2023: INEC commences nationwide distribution of PVCs

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Monday, commenced the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) at its local government offices nationwide. The News Agency of Nigeria reporter who monitored the collection of the PVCs in FCT, reports that the exercise commenced simultaneously at INCE, FCT headquarters and its six area council offices. NAN reports that some of the registered voters in their hundreds were seen on the queue at the gate at INEC FCT state office for the collection of their cards. NAN reports that the collection was done in wards in the FCT, depending on the mode of registration, including those who did fresh registration, transfers, requested for replacement and others. Some of the residents who spoke to NAN expressed mixed reactions to the exercise. A resident, Dare Ezekiel, after collection of his PVC commended the process for the collection, saying it went on well and smoothly. Ezekiel who said that he collected his card in less than 30 minutes, however, said there was a need to re-strategise the coordination of the crowd at the gate. “Already, the process had been simplified by arranging the collection points into wards, if the crowd can be better coordinated it would improve the process,’’ Ezekiel said. Another Resident, Ewa Ogbonna, said he arrived at the commission some minutes past 8am and collected his card before 9 am without any stress. “I did a transfer sometime in July and collected my card today. I must commend INEC. It did not take me up to 15 minutes to collect my card. “I think the problem is we, the registered voters. If we can be more organised, and respect INEC guidelines, the process will be faster,’’ Ogbonna said. However, Mr Adunbi Adebayo, another resident, who just collected his PVC, said the process of collection was cumbersome because of the volume of cards involved. Adebayo advised INEC to further simplify the process by adopting an electronic system such as database. “INEC should input every detail of the card in the database, using it to retrieve the PVCs. “The time they are using to locate an individual’s card would have been reduced if data is used for the process,’’ Adunbi said. Opara Johnson, another resident who was yet to get his card after he did the transfer of his cards, advised INEC to make the process more organised. Johnson said that the crowd was much, the process was slow and some people jumped the queue, depriving those who arrived early the opportunity to access the gate for collection. “This is demoralizing. There is no guarantee that everybody standing here today will get their PVCs. “You don’t expect me to leave my business, come here to queue and not able to collect my PVC and at the end of the day you still want me to come back tomorrow,’’ Johnson said. He advised INEC to adopt the measure of sending SMS to people with appointment on specific date and time to come for the collection of their PVCs as it was done during the voter registration exercise. A member of the Nigeria Youth Service Corps, Sofiat Ohunene, who just collected her card, also commended the exercise, saying it was orderly and well arranged for smooth collection. Ohunene said it took her more than 30 minutes to collect her cards because people were not cooperating with INEC in following the process for collection. “I just collected my PVC and the process is very fast. Though some people are complaining but I believe the process would be faster by tomorrow. “I am very happy that I am going to participate in the 2023 general elections,” Ohunene said. INEC has fixed between Dec. 12, 2022, and Jan. 22, 2023, as the dates for PVC collection in all its 774 local government offices nationwide from 9 a.m to 3p.m daily, including Saturdays and Sundays. The exercise is expected to be devolved to the 8,809 registration areas and wards from Friday, Jan. 6, to Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023. After Jan. 15, 2023, the exercise will revert to the local government offices of the commission until Jan. 22, 2023.

Ejimakor disclosed this in a tweet on his Twitter page on Monday adding that Kanu asked him to condemn the attacks. Vanguard reported that Ejimakor’s hometown in Urualla, Ideato North local government area of Imo State was invaded by armed men who set a market ablaze, destroyed properties and attacked his kinsmen on Friday. With profound sadness, he received news of the staggered attacks of past few days across Southeast, including the one at my hometown. “He asked me to strongly condemn the attacks on his behalf and convey his comfort to all the victims,” Ejimakor wrote. The recent attacks in the Southeast region cannot be unconnected with the sit-at-home exercise called for by Kanu’s self-acclaimed disciple, Simon Ekpa, to be observed from 9 – 14 December. Despite counter statements by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful and the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the boycott of commercial activities was enforced in the region.

2023: Politicians buying PVCs from voters, INEC raises alarm

THE Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has raised the alarm that some politicians have been buying up Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, and financially inducing unsuspecting voters to harvest their Voter Identification Numbers. The Acting Chairman of INEC and National Commissioner overseeing the FCT, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Plateau states, Mohammed Haruna, raised the alarm on Monday during the launch of #YourVoteMatters project by an election observer group, NESSACTION, in Abuja, where he disclosed that two people have been recently convicted for illegal possession of PVCs in Sokoto and Kano states. The project, supported by the International Foundation for Electoral System, IFES; the United States Agency for International Development, USAID; and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, FCDO, seeks to assist INEC in increasing the number of PVCs collected ahead of the 2023 general elections as well as the voters mobilised on election day. Speaking, the INEC National Commissioner also warned the electorates to desist from compromising the ownership of their PVCs; saying, “We are aware some politicians are more or less buying the PVCs. If you collect the PVC and then you sell it out or allow someone else to have it, you are aiding illegal possession of the PVC which is an offence in our Electoral Act. “Some of you are aware that only recently, INEC managed to convict two people who were found guilty of illegal possession of PVC’s in Kano and Sokoto. So, I urge people to connect their PVCs, keep it safely, and make sure that on election day, you go out there and cast youtr votes because, of course, without your PVC you cannot vote.” On her part, the Executive Director of NESSACTION, Ambassador Eniola Cole, explained that the project slated for implementation in the FCT, Nasarawa, and Plateau states, will provide logistics to incentivise communities with low PVC collection rates. While commending INEC for gains made in the electoral process through technology and other reforms, she said, “We implore the general public to take advantage of the timeframe set by INEC for PVC collection at the Commission’s LGA offices nationwide from December 12, 2022 to January 5, 2023, and at the 8809 Registration Areas from January 6, 2023 to January 22, 2023 including Saturdays and Sundays. “The public can, through dedicated channels, inform us of their location in order to receive support including the PVC collection buses and community outreach activities to be conducted at the local level in each state by our community mobilisation officers.”

