Court throws out suit challenging Tinubu’s candidacy

A suit challenging the candidacy of Bola Tinubu as the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress has been dismissed by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja. A rights advocate and APC stalwart, Ngozika Ihuoma, had dragged Tinubu and the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to court on June 9 for allegedly violating extant electoral laws few days after the former Lagos State Governor won the APC presidential primary. In the suit marked FHC/ ABJ/CS/854/2022, the two presidential candidates were sued alongside their parties, Independent National Electoral Commission and the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation. Ihuoma sought for six reliefs, which included INEC barring Tinubu from contesting the 2023 presidential election. In defense of the suit, the law office of Babatunde Ogala (SAN) & Co on behalf of the APC filed a counter affidavit in opposition to the originating summons and a notice of preliminary objection. The case was however dismissed by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday. Justice Fadima Muritala described the plaintiff as a “meddlesome interloper having no locus standi to institute the suit.” He, therefore, dismissed the case for being speculative after APC’s counsel, Julius Ishola Esq, from Babatunde Ogala had urged the court to dismiss it with heavy cost for wasting judicial time. It was the fourth case to be dismissed by the court in recent times. This was further confirmed in a statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Bayo Onanuga, hours after the ruling. Onanuga disclosed that the counter affidavit challenged Ihuoma’s locus standi and grounds for the action. He said, “The counter affidavit also punctured Ihuoma’s case as academic, theoretical and an abuse of court process. The court on Monday upheld the defense counsel’s objections and struck out the case. “In the last couple of weeks, the courts have dismissed several cases brought against Asiwaju Tinubu by opposition elements, including Action Alliance, for being frivolous, lacking in merit and abuse of court processes.”

Angry Delta youths chase Elumelu away over ‘non-performance’

The Ward-to-Ward campaign train of the Peoples Democratic Party in Delta North Senatorial District on Tuesday was prevented by angry youths of Oko Community who said the politicians only make fake political promises. The youths in their numbers prevented especially the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Elumelu, from entering the community over failure to address community challenges as a lawmaker over the years. It took the effort of the senatorial candidate, Ned Nwoko, after hours to calm the nerves of unrepentant youths. The youths who reluctantly listened to Nwoko lamented the difficulties the community had faced over the years. Speaking on behalf of the group, the youth leader said the community is tired of fake promises from politicians. “Since 1999, PDP had been coming here to campaign but after elections they never remember Oko community. No road, no electricity among others social amenities. “We have been voting for this PDP in all elections but nothing to show for it. Elumelu had been coming and making fake promises. “And he is coming again to deceive us for fourth time, that’s our anger and we don’t want such promises again,” the youth leader said. The youths however, compelled Elumelu and others to go to the community shrine for an oath that they will address the community’s plight, especially the roads, if elected. Meanwhile, Nwoko assured the community that roads from Oko to Ndokwa East all the way through Isoko to Warri would be done. Nwoko also promised to address the flooding menace that had been ravaging the community on yearly basis.

UK Border Force Workers Announce Christmas Strike

One of Britain’s biggest trade unions on Wednesday warned that travellers face severe disruption after its members working in passport control at airports voted to strike over Christmas. The general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union, Mark Serwotka, said Border Force guards would walk out on eight days from December 23 to 31. Other PCS members working in other government departments, including the Highways Agency and the Department for Work and Pensions, have already announced walkouts over pay and conditions. Serwotka said workers were struggling to cope with the soaring cost of living, caused by double-digit inflation and sky-high energy prices on the back of the war in Ukraine. “The government can stop these strikes tomorrow if it puts money on the table,” he said, telling a London news conference the walkout would have “severe” effects. PCS members were “desperate” and a proposed two percent pay increase was not enough, he added, promising to escalate action in the new year unless the deadlock was broken. The strikes are part of a spiralling number, including railway workers and nurses to ambulance drivers and teachers. They will involve Border Force staff, employed by the Home Office to check passports, on December 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30 and 31. The PCS members set to take part work at Britain’s busiest airports — London Heathrow and London Gatwick — as well as Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester and Glasgow. The seaport of Newhaven, in southeast England, will also be affected. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hit out earlier Wednesday at “unreasonable” union leaders and warned of “new tough laws” to protect the lives and livelihoods of the British public. He did not elaborate but appeared to be referring to proposals first put forward in 2019 for a minimum level of service during strikes. Sunak’s spokesman later said work on the plan was taking place “at speed”. “We will consider all ways of curbing further action including legislation,” he told reporters.

