I’m Igbo’s route to presidency — Atiku

THE presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has said that he is the shortest route for the Igbo to produce President of Nigeria. Atiku, who spoke at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, during the presidential rally of PDP in Anambra State, promised to help the Igbo produce president of the country after his tenure. “I will be the stepping stone to actualise Igbo presidency if elected in 2023. “I have shown it by my actions because this is the third time I will be contesting with an Igbo man as my running mate. “If you really want to produce a President, then vote Atiku/Okowa,” he said. He also promised to make the Onitsha Port functional if elected as president in 2023. Atiku, who earlier paid a courtesy call on Governor Chukwuma Soludo on arrival in Awka, described the Anambra State governor, as a trusted partner he would need to move Nigeria forward if elected in 2023. He said that his relationship with Soludo was beyond partisan politics, but a commitment to undertake reforms in the Nigerian economy. Atiku added: “This is beyond party politics. There should be a consensus on how we move forward and I consider Governor Soludo as a partner in that respect. “It is my singular respect and honour for him to receive me in the state. In spite of our different political affiliations, there should be some core values we should agree on towards the development of our country. “I thank Governor Soludo for going beyond party politics. He didn’t shut the gate against us. We are all partners in our reform agenda as far as Nigeria is concerned. “The Governor personally told me he was not available in the state, but had to find a way back to receive me. I thank him for the opportunity and wish for God’s blessings upon his life and upon Anambra State.” In his speech, Soludo said development of Nigeria should be the utmost priority for any politician or candidate. According to him, Nigeria is bigger than any political party and the business of building the country is bigger than any politician. “In this business of building Nigeria, Anambra and Igboland should be an open place for anyone.Just give us your proposition and tell us how you will fix the country. “I am very glad you are here to canvass for votes and I believe our people will listen carefully to every word you have to tell them. “Our orientation is to have a level playing field for everyone. Politics is about development and we want the South-East to feel this development. “Reconciliation and Reconstruction are what we haven’t come to terms with. The federal highways constructed in the Shagari era are no longer motorable. My administration is already spending few billions on federal roads. “The bottom line is that we want to change the life of the average citizen. “Our people are all ears. We pray for you, for Nigeria and wish you the very best of luck.”

We’re not behind Ekweremadu’s travails – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC said the Commission was not behind the travails of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. The embattled Ekweremadu, had claimed the Commission is behind his bail refusal by the United Kingdom authorities. Ekweremadu also told Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja that EFCC was responsible for his travails at the London Court where he had been in detention over alleged organ harvest. The senator’s allegations were contained in an application he filed before the federal high court seeking an order of the court to set aside interim order granted in favour of the Federal Government for the forfeiture of his 40 properties in and outside the country. However, in its counter affidavit, the EFCC argued that the allegations made against it by Ekweremadu’s son showed he was not conversant with the proceedings in the criminal prosecution against his parents in the London court, which was why he thought the EFCC “has a hand in the predicament and travails of his parents.” The EFCC, while not denying communicating with the UK authorities, said its July 18 2022 letter to the Crown Prosecution Service, UK, was in response to the Crown Prosecution’s letter of July 17, 2022 “was a mere routine to a counterpart government agency in accordance with the global best practice of information sharing with other law enforcement and other agencies in the USA and UK “The response of the respondent to the Crown Prosecution Service was never an instigation or encouragement to the Crown Prosecution Service to detain Senator Ike Ekweremadu or anyone else, as the respondent was neither linked to nor had any interest in the subject of investigation in the U.K., namely trafficking a person with a view to exploitation, that is, organ harvesting. “Both the Metropolitan Police and Crown Prosecution Service in the U.K. are independent agencies with wide discretion to carry out their duties/responsibilities and cannot be influenced by anyone, including the respondent. “The respondent, being a foremost premiere and flagship law enforcement agency does share information and intelligence with other law enforcement agencies worldwide including the Metropolitan Police of the UK, FBI of the United States, KGB of Russia and other renowned law enforcement agencies. “As such, the innuendoes, insinuations speculations and presumptions manifest in the aforementioned paragraphs of Lloyd Ekweremadu’s affidavit are unfounded and unkind to the respondent,” it said. The EFCC, which claimed to have been investigating Ekweremadu for money laundering before now, argued that no law requires it to initiate forfeiture proceedings or criminal charges against a suspect within a particular number of years or a time frame. It added that “the filing of the instant forfeiture proceedings was a mere coincidence with the arrest of Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice N. Ekweremadu in the UK. Lawyer to the EFCC, Sylvanus Tahir, SAN argued otherwise and prayed the court to reject the motion since the case was not directed at Ekweremadu, but at the property, to which some individuals and organisations were already laying claim. Meanwhile, Justice Inyang Ekwo has adjourned till January 25 next year for the ruling.

