Boko Haram nurtured by PDP, FG replies Atiku

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has blasted the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, for claiming not to understand the Boko Haram phenomenon, a situation he said was nurtured by his party. The minister who said this at a press briefing on Monday in Abuja, added that the former vice president should not feign ignorance as it was under his party’s watch the Boko Haram insurgency started in 2009. The PUNCH recalls that Atiku, during a town hall meeting recently claimed he did not understand the Boko Haram phenomenon, lamenting that despite the efforts of the Nigerian Army, the insurgency had not been eliminated. He said, “I still cannot understand why we should have Boko Haram. You see, I served in Borno State in the North-East and as a customs officer I was patrolling the entire North-East, so I am very conversant with the vegetation and with the border areas. I still cannot find a place in the Borno areas where anybody can hide and cannot be seen. I cannot understand honestly, the Boko Haram phenomenon.” But speaking at an event meant to showcase the achievement of the president Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), the minister noted that the former vice president does not need to go far to understand what happened, asking him to discuss with the hierarchy of the party why it allowed Boko Haram to operate freely, bombing cities, motor parks, schools and other soft targets. He said, “Well, the excellency does not need to go far to get answers to his questions, he should ask his party, the Peoples Democratic Party under whose watch the Boko Haram insurgency started in 2009. “For six years, until 2015, when our administration assumed office and inherited Boko Haram, the PDP more or less nurtured the insurgents into the monster they later became. Alhaji Atiku should ask his party why it allowed Boko Haram to operate freely, bombing cities, motor parks, schools and other soft targets. “Alhaji Atiku who was then residing in Abuja, before porting to his new abode in Dubai, should ask his party, the PDP, why it allowed Boko Haram to bomb the police headquarters, the UN complex, a shopping mall and motor parks in Abuja, with such ease.” The minister of information added that the presidential candidate should instead thank patriotic troops for creating a peaceful environment for economic activities to thrive in the North-East region. “His excellency will want to know that today, thanks to our patriotic troops, military objectives have been achieved in the North-East, the home region of Boko Haram thereby creating conditions for stabilisation operations to take place. “Boko Haram terrorists have been cleared from most of their strongholds, where remnants are being stuck in Lake Chad area that are difficult to access. “While on the campaign trail, and throwing political japs, we advise His Excellency Atiku Abubakar to note the popular idiom that people who live in glass houses should not throw stones,” he concluded.

Tinubu Is Buhari’s Successor, Adamu Declares

Senator Abdullahi Adamu, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has declared that the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor. He made the declaration at the North West Presidential Campaign rally of the APC in Kaduna on Tuesday. Senator Adamu said the flood of human beings that attended the rally showed the popularity of the party. “Let me introduce our next president, that’s President Buhari’s successor, to you, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. By February 25, 2023, you should all come out en masse to vote for Tinubu and all candidates of APC,” he said. He further thanked party loyalists from Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto and Kaduna for coming out in huge numbers to attend the rally. In his remarks, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna said the APC had set the standard with the large crowd as he thanked all those that came out to grace the occasion, particularly women and youths. Earlier on Monday, Tinubu vowed to end banditry and killings if elected president. He said this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Birnin Gwari, Alhaji Jibril Mai Gwari. He equally promised to construct industrial dams for the people to ease their water problem, saying he will do his best to make Nigeria a better place, even though it will be difficult. He donated N50 million to the victims of banditry in the local government area. “We will give you peace, for those who have been victims of security problem, may Allah grant those who passed Aljannatul firdausi (paradise). ” I stand before you because there is a good opportunity coming, the election is nearer; I don’t know whether bandits know that or not, but we will serve them notice again. We will not relent in our effort to eliminate banditry and killings in Nigeria. I assure you it will be our priority,” he said.