Yusuf Lasun, the former deputy speaker of the house of representatives, has joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, made the announcement on Wednesday at the PDP presidential rally in Osogbo, the Osun capital. “The former deputy speaker has joined the PDP family. He used to be in PDP, but today, he has decided to come and join the PDP family,” the governor said. Lasun, who was present at the rally, hailed supporters after a terse remark. Lasun had contested the 2022 governorship election in Osun on the platform of the Labour Party (LP). Adeleke came first in the election; Gboyega Oyetola of the APC placed second; Kehinde Atanda of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) came third; while Lasun came a distant fourth. Airlines’ Trapped Funds In Nigeria Hit $550m

Despite the recent intervention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to clear part of the trapped funds belonging to foreign airlines, the funds have increased to $550m. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) revealed this Tuesday, saying the fund is about half of the $1.1bn blocked funds in Africa and the Middle East. IATA Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Mr Kamil Ala Wadhi disclosed this when he paid a courtesy visit to the House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Aviation, Rep. Nnolim Nnaji. A statement from Nnaji’s office quoted him as appealing to IATA to prevail on its member airlines to show understanding as the various organs of government were making efforts to ensure that their ticket proceeds were duly remitted. Daily Trust reports that the CBN about three months ago intervened by releasing half of the trapped fund at a time it was about $450m. However, most of the airlines claimed they did not get the part payment and as a result, Emirates Airlines suspended flights to Nigeria while other airlines are threatening to follow suit. The committee chairman reminded his guests that the prevailing situation was in consonance with the global economic meltdown assuring him that the federal government through the CBN had put in place a mechanism for the liquidation of the blocked funds.

Why We Arrested D’Banj – ICPC

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed the arrest of Mr. Oladipo Daniel Oyebanjo, otherwise known as D’Banj. Daily Trust had reported how the singer was grilled by the commission and detained over night. In a statement, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, Spokesperson of ICPC, said D’Banj was being investigated for fraud associated with the N-Power Programme. The N-Power is a scheme established by President Muhammadu Buhari on 8th June, 2016, to address the issues of youth unemployment and empowerment, and help increase social development. “In line with its mandate, the Commission had received numerous petitions on the diversion of N-Power funds running into billions of naira following the approval and release of such funds to the beneficiaries by the Federal Government. Many N-Power beneficiaries had complained over the non-receipt of the monthly funds in spite of payment by the Government.” “About 10 persons have been invited by the ICPC over the last few months in connection with the N-Power fraud, and have been granted administrative bail after their detention. Several invitations to Mr. Oladipo Daniel Oyebanjo, to appear before a team of investigators were ignored and not honoured. “Mr. Oyebanjo turned in himself and was taken into custody at the ICPC Headquarters on Tuesday, 6th December, 2022, and is currently assisting the investigators to unravel the circumstances of the fraud allegations by the petitioners. “The investigation will be all-encompassing and also be extended to other collaborators of the fraud and the banks where the beneficiaries’ accounts are domiciled.”

