2023: How Peter Obi Will Split PDP, APC’s Votes- Prof. Odinkalu

Human rights lawyer and former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Professor Chidi Odinkalu has said Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate will cause damage to both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the February 25 poll. Prof Odinkalu in a recent interview with Nigerian Tribune said the Labour Party standard flag-bearer is a factor in the election, adding that this year’s election will be slightly different and unique.   “Peter Obi, of course, does damage. But Obi is an equal opportunity damage. “Obi is going to cost PDP votes in the South-East, but he is also a factor in Lagos and nobody is claiming that PDP is likely to win Lagos because it is Tinubu’s home state and Tinubu is likely to win Lagos. “But Peter Obi is a factor in Lagos, but if Tinubu chooses to manage Obi through voter suppression, Tinubu will lose votes and if he chooses to also manage Obi head-to-head, Tinubu will still lose votes. “So, Obi does not just damage PDP’s natural constituency, he also eats into APC’s too. That is just what it is in this election.”

2023 Presidency: Pastor Bakare Rejects Tinubu

Pastor Tunde Bakare, Presiding Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church (formerly Latter Rain Assembly), has said good politicians do not ask others to answer questions directed at them. Bakare said this in his state-of-the-nation address, on Sunday.   Though, the fiery cleric did not mention the name of Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he gave several instances that showed he was referring to the ruling party’s candidate. During his presentation at Chatham House, London, in 2022, some members of the audience asked Tinubu some questions bordering on insecurity, oil theft, education and economy and how he planned to address crises in those areas if he became president. As he was asked by the moderator to respond to the questions, Tinubu said he would assign some members of his entourage to do so. The former Lagos State governor assigned governor El-Rufai of Kaduna State to speak on how his government would address insecurity and asked the Director of Strategic Communication of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Dele Aleke, to respond to the question on oil theft, while he delegated a former Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State, Wale Edun, to respond to a question on how he (Tinubu) would boost the economy if elected. This had created a storm as critics said the action showed he was unfit to govern, but Tinubu’s supporters defended him saying what he did show he was ready to run an inclusive government if elected. In his address, Bakare also warned against politics of entitlement, describing it as bad politics. The preacher also made reference to the Yoruba word, ‘Emi lokan”, meaning it is my turn. Emi lokan became a popular term after Tinubu used it to canvass votes in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, in the buildup to the APC Presidential primary, which Bakare contested but lost. The cleric said politicians with a sense of entitlement evade political debate and fail to address Nigerians they seek to serve. He also asked Nigerians to reject vote buyers in the 2023 election and called for entrenchment of good politics which focuses on issues of development. “This ’emi lo kan’ politics that insists on one’s turn, even if circumstances do not align, is bad. Politics of entitlement also manifests as perennial candidacy, not with the intent to serve, but to gratify long personal ambitions. It could also manifest as insistence on a given political office as a reward for what one considers a lifetime of sacrifice to the nation. Politicians with a sense of entitlement evade political debates and do not consider it imperative to communicate with the electorate.” “Entitlement politics will breed an imperial presidency that is distant from the people and has no sense of responsibility or accountability to the people. Such imperial governance will slide towards dictatorship and will be intolerant of dissent. “Entitlement politicians set low performance benchmarks for themselves when they secure power and are content with projecting molehills as mountains of achievement. Good Politics, Good Governance, Fellow Nigerians, having completed our analysis of bad politics and the bad governance it outputs, let us now take a look at good politics and its output of good governance. Good politics is pragmatic politics in the interest of the people. “Politicians who practice good politics talk to the people they intend to govern; by communicating, they allay fears, restore hope, and assure the citizens. It is engaging and interactive. The practitioners of good politics are open to interrogation and they do not avoid debates or evade difficult questions. It is inclusive : good politics gives a sense of belonging to historically excluded or vulnerable groups, including women, young people, the elderly, and persons living with disabilities,” he said.

