26 Bidders Grabs Diezani’s, Other Forfeited Abuja Property

No fewer than 26 bidders have been declared winners of different property comprising apartments and plots of land forfeited to the Federal Government by the court. Some of the property located in the nation’s capital was reportedly owned by a former minister of petroleum, Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke, before its final forfeiture to the government. It would be recalled that the anti-graft agency had last year commenced the sealed bidding exercise before it began the physical aspect on Monday for those property located in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and other areas in the country. Daily Trust had reported that there was no winner for Lot 1, 2 and 3 on Monday while 6 out of 90 bidders emerged winners for Lot 4 on Tuesday. On the third day of the ongoing sale of forfeited houses and landed property being conducted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), 39 property, located in different parts of the nation’s capital were put in the Lot 5. Announcing the 26 winners on Thursday, the spokesman of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, explained that a total of 26 bids were successful, while 13 property were not taken either for non-compliance with the guidelines or the highest bid falling short of the reserve price. Uwujaren said, “At the session, a total of 39 properties in Lot 5, located in different parts of the Federal Capital Territory, were offered for sale through a competitive bidding process. The exercise which commenced at 10 am continued until 8.30 pm. “At the end of the exercise, a total of 26 bids were successful, while 13 properties not taken either for non-compliance with the guidelines or the highest bid falling short of the reserve price, or due to a tie as was the case in respect of the property listed as number 33 in the Lot, were re-opened to fresh bids until Monday, 16 January 2023 when the bids will be opened. “Other properties affected by this fresh bid offer are listed as numbers: 1, 3, 4,5,6,10,15, 18,29,30,31 and 34 in Lot 5.” Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, who observed the whole physical exercise, said the commission and the real estate valuers were working hand-in-hand in order to ensure that no property was sold below the reserved price. Bawa said, “The process we are adopting is what is practised across the world. We had valuers who valued the properties and we already know the worth of each property and we expect to sell to the highest bidder who exceeds our reserve price because we need to raise money for the Federal Government to execute and complete some of the major infrastructure projects across the country. “We got feedback from people who are asking why we are not doing it online so that more people can participate. We have tried all of that and it is now left for us to use discretion to work with methods that will help the process to be more transparent for every Nigerian to see.” One of the bidders that won one of the property, Chetanna Chukwudo, urged the commission to continue to tow the path it has been using since the auctioning processes began, saying Nigerians are expecting a lot from them. He said, “I am happy today because it feels good to be a winner, nobody wants to lose. The process was thorough and transparent but in the end we won. I want to say well done to the organizers.”

Again, Buhari Asks Foreign Envoys Not To Interfere In 2023 Elections

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, President Muhammadu Buhari has renewed calls to foreign government representatives not to meddle in Nigeria’s internal affairs. The President made this known when he received Letters of Credence from Ambassadors of Switzerland, Sweden, Republic of Ireland, the Kingdom of Thailand, the Republic of Senegal and the Republic of South Sudan at the State House. President Buhari further stated that Nigeria is working closely with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to deal with insecurity in the region and also implement strategies to contain the spate of unconstitutional changes in government in the sub-region. He called for cooperation and collaboration from the countries to overcome challenges in West Africa.   President Buhari invited friendly countries to support efforts to address the challenge of insecurity, fight against corruption, diversification of the economy, and our efforts in promoting good governance. President Buhari had in February 2022 asked foreign diplomats not to meddle in Nigeria’s politics.