Power outage as truck hits TCN transformer in Abuja

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said the current restricted power situation in parts of Abuja was as a result of truck loaded with gravel that lost control and crashed into the company’s 132 Kilo Volt (KV) transmission tower No 20, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, TCN’S General Manager, Public Affairs made this known in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday. Mbah said that the incident occurred at about 2.55pm Tuesday and brought down the tower. She said that the tower supply’s bulk electricity to the 100 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA) part of the Katampe Substation and 2x60MVA Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Central Area Substation. ”Consequent upon the incident, there is restricted power outage in Maitama, Wuse, Central Area, and some parts of Garki,” she said.   According to her, the company is working assiduously to put in place a bypass from the Katampe Substation to the GIS substation in the Central Area to restore power supply to the area and environs ”Attempts are being made by TCN engineers to remove the conductors presently lying on the road to ensure ease of movement around the area. ”Presently, TCN’S engineers are at the site of the incident and are already assessing the level of damage and attempting to put in place remedial installation in the form of a temporary by-pass to restore electricity supply to the affected areas, ”she said.       Mbah also said that after the restoration of power to the tower, TCN would commence the dismantling and reconstruction of a new transmission tower to replace the damaged one. ‘TCN assures that its engineering lines crew are making every effort to restore power supply and notes that supply will be restored as soon as possible, ”she said. Obi has nothing to offer Nigerians – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) says Peter Obi, Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate has nothing to offer Nigerians going by his released policy document. Mr Bayo Onanuga, the Director, Media and Publicity, APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, saying that the document was empty and vacuous.   “We are glad that Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi finally released their much awaited policy document after many contradictory statements on same. “After perusing the document which is very high on graphics and demagogic rhetorics and short on substance, we have come to the conclusion that the document is empty and vacuous. “The document which is titled: ‘It is Possible: Our Pact with Nigerians’ offers nothing refreshing to Nigerians and comes across as total anti-climax. “The subtitle ‘Action Plan’ was shamelessly parroted from Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s manifesto,” Onanuga said. He said many of Obi’s gullible followers must have been utterly disappointed that their man failed to offer them anything to be proud of. This, he said, was after all the blusters and the initial leakage of the document which contained strangely, 15 pages of the biographical sketches of Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed. Onanuga said Obi’s document contained no grand policy initiatives and options to excite right thinking Nigerians, adding that the document was silent about how he wanted to achieve his objectives. “Instead, it will set alarm bells ringing in the South South and North East as Obi promises to ‘engineer the transition of Nigeria from a fossil fuel dependency to climate and eco-friendly energy use. “As expected, Obi’s document contains fallacies and false statistics. “He claimed China moved 740 million people out of poverty. He understated the achievement and was silent about the period it took the Chinese Communist party to achieve this. “China moved close to 800 million people out of poverty and it was achieved in 40 years. “This makes the present APC government’s plan to move 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years, more realistic than Obi’s rhetoric tends to suggest,” Onanuga said. He said that one of the fallacies contained in the document which Obi had often repeated to his followers was that Nigeria was a failed state. “I wonder whether the labour party presidential candidate sometimes bothers to check the meaning of a failed state and whether the country he dreams to govern falls into the mold of Yemen or Somalia where institutions of government have lost total control of their societies,” Onanuga said. He said another fallacy was Obi’s claim was that Nigeria recorded modest gains from 1999 to2015 in during Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) years, even when all verifiable evidence pointed to the contrary. “The Labour Party presidential candidate simplistically diagnosed Nigeria’s problem as elite capture, which is self-indicting as he and his running mate, who he styled new breed are members. “He claims incompetent leadership has divided the nation, playing up religious and ethnic sentiments, another self-indictment,” Onanuga said. This, he said, was especially because the hallmark of his campaign had been to go from one church to the other, positioning himself as a Christian candidate and inciting the church against the current APC government. “In fact, the document Obi released is a poor imitation and regurgitation of what the current APC-led administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is doing. “If anything, the document shows him as a man without honour, credibility and character because he is promising to do all the things he has railed against and de-legitimised in the past. “We make bold to state that Obi lacks the mental acuity and rigour for the job he is asking Nigerians to entrust to him. “He is surely not ready and prepared to be the president this great country deserves, and if indeed the Labour Party candidate paid for the wishy-washy document, he should ask for a refund. “Nigerians are warned to steer clear of Obi and his party, his whole presidential ambition is full of sound and fury, signifying nothing,” he said.(NAN)