2023: We will prioritize job creation, employment for youth, women – Atiku

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has promised to prioritize job creation as well as employment for youths and women as part of his recover Nigeria agenda if elected President come February. 2023. Atiku made the promise while speaking to a crowd of party supporters in Lafia, the Nassarawa State Capital, as part of his ongoing Presidential campaign. He said, “I want to use this opportunity to reiterate our commitment to making sure that our young men and women have jobs to do and have work to do when we come into office. “That is why we set aside 10 billion US dollars, so that we can pump this money in the small medium enterprises for our young men and woman. “Let me also announced that we will link up Nasarawa with all other neighboring states as far as our road infrastructure is concerned. “Having said that, I want you people to make sure that we win this state this time around.“ Speaking in a similar vein, his running mate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, expressed confidence that the PDP will win not only in Nasarawa State but across Nigeria. This, he said, was because the people identify with the party which has not only has the capacity to deliver but also has a candidate who has been tried and tested over the years. Okowa said, “We already have a date because Nassarawa State is set to win election. “The PDP has gone out well by giving us a good product, and when you have a good product it is not hard to sell that product. That product the PDP has given us today is Atiku Abubakar. “One man who is prepared, has the experience and ready to work with all Nigerians to turn things around for the good of our youths, for the good of our women and for the entire country. “We cannot miss this opportunity again, that is the best product that Nigeria has. We know we have 18 political parties there is only one man that stands out with the necessary experience to turn all Nigeria around for the good of all Nigerians.” National Chairman of the party, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, said, “I don’t want to come here and campaign because the whole of North Central where I come from, is not going to disgrace me. Every state is going to be worn by the People’s Democratic Party. Atiku Abubakar is going to get his highest vote in the north central zone. “Luckily for us, Lafia is the political capital of North central. Therefore, I epect Nasarawa state to take number one. “Nasarawa state will give Atiku Abubakar 95 percent of their votes especially now that every body that was in the other party is coming back to the PDP. “When we started their journey in 1998 was a PDP state. The current chairman of APC, Abdullahi Adamu, PDP made him. “Without PDP, there would have been no Abdullahi Adamu. So Nasarawa state is not a state for any other party. Everybody that was in another party has come back to PDP.“ In his remarks, the Chairman of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Udom Emmanuel, expressed gratitude to party stakeholders in the state for the warm reception accorded the campaign team. Emmanuel said, “ I am convinced that when it is time to announce the results, the result of Nasarawa will be announced first as PDP has won Nasarawa before any other state. “You should vote for Atiku Abubakar, you should vote for PDP. You should make PDP five over five. “Let me tell you that there is the belief now because PDP is the reigning party, that has something as a social contract with the youths. “So, we are advising you it is no longer give over five but six over six . You vote for the president, Senator, House of Representatives members, House of Assembly members, vote for the governorship and then vote for yourself, that makes it six over six. “ He further said, “It is enough that Nasarawa State would be producing raw materials and other states will establish factories elsewhere, to process your raw materials. “ I want to assure you that under the leadership of Atiku Abubakar as president what you produced in Nasarawa , people will build factory here and process it. “Nobody will come and take your Agric produce away and build factory elsewhere. You are deserving of working in a factory here. Atiku and the PDP will do that for you.”

Just wanted to kill someone’ – Man stabs female Uber driver dead

A 29-year-old man identified as Brandon Jacobs has killed a 54-year-old female Uber driver, Yolanda Dillion. Before Yolanda was killed, she was a New Orleans Police Department employee moonlighting as an Uber driver. According to report, Brandon stabbed Yolanda to death, from the backseat of her car in Louisiana, US after she picked him up for his journey on Thursday. Lopinto explained: “His confession basically stated that he woke up yesterday morning and decided he was going to kill someone and decided that was going to be his day. “We asked him specifically, how did you pick her?, his response was ‘I didn’t pick her, Uber picked her, she was the random person that picked him up that day. “He was in the back seat. Stabbed her from behind. Exited the vehicle and just walked away casually.” Yolanda, who also worked for the New Orleans Police Department as a budget administrator, was loved by her colleagues. Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said: “She will be dearly missed. She was very quiet, very humble. A quiet giant, I would say, because she meant a lot to this department and it tore our employees up.” A statement from the Jefferson Parish Sherriff’s Office added that the suspect was caught “within hours of the murder.” They said: “Our investigation has shown that the victim was an Uber driver providing a ride to Jacobs from a location in New Orleans to the hotel. “When the ride ended, Jacobs stabbed her repeatedly before leaving the vehicle.”
