How soldiers killed my aide — Senator Adeola

The lawmaker representing Ogun West, Senator Solomon Adeola, has alleged that soldiers of the Nigerian Army were responsible for the death of his aide, Adeniyi Sanni. The senator made this known in a statement on Monday, signed by his media aide, Kayode Odunaro. It had been reported that the lawmaker lost his aide, Sanni, in the early hours of Saturday, August 5, 2023. Senator Adeola had earlier stated that information available to him on the circumstances indicated that Sanni was stopped at a checkpoint around the Ojodu-Berger Area of Lagos on his way to his home at Isheri by “security agents.” The deceased was asked to provide the documents of the car he was driving, which he did through a call to his wife, who sent all the documents to his phone through a WhatsApp message. Subsequently, the wife called a while later, and the late Sanni told him soldiers were still checking the vehicle’s documents. That was the last she heard from her husband, and the remains of Sanni, ridden with bullets, were later discovered at the Toyota Bus Stop area of Oshodi, close to a military barrack. Senator Adeola, however, clarified on Monday that his aide was killed by men of the Nigerian military. He said, “I am of the firm belief, based on available facts at the disposal of the Police, that his aide was killed by a syndicate of soldiers operating under the newly deployed Commander of 9 Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment of the Nigeria Army, Brigadier General Nsikan Edet, through the mounting of checkpoints and robbing of lone occupants of cars. Top police sources familiar with the investigation informed me that a similar brutal killing and armed robbery occurred around the same Ojodu-Berger late Thursday night of August 17, 2023, resulting in the killing of another Nigerian whose body was discovered around Iyana-Ipaja after he was taken away by soldiers from the checkpoint. “Unknown to the soldiers, the occupant of the car they killed and took away his car was the second car in a convoy of two heading towards the same destination. “The first car passed the soldier’s checkpoint, but the second car was stopped to check his vehicle’s papers.” The lawmaker further stated, “On noticing the absence of the second car after a while, the occupant of the first car (name withheld) placed a call to his colleague in the second car, who informed him that he was being taken to Iyana Ipaja by the soldiers at the checkpoint. “That was the last he heard from him, and his dead body was later discovered dumped on the road, just like Mr Sanni. The survivor in the first car reported the case to the Police, and a pattern of armed robbery and killing in the area involving men in Army uniforms was established.” The lawmaker, therefore, called on the Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, to direct the fishing out of the killers of his aide for further investigation, prosecution, and justice for the deceased. He said such a pattern of killings and armed robbery had been established against soldiers mounting late-night checkpoints around Ikeja, with similar unreported incidents in recent times around Ikeja. “To date, the black Toyota Camry of Mr Sanni, his phones, and other valuables are yet to be recovered,” he lamented.

Oyewole also alleged that the defendant used a machete to cut the children’s heads and other parts of their bodies, leading to their death. Navy arrests 10 oil thieves with over 100 jerry cans

Men of the Nigerian Navy have arrested 10 suspected pipeline vandals while attempting to steal crude from the sea in Lagos. The suspects were arrested in the early hours of Sunday at the Single Point Mooring buoy, a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited’s facility where tankers unload products, which are eventually transferred into tank farms for distribution. They were arrested in three speedboats with over 100 pieces of 50-litre jerry cans with hoses connected to drain the product from the vessel. The Commander, NNS BEECROFT, Kolawale Oguntuga, paraded the suspects at the NNS Beecroft Naval Base parade ground, Apapa Lagos on Monday before handing them over to the Area Commander of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Musa Jubril. Oguntuga said, “In the early hours of Sunday, the technology electronically detected intruders on board the SBM operated by the NNPCL. Immediately a patrol team was activated and on getting there, 10 suspected vandals and oil thieves were found onboard this facility with divers equipment; pumping machines and hoses to steal crude products, and they were apprehended. “We are here today to hand over these oil thieves to the public security agency to carry out their due diligence. “They were arrested around 2am on board the facility with over 100 pieces of 50-litre jerry cans. Some were already inside while others were on the boat controlling and channelling the hoses into the cans.” Jubril of the NSCDC appreciated the Navy for the good work they had been doing, stressing that the agency will unravel the sponsors of the thieves.