IMO2023: PETER OBI’S CAMPAIGN STOP AND UZODIMMA’S MAGNANIMITY IN OPPOSITION

Ugochimereze Chinedu Asuzu Some of my followers and friends on Facebook came to my inbox to inquire my take on the visit of Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party to Imo State, and the ‘warm welcome’ accorded him at the airport by the governor of the state who is of another political party, and I just have this few lines of thought on the subject matter. While not really in the mood to comment on the issue, because it didn’t occur to me as a topic of great interest, not about the campaign of Mr Peter Obi of the labour party, which is normal, nor is it the welcome accorded him by the host governor of the state, which is what ought to be. Nevertheless, dragging it further, Peter Obi is an ex governor of his home state who should still enjoy some measure of goodwill from incumbent governors who will themselves leave office someday and become ex governors like Peter and a host of other past governors are now. Governorship seats of every state in Nigeria same as the presidential seat are constitutionally tenured, such that everyone occupying same today would someday seize to occupy same and relinquish same to another occupant that will be thrown up by the will of the people at elections (if I’m not mistaken). Now, Peter visited Imo for the purpose of interfacing with his party faithful and by extension sale his candidacy to non-party members of his political party resident in Imo state as is customary during campaign period, for that singular purpose he came, and the incumbent governor of the state who is of the ruling APC both at state and federal level welcomed him at the airport, and went ahead to approve the state owned mini stadia for the rally; though we learnt the approval came a bit late, as the labour party leadership in the state had contracted another private space for the hosting. While it’s commendable the gesture of Governor Hope Uzodimma to make welcome the labour party presidential candidate to Imo state, it’s likewise trite to posit that it’s not really a big deal when viewed from the angle of what ought to be the norms as against what is obtainable in the now, as we expect that he extends such largesse to all the presidential candidates visiting the state for campaigns without exception. In doing this, Governor Hope Uzodimma is gradually proving critics wrong of the label of high-handedness and rigidity against the opposition in the state, and imbibing a democratic stand in handling government business. That there are those who believe or feels he’s faking it or pretentious about it, it’s neither here nor there because the deed has been done and the positive projection earned for keep, we can’t but define the position of one’s mind through his facial constructions, because as humans there’s a limit to the scope of our visuality, hence we can’t play God while trying to play opposition. If it’s pretentious the deed of governor Hope Uzodimma in welcoming a presidential candidate of an opposition party to the state, then he sure has native intelligence that enables him know when and how to strike a balance between opposition and governance, because as the host governor and chief security officer of his state, the security and general well-being of his visitors, more so high profile visitors as presidential candidates is part of his priority as the host governor. On overall, the resort to politics of bitterness, rancour and vindictiveness is not the best, and opposition shouldn’t mean intolerance, where anyone gets it right it should be commended and when they get it wrong it should likewise be criticized in that order. I believe that’s what is called constructive criticism, we shouldn’t be utterly or blindly subjective in criticism. Governor Uzodimma did well by welcoming Mr Peter Obi of the labour party to Imo state, and should be commended and not vilified. Shalom! ©UCA

German police arrest 25 on suspicion of plotting coup

The police in Germany have arrested 25 individuals across the country over an alleged plot to overthrow the government. The suspects were alleged to be members of the Reichsbürger (Citizens of the Reich) movement. The Reichsbürger is a far-right movement that does not believe in the legitimacy of the modern German state. According to the BBC, reports from Germany suggest that the far-right group was planning to attack the Reichstag, the parliament building, and seize power. Heinrich X111, a 71-year-old man, is alleged to have been at the heart of the movement’s alleged plot to overthrow the government. Marco Buschmann, Germany’s justice minister, posted on Twitter saying the federal prosecutor-general is investigating a suspected terrorist network with ties to the Reichsbürger movement. Buschmann said there is suspicion that the movement is planning an armed attack on constitutional bodies. “Democracy is well defended: Since this morning, a major anti-terror operation has been taking place,” the minister said. “The Federal Public Prosecutor is investigating a suspected terrorist network from the Reich citizen milieu. There is a suspicion that an armed attack on constitutional bodies was planned.”
