Why youths stand for Mohbad in death

By Owei Lakemfa Emerging musician, 27-year-old Ilerioluwa Aloba alias Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023 of undisclosed reasons and crowds poured out in the streets. In Lagos, youths marched in Lekki, Iju-Ishaga and Ikorodu with a huge concert at the Muri Okunola Park on Victoria Island featuring leading musicians like Davido, Falz and Zlatan. Youths in Taraba State rolled on the streets and held candle light procession in Abuja. They marched in Anambra, Oyo, Ondo, Delta, Ekiti, Cross Rivers, Ogun, Osun and Edo states. People were also on the march in Nairobi, Kenya where Nigerian music and films are quite popular, and London and New York with large Nigerian migrant populations. The message was the same: ‘Justice For Mohbad’ as if they are certain that he would not get justice unless they move to put pressure on the Nigerian state.   The tidal waves of protests caught many of us by surprise, especially when those widely accused of complicity in his death are members of his former record label and manager. So, why are people who have not protested the biting inflation that has seen the price of rice rise in eight years from N7,500 to N58,000 and the Naira in the same period crashing from about N200 to N1,000, taking to the streets for a rising youth? Why are youths who have not rallied against the plethora of new fees in the universities, mass abduction of students in schools and kidnap of youths answering the national call to serve, on the streets for a relatively new musician whose first album was just three years ago? First, his story of rising from want and deprivation, surviving a broken home, emerging from the streets and striving to build a future with street music despite alleged attacks and torture by his former managers, resonated with the youths. They identified more with his life story not so much because they read about him or listened to his few interviews, but because he had a direct dialogue with them through his lyrics. In his ‘Peace’ musical track, in which he talked about “frenemies”, he sang: “Been through many things, Many many gists But, I still find my peace (Imole) Oh-ah I do like say me I no dey see Like say I no dey hear Which kind person be this?” In it, he described himself as: “Money chaser, faster than a bullet Flyin’ like a rocket Badman wey never rest King of South and the West Faster than a car…” In ‘Feel Good’ he sang: “Plenty enemy (Mohbad) Wey dey follow me Maje k’o mumi (Don’t let him catch me) Even if na die minute Emi omo (I, a child of the) ghetto … I don work tire I don pray tire I don go Mountain of Fire I know there is a day All my pains will go away… Til then, I smoke it away…” He also playfully sang in a video in which he was wearing jersey No 7: “If I dey play football, I go bench Messi, bench Nemar, bench Ronaldo…” Certainly, Mohbad was no Bob Marley, Max Romeo or Fela who addressed social issues. Apart from telling his personal stories, his focus was being on the fast lane; making money, women, cars and living the good life. For instance, on education, he sang: “I know know mathematics…Mathematics teacher wey no get money na jangbajastics”(Nonsense). Mohbad is a story of hope turned hopelessness, a rising star, shot down from the firmament, and a youth whose promising life was avoidably cut short by a harsh, uncaring system. A system that failed a youth when he persistently cried for help, when he feared for his life. After physical altercations with the management and members of his old record label, he went public. In a video he posted, the clearly traumatised youth said: “I’m at the hospital for CT Scan for head impact and chest X-ray as a result of the assault. I had the meeting clear headed and without any influence too.” In response, the owner of his former Marlian Records label, Mr Azeez Fashola, popularly called Naira Marley, said in his own video: “If Mohbad didn’t do a video, I wouldn’t bother explaining because it is nothing big, it is a family issue. Obviously, he is not in a right frame of mind…Mohbad is not a type of person that fights, he doesn’t fight…unless he is high…maybe he is mad already”. Then he added in Yoruba language: “…You know when somebody is mad and they are beating out the madness in him, he would calm down.” Mohbad had also petitioned the police. His June 27, 2023, petition was titled: “Petition of threat to life, malicious damage of properties valued (at) the sum of five-million-naira, assault occasioning harm, oppression and conduct likely to cause breach of peace”. But after his controversial death, the police has been unable to tell the public if it investigated this petition and the stage of such investigation. But if it did not, why it ignored the cries of a youth who feared his life was about to be snuffed out. This led to feelings that had the police acted or granted him protection, he might still have been alive today, writing songs and entertaining his fans. As the protests spread, the police instituted a 19-person investigation team, and in collaboration with the State Security Services, is investigating the circumstances of his death. This has led to the exhumation of his corpse for forensic examination. The speed with which he was buried within 24 hours in a coffin so small that his neck had to be bent, and in an unmarked grave, also inflamed passions. But these could have been the actions of a family too shocked to think straight. Lessons the ‘Justice For Mohbad’ teach us include the fact that Nigerians can rise for the underdog without identifying with his region or religion. Nigerian youths can rally against the state like the EndSARS case or

The agenda must show in clear and concrete terms how to address the issues facing nation. “It must respond to critical national issues like growing the economy, job creation, tackling insecurity, anti-corruption and show synergy between the legislative agenda and the executive programmes . “You must honestly debate government policies to ascertain the merits and demerits without party sentiments saying that standing committees must be properly equipped in its composition to vigorously oversight Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).” Mark opined that committee systems and caucuses are essential mechanisms for balancing diversity and promoting effective representation in legislative houses . NAFDAC warns against use of products with steroids, others