Oyetola can’t borrow such amount; but probe, govern — Monarchs advise Adeleke

Traditional rulers have told Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State that there was need for circumspection in the debt issues between him and his predecessor, Adegboyega Oyetola. The monarchs gave the advice when Governor Adeleke was addressing the council of traditional rulers at their monthly meeting. At the meeting, Adeleke said the state was indebted to the tune of N407.32 billion besides debt owed local contractors. Reacting, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi said he was not disputing facts presented before the monarchs, but Oyetola as governor cannot borrow such huge amount. He said: “Since you said what you presented today is from the Accountant-General, I don’t want to discard it. “If somebody has put us in this mess question him, let’s give room for fair hearing. I don’t want to jump to conclusion. “But I know Oyetola cannot do such. But if he has done so, according to what was presented today, the former governor should tell us. We deserve to know the truth.” Also, the Olowu of Kuta, Oba Adekunle Oyelude urged the governor to concentrate on governance with a view to deliver on his 100 days in office as promised during his electioneering campaign. “Mr Governor, you need to leave brickbat to your party and face governance. There is a lot of landmines ahead of you. “You have to face governance with a view to meeting our expectations and your promise on 100 days in office, the days are counting,” he said.

Northern CAN tells FG to ensure smooth election without bloodbath

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Christian Association of Nigeria,CAN in Northern states and the FCT, has said government has a role to play in ensuring smooth electioneering campaign and smooth transition without bloodbath. Chairman of the Association,Rev Dr Yakubu Pam who spoke at a Prayer Summit organised in Kaduna, said it is equally the responsibility of the government to ensure a level playing field for all the candidates of all the political parties and voters during elections. Speaking at the occasion, Rev Pam said ” I am convinced that you will agree with me that this Prayer Summit is timely and auspicious as it is taking place barely few months before the 2023 general election. I sincerely welcome all the state CAN officials in the 19 Northern states and FCT as well as the Executive members of the Northern CAN to this strategic prayer summit.” “The theme of this Prayer Summit as you all know is “Managing Diversity in an Electioneering Process; .The Role of the Religious Leaders”. This theme is apt as it suggests clearly the reason why we are here.” He said the time when Christians showed apathy to political issues were over. “We are all enjoin to come out enmasse and participate in the electioneering process of our democracy ,because it is the only way we can produce good leaders of our choice to lead us at different levels. Christians should come out as never before to vote and be voted for in the forthcoming general election in February, 2023.” “It is expected that every eligible Christian should take it upon himself or herself to register with INEC and should not stop there, rather should ensure that he or she gets the PVC so that they can participate in the voting process.” “The government whether at the Federal or state levels should be proactive in addressing challenges and conflicts that might arise before, during and post-election period. The government has a role to play in ensuring smooth electioneering campaign and smooth transition without bloodbath.” “It is equally the responsibility of the government to ensure a level playing field for all the candidates of all the political parties and voters so that at the end of the day we can have a credible election that could be accepted by Nigerians and the international community. Aside the government, all the major. stakeholders who have stake in the election should work in synergy and handle issues promptly without delay.” He said the government cannot do it alone, as even the citizenry have their own role to play by making sure that the election is not marred with violence. They should shun all forms of criminality, violence and disturbances during the election. “To all intents and purposes, it is therefore pertinent at this juncture to affirm that the interest of the Northern Christians as far as the 2023 general election is concerned is nothing but to promote the unity of the north in particular and by implication Nigeria as a whole.” “The unity which guarantees inter faith harmony and peaceful co- existence should be our pride, regardless of our political leanings and affiliations. Importantly, the Northern Christians are also interested more in good governance, equity, justice and fair play for the citizenry.” “We congratulate all our leading presidential candidates for so far they have traversed the length and breadth of this country canvassing for votes from the electorates. We therefore urge all of them to set their eyes on the ball by being focus and should not be distracted. They should strive to address the issues of the economy and proffer solutions. Above all, they should shun campaign of calumny and character assassination of their opponents.” “More so, our Presidential candidates should not see the general election as a do or die affair, after all power comes from God and what will be, will be; no man runs faster than his shadow. We the religious leaders must stand firm in the face of intimidation in this era of electioneering process. We should be able to speak truth to power no matter the circumstances we find ourselves, because for every one we misled, we must answer for it someday.” “Our people look up to us for leadership, especially at this time of our democratic experience, we must not fail them, we must provide the needed leadership and direction for our people so that this House must not fall,” he said.