Economic crisis: IMF reaches staff-level agreement with Ghana on $3bn loan

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Ghana have reached a staff-level agreement for a three-year loan package of $3 billion. The development means that the agreement still requires the approval of the IMF management and executive board as well as receipt of the necessary financing assurances by Ghana’s partners and creditors. According to a statement issued by the IMF, Stéphane Roudet, IMF mission chief for Ghana, visited Accra from December 1 – 13, 2022, to discuss with the Ghanaian authorities on IMF support for their policy and reform plans. Ghana sought help from the IMF in July after its citizens took to the streets to protest over spiralling inflation, currency depreciation, and other economic woes. The Wasington-based institution said the economic policies and reforms to be supported by the loan would be aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability while protecting the vulnerable, preserving financial stability, and laying the foundation for strong and inclusive recovery. “I am pleased to announce that the IMF team reached staff-level agreement with the Ghanaian authorities on a three-year program supported by an arrangement under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) in the amount of SDR 2.242 billion or about US$3 billion,” Roudet was quoted as saying. “The economic program aims to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability while laying the foundation for stronger and more inclusive growth. “The staff-level agreement is subject to IMF Management and Executive Board approval and receipt of the necessary financing assurances by Ghana’s partners and creditors. “ The Ghanaian authorities have committed to a wide-ranging economic reform program, which builds on the government’s Post-COVID-19 Program for Economic Growth (PC-PEG) and tackles the deep challenges facing the country. “Key reforms aim to ensure the sustainability of public finances while protecting the vulnerable. The fiscal strategy relies on frontloaded measures to increase domestic resource mobilization and streamline expenditure. “In addition, the authorities have committed to strengthening social safety nets, including reinforcing the existing targeted cash-transfer program for vulnerable households and improving the coverage and efficiency of social spending. “Structural reforms will be introduced to underpin the fiscal strategy and ensure a durable consolidation. These include developing a medium-term plan to generate additional revenue and advancing reforms to bolster tax compliance. This will help create space for growth-enhancing measures and social spending. “Efforts will also be made to strengthen public expenditure commitment controls, improve fiscal transparency (including the reporting and monitoring of arrears), improve the management of public enterprises, and tackle structural challenges in the energy and cocoa sectors. The authorities are also committed to further bolstering governance and accountability. “To support the objective of restoring public debt sustainability, the authorities have announced a comprehensive debt restructuring. Sufficient assurances and progress on this front will be needed before the proposed Fund-supported program can be presented to the IMF Executive Board for approval. “Reducing inflation, enhancing resilience to external shocks, and improving market confidence are also important program priorities. “Accordingly, the Bank of Ghana will continue to strengthen its monetary policy framework and promote exchange rate flexibility to rebuild external buffers. “As part of the authorities’ debt strategy, a domestic debt exchange has been launched. The authorities are committed to taking the necessary mitigation measures to ensure financial sector stability is preserved.” “IMF staff held meetings with Vice President Bawumia, Finance Minister Ofori-Atta, and Bank of Ghana Governor Addison, and their teams, as well as representatives from various government agencies. “The IMF team has also continued to engage with other stakeholders. Staff would like to express their gratitude to the Ghanaian authorities, Parliament’s Finance Committee and all the private sector, trade union, and civil society representatives for their open and constructive engagement over the past few months.”

Bode George: I won’t vote for Atiku unless south-west gets PDP national chairmanship

Bode George, chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says he will not vote for Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, unless the national chairmanship is zoned to the south-west. George spoke during an interview with Arise News TV on Tuesday. The PDP chieftain has been one of the loudest voices calling for the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as the party’s national chairman. The call for Ayu’s resignation is based on the grounds that the PDP presidential candidate and national chairman cannot be from the same region — an issue that has deepened the crisis in the party. Speaking on the matter, George said PDP’s internal wrangling can be solved by giving “to Caesar what belongs to Caesar”. He added that the south-west has not held the position of national chairman since the party was founded and it must be corrected before the 2023 elections. “It is not a solution that cannot be handled. All we are saying is give what belongs to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. Give us what belongs to us. Turn by turn Nigeria limited,” he said. “Take for example, what I am angry about is, the first chairman was the late Solomon Lar from north-central. The second chairman, north-central. The third chairman, Audu Ogbe, was from north-central. The fourth chairman, Amadu Ali, from north-central; Kawu Baraje, from Kwara, was also north-central. Now you have Ayu, also north-central. “The south-west has never enjoyed this position since the party started almost 25 years ago. What is our crime? If you are telling us you want to rule this country, you have to weave all the tribes and all the people together. “That is the major problem, and unless that is resolved, I will not vote for our own candidate.”