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against use of four products found to contain potent medicinal ingredients, steroids and other banned substances. The warning is contained in a public alert signed by the Director-General of the agency, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, in Abuja on Sunday. Adeyeye said that the agency was notified of the product in a statement by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) of Singapore. She said that the implicated potent medicinal ingredients are not allowed in the affected products and may cause severe side effects on consumers. According to her, the HSA confirmed that four consumers experienced adverse effects after taking three of the products. The NAFDAC boss said that laboratory analysis conducted by HSA on the products revealed that they contain potent medicinal ingredients, including steroids. She said that the products also contain sibutramine (a banned weight loss medicine) and tadalafil (an erectile dysfunction medicine). Accory to her, further details of the products as provided by HSA are as follows; Potent medicinal ingredients She disclosed the source of the products as: ‘ENRU PLUS+’Sibutramine (banned substance), Local e-commerce and social media platforms ‘HKT HERBA KURUS TRADISI’ According to her, possible adverse effects of potent ingredients found in the products are: Dexamethasone and Prednisolone. She also described Diclofenac in the products as a potent painkiller that may potentially cause serious gastric bleeding, as well as cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and stroke when used for a prolonged period. According to her, Diclofenac should be used under close medical supervision, especially in consumers with underlying heart conditions. The D-G said that Sibutramine is a medicine prescribed for weight loss, and has been banned in Singapore since 2010 because of an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. ICYMI: I am ready to lay down my life for Ndigbo – Iwuanyanwu

President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has sued for peace, describing the level of insecurity and unimaginable extra-judicial killings in Igbo land as horrendous. Insisting that this has to stop, Iwuanyanwu, vowed that if it will take his life to restore peace in the southeast he was ready to do so. Ohanaeze President General, spoke on Saturday night while addressing journalists on the 2023 Igbo Day celebration coming up on September 28 and 29 with the church service held on Sunday at the Cathedral Church of Good Shepherd. The octogenarian who spoke on various efforts and strategies his leadership has decided to take to restore peace, however, explained that each time he hears that one person is killed in Igboland, it diminishes his person. He said that as father of all Igbos, he would use his exalted position as the President General to pursue peace at all costs, adding that he would go as far as Finland and other parts of the world to discuss with Biafran agitators. “I’ll take a kinetic approach that will require the cooperation of everybody. I’ll talk peace. I am ready to lay down my life to see that there is peace in Igboland. “I’ll go to Finland and everywhere to see that there is peace in Igboland. I’ll go and cry to them. I pray to God that I achieve success. He said: “I have decided that as a father, I am tired of the death of my children. Ndigbo have given me the responsibility of leading them at this time. Each time I hear anybody killed I feel very sad. feel very sad too because those of them who are joining whatever it is are doing it because some of them are hungry. Some of them are unemployed. I am not saying that hunger and unemployment should make somebody become a criminal but not everyone has the capacity to endure hardship or hunger. “We have been using a kinetic approach, I think I’m going to advise, I am going to discuss as part of the Igbo day celebration, I’m likely to announce a non-kinetic approach. I will as a father now call everybody. It is my duty to call everybody for peace. On the 29th of this month during my address, I will initiate a non-kinetic approach. “I will appeal to our people because we have these programmes we have started so that when people leave school here they will have opportunities. So this non-kinetic approach will require everybody’s support. It will require the support of the state governors and the federal government. “It is good for the federal government to have peace in the South East. It won’t pay them to have bloodshed. Because you see, bloodshed doesn’t pay anybody. So whatever sacrifices they make to bring the non-kinetic approach which saves killings and bloodshed will be useful and that is what I want to do. “I am going to reach all these people by any means and I will talk for peace. I will beg them. I will even give them my life. If they want to take my life I am ready to surrender. I will set up a committee. I will send people abroad. They have mentioned some names of people abroad who feel are doing this. I am going to set up a committee. “I don’t want to kill any of my children. All these people, the gunmen are my children. We are going there to beg them and to appeal to them. Tell them please, tell us what you want us to do and we are doing it already. I am sure that even those who are hungry will find something for them to do to keep them happy. But the shedding of blood should stop.” Iwuanyanwu said that he has resolved to transform Ndigbo to create employment opportunities, saying however that could be achieved with the cooperation of the South East Governors. He said that Ndigbo were not out for war but opportunities to better their lots and sued the Federal Government to see that International Airports in Igboland work as well as the rail transport so that Ndigbo as business entrepreneurs would carry on their enterprise unhindered.

Fulani Leader Killed In Plateau

A 70-year-old Fulani leader of Panyam District in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Adamu Idris Gabdo, has been killed by yet-to-be-identified criminals. The state chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Nuru Abdullahi, who confirmed the killing said the incident happened Saturday evening when the deceased was returning from a visit to the district head of Panyam. The MACBAN chairman accused Mwaghavul youths in the area of the killing, but the spokesperson for Mwaghavul Development Association, Mr. Lawrence Kyarshik, denied the allegation. Kyarshik said, “I have not heard this until now and I believe our people won’t go to this level of attacking and killing the Ardo (Fulani leader). The allegation is baseless. Meanwhile, the Transition Implementation Committee Chairman of Mangu LGA, Hon Markus Artu, has condemned the killing. The council chairman in a statement made available to newsmen in Jos on Sunday, described the killing as barbaric and an act of criminality by enemies of Plateau who were against the peace enjoyed in the state. Hon. Artu while condemning the act assured the people of Mangu that the security operatives were on the trail of the perpetrators of the evil act and would soon be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law. He said, “The entire Mangu Council authority has distanced itself from the incident. The people of Mangu have since resolved to live in peace with each other, irrespective of tribe or religion and would not allow anyone to come between them. “The incident was a deliberate act by hoodlums who are bent on throwing the council area into another round of chaos at a time when relative peace has been achieved and the people are returning to their ancestral homes due to many efforts made by the state government under the leadership of state Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang,” the council chairman added. While urging the Fulani herders to remain calm, the MACBAN chairman called on the security agencies to ensure the recovery of Ardo’s corpse. Daily Trust reports that more than 300 people have been killed in various villages of Mangu LGA in recent times.