The PPRO said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Bartholomew Onyeka, had deployed a tactical team toward ensuring that the perpetrators were arrested and brought to book.

Dankwara disclosed this on Sunday in a statement in Benin. Anambra Govt Clampdown On Peter Obi’s Campaign, Pulls Down Bill Boards

Barely two months after Anambra State Governor Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo criticised Mr. Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for worthless savings, the State Government has expanded the battle front further by pulling down the campaign billboards of Obi and the Senatorial candidate of the party for Anambra Central District, Chief Victor Umeh, mounted at strategic places in the state. The Labour Party accused Soludo of giving the order for the action to be taken. A chieftain of the party who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Obi and Umeh’s large billboard at the UNIZIK Temporary Site Flyover was pulled down on Saturday by the Anambra Signage and Advertising Agency( ANSAA). He alleged that the billboard at UNIZIK Temporary Site Junction was removed on the orders of Soludo. He argued that “The advert which was placed by an APCON registered Advertising Agency was fully paid for. “Soludo said that he does not want Labour Party advert on such a strategic place and ordered the Anambra Signage Agency to refund the money it received for the advert. “He also ordered the removal of the Labour Party advert at the Afor Nnobi Gantry. This Advert has been there since October, 2022 and was paid for five months. However, the Managing Director of Anambra Signage and Advertising Agency( ANSAA), Mr Tony Ujubuonu, confirmed that the LP billboard was removed on Saturday but not on the orders of the state governor.   He said: “Whatever that was removed was as a result of a challenge we had with the agent that erected the board. First and foremost is that the bridge you are talking about was having a Labour Party billboard. If you recall, in August, we sent out a message to all political parties to pay up their campaign fees. “There was a lot of hullabaloo about it. None of them has paid their own. So most of the parties that have not paid theirs that have adverts on government assets were removed. It has nothing to do with the governor. Governor didn’t give any order. If they said they paid the campaign fees, let them give me any evidence, I should know, I am the the ANSAA MD. “They didn’t pay the campaign fees and we spoke to their media heads several times; we informed them about the enforcement, and they haven’t paid it so we decided to take down the advert. It has nothing to do with the governor. Anybody that tells you anything about the governor and the billboard is telling you lies. According to Ujubuonu when the advert was removed, government refunded the advertising agency that mounted the advert its money. He added: “The money was refunded to the agency which owned the board not to the client. We don’t deal directly with the Labour Party, we deal with the advertising agency that mounted the board. The money was refunded to the agency because they must have incurred some debts on that particular period”, he concluded.

‘Trafficking’: Police intercept three men with 41 children in Kwara

Police operatives have arrested three men found with 41 children along the Okolowo expressway in Kwara state. According to a statement by Ajayi Okasanmi, spokesperson of the Kwara police command, the suspects and the children were intercepted around 4am on Saturday. The police said efforts are ongoing to reach the parents of the children, while operatives are also investigating the claim by the suspects that the children were on their way to be enrolled in a school in Kwara. “On January 14, 2023, at 0400 hours along the Okolowo Expressway, a detachment of policemen on special security assignment intercepted the trio of Musa Ayuba, 44, Jeremiah Muda, 35, and Luka Ayuba, 37, all of Bangi village via Kontagora, Niger State, with 41 young boys and girls (22 boys and 19 girls) with their age ranges between five and 15 years, while waiting for a lorry that was to convey them to their destination in Ilorin,” the statement reads. “The suspects, while undergoing interrogation, claimed to be coming from Niger State to Ilorin to meet a certain pastor to enroll the children in a yet-to-be-determined school. “The claim that looked spurious would be discreetly investigated, as it is highly suspected to be a case of child trafficking. “The children are presently in the custody of the police command, with efforts to contact the state ministry of women’s affairs. “Investigation and contact with the children’s parents and guardians are ongoing.”