Court Dismisses Nwaijuba’s Suit Seeking Tinubu, Atiku’s Disqualification

The Federal High Court, Abuja has dismissed a suit by a former Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, and the incorporated trustees of Rights for all International (RAI) against the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart. Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Inyang Ekwo declined jurisdiction on the grounds that the plaintiffs lacked the legal right to have filed the suit. Justice Ekwo, who also described the suit as incompetent and proceeded to dismiss it, condemned the involvement of RAI, which claimed to be a non-government organisation, in politically motivated cases. The Judge held that, by its involvement in politically motivated cases and by extension, partisan politics, RAI went outside the objectives for which it was registered under part of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and taken steps inimical to public policy. Justice Ekwo proceeded to dissolve RAI and ordered the CAC to take over the dissolved group and deal with it in accordance with the provisions of the law. In the suit, Nwajiuba and RAI had sought, among others, to void the primaries that produced Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar as candidates of the APC and PDP for the next presidential election. They also prayed the court to replace Tinubu with the ex-minister who said he participated in APC’s primary but scored no vote. He had before then resigned as minister following the signing of the Electoral Act.

He said a level playing ground will be provided for all candidates to relay their plans to the people who will then make their choices. According to him, Anambra has numerous challenges including environmental threats and poor road infrastructure which must be part of the discussion for leadership bargain.

