Autopsies Reveal Missing organs In Kenya Church Deaths

Autopsies on corpses found in mass graves linked to a church in Kenya have revealed missing organs and raised suspicions of forced harvesting, investigators said, with a fresh round of exhumations set to resume Tuesday. The discovery of mass graves last month near the Indian Ocean coastal town of Malindi has stunned the deeply religious Christian-majority country in what has been dubbed the “Shakahola forest massacre”. Police believe most of the bodies belong to followers of self-styled pastor Paul Nthenge Mackenzie who is accused of ordering them to starve to death “to meet Jesus.” While starvation appears to be the main cause of death, some of the victims — including children — were strangled, beaten, or suffocated, according to the chief government pathologist Johansen Oduor. Court documents filed on Monday said that some of the corpses had their organs removed, with police alleging that the suspects were engaged in forced harvesting of body parts.   “Post mortem reports have established missing organs in some of the bodies of victims who have been exhumed,” chief inspector Martin Munene said in an affidavit filed to a Nairobi court. It is “believed that trade on human body organs has been well coordinated involving several players,” he said, giving no details about the suspected trafficking. Munene said that Ezekiel Odero, a high-profile televangelist who was arrested last month in connection with the same case and granted bail on Thursday, had received “huge cash transactions,” allegedly from Mackenzie’s followers who sold their property at the cult leader’s bidding. The Nairobi court ordered the authorities to freeze more than 20 bank accounts belonging to Odero for 30 days. A total of 112 people have so far been confirmed dead, interior minister Kithure Kindiki said Tuesday after arriving in Malindi to supervise the resumption of exhumations, which were suspended last week because of bad weather. “Search and rescue efforts for persons suspected to be holed up in the thickets and bushes have been going on,” Kindiki said. Questions have been raised about how Mackenzie managed to evade law enforcement despite a history of extremism and previous legal cases. The former taxi driver turned himself in on April 14 after police acting on a tip-off first entered Shakahola forest, where some 30 mass graves have now been found. Prosecutors are asking to hold the father of seven, who founded the Good News International Church in 2003, for another 90 days until investigations are completed. Senior principal magistrate Yusuf Shikanda said he would rule on the request on Wednesday.

Power supply restored in Imo after Labour agreed to end strike

There is a relief for Imo residents on Monday night after power supply was restored in the State. Recall that rhe national leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) agreed to suspend their industrial action in Imo State to enable peaceful resolution of all outstanding issues in an atmosphere of mutuality. The decision is contained in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Imo state government and the unions. According to the MoU which was signed by the Secretary to the Government of Imo State and Attorney General of Imo state on the government side, and the 4-man delegate sent from the national leadership of NLC and TUC, the tripartite committee will look into the areas of disagreeing and misunderstanding and resolve expeditiously. Last week Tuesday, following the withdrawal of services by affiliates of the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress in Imo state, the Imo state government has again lashed out on the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, accusing him of using the Labour platform to fight a personal war. This followed the immediate shutdown of power supply and flight services in Imo state after the NLC had accused the state government of deploying thugs and armed operatives to disrupt the Workers Day rally at the Labour House in Owerri. Checks by our correspondent on Tuesday showed that power has been restored in some parts of Owerri metropolis. In some areas in Owerri like the MCC, Uratta, residents complained that power was never steady since Monday night. At Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport Owerri, our correspondent learnt on Tuesday morning that full operations have resumed as flights arrives and departs without hindrance.

Imo has not implemented minimum wage, Labour chairman

…Says, NLC did not endorse Uzodinma The recent stand-off between the Nigerian Labour Congress and Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo state may have thrown up a lot of dark areas in the present administration. This is also as the Imo state Chairman of the NLC, Comrade George Ofoegbu has said that Imo state has not implemented the N30,000 minimum wage in the state. Ofoegbu who spoke to our correspondent on the phone said: “More than 90 percent of the states of the federation have fully implemented the minimum wage and Imo is not on that list. Of the few states outstanding, Imo is one of the three states in the South-East that have not implemented the minimum wage and its consequential adjustments. So how can we leave these more pressing issues of workers’ welfare to go around looking for who to endorse. The people that endorsed the Governor for a second tenure are not labour leaders but most likely people out to fend for their own pockets.” Ofoegbu however noted that in some areas, Governor Uzodinma may have done well but he nevertheless stressed that: “No matter what personal benefit anybody may obtain from this government, the labour standard remains that if one worker is not paid, no worker has been paid; if one pensioner has not been paid, then pensioners have not been paid and if one teacher did not get his salary, then no teacher has been paid.” He regretted that the lockdown and withdrawal of services of its affiliates imposed on Imo by the NLC was unfortunate, but became necessary following a series of violent attacks and interference in the affairs of the Imo NLC which reached a breaking point last May 1st when workers were holding their Workers’ Day rally at the Labour House. “For the second time in two months, the Imo state government deployed thugs and hoodlums backed by security operatives to attack and beat up workers at the Labour House on May Day. About forty canopies, furniture and then electronics set up for the labour rally were destroyed by the rampaging thugs. Two of our members were admitted to hospital while one, the DJ’s arm, was broken. This is why Organized Labour at the National Level took a firm decision to sanction the state, deter the governor from such high-handedness and by so doing, protect it’s members.