PDP crisis: Resignation of ABC Nwosu vindicates G5 governors, says Wike

Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, says the resignation of A.B.C. Nwosu from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vindicated the stance of the G5 governors. Nwosu, a member of the PDP board of trustees (BoT) and an ally of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the party, recently resigned his membership of the party. In a letter addressed to Iyorchia Ayu, national chairman of the PDP, and Adolphus Wabara, acting chairman of the party’s BoT, Nwosu said he was leaving the PDP over the party’s failure to respect the zoning arrangement in its constitution. Speaking on Saturday when stakeholders of Ogu/Bolo LGA visited him at the government house in Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital, Wike said the development lends credence to the position of the G5 governors on the demand for equity, fairness, and justice. “I have continued to challenge them. What is the problem? What are we fighting for? What I said and will continue to say is that all of us are from this country. Nobody is a second-class citizen,” Wike said. “We are agreed that this is how our party will be. Recently Prof. A.B.C. Nwosu resigned from the party, saying that his conscience will not allow him, that the constitution of the party is clear — ‘if you take this, these other people will take that’. Why now are we saying that we won’t do it again? “What the people are saying is ‘look, you have taken this; let these people take that’, and you are saying you will take all. If you take all, you will also face the repercussions.” The Rivers governor also said nobody can intimidate the state. “You cannot fight anybody that God has blessed. God has blessed Rivers state. Anybody fighting Rivers state, you are fighting yourself,” he added. “Nobody can intimidate us. No one state in this country can intimidate Rivers state. If you want to fight us, we will fight you to the last. “If you want to make peace with us, we will make peace with you to the last. But thinking that anybody will come and intimidate us and then we will chicken out, that is not possible.”

Jonathan to politicians: Don’t blackmail judiciary when you get power

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has asked politicians to allow the judiciary to perform its constitutional functions without undue interference. Jonathan spoke on Saturday during the book presentation and reception marking the retirement of Kate Abiri as the chief judge of Bayelsa. The former president urged politicians not to be blinded by the political power which they wield. Jonathan also advised judicial officers to uphold the virtues of impartiality and courage in upholding the rule of law, adding that such virtues are significant in the delivery of justice. The former president acknowledged the role played by Abiri in the swearing in of Nyesom Wike as governor of Rivers in 2015, following a leadership crisis in Rivers state judiciary. “I advise politicians that while in office, let us not try to blackmail the judiciary because it is conservative,” Jonathan said. “When we get political power, we get so blinded. Politicians should know that society is changing. “Today, we are celebrating our retiring chief judge because she has served meritoriously. “In 2015, she left Bayelsa for Rivers to perform the swearing-in of the governor, thereby averting anarchy. “It appears that the judicial arm is more functional than the executive.” On his part, Douye Diri, governor of Bayelsa, commended Abiri for her outstanding achievements during her 15-year term as chief judge of the state. Diri described Abiri as a legal icon who rendered meritorious service in her three decades of legal practice. He said the state would still require her services and wealth of experience.

