ministry of health, especially the department of hospital services is working very hard to ensure that industrial action is averted,” she added. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Aug. 20, the resident doctors had given the Federal Government another two weeks’ notice within which to implement the payment of the new hazard allowance and arrears stipulated as at Dec. 22, 2021. The two weeks which took effect on Monday will elapse on Sept. 4. The said hazard allowance is contained in the circular issued by NSIWC dated Dec. 22, 2021, with reference number SWC/S/04/S.218/11/406. Some of the other demands of the association include the urgent implementation and commencement of payment of the 2022 Medical Residency Training Funds (MRTF) in full to its members using the old template. Also, that the shortfalls using the newly reviewed template be computed and incorporated /factored into the 2023 budget and paid in arrears.
