ASUU Strike: FG To Review University Autonomy Laws, Says Osinbajo

In the light of recent agitations by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has said the Federal Government is planning to review the university autonomy laws. This comes weeks after ASUU called off an eight-month strike, which saw its members demanding improved welfare, revitalisation of public universities, and academic autonomy, among others. Osinbajo was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha at an event organised by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Abuja to mark the 60th anniversary of the NUC and launch of the Core Curriculum Minimum Academics Standards (CIMAS). The vice president stated that one of the major issues bedevilling university education in Nigeria was the incessant strike actions by various unions in public universities. “The most recent strike actions by the university-based unions have necessitated a revisit on the issues and scope of university autonomy by government,” he said. “This will lead to a review of the university autonomy laws to appropriately address funding, including staff remuneration, institutional governance, and administration, as well as issues relating to internally generated revenue.” According to him, the university system has cumulatively lost over 50 months from 1999 to date as a result of strike actions by ASUU. “I doubt if there is any country that has lost such amount of time to strikes in its university system. “From the first strike in 1978 to date, all the issues have remained the same. The agitations have been primarily on funding, university autonomy, and remunerations. “I need to stress here that government alone cannot fund education in the country. It is therefore imperative that a sustainable model of funding university education must be developed,” he said. Osinbajo applauded what it described as the foresight of the NUC in unbundling such disciplines as Agriculture, as well as the emergence of three new disciplines, namely Allied Health Sciences, Architecture and Communication, and Media Studies. The launch of CIMAS, he said, would usher in a new era in the delivery of quality and relevant content. For the greater part of 2022, the country’s public universities have been crippled by industrial action over the demands of their academic workers, including the non-payment of university revitalisation funds amounting to about N1.1 trillion. Following a court ruling in October, ASUU called off its strike. However, its relationship with the Federal Government has remained contentious. At the end of October, the academics received part payment from the Federal Government, prompting a one-day nationwide protest in November. However, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila said the ‘no work, no pay’ policy embarked on by the Federal Government during the period of strike is premised on the law. He added that the decision is based on the government’s legitimate interest in preventing moral hazard and discouraging disruptive industrial actions. The Federal Government also defended the pro-rata payment, saying the workers could not be paid for work not done. According to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, the lecturers were paid what is due to them. Similarly, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, through the spokesman for the ministry, Olajide Oshundun, dismissed media reports that the government was biased in paying the university teachers. But the National President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke blamed Ngige for allegedly authorising the part payment, describing him as an “interloper.” He further expressed confidence in the Federal Government to resolve ASUU’s agitations.

‘Can’t You Say Something And Stand By That?’ Wike Knocks Dogara For Backing Atiku

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has knocked a former Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara for backing Atiku Abubakar’s presidential bid. Dogara and some aggrieved members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) recently endorsed the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for next year’s election, a move Wike says is a deviation from the former speaker’s earlier stance. Wike who spoke during the flag-off of Indorama- Agbonchia- Ogale- Ebubu East/West Link Road, claimed that Dogara had insisted on Nigeria’s presidential seat returning to southern Nigeria as against his most recent support for Atiku from the northern region. “What I don’t like in life is people that don’t have character. I can’t stand it. At the appropriate time, I would challenge them to a debate. Ask Dogara: what made you leave PDP?” the governor asked during the event held on Monday. “Dogara was to see me; unknown to me, he gave me an excuse and I was watching Dogara on TV being received by President Muhammadu Buhari that he has gone to APC. I say ‘Okay, no problem’. The same Dogara said the presidency should be zoned to southern Nigeria for there to be peace. Now, I hear about the same Dogara (backing Atiku from the north). Is that how you do things? Can’t you say something and stand by it?” Wike’s comment is the latest in the crisis rocking the main opposition PDP since the party’s presidential primary earlier in May. The governor, who lost to Atiku in the exercise, claims the process was unfair and is also insisting that the National Chairman of the PDP Iyorchia resigns his position as part of moves to reach a truce. While efforts are being made to resolve the crisis, the governor and his allies have pulled out of the party’s presidential campaign with Wike saying the group will make a decision soon.

Bode George, Makinde, Fayose Shun Atiku’s Lagos Rally

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, was conspicuously absent as the party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, took their presidential campaign rally to Lagos. George is a strong member of the PDP Integrity Group which also has five governors of the party known as G5 as members. The group led by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is demanding the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu as a condition to work for Atiku. Among the G5 governors is Seyi Makinde of Oyo State who also shunned the rally in Lagos, South West.   Similarly, the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, former Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, among other leaders of the Integrity Group, were absent. However, Atiku and his entourage rode triumphantly into the Tafawa Balewa Square, venue of the rally, in a motorcade. At the rally were Governors Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom; Godwin Obaseki of Edo; Darius Ishaku of Taraba. Others in attendance were former Senate Presidents: Dr. Bukola Saraki, Dr. Anyim Pius Anyim; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, among others. The PDP governornorship candidate in Lagos, Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran popularly known as Jandor, who welcomed the presidential campaign train said his candidature would end the reign of the All Progressives Congress in the state. He said, “Funke and I have been ordained by God to put an end to this dynasty that has held us by the jugular.”