IPoB: Bid to force US to intervene in Nnamdi Kanu’s case gets boost

The call by a US congressman, Jarvis Johnson of the State of Texas, seeking the American government’s intervention in the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has received the backing of eminent Igbo personalities. Johnson, who made the demand in a statement dated January 9, 2023, said it would be wrong for the US, which had defended democracy in different parts of the world, to stay aloof and watch the Nigerian government fragrantly violate both its rules and international laws. He accused Nigeria of carrying out genocide against her citizens. The US lawmaker maintained that “Kanu committed no crime by asking for a referendum for the self-determination of his oppressed Biafrans”. He strongly condemned Kanu’s abduction and extraordinary rendition from Kenya, saying that the time has come for the US to call the Nigerian government to order. The statement read in part:” Mazi Kanu’s only offence is that he is the leading advocate for the freedom of all oppressed Nigerians, and for a referendum on the Biafran issue. The right to free speech including political advocacy is a cornerstone of all democracies. “At a time when democracy is threatened globally, it is imperative that we all join hands to protect Mazi Kanu’s right to freedom of speech. “The illegal kidnapping, torture, and solitary confinement of Mazi Kanu offends our democratic norms. So does the willful disobedience of the judgments of its own courts by the Nigerian government. “I am demanding the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The Government of Nigeria needs to comply with the UN Mandate and the Orders of its own Courts. “The Nigerian government is carrying out another form of genocide, one citizen at a time. I am calling on the American Government to get involved to stop this genocide. “We have protected other countries around this world to help vulnerable populations; we need to do the same for Nigeria and its Biafran citizens.” ‘Long overdue’ Speaking with Sunday Vanguard on the matter, National President, of Abia State Elders Consultative Forum, Professor Princewill Ariwodor, described the call as long overdue. He said that it was signified that the international community was aware of the plights of the IPOB leader, and the persecution of the Ndigbo in Nigeria. His words: “The call is timely. I’m glad that the international community sees the ordeals of the Igbo man in Nigeria.” Ariwodor expressed disappointment that despite repeated appeals by Igbo leaders, President Muhammadu Buhari has failed to release Kanu. “The late President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ambassador George Obiozor, before his death, had an audience with President Muhammadu Buhari and begged him to release Nnamdi Kanu. Despite the promises, Kanu is still detained”, the Abia Elders leader said. “Igbo elders have done everything to show Buhari our protest in a gentle way. We had thought that by taking a more civilized approach, Buhari would take the path of honour. But instead, he chose to listen to his brothers who are not interested in the unity of this country.” Ariwodor said that the continued detention of Kanu against court judgments amounted to the humiliation of the entire Igbo race. The Abia Elders expressed optimism that the call by the US congressman would be heeded by the US government. ‘Heed growing calls’ On its part, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Abia State Chapter hailed the move by the US congressman and urged Buhari to heed the growing calls for Kanu’s release. CAN Chairman, Abia State, Apostle Emmanuel Agonmuo, said the opinion of the US lawmaker was an indication that the world was monitoring developments about Kanu’s continued detention. He urged Buhari to show he is the father of all by giving a political solution to Kanu’s matter as being clamoured by many. The cleric noted that early resolution of Kanu’s matter would help restore peace to South-East for the good of all. He commended the US congressman for speaking up while urging the US government to also take a position on the matter. Motion Also speaking, a former presidential aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Dr Cosmos Ndukwe, commended the US congressman for the bold move but urged him to go beyond mere press statement and raise it as a motion in the American House of Representatives. The former Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly said it would carry more weight if the move had come as a motion to the House. Commenting on the matter, the Chairman Board of Trustees, BoT, Igbo Think Tank, Professor Madubuike Ezeibe, urged the Nigeria government to obey various court judgments concerning Kanu. He said it was a violation of the rule of law for the government to still hold Kanu against court pronouncements as doing so sends wrong precedents about the rule of law in the country. The professor of virology argued that it’s in Nigeria’s interest and global image to obey court orders. Right step A coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), also speaking, described the action of the US congressman as “a right step in the right direction”. COSEYL President General, Goodluck Ibem, told Sunday Vanguard that the continued detention of Kanu “is a confirmation that the President is on a gross personal vendetta against Kanu and Ndigbo.” “We want the President to obey the UN mandate and the Court of Appeal judgment that released Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally from detention,” Ibem stated. COSEYL said the intervention of the US congressman “is proof that the decadence in our democracy and institutions has reached an alarming state where the center can no longer hold. “The US has seen with their eyes how our democracy has been reduced to an autocratic and dictatorial regime where there is no rule of law and obedience of court orders. “We urge the United States and the international community to listen to congressman Jarvis Johnson to save our hard-earned democracy before it is totally destroyed. “Injustice to one is injustice to all.
