Buhari Meets Ethiopian Airlines Chairman In Addis, Speaks On Nigeria Air

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday in Addis Ababa met with Girma Wake, Ethiopian Airlines Board Chairman, during which they exchanged views on the operationalization of Nigeria Air.   Wake had requested a resolution of the legal obstacle halting Nigeria Air, which Ethiopian Airlines has 49% stake, from commencing operations. He also requested the repatriation of the airline funds trapped in the country over foreign exchange challenges. On Nigeria Air, President Buhari told the Board Chairman that it was a ‘weighty decision’ by the Nigerian government to re-launch a national carrier, expressing confidence that ‘‘things will be alright.’’   Wake , who met with President Buhari on the margins of the 36th AU Summit, said the airline has been treated very well in Nigeria since it started operations 60 years ago in the country. ‘‘Nigeria is not just a market but a hub for aviation in Africa. Nigeria is a special country and nobody travels more around the globe than Nigerians,’’ he said. The aviation chief, who was accompanied on the visit by Mesfin Tasswe, Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines and Daniel Abebe, Group Vice President Strategic Planning and Alliances, hinted that the airline had plans to expand operations in the country, with additional daily flight services to Lagos from Addis Ababa, as well as Abuja-Addis Ababa. He said the airline and its partners are ready to commence operations on Nigeria Air as soon as all the court matters are resolved.

Tinubu’s Campaign Rejects Naja’atu Muhammad As PSC Coordinator

The Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the appointment of Naja’atu Muhammad as the North-West coordinator of the Police Service Commission (PSC). The PSC had appointed Muhammad, a former Director of the Civil Society Directorate of the APC PCC as one of the coordinators to supervise the conduct of police officers during the February 25 and March 11 general elections.   Muhammad had openly criticised the APC flag bearer, Bola Tinubu after she joined the camp of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The APC PCC, in a statement on Monday by its spokesman, Festus Keyamo, said, “We need not emphasise that the role given to Naja’atu requires a honest and unbiased individual who will discharge the duties diligently and without reproach. The nation will not get that from Naja’atu. “We therefore demand for the immediate withdrawal of the name of Naja’atu Bala Muhammad as a coordinator of the Police Service Commission for the North-West or any region for that matter. “She has an inalienable right to continue to campaign for any candidate of her choice and to vote for that candidate, but she cannot be given a garment to wear at this time that is meant only for neutrals.” Read full statement: PRESS RELEASE BY THE APC PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN COUNCIL: WE REJECT THE APPOINTMENT OF NAJA’ATU BALA MUHAMMAD AS A NORTHWEST COORDINATOR OF THE POLICE SERVICE COMMISSION We are deeply shocked and appalled to read a release by the Police Service Commission appointing one of its most partisan members, Naja’atu Bala Muhammad as a NorthWest coordinator of the Presidential Election. In that role, she is expected to move about freely, supervising the conduct of Police Officers during the elections. With the well-documented activities, actions and vitriols of Naja’atu in the last few weeks against our candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (after being shown the door out of the APC as a mole) we venture to say that this appointment is not only callous, it is insensitive, openly confrontational and consequently unacceptable by the Tinubu/SHETTIMA Presidential Campaign Council. Coming at a time when President Muhammadu Buhari is constantly assuring and reassuring the world of free, fair and credible elections, it confirms our worst fears that there are functionaries of government that are actively working with the opposition to thwart the avowed commitment of Mr. President. We need not emphasise that the role given to NAJA’ATU requires a honest and unbiased individual who will discharge the duties diligently and without reproach. The nation will not get that from NAJA’ATU. We therefore demand for the IMMEDIATE withdrawal of the name of NAJA’ATU Bala Muhammad as a coordinator of the Police Service Commission for the NorthWest or any region for that matter. She has an inalienable right to continue to campaign for any candidate of her choice and to vote for that candidate, but she cannot be given a garment to wear at this time that is meant only for neutrals. Again, protest rocks Ogun over naira scarcity, banks burnt

Again, protest has erupted in Ogun State over the naira scarcity, with videos online showing two banks set on fire in the Sagamu area of the state. The videos shared on Monday showed many residents watching as Keystone and Union banks were set ablaze with some youths holding planks in protest. On Friday last week, The PUNCH had reported how protest erupted in the Mowe-Ibafo area of Ogun State, with many residents blocking the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in protest of the woes and hardship caused by the lingering scarcity of the naira. Reacting to the development, a Twitter user, @arranowanna wrote, “Kindly advise your friends, families and acquaintances to avoid any protests. Take your frustration to the ballots on Saturday. Don’t burn banks, don’t burn petrol stations, don’t burn government properties.” Another user, @morningstar_305 wrote, “I just put a call through to the house and it was confirmed to me that keystone bank and union bank at ijoku has been set ablaze by angry citizens.” While popular tweep, Pooja, wrote, “If you are in Sagamu, be careful cos there is a protest on new naira notes.” Meanwhile, on Thursday last week, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in a national broadcast had said the old N500 and N1,000 notes were no longer legal tender in the country, however extending the validity of the old N200 note for 60 days, till April 10, 2023. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bola Oyeyemi, could not be reached as at the time of filing this report, as phone calls to his line were not responded to as well as text messages.