Investors could also store their cryptocurrencies in digital wallets, similar to a bank. Bahamian authorities said Bankman-Fred was picked up on Monday at the request of the US government.   His arrest followed criminal charges filed against him by the US government. Damian Williams, US Attorney of the Southern District of New York (SDNY), confirmed in a tweet on Monday night. Williams said the arrest was based on a sealed indictment filed by the SDNY.   “We expect to move to unseal the indictment in the morning and will have more to say at that time,” Williams tweeted. The FTX founder is under investigation over allegations of wire fraud, securities fraud conspiracy and money laundering following the collapse of FTX last month. The firm filed for bankruptcy on November 11, when it ran out of money after the cryptocurrency equivalent of a bank run.

Senate Postpones Debate On CBN Withdrawal Limits

The Senate has postponed its debate on the cash withdrawal policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) till Wednesday, December 14, 2022. This is because of the absence of the Chairman of the Committee on Banking and Finance, Senator Uba Sani, who is away attending the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential rally in Kaduna. A member of the Committee, Senator Olubunmi Adetumbi, in a Point of Order told his colleagues that the report which was to be presented at Tuesday’s plenary had to be withheld because Sani is away APC rally in Kaduna. Adetumbi assured the Senate that the report of the Committee on the CBN withdrawal policy is ready, noting that the Committee’s chairman had to attend the APC Zonal rally in his capacity as governorship candidate of Kaduna State. Responding, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, appealed to lawmakers to be patient as the findings of the Committee will be unveiled within 24 hours. Uba is also expected to brief his colleagues on the outcome of the screening of Edward Adamu and Aisha Ahmad as deputy governors of the CBN. However, another lawmaker, Senator Muhammed Bulkachuwa warned that the Senate should not sweep the issue under the carpet because of the significance of the policy, noting that the House of Representatives has invited the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele to appear before the House to discuss the policy. Background The CBN on Wednesday pegged maximum daily withdrawals via Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and Point Of Sale (PoS) terminals at N20,000. The CBN said the new policy is sequel to the launch of the redesigned N200, N500 and N1,000 notes by President Muhammadu Buhari on November 23, 2022. It directed banks to ensure that weekly over-the-counter (OTC) cash withdrawals by individuals and corporate entities do not exceed N100,000 and N500,000, respectively.

INEC creating room for manipulation — Ohanaeze alleges

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has blamed INEC for any manipulations they are experiencing from politicians, saying that they left openings for such manipulations. The apex Igbo socio-cultural-cultural body said it would be unfortunate if despite all the opportunity and funds provided for INEC could not provide water-tight security for its vital materials. “They are supposed to be the regulator. They are supposed to regulate the electoral process, and the Commission that is supposed to regulate the election is now complaining. Where are we going? There should be a mechanism in place to ensure things work according. “We are supposed to complain to them but now they are the ones complaining to us. “There must be opening, that is why some of these things are happening. “If indeed there is electronic model they are trying to use, of course these things will not be happening. “There is opening for people to begin manipulating the 2023 election.Their body language is indicating that maybe they are going away to what they presented to the public. “They are part of the problems for not providing proper mechanisms to avoid all these irregularities. “That is exactly what they have been doing, what they in INEC for a very long time till now, and if with all the opportunity and money given to them, they have not been able to ensure a credible election and avoid irregularities; it is unfortunate”, Ohanaeze Ndigbo National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Alex Chidozie Ogbonnia said.
