Outrage As Zimbabwe President Appoints Son, Nephew As Ministers

President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe has appointed his son, David Kudakwashe Mnangagwa, as the deputy finance minister in a new cabinet following his re-election. The appointment which happened on Monday, however, has been greeted with backlash criticism on Monday, as this raised concerns about nepotism within the government. While the 34-year-old David Mnangagwa will serve as the deputy to Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube, his cousin and the president’s nephew, Tongai Mafidhi Mnangagwa, was also named deputy minister of tourism and hospitality. This decision is part of the newly constituted cabinet consisting of 26 ministries, local media reported. A lawmaker from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Fadzayi Mahere, criticized President Mnangagwa’s cabinet, describing it as “indefensible.” She raised concerns about legitimacy, corruption, violence, nepotism, incompetence, and ethical issues within the government. According to Africa News, Mnangagwa appointed a husband and wife team, Christopher and Monica Mutsvangwa, as ministers. He gave Christopher the power to lead the new Ministry of Veterans of Liberation, while Monica Mutsvangwa is the new minister of Women’s Affairs and SMEs. This is coming as African leaders have been considered most power-hungry and long-serving and have made the continent experience rising coups in the Sahel recently.

Over 25% Of Tested Men In Nigeria Aren’t Biological Fathers – DNA Report

Smart DNA, a leading DNA testing center based in Lagos, Nigeria, has released a comprehensive data analysis of all relationship DNA tests conducted at its facility between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that DNA is Deoxyribonucleic acid; it is the material that carries genetic information for the development and functioning of an organism. A DNA test (genetic testing) is a medical test that can identify mutations in one’s genes, chromosomes or proteins. These tests provide information about an individual’s ancestral roots. A DNA relationship test is the use of genetic profiles to determine whether an individual is the biological parent of another individual. The Smart DNA report, based on thousands of users, provides an unprecedented insight into the DNA testing trends across Nigeria. Released on Tuesday, it showed startling findings about the reasons people seek testing, the demographics of those tested, and the outcomes of the tests. Nevertheless, it showed positive results which indicated that the men who came out positive as the biological fathers of the children who they queried their paternity, accounted for 73.88 per cent of tests. Negative results were 26.12 per cent of those who were tested. On geographical spread, the report showed that Lagos accounted for the highest percentage of tests, with 82.89 per cent of the total. This is followed by Oyo (3.29 per cent), Ogun (3.07 per cent) and FCT (2.63 per cent and Rivers (2.41 per cent). “This heavy concentration in Lagos, particularly the Mainland (68.14 percent) compared to the Island (31.86 per cent), is likely due to the location of Smart DNA’s office in Lagos. “Also likely due to the purchasing power of the state’s residents, and the high population density of the state,’’ it said. The report showed that the majority of tests (89.10 per cent) were conducted for ‘Peace of Mind’, followed by ‘Immigration’ (8.97 per cent), and ‘Legal’ (0.64 per cent). “This suggests that individuals primarily seek DNA testing to confirm biological relationships for personal reasons rather than legal or immigration purposes.’’ It showed that men were the predominant initiators of contact, making up 86.44 per cent of the first contacts, compared to 13.56 per cent made by women. This indicates that men are more likely to have doubts about paternity or other relationships and take the initiative to seek testing,’’ it said. “Positive results indicating that the man tested is the biological father of the child, accounted for 73.88 per cent of tests, while negative results made up 26.12 per cent. “This suggests that in the majority of cases, the men seeking testing are indeed the biological fathers, but in more than 1 in 4 cases, the tested father is not the biological father of the child’’. On Ethnic Group, the Yoruba ethnic group had the highest percentage of tests (61.23 per cent), followed by Igbo (19.07 per cent). “Others (12.08 per cent), and Edo (6.78 per cent). This may be reflective of the ethnic distribution in Lagos and the surrounding areas’’. On the sex of the child, more tests were conducted on male children (56.62 per cent) compared to female children (43.38 per cent). It said that this may suggest a cultural preference for confirming paternity of male offspring, although further research would be needed to confirm this hypothesis. Analysing the age range of those tested, it said that most tests were conducted on children aged 0-5 years (58.02 per cent), followed by the 6-12 age group (25.95 per cent). “This indicates that paternity tests are mostly done on children when they are younger rather than when they get older’. The Smart DNA findings said that the men who opted for these DNA tests were mostly between the ages of 31-40 years (40 per cent) and 41-50 years (23 per cent). “ This age group is likely to have young children and may be in a financial position to afford the testing’’. Officials of Smart DNA said the centre is committed to providing fully accredited DNA testing services to clients in accordance with the highest international standards. According to them, the report aims to shed light on the current trends in relationship DNA testing in Nigeria, contributing to a better understanding of this important aspect of our society. (NAN)

Last week, Brent reached $89 a barrel for the first time in 10 months, an increase reportedly driven by cuts from Saudi Arabia and Russia – Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) leaders. The increased price of the commodity is said to be bolstered by a tighter supply outlook. On Tuesday, OPEC said global oil demand would rise by 2.25 million bpd in 2024, compared with growth of 2.44 million bpd in 2023. “The ongoing global economic growth is forecast to drive oil demand, especially given the recovery in tourism, air travel and steady driving mobility,” OPEC said in its monthly report. “Pre-COVID-19 levels of total global oil demand will be surpassed in 2023.” Nigeria, a key member of OPEC and allies, known as OPEC+, has experienced a steady increase in crude oil output levels. PEPT: PDP BoT member hails verdict

A member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, representing the South-South geopolitical zone, Charles Idahosa, on Tuesday hailed the verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal which affirmed the election of President Bola Tinubu, describing it as perfect. Idahosa, who was a former Commissioner for Information in Edo State, made the statement in Benin City on Tuesday while interacting with journalists in an event to mark his 70th birthday. He said those insisting that a presidential candidate must win Abuja to be able to win the presidential election should note that people in Abuja are not more Nigerians than people in other states, adding that the last general election was a victim of the social media which turned out unverifiable news. “The PEPT judgement is perfect. The election was a victim of the social media. A lot of things happen on social media that you cannot verify. How can somebody tell me that if you don’t win Abuja, you will not win the presidency? “Are people from Abuja different from other Nigerians? I don’t understand why people view the PEPT judgement with sentiments. Some said there is a watermark on the verdict paper… I have read the judgement and it is very clear, not ambiguous. I believe that President Tinubu will make Nigeria great again. On the 2024 Edo State governorship election, Idahosa, who recently received a national honour, Officer of the Federal Republic, said the Edo elections would be free and fair, as the introduction of BVAS has made it impossible for elections to be rigged. He said, “The Edo 2024 governorship election will be free and fair because the introduction of BVAS has made it difficult for elections to be rigged in Nigeria. The last general election was a free and fair election where sitting governors could not make it to the Senate. The then President, Muhammadu Buhari, lost in Kastina; President Tinubu lost Lagos, and Governor Samuel Ortom lost his senatorial bid (in Benue). In Enugu, the former state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, was unable to win his Senate seat too, that is 1/3 of the state. I even lost my ward. “So, the Edo 2024 governorship election will be free and fair. Some people say because Tinubu is the President, the APC will win. It will not be easy. “The next governor of Edo State must be a homeboy and not an imported financial magician. This time around, nobody will sell a candidate to us. He must be one of us, who is conversant with the state. Reacting to calls that the next governor should come from Edo Central, Idahosa urged the people of the zone to synergise and lobby the major political parties to select candidates from the zone for them to produce the next governor of the state, adding that there has never been a time, where political contest in the state was restricted to a given senatorial zone.