Naira redesign: Sowore knocks Atiku over U-turn, says ex-VP ‘opportunistic’

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has knocked the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, over his (Atiku’s) stance on the naira crisis ravaging the country. Sowore said Atiku was an opportunist who thought he could capitalise on the “poverty-inducing” naira redesign policy to win the presidential election. The publisher of Sahara Reporters stated this in a tweet posted to his Twitter handle on Monday morning. Sowore alleged that the naira redesign policy was “fraud” targeted at hurting “poor Nigerians.” “Opportunistic @atiku thought he could capitalise on the poverty-inducing Naira Design to win election. Any real leader would have known that ‘naira design’ fraud was gonna […] hurt poor Nigerians. Reason I keep saying there is no difference. He’s coming to sell everything,” Sowore tweeted. Sowore was reacting to Atiku’s new stance that the CBN naira redesign policy was hurting poor Nigerians after having supported the policy earlier. The former vice president in a tweet on Sunday night also urged the apex bank to allow commercial banks accept deposits of the old N500 and N1,000 notes. Atiku wrote, “The CBN currency policy is hurting ordinary citizens and those who legitimately earned their money. “The apex bank should, as a matter of urgency, allow commercial banks to join the CBN in the collection of the deposits of old N500 and N1000 notes. The new currency should be immediately made available in sufficient quantities to alleviate the suffering of the masses. “I assure you that when we come to power by the mandate of your votes, the PDP administration will not allow any Nigerian who legitimately earned their money to lose a single kobo of it. You can take that promise to the bank because our aim is to create prosperity and not to impoverish our people.” Atiku had always been in support of the naira redesign policy of the CBN and he also opposed a further extension of the February 10 deadline saying that any further extension would destroy the purpose and objective of the policy. He had, however, beseeched the Federal Government to avoid making Nigerians scapegoats “in the ongoing battle of titans over the redesign of the naira.” Meanwhile, The PUNCH reported that a group, Joint Front of Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria, on Thursday last week described the PDP candidate’s support for the naira redesign policy as “suspicious”

Fraud: Yahaya Bello’s cousin, others admitted to N2bn bail

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, admitted Ali Bello and three others to a total bail of N2bn in their N3 billion fraud trial. Justice Obiora Egwuatu held that the charges against the defendants are bailable, and that bail is to enable defendants charged with an offense to prepare well for their trial. She, therefore, ordered the defendants to pay N500 million each as bail. Bello was on February 8, 2023 arraigned alongside Abba Adauda, Yakubu Siyaka Adabenege and Iyadai Sadat, on an 18-count before Justice Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The defendants were in count one charged with procuring, “E- Traders International Limited to retain the aggregate sum of N3,081,804,654.00 which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of proceeds of unlawful activity to wit: criminal misappropriation, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to sections 18(a), 15(20)(d) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act. They were also charged with procuring “E-Traders International Limited to transfer the aggregate sum of $570,330 to account number no; 426-6644272 domiciled in TD Bank, United States of America, which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of proceeds of unlawful activity to with: criminal misappropriation, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to section 15(2)(d) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act” in count three. Delivering ruling in the applications, Justice Egwuatu held that bail is granted to the defendants in the sum of N500 million each, with two sureties in like sum. The sureties according to the Justice must reside in Abuja, with identifiable addresses. They must also own landed property worth N500 million within the jurisdiction of the court adding that the original title documents to the said property must be deposited with the Registrar of the court, together with evidence of tax payment for three years running from 2020 to 2022. Additionally, the judge held that the defendants are to deposit their international passports with the court and can only travel after due permission from the court. Subsequently, the matter was adjourned to April 16 for commencement of trial. Earlier in a previous sitting, Ahmed Raji, SAN, arguing the bail applications of the four defendants contended that the offenses against his clients are ordinarily bailable and pleaded that the court should use its discretion in favour of the defendants. In validating his argument and dismissing claims that the defendants pose a flight risk and would tamper with evidence, the senior lawyer argued that the defendants have so far posed no resistance or difficulties during the period of their investigation. He added that the EFCC granted one of the defendants permission to travel to Saudi Arabia and that the defendant kept faith by returning to Nigeria and surrendered his passport to the commission. Responding, counsel to the EFCC, M. K. Husseini, had strongly opposed the request, arguing that the defendants are likely going to jump bail and not make themselves available for trial and urged the court to deny the defendants bail. After consideration, Justice Egwuatu declared that the ruling on the bail applications would be delivered on Monday, February 20, 2023.

