Ortom meets with Tambuwal, says ‘arrogance, nonchalance’ of PDP leadership fuelled division

Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue, says the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) failed to take advantage of the crisis in the party to foster unity. He said this on Sunday while speaking with journalists after a meeting with Aminu Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto. Over the past months, five PDP governors — Ortom, Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu — and their allies have been at the forefront of calls for the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as the party’s chairman in the interest of “equity and fairness”. However, Ayu had insisted that he will not resign.   Amid the crisis, Ortom and his allies have excluded themselves from the PDP presidential campaign council. Speaking on Sunday, Ortom said though he has discussed with Tambuwal, reaching out to other aggrieved members would be meaningful. “We have discussed quite a number of issues, including the division in the PDP and the G-5, of which I am a member. He is principally here to see how we can team up and work together as a party,” he said.   “I have told him we are members of the PDP and like I have always said, the leadership of this party have failed to take advantage of the challenges of the party and make the party stronger right from when we held our national convention. “Instead of the party deploying its internal conflict resolution mechanism to look at the grievances that arose as a result of the primaries, no matter how stupid they were, they have failed to do this. Rather it is arrogance and a nonchalant attitude. “Nobody has cared to reach out to us even when we voiced out that things were not going on well. “For me, I commend him (Tambuwal) for taking this step to visit me and we have discussed my opinion on how I think this matter can be resolved and I believe that as a leader and as DG of the campaign, he will do the needful because I am not alone. “Talking to me alone will not solve the problem, but reaching out to others will be more meaningful. I also believe he will also try to do the needful to put the party together as it is.”

27 male corpses found on roadside in Zambia

Twenty-seven male corpses have been found by a roadside in Ngwerere area north of Zambia’s capital, Lusaka. According to a statement on Sunday by Danny Mwale, deputy police public relations officer, the corpses are believed to be migrants from Ethiopia. They were reportedly found on Sunday around 6pm local time, while another person, who was still alive at the time of the discovery of the corpses, has been taken in for medical treatment. “Members of the public in Lusaka’s Ngwerere area discovered suspected dead bodies around 06:00 hours,” the statement reads. “Police officers were alerted and quickly rushed to the scene where they found one gasping for life. “He was rushed to the Hospital by a concerned member of the public where he is currently receiving medical attention. “Our preliminary investigations indicate that a total number of 28 persons, all males aged between 20 and 38, were dumped in Meanwood Nkhosi along Chiminuka road in Ngwerere area by unknown people. “Out of the 28 persons, one was found gasping for life. They are all believed to be Ethiopian nationals. “All the 27 bodies have since been deposited in the University Teaching Hospitals mortuary awaiting formal identification and postmortem. “Police and other security wings have since instituted investigations into the matter.” It is not unusual to find migrants from Ethiopia, en route South Africa, in Zambia. In August 2022, 51 migrants from Ethiopia, who were on their way to South Africa, were apprehended in Zambia. They were said to have travelled for four months in “containerised trucks” and were in search of better living opportunities in South Africa.

Chimaroke Nnamani: I’m supporting Tinubu for south-east’s interest, not personal gains

Chimaroke Nnamani, a former governor of Enugu state, says he is supporting Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), because of south-east interest. Speaking at the inauguration of the state and LGA coordinators of Tinubu/Shettima Independent Campaign Council(ICC) in Enugu on Saturday, the senator said he is not supporting him for personal gains. He said the former governor of Lagos has the capacity to fix the country, adding that the Igbo must use him as a bridge to build support across the country. “I’m not looking for ministerial position because I have outgrown that. We are doing this in the overall interest of our people,” he said. “Ndigbo are using our support for Tinubu and APC in 2023 to build bridges across the country. “Don’t join issues with people who are resorting to insults. Just concentrate on the goal because this is a very serious business.” Nnamani has always been vocal about his support for the candidate of the ruling party, though he is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, the main opposition. TheCable had reported that Nnamani said of all the governors that ushered in the democratic dispensation in 1999, Tinubu made the most progress. He said Tinubu assembled the “best brains” to examine all sectors of the state when he became Lagos governor. The former Enugu governor had also been listed as a member of the APC presidential campaign council, but he was later removed — after his inclusion in the list had elicited criticism.