North-East youths threaten to dump Shettima, APC kicks

The leadership of the North-East Youth and Stakeholders Forum of the All Progressive Congress has threatened to withdraw their support for the APC vice presidential candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima. The threat, which seems to have caused a stir in the camp of APC, is coming just 42 days before the 2023 presidential election. The North-East APC group is arguably one of the dominant voices drumming support for the candidacy of Shettima in the wake of APC standard bearer, Bola Tinubu’s victory after the presidential primary. Among other things, The PUNCH reported how the group lobbied Tinubu’s camp, the presidency and the leadership of the ruling party to consider zoning the position of running mate to the North East region. The same political group has, however, made a U-turn at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, vowing that they would withdraw support for the former governor of Borno State for continually undermining its effort. The Acting Chairman of the APC North-East Youth and Stakeholders Forum, Shaibu Tilde, told newsmen, that Shetima’s snub shortly after his victory has led to the loss of some foundational members of the structure including the Zonal Women Leader, Amina Manga of Bauchi, who defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party with over one million women. Tilde lamented that another loyalist of Shettima and Treasurer of the group, Yusuf Banki, left for the PDP with over 500,000 youths. He said, “We are saddened to be in the news for what others will interpret as a negative reason at this time, but we are also obligated by our love for our great party, the All Progressive Congress, to make this timely intervention before our party’s fortunes in the region sink. “We do not need to emphasise that this is an injury time for the game because the general elections are less than two months away, leaving no room for error, but instead attention must be focused on tightening all loose ends, which is not the case with our party in the northeast. “Ladies and gentlemen, it is with deep regret and concern that we report that the fortunes of our great party in the Northeast are on the verge of collapse due to the obstinate, careless, and exclusive leadership style of our Vice Presidential Candidate, Hon. Kashim Shettima. “The Northeast APC Youth Forum has watched with tears as its many supporters continue to defect to the PDP. Unfortunately, the trend in the Northeast zone is worsening by the day, with Sen. Kashim seemingly turning a blind eye to these heinous developments in our party in the region. “We the Youths in the Northeast have lost our Zonal Treasurer from his home state of Borno, Hon. Yusuf Shariff Banki, due to his failure to support youth in the region to launch massive mobilisation. It is worth noting, gentlemen, that Sheriff led over five hundred thousand youth to the PDP. As if that wasn’t enough, our Zonal Organising Secretary, Hon. Murtala Gamji of Taraba led over two hundred youths to the NNPP, and our Zonal Women Leader, Amina Manga of Bauchi led one million women to the PDP. “Out of the 8 million youth votes we have already mobilized for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our Presidential Candidate for the Presidential Polls, Sen. Kashim Shettime has already plundered over 3 million through his actions with the wave of defections from our party. This is simply unacceptable! “In light of this, we urge our party’s Vice Presidential Candidate, Hon. Kashim Shettima, to immediately reverse his steps and correct his error for the sake of the party, the region, and the teaming youth. “It is on record that this group, then led by its Current Acting Chairman, Hon. Shaibu Baffa Tilde, threw their support behind Sen. Kashim Shettima and committed massive resources, both human and financial, to ensure he emerged as the APC’s Vice Presidential Candidate. We do not seek compensation from Sen. Shettima, but our resentment stems from Sen. Kashim’s failure to recognize a formidable Youth force of the party that stood by him through thick and thin after realising his ambition to become reality as Vice Presidential Candidate from the northeast region. “As a result, the Northeast APC Youth Forum wishes to withdraw its unequivocal support for Sen. Shettima. Our actions should not be misinterpreted, but rather judged by our affection for our dear party. “While we intend to take our next steps regarding his candidacy in the coming days, we would like to express our unwavering support for our Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the APC. We will continue to work for the advancement and victory of our beloved party in the upcoming general elections.” Reacting to the threat, the spokesman for Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, disclosed such misunderstanding is bound to happen in the build-up to a major election. While contesting the alleged number of members who had dumped the party in the North East, Keyamo noted their grievances would be addressed. He, however, cautioned that it would also be wrong for the support group to attempt to resort to subtle blackmail to have their way. “It is an election season. Everybody is important. No doubt about that. We can assure them that whatever grievances they have will be addressed. “However, there is a need to point out corrections on some things they said. There are so many support groups working for the party in the North East and we will try to give all equal attention. While I agree that we need everybody, we don’t see recognise some people as greater than others. Everybody is important. “If some groups think they are the most important or deserve to be pampered more than others, we will not accept it. That would be subtle blackmail. The vice presidential candidate is the one who wants to treat all of them as equal as possible. He is obviously not going to pamper some over others. All groups are important. “Again, the numbers quoted in their statement