The United States of America (USA) has issued safety advisory to its citizens in Nigeria as the nation enters it presidential election week. The advisory issued by the US Embassy in Nigeria advised its citizens to avoid large crowds and protests before, during and after the elections slated to commence from Saturday, February 25. In a security update on its website, the embassy advised its citizens to avoid rallies as “they can turn violent with little or no notice”. The update, titled “Security Alert – Possible Protests Leading to Elections and Restricted Movements on Election Days” also told US citizens to have three days of food and water at home in case movement restrictions are extended beyond election days.   “Nigerian national elections are scheduled for February 25, 2023, and gubernatorial elections are scheduled for March 11, 2023. The government of Nigeria will restrict the movement of all personal vehicles on election days across the country. Information from the Government of Nigeria indicates that only law enforcement personnel and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)-accredited election observers will be allowed to move freely along the roads,” the update reads. “Based on past election practice, we anticipate personal vehicles will be blocked from any and all attempted road movement from 00:00 until 18:00 February 25 and 00:00 until 18:00 March 11. Naira redesign: CBN withdrew N2trn, printed only N400bn – El-Rufai

Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state has accused the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, of withdrawing N2 trillion from circulation and replacing the old notes by minting only N400 billion. El-Rufai made this allegation in a tweet via his verified Twitter handle, on Sunday. He said the apex bank only confiscated the currency as against what was obtainable in the currency swap policy. His tweet reads, “During the implementation of the cash swap, the CBN withdrew over N2 trillion from circulation but printed only N400 billion, so in effect, currency confiscation was then unilaterally and unlawfully implemented by the CBN. Trade and exchange have collapsed. Human suffering, impoverishment, and economic contraction resulted. “The policy objective was derailed into a deliberate national fiasco to sabotage the elections to prevent vote-buying. All efforts to get CBN to implement what was lawfully approved far. The governor claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari approved redesigning of the naira, but the CBN did something different, regarding the redesigning and swapping of the currency. According to El-Rufai, President Buhari approved redesigning the N200, N500, and N1000 notes, whereas the CBN only did recolour. He stated, “Currency redesign was approved by the President and announced. Currency recoloring resulted. “Currency swap was envisaged by s.20(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act as approved by PMB. Swap means I take N100,000 to the bank in old notes & I receive N100,000 immediately in new notes. No more, no less.” Recall that the naira crisis peaked last Thursday after the President’s national broadcast, which countered the Supreme Court by extending the validity of old N200 notes, while insisting that old N500 and N1,000 remained illegal. Buhari urged Nigerians to deposit their old N500 and 1000 notes with the CBN, adding that the old N200 note would be legal tender for the next 60 days till April 10.

APC National Vice Chairman Suspended For Anti-party Activities

The North East National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Mustapha Salihu has found himself in the middle of a controversial suspension by his ward. After a similar ‘suspension’ over the weekend of the party’s governorship candidate, Senator Aishatu Ahmed Binani, this is the second chieftain of the party to be so treated in Adamawa State within a couple of days. Following alleged “gross abuse of office, conspiracy and acts typical of anti-party”, the leadership of the APC in Rumde Ward of Yola North local government area, announced via a statement made public late on Sunday that Mustapha Salihu had been suspended from the party. They accused the National Vice Chairman of associating with the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. In the suspension letter addressed to the National Chairman of the party through the acting state chairman and the chairman APC Yola North local government area and jointly signed by the ward’s vice chairman, the secretary and 16 other executive members of the party in the ward, the ward executives wished that the suspension would be favourably acted upon. The notice of Salihu’s suspension read, “The All Progressives Congress, Rumde ward working committee, Yola North LGA held an emergency meeting on Sunday 19th February, 2023 and considered among many other things before it, the immediate suspension of the north-east vice-chairman of the APC, Comrade Mustapha Salihu over glaring and proven anti-party activities, gross abuse of office and creating crisis within the ranks of the party at all levels which if left unchecked will affect the party at the forthcoming general elections. “Therefore, in compliance with the relevant provisions of the constitution of our great party, the members of the working committee have adopted and approved the suspension of comrade Mustapha Salihu for the period of six months with immediate effect so as to serve as a deterrent to others in the future. This committee is very much aware of the responsibilities vested on it by the party and will always ensure the supremacy of the party above any personal interest of any person or group of persons especially when that poses danger to the chances of the party at the polls. “While appreciating the state working committee of our party for your continued support, we hope our resolution will receive accelerated treatment.” As in the case of Binani, however, the state leadership of the party has come out to declare Salihu’s suspension null and void. The Adamawa State Working Committee (SWC) of the APC described the said suspension of Salihu as illegal. The State Secretary of the Party, Dr. Raymond Chidama, in a statement obtained Monday morning, said faceless persons were being used by the enemies of the party to disrupt the chances of the party winning the coming elections. In apparent resolve to pave the way for Salihu’s suspension, the Rumde Ward APC executives had first suspended their ward chairman, Abdulkadir Abdullahi who, it is now obvious, resisted the plan against Salihu. The embattled ward chairman has come out to condemn his suspension, insisting that he remains the chairman and that Mustapha Salihu has done nothing to merit suspension. Condemning the suspension of the Rumde Ward Party Chairman, the party’s state secretary, Raymond declared that the “interloping attitude” of the Rumde Ward executives is unconstitutional and of no effect.