iPhone users to pay $3 more as Twitter relaunches subscription service

Twitter, US-based microblogging and social networking platform, says it will relaunch Twitter Blue, its monthly subscription service, on Monday. The company, in a tweet on Saturday, said users who subscribe via web will pay $8 per month, while those who subscribe on iOS will pay $11 per month to get access to subscriber-only features, including the “blue verification checkmark”. This implies that users who subscribe through the microblogging app on their iPhone and other iOS devices instead of the Twitter website, will have to pay $3 more. The higher price for iOS is reportedly to make up for the 30 percent commission Apple takes off in-app purchases.   The development comes a month after Twitter suspended its paid subscription service following a surge in impersonation of companies and celebrities on the platform. “We’re relaunching Twitter Blue on Monday – subscribe on web for $8/month or on iOS for $11/month to get access to subscriber-only features, including the blue checkmark,” the tweet reads. “When you subscribe you’ll get edit tweet, 1080p video uploads, reader mode, and a blue checkmark (after your account has been reviewed). “We’ll begin replacing that ‘official’ label with a gold checkmark for businesses, and later in the week a grey checkmark for government and multilateral accounts. “Subscribers will be able to change their handle, display name or profile photo, but if they do they’ll temporarily lose the blue checkmark until their account is reviewed again.”   Meanwhile, Elon Musk, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Twitter, disclosed that the platform would soon delete a total of 1.5 billion inactive accounts.   Musk said most of the accounts may have been deleted by the owners as there have been no tweets or login activities on them for years. “Twitter will soon start freeing the name space of 1.5 billion accounts,” Musk wrote. “These are obvious account deletions with no tweets and no log in for years.” Musk had, on November 28, 2022, accused Apple of threatening to remove Twitter from its app store, but later called it a misunderstanding after meeting with Tim Cook, Apple CEO.

How I Will Resolve IPOB Agitations – Atiku

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday, laid out his plan to tackle the agitations by separatists including the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) if elected in the 2023 elections. Atiku, who spoke at The People’s Townhall in Abuja, a live event organised by Channels Television and its partners, said the demands of pro-Biafra agitators were not beyond negotiation. “The IPOB issue in the South-East is basically, as far as my understanding is concerned, about the realisation of Biafra. Is it possible for Biafra to be realised today? How? By negotiations or by going through another civil war, which we can’t afford to? “I believe we should be able to negotiate with the agitators from the South-East, as far as the issue of Biafra is concerned. We believe what they need is more autonomy as far as their sub-region is concerned. “That is why we proposed restructuring of the country, by which we mean devolution of more powers and resources. After all, there was Eastern Nigeria in the First Republic and they developed at their own pace and with their own resources,” he said. Speaking on what he described as middle-of-the-road solutions, the former Vice President said he saw no reason restructuring and devolution of more powers and resources could not quell the various agitations of the separatist groups. “The agitations are in different perspectives, to my understanding,” he said. “One of them is political and political has the sense of ‘how does the South-East participate in power sharing in the country?’ And we are in a democratic society. “There is no one single geopolitical zone in this country that on its own can achieve political power without crossing the Niger or being in alliance with other geopolitical zones. “I think this is what they should begin to think: How do they partner with other parts of the country to secure political power for their own interests or to protect their own interests. I think these are the ways to go as far as agitations by IPOB are concerned.” In his remarks, Atiku’s running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa noted that strategic engagement was crucial, adding that the principle of inclusive governance could not be ruled out. “I know that the South-East has continued to also agitate as a result of the fact that they don’t feel included. If you watch the security architecture of the current government, they don’t appear to play any major roles. So, they see themselves as ‘excluded’ as if they are not part of this nation. “That is not the type of government that Atiku Abubakar wants to run. He’s going to run an all-inclusive government in which every segment of this country will have a feeling of being part of the government and the nation. “I think that obviously will, to a very large extent, add on to the other steps that our presidential candidate will take by the time he assumes office on May 29, 2023,” he said.