Nigeria’s net FX reserves likely fell to $3.7bn at end of 2022, says JP Morgan

JP Morgan, an American multinational financial services firm, estimates that Nigeria’s net foreign exchange (FX) reserves fell to $3.7 billion as of the end 2022 . This is contained in the firm’s latest report titled ‘Nigeria: Reform pause rather than fatigue’. Gross FX reserves represent the government’s total holdings of foreign currency reserves. Net FX reserves deduct foreign currency liabilities from gross foreign currencies reserves. According to Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) data, the country’s gross FX reserves stood at $36.61 billion as of end of 2022. Nigeria’s FX reserves play a crucial role in defending the naira and covers the country’s huge import bills. In its report, JP Morgan said the $3.7 billion figure is significantly lower than prior estimates, owing to larger-than-expected currency swaps and borrowing against existing reserves. “Based on partial information from the audited financial accounts, we estimate that CBN’s net FX reserves were around US$3.7bn at the end of last year, from US$14.0bn at end-2021,” the report reads. The firm clarified that it arrived at $3.7 billion by making some assumptions which if incorrect would change the estimated figure. “In arriving at said estimate we make a few assumptions which if incorrect would substantially change the picture. They include: (i) an addition of US$5.0bn in IMF Special Drawing Rights (SDR) to external reserves in order to arrive at total gross FX reserves of US$37.8bn, broadly in line with the 30-day moving average of US$37.08bn previously published on the central bank’s website,” the report further reads. (ii) adjusting the gross external reserves with three key FX liability lines that include FX forwards (US$6.84bn), securities lending (US$5.5bn) and currency swaps (US$21.3bn); and (iii) estimating currency swaps by backing out FX forwards and outstanding OTC Futures balances from an overall aggregate published in the financial accounts.” JP Morgan, however, said that although low net FX reserves mean continued FX market pressures, the CBN still has the ability to source FX at commercial and semi-commercial rates. “Given the highly profitable nature of the currency swap arrangements between the CBN and domestic commercial banks, we expect these to continue for sometime, albeit in smaller sizes and arguably more punitive rates,’ the report adds. “Furthermore, authorities are in the initial stages of identifying assets for sale, which may provide some medium-term relief. For example, the President’s policy advisory council has recommended the government sell down its stake in the most joint-venture oil and gas assets, a proposal that is estimated to bring in up to US$17bn. “In addition, the recently announced US$3bn loan to NNPC could help partly improve FX liquidity conditions in the market. We expect NNPC to sell the dollars to CBN and remit the naira proceeds to the government as upfront payments for oil revenues and taxes. That being said, the large external financing needs of the private sector will sustain FX pressure.” ‘HEADLINE INFLATION TO RISE IN COMING MONTHS’ JP Morgan said it expected that headline inflation will still remain elevated, particularly due to higher food costs. “We believe July’s inflation print is early evidence of the impact of the fiscal and FX reforms which are likely to continue pushing headline inflation higher over the coming months,” JP Morgan said in its report. “Higher parallel market rates in recent weeks are also likely to have an impact on August’s inflation reading and will be most notable in higher food and core prices. The core inflation measure (excluding food and energy costs) rose by 20.5% in July, from 20.1% recorded in June. We now see headline inflation rising towards 28%oya by year-end.” The firm said President Bola Tinubu’s decision to keep a cap on petrol prices is likely to provide some relief but the exchange rate is likely to remain on a depreciating path and put further pressure on prices.

UNICAL sexual harassment saga: Dean to refund illegal monies extorted from law students- VC

The management of the University of Calabar has directed the former Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof.Cyril Ndifon to refund all illegal monies extorted from students under various sub-heads. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Florence Obi, disclosed this yesterday while addressing Newsmen in her chambers on issues surrounding the alleged sexual harassment, extortion and other corrupt practices levelled against the embattled Dean by students. She said the move was among some of the resolutions adopted by the management to address some of the issues raised and that various committees have been set up to look into all the allegations. It will be recalled that on August 14, 2023, faculty of law students staged a protest in front of the V.C.’s office accusing the former Dean of sexual harassment, extortion and highhandedness, among others. Following this, he was suspended by the institution’s management pending the outcome of the panel report. She said, ” Today, I am before you with mixed feelings; feelings of sadness, that, we are on the headlines globally over a seemingly ignominious issue and on the other hand slightly glad that we have a glorious opportunity to set things right as it affects our work ethics and cherished values in the University. “Management resolved with the staff on the need for some basic changes to be effected, to avoid the continuous overbearing influence and power of any Dean of Faculty of Law over the students. “Some of the immediate actions taken were; the setting up of a Committee to take charge of students’ mobilization to Law School. “The Dean to refund all illegal monies extorted from the students under various sub-heads, among other decisions. “A review and possible recall of the students’ list sent to Law School Removal from the office of the two examination officers and the setting up of a Result Vetting Committee. Setting up Students’ Project Committee to assign Project supervisors to the undergraduates “Setting up of Admission Committee to review Direct Entry Admissions. Setting up of a Committee to update the existing Standard Operations Procedure(SOP) of the University to take care of the peculiarities of the Faculty of Law, for Senate approval. “Appointment of a new interim Chairman of the Faculty’s Post-Graduate School Board.Setting up a Committee to review and assign courses for the semester in compliance with the University procedure on quality assurance “The Dean and the Sub-Dean were directed to submit all the result scripts, question papers, marking guides and examination attendance lists for the past two sessions to the Director of Quality Assurance.” She stated. The V.C. disclosed that aside from the few staff members of the University that would form the panel, Management has acceded to the request of UNICAL Alumni, the Federation of Female Lawyers, and the Federal Public Complaints Commission to be part of the investigation. She said the institution decided to bring those bodies to be part of the process because their involvement speaks volumes in getting to the bottom of the alleged ugly incidents.

Since her rescue, she has undergone thorough medical examination in our medical facility,” NAN quoted Chibuisi as saying. “Equally, she has been adequately resuscitated and would be handed over to Borno State Government for further administration.” Chibuisi said the Nigerian military is committed to containing security challenges in the north east and restore lasting peace in the region. Speaking to journalists about her experience since the abduction in 2014, Nkeki said being in the den of the terrorists was full of suffering. Nkeki said that she escaped with her husband in the night and was picked up by a military patrol team, adding that she left two other Chibok girls behind.