Two Nigerians arrested for allegedly duping Indian woman N6.6m

The police in India, on Wednesday, arrested two Nigerians who allegedly posed as “love gurus” to dupe an Indian doctor of N6.6 million (Rs 12.45 lakh). According to BBC, the accident which also injured 13 others has sparked widespread outrage as people accused the man of deliberately targeting people. The report said videos of the accident posted online showed the driver getting out of the car and throwing banknotes into the air, shortly after the crash. The crash occurred during the evening rush hour at a busy junction in the southern city of 19 million. “He deliberately drove into the people who were waiting for the traffic light. He rammed the car into them maliciously. After that, he made a U-turn and hit people again,” an eyewitness told local outlet Hongxin News. “He wasn’t driving too quickly, but some people couldn’t run away in time because they wouldn’t have known he was hitting people deliberately.” The man also reportedly drove into a traffic police officer and his motorcycle, but the officer managed to escape. Another circulated clip showed a young girl lying on the ground at the scene of the incident, while a woman said to be her mother wailed by her side. Another eyewitness described the chaos of the aftermath on Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter. The person said that an hour after the incident, the site was still filled with ambulances and traffic police “and they had not moved all the injured and the bodies from the scene”. “The scene was too tragic and I couldn’t bear seeing it. I felt so sad that I wanted to throw up whenever I heard the siren of the ambulance,” the person said. The incident has sparked public anger, with many expressing sorrow that it happened in the lead-up to Chinese New Year, a time for family reunions. “The victims could be a girl who dressed up meticulously to go on a date… It could be a food deliveryman who earned five yuan after rushing an order. It could be a father who wanted to go home and have dinner with the children. It could be a child who was happily shopping,” one Weibo user wrote.

Don’t hand over a sick country to a sick person – Obi warns Nigerians

As the country approaches its slated general election, the candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi has cautioned Nigerians not to hand over a ‘sick country to a sick person’. He advised that Nigerians should vote wisely, noting that it would be destructive if a sick person is elected to rule in the next four years. Obi, made the appeal in an interactive session with students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, Business School, in Enugu on Thursday. The former governor advised that Nigerians should desist from voting in someone who cannot stand for 30 minutes. His words: “This country is sick and should not be handed over to a sick person. I am not saying that everyone is sick. We have been here for over two hours, we don’t want people who can’t stand for 30 minutes. “If you said you will fight corruption, let’s go to the road you have passed and see what is remaining there after you left. “This year’s election must be based on competence. This job requires physical and mental energy, it is not a retirement job.”

Redesign of Naira long overdue – CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Thursday said the decision to redesign N200, N500 and N1,000 notes, was long overdue, saying that it followed the law and due process in its decision to redesign some of the Naira notes. The Ogun State branch Controller of the apex bank, Wahab Oseni, who said this at a sensitization programme on the newly redesigned Naira notes, held at Kuto in Abeokuta, said the decision was in the overall interest of every Nigerian. While pointing out that the standard practice globally was for Central Bank to redesign, produce and circulate new local legal tender every five to eight years, Oseni noted that the N1,000 has been in circulation for 15 year, while N500 and N200 had spent 16 years and 20 years respectively. He said, hoarding of significant sums of banknotes outside the vaults of commercial banks should be discouraged by anyone who means well for the country. He clarified that the decision to redesign the Naira notes was taken by the CBN and heads of all commercial banks in the country. He added “the introduction of the new Naira notes will help check counterfeiting. The redesign is also expected to strengthen the economy, reduce the expenditure on cash management and enhance the CBN’s visibility of the money supply” He clarified that the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria to redesign the three denominations of the Naira is not targeted at any group or persons. “The global standard period for redesigning a country’s currency is five to eight years, which means that the Naira is long overdue for redesigning. Also, having a considerable amount of money currently outside the banks back into the financial system may help ease inflationary pressures, deepen financial inclusion and enhance cashless policy”. He advised Nigerians to cultivate the habit of saving money in banks, saying that when people safe in banks it is secured. Oseni said, “data have shown that a large volume of banknote hoarding by the public, which has led to shortage of clean and fit banknotes. Increase in the rate of counterfeiting in the country and the long span of re-designation of Naira notes, which according to best practice, should be undertaken every 5 to 8 years”. Look