Why I deleted tweet on Deborah’s lynching in May – Atiku

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the murder of a student, Deborah Samuel, by religious extremists in a school in Sokoto, for alleged blasphemy on May 12. Atiku also explained that he deleted an earlier tweet on the matter because it didn’t get the necessary approval from him before it was sent out. The PDP candidate said he condemned the murder because it was clearly done outside the tenets of what Islam provides. He said, “I condemned it (murder). There is nowhere it is said or there is an injunction in the Islamic faith that you can go and take someone’s life. “It has to be through due process.” Miss Deborah Yakubu, a second year female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was murdered and burnt by her fellow students who were Muslims for allegedly blaspheming Prophet Mohammed, in a WhatsApp platform on May 12. On May 13, Atiku, in a post on his verified tweeter handle @Atiku, condemned the incident and called for the arrest of those behind the murder. He said in one tweet, “There cannot be a justification for such gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered, and all those behind her death must be brought to justice. “My condolences to her family and friends.” This didn’t go unnoticed by extremists, who condemned Atiku’s position and threatened to punish him at the polls. Within minutes, Atiku’s post was deleted. This led to another round of bashing from Nigerians, who felt he cared more about votes than Nigerian lives. Speaking about the lingering crisis between him and the Governor Nyesom Wike-led G-5 governors, Atiku said contrary to speculations in some quarters, he had held no less than five face-to-face meetings with Wike. He said, “I have met with Wike two times in Abuja, two times in Port Harcourt and once in London personally.” Atiku absolved himself of blame that the issues were yet to be amicably resolved, saying he was still waiting for “the other side”.

Muslim-Muslim ticket bad as retaining presidency in the north — Wike

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike has placed the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket and the retention of the presidency in the north as two wrongs that should not be allowed. In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Kelvin Ebiri, he said this on Sunday at the special dedication service for the Rivers state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 election campaign rallies. The event was held at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital. While the All Progressives Congress (APC) has produced a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the presidency, the PDP presidential candidate is Atiku Abubakar, is a northerner like the incumbent president, Muhammadu Buhari Wike said that it’s an insult to sideline the zoning of the presidency. He stressed the importance of having a fair representation in the country’s political landscape. He said, “You play on people’s intelligence. You say Nigeria is not ripe for Muslim-Muslim ticket, I agree. But Nigeria is ripe for presidency to remain in one zone? I mean, just look at the insult. You blow hot and cold,” he said. “Most of you just sit there; you don’t ask yourselves questions. Somebody continues to sell these kind of cheap ideas. You don’t ask the person, ‘I agree with what you are saying but look at what we are saying here’. “Your party wants the presidency to go to the same zone where President Muhammadu Buhari is coming from. Who is cheating who? “It is not now that politics have come, you want to come and tell the church a different story for your own personal interest. We have to be careful so that the church is not destroyed, because, all of us, for example, we are Anglicans, I will not allow anybody, for his selfish interest to destroy the church of Nigeria. I will not allow that.” Wike and four other state governors in the PDP are holding out for fairness in the running of the party, hence their insistence that the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu resigns.

Atiku’s convoy nearly crushed me to death – Tinubu’s spokesman

The spokesperson of the Presidential Campaign Council of All Progressives Congress, APC, Bayo Onanuga, has revealed how he was nearly crushed to death by a vehicle in the convoy of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP along Shehu Shagari expressway, Abuja on Sunday evening. Onanuga, who described the incident as a ‘close shave with death’ said the happening occurred as he was going back home after visiting Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi at around 9 pm on Sunday.   His words, “I was driving on the last lane of Shehu Shagari Way when I noticed a convoy emerging from one of the feeder roads. I counted in the centre lane, four vehicles ahead of me. I slowed down on my own lane to give a wide berth to the convoy. “My slowing down turned a mistake as a Toyota SUV emerged from the same road where the convoy had earlier emerged. It headed straight to my car. I was petrified as the driver rammed into my Toyota Camry, by the passenger side. The force of the collision immediately severed the side mirror from the body, severely dented and scratched the two doors on its path. I watched in horror as the driver of the SUV reversed the car and joined the cavalcade, leaving me behind to my fate. “He didn’t bother to stop to check the damage his vehicle had done to my own car, whether he had left me or anyone inside it traumatized by his recklessness. He just drove away.” “The APC Campaign Director however said he followed the convoy to its final destination in T. Y Danjuma area of Abuja where he discovered that the VIP being ferried was the PDP presidential candidate. “I had a close shave with death on Sunday night in Abuja as I was returning home at about 9p.m. after a visit to Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi. He just drove away. “Instinctively, I followed the convoy, which headed to Asokoro area of the city. “At this point, I didn’t know the VIP embedded in the convoy. Initially I thought it was a governor as the car that hit me bore a number plate that starts with RSH. My interest in following the convoy was to lodge a complaint about the murderous driver and get my car repaired. “The convoy drove deep into Asokoro, into TY Danjuma Road and then entered one of the mansions, at the entrance of which were several banners of Atiku-Okowa campaign. I drove into the compound with the convoy as I had my hazard light on like other vehicles in the convoy. My adventure was certainly getting interesting. I, an APC and Tinubu campaigner inside the PDP Atiku-Okowa den.”