Fear must not lead our youths to ‘japa’ – Osinbajo

Vice president Yemi Osinbajo, has urged the Nigerians youths to be hopeful, and not be pressured to leave the country out fear of the unknown. Osinbajo made this appeal during the 2022 Service of Nine Lessons and Carols held on Sunday evening at the National Christian Centre in Abuja. He said, “Fear of the unknown should not be allowed to lead our young people to migrate to other countries in search of greener pastures. We can make our pastures here greener again. It requires commitment and consistency. Osinbajo, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, urged Nigerians not to exercise fear or despair over the current challenges facing the country ahead of the 2023 elections. He expressed hope that Nigeria would overcome the difficulties as the elections and population census would be conducted peacefully without rancour. Osinbajo urged Nigerians to change the lens through which they view the country’s current predicaments and to always have positive expectations. He said, “Your theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Fear Not’. This is a very important subject for everyone of us even as we approach 2023 which has been described as a year that Nigeria seems to be at a crossroad. “We are approaching the year 2023. Yes, we are going to have elections and we are going to have a census exercise. “All these issues come with a lot of questions, but we have an assurance from our Lord and Saviour. He will not let our hearts be troubled. We should believe in Him and believe in God,” he added.

2023: Why I Prayed Naked For Tinubu’s Victory At The Beach — Actor Olaiya Igwe

Veteran Nollywood actor, Ebun Oloyede, fondly known as Olaiya Igwe has broken his silence regarding his viral naked video which has stirred controversies, especially in the Nigerian social media space. It could be recalled that Olaiya was spotted in a video, naked and praying for the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress(APC) Bola Ahmed Tinubu to win the upcoming election. The filmmakers had stirred a lot of controversies over his action as various Nigerians had condemned his act stating that it was uncalled for, shameful, and inappropriate. Amid the controversies, the actor appeared on the popular TVC television programme, “Your View” where he spoke about the reason why he went naked at the beach. According to Olaiya the reason behind his action was a spiritual calling, he also added that it was a voice which had told him to pray for Tinubu at the beach. The actor said, “I was asked to stand up and do it spiritually. I have a gift of revelation from almighty God. At times, I see what God planned for me ahead before it happens. I was sleeping that day and the voice came to me and said, please stand up, you said you love Asiwaju and he has been assisting you. I said yes. Stand up, go and do this for him.” He further mentioned that he owes no one an apology. “It was an intentional action because I listened to the voice that asked me to do so and I have no regret. I can do anything to support Asiwaju as long as I believe this thing has nothing to do with any other person, I can do it to any length,” he said. Olaiya further debunked several claims of him being paid to do what he did. “I deliberately recorded that event for people to see. It is not because of money,” the veteran actor cleared the air. Olaiya Igwe is among several other Nollywood actors who have decided to open up their support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu among others include; Fausat Balogun, Yinka Quadri, Jide Kosoko, Taiwo Hassan, Faithia Williams, Femi Adebayo, Shola Kosoko, and Saheed Balogun.

Gunmen abduct Benue commissioner

Ekpe Ogbu, Benue state commissioner for housing and urban development, has been abducted by gunmen. The commissioner was kidnapped on Sunday evening along the Otukpo-Ado road, Ado LGA of the state. Three other persons were said to be in the commissioner’s car, but it is unconfirmed if they were also kidnapped. Anene Sewuese, police public relations officer in Benue, confirmed the development to TheCable on Monday morning. ‘Peter Obi Cruising To Victory’: LP Dismisses Internal Wranglings

The Labour Party (LP) believes its presidential candidate Peter Obi will clinch the country’s number one seat in next year’s election despite the crisis in the party. The Ogun State chapter of the party suspended the Director-General of its presidential campaign Doyin Okupe, a move which was overruled by the national body of the LP. But speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, a member of the Labour Party legal team Joe-Oke Onuakalusi says with the former Anambra State governor, his party is sure to win. When asked if the party is strong enough to handle internal disputes, he said: “It is [strong enough]. When the head is correct, the body will be equally correct. “You can understand that in Kenya, Ruto came on board just like Peter Obi is emerging and he won and is going to do excellently well,” he said on the show. “So, we are bent on winning the 2023 election, and by the time Peter emerges come February 2023, we are putting Nigeria on the right track. We have the structure and the best hands and Peter is cruising to victory.” He noted that the suspensions in the party are basically an internal affair which is not peculiar to the Labour Party. “Every party has its own constitution and internal affairs. If any party member goes contrary to it, they have the right to a disciplinary procedure and if that one takes place, it becomes a party affair,” he added. The lawyer faulted Okupe’s suspension, saying only the presidential candidate of the party has the right to appoint his campaign organisation’s director general. “He (director general, in this case, Okupe) must not be a member of the party; being a member of the party is an addendum but it is the prerogative of the presidential candidate (Obi to appoint his DG),” Onuakalusi noted. According to him, only the ward leaders have the power to suspend a member and not the state leadership as done by the Ogun State chapter of the party. “So, it is laughable for a group of men to say, ‘We have expelled you from the party’,” the Labour Party chieftain maintained.
