I asked questions about what happened to my daughter and the school authority could not get me any information as to what happened to my child in their care. “I gave Chrisland school a healthy vibrant young girl what Chrisland returned to me is a dead child. My entire family is in deep sorrow but the school Authority claimed they know nothing about my daughter’s death and all they know is that my daughter slumped and died.” Adeniran further said the school had no ambulance or paramedics at the event, except for a nurse he described as a “quack,” who he said later confessed that the child died at the stadium He added that, “My question is what happened to my daughter at Agege stadium? As a father, I demand answers from Chrisland International High School. I am in deep pain and sorrow right now. If you are a father you will understand my pain. My daughter is highly loved by us. Yakassai: No candidate will get 70% of northern votes — but nothing will stop Tinubu’s victory

Tanko Yakassai, an elder statesman, says no presidential candidate will have 70 percent of northern votes. Yakassai said northern votes might be equally shared among the four major presidential candidates. Speaking in an interview with Punch, the elder statesman said nothing will stop Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), from winning the election, if it is free and fair. “My belief is that if the election is conducted freely and fairly, nothing will stop (Asiwaju Bola Ahmed) Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, from winning the election,” he said. “But I see some bigwigs expressing disapproval of his ambition. Some of them are within the APC and some are in opposition parties. “My belief is that such people, if they find it difficult to win the election, may resort to malpractices, which may include rigging. “I don’t see any candidate taking maybe 70 percent of the total northern votes in this election.   “I know many of the votes will be shared and at worst equally between the candidates. “The candidates coming from the north, in my opinion, are rarely going to be on the ballot. “They will split the vote in the north and chances are that the chunk of votes Tinubu will get from the voters in the north will be higher than those of the other strong three candidates. “The three people being mentioned are very strong contenders. The possibility is that the votes in the north will be split into so many places. “If that happens, the likelihood is that the chunk of votes will go to Tinubu compared to any one of them. He is likely to get more votes than any of them.” Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are among the leading contenders in the presidential race.

IPoB: British envoy sabotaging moves to free Nnamdi Kanu —US lawyer

Bruce Fein, a United States of America, USA-based counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has accused the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, of conniving with the Nigerian government to detain Kanu in perpetuity. Kanu has remained in detention at the Abuja headquarters of the Department of State Services, DSS, since June 2021 when he was extraordinarily renditioned to Nigeria from Kenya.   Fein accused Laing of complicity and complacency over Kanu’s ordeals, alleging that the envoy was personally sabotaging efforts to release the IPoB leader.   In a letter to the British envoy dated February 10, 2023, and made available to Sunday Vanguard, Kanu’s lawyer expressed disbelief that Britain and her High Commissioner would be unmoved over the continued illegal detention of her citizen against court orders and the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. The US lawyer expressed shock that despite the opinion of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, Nigeria should unconditionally release Kanu, Laing who should have capitalized on that to press for Kanu’s freedom, looked the other way. Fein, therefore, sought to know the motive behind her silence over the ordeals of Kanu, a British citizen. “What is your ulterior motive? Oil and gas for the United Kingdom? Lucrative UK business arrangements? he queried. The letter read in part: “Evidence has surfaced that you personally are sabotaging Mr Kanu’s unconditional release as mandated under jus cogens norms of international law binding on all nations irrespective of consent. You have taken cynicism and hypocrisy to a new level. “Your government has taken extreme umbrage at Russian President, Vladimir Putin’s violation of international law in attacking Ukraine and committing war crimes, but you have made the UK complicit in flouting international law like Mr. Putin by affirmatively encouraging the government of Nigeria to continue its illegal detention of Nnamdi Kanu. “You and your country plunged to new depths. You go to war over the Falkland Islands thousands of miles from English shores with a tiny population of 3,500 to keep them free from Argentinian misgovernment. But Nnamdi Kanu, a British citizen, is abandoned to the cruel, lawless dungeon of Nigeria’s DSS.” Fein had also earlier this year, written to President Muhammadu Buhari, reminding him of the dire consequences of keeping Kanu in illegal detention against UN Opinion and various court orders authorizing his immediate and unconditional release.

Banks reject old naira notes, oil marketers threaten strike

Oil marketers have threatened to close their filling stations in protest against the rejection of old naira notes by deposit money banks across the country. It was gathered that the banks issued circulars to some of the filling stations, urging them to stop accepting the old bills, as the DMBs would not collect them from marketers. This followed the controversy about whether the Central Bank of Nigeria would phase out the old naira notes on February 10, as traders and other retailers also rejected the old currencies. Sunday PUNCH gathered that many traders in the Federal Capital Territory, Ogun, and Lagos states had started rejecting the old N1,000, N500, and N200 notes. The traders claimed that old notes collected from sales made were rejected by banks on Friday morning. The development left many residents stranded with many having to find means to do bank transfers. Explaining why some of the stations were rejecting the notes, the Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abuja-Suleja, Mohammed Shuaibu, said, “There is a serious crisis now; bankers are not helping the system. “They are passing circulars around now, asking filling stations not to collect old naira notes again. The bankers are saying filling stations should stop collecting old notes. And now, many of these filling stations are closing because where they make their deposits, the old notes are no longer permitted there. “If this should continue, it is going to lead to a serious problem. They are asking us not to accept old notes because they won’t collect them from us. This is what is happening. So many of our members are now closing sales.” He said some of these banks closed operations for the day before the expected time, stressing that Nigerians should not blame the filling stations for not selling products whenever they noticed the closure of retail outlets. by the Federal Government that marketers should use point-of-sales machines and accept bank transfers, the IPMAN official said his members were willing to comply. “Some of these bank transfers are usually reversed, while at times, the transferred money will not get to the receiver. These are the problems we face with the network providers. “However, we’ve been taking the pains to see that we help the government in alleviating the plights of the masses. But if these banks are now telling filling stations that they are not going to collect the old notes, it is going to be a problem. “So, it is better for the authorities to call these banks to order immediately, otherwise, by the time we shut down, it is going to create a massive problem nationwide,” Shuaibu added. The spokesperson for the Association of Corporate Affairs Managers of Banks, Rasheed Bolarinwa, promised to reveal the position of the banks when he was contacted but had yet to do so as of the time of filing the interview. Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has said the Federal Government has taken bold actions to stop the ongoing petrol crises across the country. Sylva, who gave the assurance after his tour of some selected petroleum dispensing outlets in Lagos on Friday, also assured Nigerians of massive distribution of the product. “Fuel is everywhere, both in Lagos and Abuja. I visited many stations in Ikeja and on the mainland. From every indication, there are products everywhere and I want to assure you that the queues will disappear in a matter of days,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted him as saying.