ICC Upholds Conviction Of Ugandan Former Child Soldier

The International Criminal Court on Thursday threw out an appeal by Dominic Ongwen, a Ugandan child soldier-turned-commander in the Lord’s Resistance Army, against his conviction and 25-year sentence for war crimes. Dominic Ongwen, who was himself abducted aged nine by the rebel group led by the fugitive Joseph Kony, was found guilty last year of murder, rape and sexual enslavement in northern Uganda during the early 2000s. “The appeals chamber unanimously rejects all the grounds of appeal” against his conviction, said Judge Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza. One ground of appeal against his sentence was rejected by majority and the rest unanimously. Dressed in a dark suit and tie, Ongwen briefly waved to the public gallery but otherwise remained impassive as he listened through headphones to the judgment. Appeals judges said that although Ongwen had been kidnapped as a “defenceless child” it did not mitigate his guilt. They also rejected his arguments about mental illness, and said he had a key role in LRA atrocities as an adult. The LRA was founded three decades ago by former Catholic altar boy and self-styled prophet Joseph Kony, who launched a bloody rebellion in northern Uganda against President Yoweri Museveni. Defence lawyers argued earlier this year that Ongwen, who is believed to be in his mid-40s but whose birth date remains unclear, had been scarred by his own experience as a youth in the LRA. “Dominic Ongwen was, and still is, a child,” Ongwen’s defence lawyer Krispus Ayena Odongo told the court in February, adding that Ongwen still believed he was “possessed” by the spirit of Kony. ICC prosecutor Karim Khan said last month said he would ask judges to confirm charges against Kony despite his absence, as the rebel leader is still at large. – ‘Scapegoat’ – Ongwen surrendered to US special forces who were hunting Kony in the Central African Republic in early 2015 and he was transferred to the ICC to face trial. The LRA’s bid to set up a state based on the Bible’s Ten Commandments killed more than 100,000 people and saw 60,000 children abducted, spreading to Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic. Ongwen, whose nom de guerre was “White Ant”, was found guilty on 61 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, which also included charges of himself turning young abductees into child soldiers. Prosecutors portrayed Ongwen as leading a reign of terror by the LRA, personally ordering the massacres of more than 130 civilians at the Lukodi, Pajule, Odek and Abok refugee camps between 2002 and 2005. Judges ruled that Ongwen had not suffered from mental illness despite his own history of being abducted on his way to school by the LRA, described by experts as one of Africa’s “most brutal militia forces”. Ongwen’s lawyers had appealed the conviction on 90 different grounds and the sentence on 11, saying there were errors in “law, fact and procedure”. “The trial was a proxy prosecution, a prosecution of the LRA using (Ongwen), a child soldier, as a scapegoat,” Krispus Ayena Odongo said in court papers. Kony should be in the dock instead of Ongwen, since it was he who had decided on the distribution of women and children as sex slaves, he added. “Kony remains unapprehended; he has escaped the tentacles of various states,” Odongo added.

PVC: Multiple Registrants Will Not Get New Cards – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says Nigerians who registered for Permanent Voters Card (PVC) more than once will not be issued new cards. INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Obo Effanga said this on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday while commenting on complaints by some Nigerians who are unable to collect their PVCs since the Commission resumed distribution for new registrants. “Remember that before now INEC had issued information that those who attempted to do multiple registrations, subsequent registrations were cancelled. Some of these persons who said they didn’t collect their cards actually fall under that and they won’t tell you that’s what happened,” Effanga said. For some people who said they were asked to check back for their PVCs in January 2023, the INEC REC wondered if they were really told that as he said there were few instances where the cards were not available and the people affected were only told to check back. He said there are still a few more cards INEC is expecting this week and the next. INEC resumed the distribution of PVCs across Nigeria on Monday and is expected to end it on Sunday, 22 January, 2023. The exercise is part of the commission’s preparation for the 2023 general elections. Large turnouts of intending voters have been reported in most PVC collection centres across the country. INEC has been encouraging all eligible voters to collect their PVC as only those with it would be allowed to vote during the 2023 general elections.

At Least 22 Dead In India After Drinking Toxic Alcohol

At least 22 people have died and several others have been hospitalised in India after drinking toxic alcohol, authorities said Thursday. The deaths happened mainly in two villages in the eastern state of Bihar, where the sale and consumption of liquor are prohibited. Such bans are in force in several Indian states, driving a thriving black market for cheap alcohol made in unregulated backstreet distilleries that kills hundreds of people every year. In the latest incident, men in Saran district began vomiting on Tuesday before their condition deteriorated. Three died on the way to hospital and others died while being treated on Wednesday and Thursday, with local media reports putting the toll at 31. Hospital chief Sagar Dulal Sinha said 22 post-mortem examinations had been conducted so far. Senior police officer Santosh Kumar said authorities had cracked down on illicit alcohol shops in the area. “We have arrested over a dozen liquor traders and detained some others,” Kumar told AFP. Of the estimated five billion litres of alcohol drunk every year in the country, around 40 percent is illegally produced, according to the International Spirits and Wine Association of India. Illicit liquor is often spiked with methanol to increase its potency. If ingested, methanol can cause blindness, liver damage and death. In July, 42 people died in the western state of Gujarat after drinking bootleg booze. And last year, about 100 people died in the northern state of Punjab in a similar incident.
