Tinubu was declared winner of the February 25 presidential election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).   He is expected to be sworn in on May 29 by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. Despite INEC declaration of the winner, opposition candidates from other parties have contested that Tinubu did not win the presidential poll. Nothing can stop me from becoming Nigeria’s president – Peter Obi

Presidential Candidate of Labour Party in the February 25 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, says his ambition of leading Nigeria will materialise someday. Speaking at the presentation of a book entitled: “Peter Obi: Many voices, one Perspectives”, in Awka, Anambra State capital, on Friday, Obi said nothing can stop him from becoming the president. The book presentation was organised to raise fund to enable Mr Peter Obi pursue his ongoing election court case. Obi said he will continue to follow the legal path in expressing his grievances and reclaiming his mandate in court. “Anyone who thinks I’m on transit is wasting his time. Let me tell you, I must be the president of this country. I’m sure of that. If it is not today, it must be tomorrow.” “Other people who want to be, should come and tell us what they want to do, and how to do it. This is my country, I don’t have dual citizenship. If anyone thinks I am going to run away from Nigeria, they are lying. “I have three engagements in Anambra and Lagos today. I will be speaking in Lagos tonight. We will not leave Nigeria. I am not in a hurry to become the president, but I know it must happen. “For three years I was in court in Anambra to reclaim my governorship, just to challenge the process. Many people tried to discourage me, but I said even if the entire four years tenure elapsed for us to prove a point and correct the process, I will be fulfilled. “I was in an event yesterday in Abuja, and it was World Food Organisation. I listened to report that stated that Nigeria will face intense hunger in years to come. “It is Nigeria that will face hunger, not Peter Obi. The report listed Borno, Adamawa and Yobe as the states that will be worse hit, but those three states put together are five times larger in land mass of Israel, yet Egypt exports food, but Nigeria cannot feed itself. “So we must cultivate a habit of doing the right thing. If we don’t do the right thing, it will consume us some day.” “I must be the president of this country; if not today, it will be next time. I’m not desperate; I’m not in a hurry. I’m committed to cause of better Nigeria,” he said. Obi also said he would respect the decision of the court in the ongoing electoral dispute. “We are peaceful, we are not going to quarrel with any politician. Don’t be discourage about my apologies to people. As youth, we cannot fight our fathers, even when we are right.” “We are not going to riot . I am in Nigeria; I don’t not have dual citizenship; I will not run away; we must be here to right the wrong in the country,” he stated. Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Afred Achebe, Catholic bishop of Awka diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, were among dignitaries at the event.

Narrating her ordeal to the Honourable Commissioner, Mrs Eligbue who lost her husband a long time ago noted that although she’s from Obe Agwa, her husband is from Atani both in Ogbaru local government area of the state. She went on to say that after her husband’s death, she has been subjected to all kinds of abuse ranging from her husband’s family calling her a witch and other kinds of physical abuse. According to her, one day the husband’s siblings invaded her house where she was staying with her only child and started beating her allegeding that she’s responsible for all the unfortunate things happening to them. She said that it was after the incident that her relatives ran to her aid and while she was about to go with them, her husband’s family refused stating that she needs to stay till after a burial ceremony of the husband’s nephew who died. The poor widow explained that on the day of the burial, she was summoned inside the room where they kept the dead body by one Mr Albert, Godwin, Ozoemina and Onyeàmà. She said that they placed a cutlass on the deceased body and asked her to walk over it four times of which she did before they washed off the corpse and forced her to drink the water before pouring the remaining on her. LP Faction Backs Tinubu’s Swearing In, Accuses Obi Of Making Illegal Request

The Labour Party faction led by Lamidi Apapa has distanced itself from agitation that the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, should not be sworn in pending the resolution of the petitions before the presidential election tribunal. There was uproar when Archbishop John Onaiyekan, an elder statesman, said the judiciary ought to have given its verdict on the dispute over the election before the next president is sworn in. But in a statement, Abayomi Arabambi, spokesman of the Lamidi faction, said the Electoral Act and the Constitution do not provide room for a vacuum. “Swearing in Tinubu on May 29, may not have any impact on the ongoing legal tussle on the presidential election involving our party, APC and INEC. So, whether the President-elect is sworn in or not, there is right to remove him legally if it is found out that he was not duly elected,” Arabambi said. Citing sections 136 and 146 of the constitution, he said, “What Peter Obi is crying for is not supported by the law. A refusal to swear in Tinubu as President will create a vacuum in the system, the law abhors this. “Even Peter Obi once benefitted from the system of being sworn into office despite pending petitions filed against him before the tribunal by Andy Uba. The Law has to be complied with, which is to swear in Tinubu as president, and if anybody wants to change the narrative, they will have to change the law.” Reacting in a statement, acting National Publicity Secretary, Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, said the comments of Arabambi and Apapa have confirmed that they are moles planning to destroy the party for pecuniary gains. “The text of the statement which was read as commercial in about three television stations in prime time hours suggests that the real sponsors of the crisis in the LP would stop at nothing in ensuring that they sustain the imbroglio.” “The huge financial war-chest being deployed to achieve this inglorious plot to halt a popular aspiration of millions of Nigerians for a new and prosperous nation, leaves a huge gap on the dexterity and desperation of these evil plotters. “In all Peter Obi’s public and private statements, he has never said or by implication, insinuate that May 29 should be shifted. He is a democrat and he is one person that believes so much in the judiciary as the last arbiter, and that is why he has resorted to the court to seek justice,” Ifoh said. He said that LP is worried by faction’s usage as the mouth-piece by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to express their fears, especially on the possibility of not making it to Eagle square on the 29th May, which has continued to give them both sleepless night and has pushed them into deploying an already compromised and fallen members of the LP, led by Apapa and Arabambi as their mouth piece.

Ozekhome to supreme court: I’m scared Nnamdi Kanu might die in DSS custody

Mike Ozekhome, senior counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has told the supreme court that he is scared that his client might die in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Speaking on Thursday during the hearing of Kanu’s case, Ozekhome told the apex court that the IPOB leader is very sick and requires a surgical operation. The lawyer asked the court to rule in favour of the transfer of Kanu from DSS custody to Kuje correctional centre so that he can begin treatment. “My Lords, Nnamdi Kanu is sick, he has been approved for surgery but they have refused to release him for treatment,” BBC News Pidgin quoted Ozekhome as saying. “We are pleading for him to be transferred from DSS custody to Kuje correctional centre so that he can begin treatment like others. “He’s getting really sick, I’m scared he may die in the custody of DSS. Dead bodies are not prosecuted.” Reacting to Ozekhome’s plea, the apex court said God will keep the IPOB leader alive and that he will not die in detention. The court said even if it proceeds to hear the appeal, there is no space within its calendar to write and deliver the verdict within the 90-day deadline. “Nnamdi Kanu will not die in detention. God will keep him alive and his blood won’t be in your hands,” the court said. The apex court added that the court will hear all the motions in the case on the resumption of hearing on September 14. The IPOB leader has been in DSS since he was brought back from Kenya on June 19, 2021. Subsequently, the federal government filed terrorism charges against Kanu. On April 8 2022, Binta Nyako, a federal high court judge in Abuja, struck out eight of the 15 counts in the charge. The remaining seven counts were later quashed by the court of appeal on October 13, 2022. On October 28, 2022, the court of appeal granted a stay of execution on its verdict which discharged Kanu of terrorism charges filed against him by the federal government. Kanu and his lawyers are at the supreme court to appeal the verdict of the court of appeal.