Gunman shoots dead three women in Italy

Italian Carabinieri, paramilitary policemen, patrol in front of the bar where three people died in Rome. Credit: AP A man shot dead three women and wounded four other people in Rome Sunday, said police, in what may have been a dispute over housing. Italy’s far-right premier Giorgia Meloni revealed in a Facebook post later Sunday that one of the victims was a friend. The suspect shooter, 57-year-old Claudio Campi, allegedly opened fire on a meeting of his apartment building’s residents in a northern district of Rome, using a Glock pistol stolen from a shooting stand. In a post on his blog in November, he wrote of his conflictual relationship with the people managing the building, who he accused of trying to force him out of his lodgings. Of the three women who died of their wounds, one was Nicoletta Golisano, 50, mother of a 10-year-old boy, who was attending the meeting as treasurer. Meloni revealed on Facebook they were friends and paid tribute to “a protective mother, a sincere and discreet friend, who was also a strong and fragile woman”. The killer had been arrested, she said, adding she hoped that “justice will quickly follow its course”.

IPOB to American institutes: Provide evidence that we threatened 2023 elections

THE Indigenous of People Biafra, IPoB, has challenge the United States-based institutes, National Democratic Institute, NDI, and International Republican Institute, IRI, to provide evidence where it made a statement or ordered disruption of 2023 elections in Nigeria. IPoB also alleged that Nigerian government was lobbying international organizations against it, saying that all their efforts to paint the pro-Biafra group in in a bad light to international community will come to naught. They advised two the American Institutes they alleged were being sponsored by the Nigerian governmen “to make fallacious, and false statements against IPoB” towards Nigeria 2023 election to be circumspect in their reportage. They added that if the American secret agency is sincere with their intelligence, the two US-based institutes, National Democratic Institute, NDI, and International Republican Institute, IRI, should have known that Nigeria government and her security apparatus are the ones sponsoring criminals and bandits to cause confusion and havoc in the South East Region. IPoB’s statement read in part, “We the global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, under the leadership of Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to advise the two American Institutes who were sponsored to make fallacious, and false statements against IPoB, towards Nigeria compromised 2023 election to be circumspect in their reportage. “If American secret agencies are sincere with their intelligence, the two US based Institute: National Democratic Institute, NDI, and International Republican Institute, IRI, should have known that Nigeria government and her security apparatus are the ones sponsoring criminals and bandits to cause confusion and havoc in the South East Region and turn around to blame it on IPoB. “It is unfortunate that these two organisations are making caricatures of themselves in their effort to help Nigeria government blackmail IPoB. “IPoB still remains neutral towards Nigeria 2023 general elections because we know what we are looking for. “IPoB has never issued any order to disrupt election in Nigeria in 2023. “Those people using ESN and IPoB’s name to issue statements are not IPoB members and can never be our members. “They are sponsored by Nigerian politicians, Nigeria government, and her security agents to blackmail IPoB. “We challenge the United States-based Institutes to provide evidence where IPoB has made an official statement or ordered disruption of 2023 elections in Nigeria. “These two Institutes should carry out independent investigations and be properly informed about IPoB and its activities both at home and in the Diaspora, because we know that their Embassy in Abuja has already been compromised by Nigeria government to give false information against IPoB and ESN activities in the eastern region. “American Embassy in Abuja is colluding with Nigeria government and its security agents against IPoB for daring to agitate for a separate state or nation, where they can live in peace. “Nigeria government has levied secret wars against Biafrans, especially IPoB members for peacefully demanding for self determination. “Many members of IPoB have been illegally detained, victims of extra-judicial execution, many detained indefinitely and many have been forcefully removed from their families. “Will these Institutes claim ignorance of crimes and of the genocide against Biafrans who only want freedom from this oppressive country called Nigeria? “Will they claim ignorance of the illegal abduction and extraordinary rendition of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra IPoB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu? “Will these US-based Institutes claim ignorance of the disobedience of the Court and UN Working Group orders on the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, by the Nigeria government? “American Embassy should stand with the creed of their country by standing against injustice and human rights abuses. “Their foreign missions and diplomats, should stand for justice and stop allowing themselves to be compromised by Nigeria State against Biafrans.”
